Milo: If You Want to Stop Mass Shooting, Try Treating Boys Better

Provocative piece with some truth in it, but I think it's mostly off the mark. I'll explain why after a quote (but I suggest reading the whole thing).

I might be a raging homo, but I still innately understand the male need to conquer, crush and win. Men need to express that dark, powerful part of themselves, or it can abruptly overflow. If it is suppressed, derided and ridiculed, it can show up without warning and with horrible consequences.

That’s why I'm so distressed that heterosexual men are being told, constantly, by the media and even in schools, that what they are is bad. This, I submit, is at least in part what’s driving the recent spate of shootings.

The media trash-talks everything men love: guns, booze, boisterousness, drugs, sex and video games. Economic pressures are relentlessly stripping away male spaces like the traditional pub, where blokes can drink and bond. Social pressures are opening up male-only golf and social clubs to women, destroying what made them precious and essential.

...

Masculinity isn't fragile, as a spiteful, sociopathic feminist Twitter hashtag recently claimed. But -- and here’s where some man-hating feminists almost get it right-- it is powerful, and exciting, and it does have a flip-side if not properly respected. At its best, male competitiveness is the driving force behind most of society's progress. We would be nowhere without the patriarchy, from the internet and space travel to the road under your feet and the roof on your house. The same thing that drives mass shooters inspires courage, too.

It is certainly true that masculinity, and the urge to "crush and conquer" Milo mentions, is a driving force in civilization, for good for ill. If this force is not channelled into useful ends, you get ISIS -- blood, rape, war and fire.

When it's well-channelled, you get guys like Sean Spencer and Chuck Yaegher.

But here's the part where I think Milo goes wrong: Almost all men have this desire to "crush and conquer." It's deep-seeded in men. But the problem is, and the problem has always been, there are some men who are ineffectual -- losers, in the vernacular; Failed Men, men who have failed to really satisfy their sense of what a man is -- and thus are always frustrated in their primeval urges to "crush and conquer."

And radical feminism doesn't really have anything at all to do with that. Someone who wishes to be the ultimate winner, but is more like a sad loser, is going to have some very tender psychological wounds due to that fact.

And there's always this sort of Failed Man in every society. Japan has a lot of Failed Men. In Japan, there has been a response to realizing one was a Failed Man: Suicide.

In America, these Failed Men still long for suicide, but they wish to be famous, and they're lonely for company in their way to the grave.

I agree with a lot of what Milo says about the dysfunctions society creates when it insists that male traits not be directed into useful channels (such as competitiveness or honorable violence, like in the armed forces or the simulation of physical combat, sport). It causes a lot of problems.

In fact, I'd say it's the cause of common criminality among the subgroups likely to join gangs: This is their idea of being a "warrior," and society isn't offering them better alternatives into which they can work out their warrior impulses.

But these mass shootings aren't about that. They're about men who usually understand the "warrior" spirit all too well; however, understanding it is not the same as being any good at it, or being any good at anything at all, which is the problem.

These killers are full of the desire to crush and conquer, but, being losers, headcases, and diagnosable near-morons, have no chance of crushing or conquering anything.

The most they can do is shoot a bunch of unarmed people by ambush. That's really the most they can do. They sure the f*** aren't going to be building any houses or bridges. They don't have the mental equipment for that.

This particular Failed Man tried to fulfill his fantasy of being a man by joining the Army.

Surprise: He was discharged before he finished basic training. Because he was hopeless, and possibly just because he was crazy.

That really doesn't have much to do with "feminization." In fact, in this particular lunatic killer's case, we might actually have wished that the progressives' project to turn men into women would have worked a little better.

I don't know what to do about the Failed Men of society. They're always a problem, whether they're petty criminals (usually of the crueler type) or wife-beaters, child-abandoners, or even child molesters.

They always will be a problem.

7 Okay, I think Milo is right in what he's saying, but that's kind of unrelated to the mass shooting thing, where I think ace is more right then Milo.

I also think the media has some culpability in how they cover these stories, and I also suspect there's probably some kind of biological thing going on here with SSRI inhibitors and other drugs that effect brain chemistry, but I don't know that for sure.

It takes a special kind of soulless fuck to do something like that.

I mean, i get the link between no dad in the house and being a petty criminal.

I don't think there is a link to something like this. Mass shootings are straight pyscho pathic behavior.

15 Constantly repeating the jackasses' name and putting up his pictures may not help. I mean, if the only name we used for spree killers was "loser," and we didn't make such a fuss about all their details and pictures in the MFM... I don't want to "memory hole" things, I don't want people deleting accounts...

And obviously some profile and psych information is useful. I mean, *this* loser had "spree killer" in neon lights suspended over him and people did nothing.

But there's his picture - he's famous. And like he idolized the lame-ass news studio killer, someone else will idolize him.

You can't really prevent someone from finding the info, so maybe it wouldn't make that much difference. I am sick of seeing his dumb-ass smug loser face (yeah, I can turn it off).

27 Ace, he may be more right than you're giving credit for in that the feminization of our culture, particularly education, has exponentially increased the pool of failed men. Used to be one in 50 or something men could not find fulfillment in a job/career/family. Now it is as bad as one in 3. If the same portion of failed men lash out at society violently, the much larger pool will by itself generate many more shootings.

31 Where Milo might be right is that the Failed Men of the past didn't think they could succeed in becoming famous by shooting a bunch of unarmed people by ambush, because there was a sense that many of those people would not be unarmed, and would also have the sense of manhood to fight back. In other words, their victims would neither be helpless nor ineffective. They would have the tools and the sense to end the ambush before it becomes news.

The Failed Men need to reach the definition of a mass shooting: they have to kill four people before they themselves are killed. Any less than that, and it's just local news. *Especially* if the reason it wasn't a mass shooting is because a hero with a firearm stopped it from becoming a mass shooting.

So yes, the Failed Men would still beat their wives and live on the margins until someone else on the margins killed them, or until they misjudged who else was on the margins, but they would not try to become famous by killing lots of people all at once because that would no longer be a means of becoming famous.

When I was in high school, our history teacher compared a Canadian mass murder to what would happen in America, because they had lined up to be killed. That wouldn't happen in America, because we would not line up to be killed.

35 Men mature and learn to socialize (with each other and the rest of humanity in general) in a different way than women do.
Not better, not worse; different.

As the matriarchy continues to try to feminize society (like women commentators for tradition men's sports, like American Football), and big corporations dig this for advertising reasons, individual men with unlearned socialization skills become more stressed.

Like GamecockJerry said above, boys raised by single moms. A lot of bad social pathology juju right there. (Barack Obama??)

Then there is just sociopathic crazy. (Barack Obama??)

I have two sons, and though they are alike, they are also different. I can see one of them might have problems because he sometimes has problems with authority and conformity (and he might also be somewhat bi-polar, because that actually runs in my wife's family- they're all nuts).

Posted by: Bossy Conservative....lost in America at October 02, 2015 03:31 PM (RFeQD)

36 I agree. Look at this list of recent mass killers:
Dylan Storm Roof, Adam Lanza, Andrew Engeldinger, James Holmes, Jared Lee Loughner, Robert Hawkins, Seung-hui Cho. They weren't killers because they were feminized men. They were killers because they were damaged men. Letting them play more sports or join the military wouldn't have helped them. They would have failed. It is there failure as men that led them to killing.

Posted by: Country Singer at October 02, 2015 03:31 PM (nL0sw)

39 I will say one thing Milo has right - pop culture is sickeningly misandrist. It's one of the reasons I don't have cable or a TV, and yet when I do get corralled into seeing something at someone else's, it's usually scattered with or drenched in messages about how dumb men are, or how useless or ugly, or violent or just how inferior they are.

Most people are exposed every day and don't even notice. AND it's not new, it's been that way for many years.

I don't think that makes any normal person do anything other than turn it off, or develop some mild neurosis. But borderline personalities? Particularly in that magic zone of adult onset schizophrenia, late teens to mid twenties?

Well, let's just say it probably doesn't help.

Also, there's the fact that it's just bigoted.

71 Modern Socialist (Public) Education tends to focus upon getting kids to ignore their individual development in favor of learning to be a polite member of the collective (society).

Lost in this feel good socialist indoctrination process are various moral and self reliant skill developments at the individual level -- especially when it comes to males, but it's not exclusive.

Most healthy well adjusted kids find a work around in sports, social media or other avenues.

However, there are exceptions who appear to dig themselves into a hole full of dark forces that eventually compact down to an explosion. These problems have been around forever, however, it's likely that the current educational system tends to exacerbate these problems via some sort of alienation problem.

80 I might also mention that for a long time people learned that they weren't capable of becoming anything they wanted and so the vast majority adapted to life as one of the average people who went to work, got married, had a family, etc. (Reminds me of an "Unhappily Ever After" episode in which the younger son learns he has an average IQ and then learns that being average makes him part of the world's largest team.)
And now, imagine spending all those years in school where everyone wins and no one loses, where you could do math however you wanted so long as you were interested in math, etc, and then you finally get into the real world and reality slams you in the head. God only knows I would have cracked up if I wasn't so superior.

87 Feminism has something to do with it. Okay not
directly but a lot of the anger comes from failure with women and some
of that can be because of feminism. At least in America.

Posted by: Max Rockatansky

I will say one more thing that will probably anger some people, but I have found it to be pragmatically true.
There can be a lot more workplace stress when there are too many women working in the same place; factory, office, whatever.

If the fraction of women in a workplace is over 25-30%, workplace stress goes up quite a bit. I once worked at a company where about 50-60% of the workers were women, and sometimes it was just hellish at work. Most of the women were actually very nice and likeable, but there is always a fraction that liked to stir up the shit.
The other end, if almost all the workplace is women (> 90%), then the stress among women goes down, but a man has to really conform to the women's ideas of "behavior" to fit in and survive.

What this has to do with a mass shooter, is probably totally off topic. But who know where this thing is going today?

I think this guy was just a sociopathic asshole, and the symptoms should not be confused with causation.
Single mom? check; but that may be another symptom
General Discharge from the Army (basic): another symptom that he had serious behavioral problems.

Indeed, he was a loser male, who had no idea how to fit into society, and at the end, validated his identity with murder. Suicide by murder. That's how these things almost always end.

89 Nature gave men a desire to have sex constantly, which involved conquering and subduing. Since Nature couldn't make men selective in the sense of confining their impulses, it had to make do with hoping that this nature would be more constructive than destructive.
There had to be constant sex because of the scarcity of human beings.
Now men have the leisure to be selective, but their natures are still wild and unrestrained. This explains most of what happens on this earth when humans are in contact with other humans. It explains homosexuality, brutality towards women and other men. Science and nature are wild and without bounds.

It's countering the prevalent Lefty narratives.
While I agree it doesn't apply in this particular case, there has been a huge cultural shift of hostility toward traditional, normal male behavior.

94 Yeah sure, but failed men used to have an ideal to try to live up to. There was an *Honer* to being a man. In Japan, that may have meant suicide, but all over there was n honer and a set of principals and if someone failed at building the bridge, they still could be "a man."

Feminism has denigrated that honer. Now the alternative to building the bridge is to be a "modern man" and keep your vagina fresh smelling like that nyt article states.

So without an ethos or moral code, the loner shithead despises the other, the ones that he thinks have things figured out, ie, belief in religion, Christ, and so he/she grows not only to ashew that, but to resent it and to mock it. Then ultimately the insane take it to the next level when they act out. Notice, these fucktards don't go murdering Muslims... no.. it's Christians they're mad at, (if a religious motive exists ).

It's the otherness doctrine and the left has especially used this is media and shows and campaigns... not respect for fellow citizen or human, but tribalism and derision.. It's too easy to blame single Moms' because a lot of us grew up that way. Most young men are fine. It's the signals that are always seen and dismissed.... and the way our pop-culture has devolved to a base level that I think enables the insane or weak minded to lash out.

The problem really is theinability to involuntarily commit people anymore. We literally have lunatics running around on the streets, able to purchase firearms. Go back though each and every one of these guys and you find 1) serious mental illness 2) drug abuse.
There are several studies that show crime rates, especially murder rates, are directly proportional to the number of mental hospitals a nation has.
Deinstitutionalization startedin the1960s, moving psychiatric patients from hospital settings to less restricting settings in the community. This has directly leadto massive numbers of people injails and prisons or becoming homeless.

Celebrity culture, narcissism, moral relativism and you getmorelosers than we used to have. You always had losers before, and they did horrible things, but it wasn't as bad as it is now. Today's losers are celebrated as "ultra losers" by the mediawhich is kind of a sick win for a loser. That attracts other losers.
Also, Milo probably has a point that society has created more male losers now than in the past because the weird and shifting standards of male behavior that are antithetical to male biology/self respect. So the pool of losers is bigger today, I suspect.
Andlosers see this type ofbehavior as a victory in a sense as they are competing to see who is the "ultra loser". Also, chicks dig mass murders but you have to survive your crime spree. The Colorado theatre shooter guy gets letter from women now, which is attention he didn't get before he shot anyone. There are some sick women out there.

We should look at the UK which is coincidentally where this shitbird was from.

The UK seems to have large number of these layabouts on the dole, and they have had them for a long time

To which I might say, how's that working for them?

I would say not so much.

When I was stationed in Europe in the early 90s one of the big differences I noticed between us and them was that they married later and they y lived at home longer.

This is happening here now.

Part of hte problem is student debt - 2 recent college grads could be several hundred thousand dollars in debt right from the start. It is hard to pull off.

Being out on your own generates a lot of commerce and productivity. If you have payments to mke you really can't spend all day playing Xbox.

You don't need your own TV or couch if you are using Mom and Dad's. You don't need a car. And if you are gettig married larer you are starting on families later, which will mean you have less.

You can get away with that for a while. But eventually you have to bring more vital and fecund people to take up the slack.

See Germany.

198 Another big factor is that many people have become disconnected from society. People used to need family, neighbours, etc. to survive. You used to have to have a job, and fear losing it. Lived with your family and siblings, and were part of something that you did not want to embarrass even if you did hate the world enough to go postal.
Now families are smaller with fewer children, and fewer mulitgenerational living situations. Jobs are disposable and no one starves because they become disconnected from society like in the past.

In the past, the ones that wanted to live as hermits moved into the wilderness where they had no one to shoot up but raccoons. Now they move into an apartment, spend their days on the internet, and wallow in their failure looking for something to shoot up. like travis bickle

It is a discharge for administrative reasons, not for conduct or whatever.

Back in the day, for example, women could get an administrative discharge for being pregnant. You might get put out for being overweight - that is administrative. Gay used to be an administrative discharge. Failing PT tests. Or failure to perform.

209 See, ace, here's the thing: I think Milo's right, AND I think you're right. Milo is right about the sidelining of boys and the feminization of modern society; it leads to a lot of lonely, confused young men who have the potential to explode in dangerous and deadly ways.

But you're right, too, in that there are some people - male or female - who are simply incapable of making it in the world. They're too feeble minded or weak willed or slovenly, and in their worst incarnations they use violence to make themselves feel like equals to their (genuine) betters. That may well be the case with Bald Scrotum here (I refuse to use the murder's name).

But what you're both missing is the intersection of the two, which I think is exemplified by the veteran, Chris Mintz, who charged Bald Scrotum and took seven bullets in his attempt to stop the lunatic from killing anyone else. Mintz exemplified with that act the very best of what masculinity can achieve: heroism, bravery, selflessness, strength, audacity, confidence. He is the man that Milo wants today's lost generation of boys and men to become. And if boys and men WERE appreciated more, as Milo recommends, maybe there wouldn't have been just one Chris Mintz in that classroom. Maybe there would have been a dozen. Maybe there would have been enough to swarm Bald Scrotum before he could kill anyone. Maybe Bald Scrotum would have been so cowed by the knowledge that there were brave men (and women, b/c confidence breeds confidence) who would take him down and send him to prison in ignominy that he wouldn't have even hatched the plan in the first place.

Yes, there will always be losers and violent scum in society. But what we're doing in America today is providing an avenue to that underclass for young men who might otherwise have become leaders or their wingmen.

Good men, good women, good PEOPLE are the surest way to diminish the tarnish left on society by the weak and the greedy like Balding Scrotum. And to have a society of good people, you have to start by respecting what makes people unique and allowing them to embrace their strengths. That means embracing the positive aspects of masculinity (and femininity), not mislabeling them as "toxic."

As to being a male in this society, it's harder than it's ever been. It's also easy to see why ISIS has such an easy time recruiting young males. They suddenly get to be a hero, get to do religious sanctioned violence, maybe get to rape some hostage woman. We've made it so easy, too easy.

212 They think they can meddle with basic human instincts and there will be no downside. It's not enough to feminize men. We have to deny that gender differences even exist. And we tell women that there is a problem with them, if they primarily want children, because what they should really want is a job. We tell women that there is no downside to divorce. We say that one person with kids can support themselves, although it's certainly not true in this economy. And society holds up gay men as something to be emulated.

Add to that the willful destruction of all the things that "glue" societies together, like church,, family, traditions, and it will unravel.

They think they can meddle with basic human instincts and there will be no downside.

Say, that almost seems like it was the plan all along . . .

Don't allow them to be boys. Don't allow them to express themselves naturally so they can be shaped and directed. Suppress their nature and force them into PC boxes. Meanwhile, don't let them compete, fail, face adversity, be wrong, stumble, or have any difficulties.

And you think boys will grow up healthy and sane in this? Remember the story of those college kids who went to the counselor because they saw a mouse??? This is not a sane generation being brought up. Small wonder we're seeing them crack.

Absolutely; its both ways. Men and women both have abandoned all traditional, past roles and concepts of gender and are cast adrift without comprehension of masculinity or femininity. Men don't know how to man. Women don't know how to woman. And we're all paying the price.

The left successfully tore down a thousand years of learned wisdom and tradition along with some flaws and sins... and gave us nothing to replace it with. Our culture has no skeleton. Its just a pile of quivering goo.

Completely agree!!

While they're demonizing boys for being boys, they're "empowering" girls with feminist nonsense about having everything you want (perfect job, perfect husband, kids at any age) and no consequences for your decisions.

You can no longer voice any type of common sense advice such as "don't get fall-down drunk in public, surrounded by strangers" or "fertility changes as you age, so you might not want to wait to achieve all career goals before settling down and starting a family (if that's what you want)."

The problems here cannot be solved by making a particular tool go away. Maybe it could be diminished, but the evidence I've seen is far from conclusive.

The solution is a new culture, and will take generations.

297 We are failing the next generation of Men.

Mainly because us Men no longer have the institutions that enable us to be good examples for young Men.

Boy Scouts? Wimp scouts... no boxing clubs.. there are sports in school but if you are not a Jock, you are not welcome...

So if you do not have a Father who is a good Manly role model... you learn how to behave from TV... which is leftist, and Gay.

I grew up with a Manly Father... and REAL Boy Scouts... and watching John Wayne...

Todays generation mostly are in broken homes, raised by Mom, with NO
outdoor activities, and watching Queer Eye or a Homosexual Sherlock
Holmes...

And then folks wonder why they are screwed up.

At the same time, I think we should not get so dismayed by all the bad we see...because we miss so much of the good. The good often goes unreported. The evil that men do lives after them, the good is interred with their bones. Etc.

341 This Milo character is a quarter right but three quarters off. Sure, the media are a bunch of fruits who push their fruity ways on us. And the feminists are a bunch of rotten fruit pushing their smelly rancid way on us. And the left, in general, are a bunch of America-hating fruits who can never forgive Dad for their own damaged and weak personalities that have disembodied , illusory guilt constantly filling their tiny minds ...

But these people are not the real problem. They always existed. They've always been around. But, back when we had the few people of integrity and courage who were needed, these America-hating, fruity retards weren't given the time of day. Nothing they said was taken seriously, because they aren't serious people. Men just brushed them aside and ignored them, as is the only good way to treat these fools.

But, nowadays, we have no more of those few good men who are willing to stand up for the obvious truth, who are willing to say that an 84 IQ America-hating Precedent is rending the Constitution and needs to be impeached (and then criminally prosecuted). No of those few good men who are willing to block the America-hating Indonesian's plans in Congress. Those few good men have disappeared, so the fruits are left to run wild and do as much damage as they always dreamed of doing.

That said, none of this has anything to do with the evil shooter in Oregon. There is no connection.

342 Ace sez something very deep:

"They (violent loser men) always will be a problem."

This, actually, is the crucial nexus of the difference between a leftist and a non-leftist:

A non-leftist like Ace (correctly) realizes that human beings are flawed and unequal, and that whatever the setting or social configuration, some men will be comparably "losers," and that furthermore men are inherently competitive and have a capacity for violence, so that ALWAYS, always always always, there will be problems in society and frustrated bad men who "act out" either individually (like a loner criminal) or in groups/gangs (like followers of necrotic ideologies). All we can do is do our best to minimize and cope with the damage when it erupts.

A leftist, however, is defined by the (false) belief that mankind is "perfectable" and that with enough training and brainwashing and indoctrination and social conditioning we can tame the savage beast in the heart of man and thereby create a nonviolent utopia.

And so, to achieve this goal, the leftist attempts to seize with every means available the levers of control to FORCE everyone onto their road toward utopia.

What they don't realize is that they, the leftists themselves, in the attempt to force everyone into utopia, are "acting out" violently and being competitive.

Their own action self-disprove their theories.

Whoever was speaking just kept droning on and on. By the end of the ceremony there were more guys laying on the field then standing up.

"Our culture doesn't respect good men". You can't find one on TV on the Disney channel even. They areall hapless idiots who can't do anything right.
The women on tv are all wildly inappropriate selfish, shallow harridans, so completely neurotic they should be in treatment, not character's on a kid's show.
Family life in general is depicted as mean, an empty contest of wills, duplicity and pointless drama.

379 He left out the part that most of these 'boys' were raised by single mom's.

Its ideal to have both parents, but I think the primary problem is what is being done to raise kids, not how many of what sort of parent. Having two parents who raise their kid to be a special snowflake whose gender is indeterminate and must never have their tender self esteem triggered while being taught all about transgendered lesbian elves is going to turn out a horrible mess much worse than one parent who works hard to instill absolute objective morality, truth, and virtue.

I work at a large public institute of higher learning, and I've seen ball park 4 or 5 chickies with such short shorts on that I could clearly see their butt cheeks.

Yeah, the ball is rolling to normalize these monsters. There's almost no evil of the past that isn't being made not just legal and allowed, but preferred and protected. Its not enough to stop persecuting homosexuals with the law, we have to be happy about it and cheer.

If the percentage is different, what are the contributing factors to *that*?

Well, there are A LOT of black men in prison.

There are more women in college than men.

There are A LOT of men who have left the work force (to the point that they don't even register on unemployed stats).

Just a few indicators that more men are failing than in decades past.

Story time: I needed some special screws to assemble a job I was making. I turned the shop upside down for about 30 minutes looking for some. I finally gave up and went to ax him if he knew where any were. He said, "How many do you need?" I replied "Six."

544 The correct strategy: never show a picture of the killer, never mention his name, play up the heroism of the people who stopped him. Let's pass a law requiring all the news media to refer to mass-murderers only as "some loser": "Some loser just shot a bunch of people."

Pop quiz: When they tried doing exactly that yesterday, what did we do here at the HQ?

Myself included. I'm willing to call myself out on that.

545 This guy and the Sandy Hook shooter seem to have similar backgrounds: 20-something mentally/emotionally/developmentally challenged young men from broken homes who lived with and were enabled by their co-dependent mothers. I think both these guys needed serious help and their mothers were both unable to help them yet unwilling to get them the help they needed if that help might require pursuing institutionalization of some kind.

546 I'd say single motherhood is the biggest problem. Young men need positive male role models. It doesn't matter if you're dumb or short or ugly or physically weak. Each of these young men had some kind of talent which they could have developed and used to satisfy the competitive masculine trait.

Without a mature male voice to teach the values necessary to develop that talent (patience, perseverance, adaptation) you get young men lost in the electronic swamp and drug use. Listless, hateful, resentful and violent, like Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) of Tombstone. Radical feminism further demeans your existence until you reach the point where living itself is just a meaningless, painful chore. Then one day you break.

There are many positive things a mother can do. Focusing male development is not one of them.

547 It's Chuck YEAGER. WW II fighter ace and test pilot, and first man to fly supersonic (and live to tell about it).

At the risk of someone already having covered this, I have to jump in here. SOMETHING is going on here, and no, I don't think it's SSRIs or anything like that. I'm older than most of you, and one thing I can tell you is that back in the day, this sort of thing just DID NOT HAPPEN. Not like this. Yeah, there was that guy (name escapes me now) who shot up the UT Austin campus back in the '60s, but he had a malignant brain tumor making things more interesting for him. A nontrivial difference. Insane, sociopaths, something not the norm.

And the thing is, guns (yeah, I'm looking at you, Obama, you commie cocksucker) were every bit as ubiquitous back then as they are today, if not more so. Hell, I got my first rifle at the age of 13, and so did most of my peers. But there were NO school shootings like what we see nowadays. None of this walking up and hosing a bunch of unarmed people just to make a name for themselves, or whatever the fuck their motivation supposedly was.

As I said, SOMETHING, in the past 40-50 years has changed. I suspect part of it is indeed the absence of fathers in the home. Children, male and female, DO need a father's influence in the home. And yes, I mean a POSITIVE influence, as well as a mother's.

But I also suspect, and yes I admit I have no hard evidence, other than the "coincidence" of this, that abortion has played a role in this. Think about it. The last few generations of kids has grown up realizing that life is, after all, not that precious anymore. Their mothers could have just as easily, if not more so, had them roto-rootered out of their wombs as have them. Indeed, how many of them would have had brothers or sisters that were instead aborted because they were "inconvenient".

And yes, there is the whole "e-vil white male culture", the very same culture that, oh by the way, built Western Civilization and gave us all these things like roads, medicines, airplanes, spaceships, freedom, et cetera, that the media and education is hellbent on denigrating, along with anyone who displays such traits. The irony here is that it was solely us e-vil white males, warts and all, that built it, not the Blacks, Asians (of whatever flavor), Hispanics or whatever "preferred" PoC/ethnic group you care to name, in this country. And no, that is not racism, that is reality. History. Deal with it.

Anyway, whatever that SOMETHING is that has changed, is why crap like this keeps happening, and why this nation is going down the goddam tubes...

548 Story time: I needed some special screws to assemble a job I was making. I turned the shop upside down for about 30 minutes looking for some. I finally gave up and went to ax him if he knew where any were. He said, "How many do you need?" I replied "Six."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out six of them. He literally had NASA in his pocket.

Good times.

553 Bingo Ace! But you failed to tie in another one of your favorite subjects that explains this a little more -- that is, the way kids have been raised as "special snowflakes," that they are stars ("Baby, you're a firework! Right Katy Perry.).

When it turns out that they are not stars, this is the reaction that you get from some -- to go out in a blaze of "glory." They'll show everyone -- they really are are "star." Katy was right! It's completely explainable that this is their reaction.

I also believe that many of these losers are also influenced by violent video games as mental training grounds for unstable minds -- but I'm sure that opinion will be rather unpopular here.

556 There has been no statisticallysignificant uptick in gun violence or mass shootings on either the long term (multi-generational) or short term (multi-decade) in the US. Quite the opposite, as violence of all sorts has cratered dramatically since the founding of the Republic. It's a pretty scrote-free form of victim culture to blame a category of crime that women never commit on women. Isn't this the kind of willful misdirection we don't take from Ta Nehisi Coates ?
Ace has the pathology exactly right: these are self-made losers.

Milo's writing is box-ticking clapper humor for the universe where John Stewart wears a goatee.

557 He was a nut. His momma is a nut. Daddy wasn't around. Probably left when he figured out momma was nutty.

You wanna stop this sort of stuff? Don't allow nuts to own guns. Period. Full stop. And don't allow anyone who LIVES with the nuts to own guns. No guns for nuts. Simple.

558 493 Chuck Yeager once ate scrambled eggs in the chair right to the back of mine at the Williamsburg Inn. I didn't turn around and therefore kept my eyesight.

I always try to approach vets and tell them thank you, with a handshake, if I can. And their wives, if present, because they served, too by waiting at home and fighting in the home front.
Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 02, 2015 04:57 PM (39g3+)

I sat behind him and his 20something girlfriend at an air show. His wife was still alive, but she'd had cancer for a long time. As far as I heard he took good care of her as long as she lived, but this little thing in her cutoffs and high heels was just a sight.

One gal in our group took on the mission of talking to her and finding out if she was his girlfriend or granddaughter. She said Chuck liked to see her in her bikini.

He's a great hero, though, and there's no denying that.

Yes, true, but now it's harder to have people committed. We might need to revisit that. As a taxpayer, I'm more than willing to help pay for institutions to care for severely challenged people whose families can't.

560 Huh... you said all the things I usually say...

Criminality, gangs, that sort of thing is because young men in various communities aren't given other options for being warriors.

Mass killings like this are flamboyant suicides meant to show the world that they are powerful and deadly men.

As for failing basic... my understanding is that if you fail for physical issues you get a "medical" which was not what was reported here. If you're just out of shape they "recycle" you until you get in shape. So if you get sent home it's because you had a mental break down or threatened to kill yourself.

And I think that Milo is right that men need men places to do men sorts of things with other men. When they don't get that they write articles about 27 ways to be a modern man and everyone makes fun of them.

Posted by: Synova at October 03, 2015 12:48 AM (Ek0Xs)

561 I don't think giving proper context to the warrior impulse is the only aspect of manhood that is being neglected by society. For example, in non-Marxist Jewish life, the Bar Mitzvah initiates young men, at 13, into a group of men with community responsibilities. Not all of these are warrior-type responsibilities, but they are still male responsibilities. The older men help orient the teens toward service, giving some balance to the self-preoccupation typical at that age. When the only male-oriented organizations are criminal gangs, I think society loses something.

Dennis Prager said years ago that one of the main purposes of civil society is to civilize young men. He urged older adults to befriend lonely young men when possible. I don't think this always works, especially when there are mental issues. For example, an association with some young men with bipolar disorder can be problematic. But in other cases, it could make a difference.

I have seen some marginal young men develop a sense of purpose through associations with churches, boy scouts or clubs. But institutions like this cannot always counteract the moral relativism that often leads to "men without chests" today. Social media seems particularly ill-suited for developing "men with chests".

Ace keeps misspelling Yeager. I'm surprised Chuck, who's 92 now, hassn't stopped by to issue a Chuck Norris-style corrective.
