Football Sunday in America! - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

Apologies for not posting a thread for the game at Wembley. When London has their own team, they'll make it into regular rotation.

Today's schedule can be found here.

Now for the real reason you come here:

Your early game....

And the late afternoon game...

Choices, choices....

Oh! And for the Moronettes...

Enjoy the games, folks.

ALSO: While not football related, it is sports related.

Johnny Strange, 23 years old, died today while on a wingsuit adventure in the Swiss Alps.

We look at these adventurers as being nuts, but this kid lived one helluva life, short as it may have been: Scaled the Seven Summits by age 17, flew with the birds, reached both the North and the South Poles...

It's easy to shake our heads at the recklessness of it, but oh-my-God at the things these kids have experienced that the rest of us never will.

RIP, Johnny.

Posted by: Garrett at October 04, 2015 01:57 PM (Fgv6H)

I think we should go to a system where each team brings three referees, and the NaFoLe provides a single ref to settle ties. Every play should have at least 5 penalties which will be ajudicated through a lengthy and higly corrupt voting process. At the end of the game (if ever) the people in the stands vote to have one participant (of the refs, umps, coaches, players, and announcers) savagely torn by an enraged hippo at the 50 yard line. At Lions home games, the hippo will be played by Michael Moore.

Again, if you want to go out and risk your life for pleasure, go ahead. People will mourn you when you are gone. They will also struggle trying to find meaning.

Baseball great Roberto Clemente died in 1972, flying a relief mission to Nicaragua (he was NOT Nicaraguan, btw) after an earthquake. Last year, promising rookie Oscar Taveras died days after his team, the Cardinals were eliminated in the NLCS. His car slid off a road. He had been drinking. Heavily, it has been said.

Both deaths are tragedies. Both families suffered. For the last forty or so years though, Clemente's memory has been celebrated, and his name is synonymous with ballplayers who use their fame and fortune to help others.

Taveras is a life's lesson learned the hard way.

One might rationalize any behavior that way. Many of the 'dullest' of lives have made great contributions to society.

An adrenaline rush is just that, short lived, and non-recallable. Yes, later you can say, I did such and such. There are bragging rights, but they don't really mean much.

I have consciously tried to register specific significant moments, hoping to recall those moments later, but it doesn't work. All I can say is, "Yes, I was there", and that's about it.

In my experience, comforting a frightened child, or holding the hand of a sick friend is more meaningful than a thousand views from the peak of K2.

Just my take on things.

All it means is that we all have different numbers to plug into our calculation of the risk:benefit ratio for any given action.

Yep. I kayaked class 5 rivers while I had infant children. But I had life insurance. I tried hanggliding off Lookout Mountain when they were teenagers. I always try to manage risk, but not entirely avoid it.

I roadraced in AMA CCS, and WERA for some years. Great fun. BUT, I also watched the ambulances roll, for guys that were better riders than myself. Sometimes, it wasn't their fault, but rather, some other guy's fault. I t doesn't matter.

Finally, my insurance carrier informed me that 'No more coverage for engagement in motorsports'. That was the trigger for reconsidering the whole thing.

Fun is fun, but a rational, mature adult does not expose themselves needlessly to potentially fatal engagements "for fun".

I took whitewater kayaking off my list for the same reason. Attending a friend's funeral has a way of refocusing priorities.

On a related note, whenever I read about some douchy leftwing journalist (but I repeat myself) getting assaulted or offed in the Middle East, it is very hard for me to feel any sympathy.

I think we need to take a hard line against terrorists who do that, for the sake of Americans who are, say, contractors or whatever, that we are responsible for. But as to journalists, I'm at the point where I feel like, "you think these people are innocent, noble savages with legitimate grievances, and you try to lie and brainwash us into believing that. All whitewater is risky, even class3 stuff, but there is a difference between risk of injury vs risk of death. I avoided places where if you miss the correct line, you die, no ifs and or buts.

The wealthy people in this case were experienced climbers, just not up to the level that they could do Everest without assistance.

IIRC, the problems arise when you've got a paid client who wants to get up there and that overrules a more level-headed decision about turning around because of weather, requiring extra oxygen used to physically assist said client up to the summit, etc.

This was part of Jon Krakauer's story in "Into Thin Air". Basically, a sherpa pretty much hauled her ass up to the peak of Everest. Yeah, she really "summitted" Everest. The Sherpa's make a decent living assisting the climbing teams, but he was obviously not doing what he was hired to do. There were a lot of problems on that climb, which resulted in several people dying.
I'm not a big fan of Krakauer, but the book pointed out a lot of problems with the whole idea of Everest expeditions. It is still much more dangerous than people realize. At high altitude, you need oxygen, become dehydrated, incur breathing problems, etc. Technically, a lot of pro-climbers pooh-pooh climbing Everest, but everything they do is terribly hard at 29,000 feet, and the time and fatigue it takes to get to the peak from the Base Camp.

The comment like some of the things Yogi Berra use to say sort of makes sense...The only reason the sport is more dangerous for the experts is because of their need/desire to take more chances.
