Rep. Jason Chaffetz Running for Speaker of the House

He has to be better than McCarthy, because everyone, including the homeless feller giving blow-jays under the bridge for a quarter, is better than McCarthy.

Much better, actually. The hobo'll blow you for two bits.

Chaffetz is seizing on McCarthy's Benghazi gaffe:

Chaffetz, chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, strongly criticized House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for connecting the Benghazi Committee investigation to Hillary Clinton’s low polling numbers, which critics argued proves political motivation behind the probe.

"I'm very supportive of Kevin McCarthy, but those statements are just absolutely inappropriate, they should be withdrawn, Mr. McCarthy should apologize. I just, I think it was absolutely wrong,' Chaffetz told MSNBC on Thursday.

I think the liberal shrieking over those comments is, of course, completely contrived, but McCarthy also said a dumb thing. The whole point of RINOs, I thought, was that they were supposedly smarter and more sober than the Crazies and Wacko-Birds of the Tea Party.

Now if that's not true (and by the way: of course that's not true), then why would I want a RINO who's every bit as likely to say something grossly impolitic as a real conservative, while also delivering us liberal policy victory after liberal policy victory?

And considering he's had over 3 years to get his thoughts in order on it - pretty damning of his abilities altogether.

He should be primaried for making that statement as the presumed Speaker of the House alone.

This is just silly. Sorry, but the speaker has tons of power in the house to set schedules, rules, etc.

The reason you have to use those screwy, mercury-filled CFLs is because the bill to allow incandescents was voted on without going through committee - so even though it had majority support in the house, the measure failed because it required 2/3 to pass instead of the normal 1/2.

Well, Congressman McCarthy is majority leader, isnt he? It is customary that the majority leader follows the Speaker, should the latter retire, resign etc. Mr. Chaffetz could have accepted that and tried to get himself elected to a lower leadership position (like Mr. McCarthy did a few years back), but instead he chose to break party unity for a very slim chance of career advancement.

202 Well, Congressman McCarthy is majority leader, isnt he? It is customary that the majority leader follows the Speaker, should the latter retire, resign etc. Mr. Chaffetz could have accepted that and tried to get himself elected to a lower leadership position (like Mr. McCarthy did a few years back), but instead he chose to break party unity for a very slim chance of career advancement.

209 I remember Chaffetz stalking other Republican candidates on Romney's behalf during the primaries for the 2012 election. I forget what candidates were involved but there were photos of Chaffetz standing in the back of other candidates' events, grinning like a hyena. This was a supposed intimidation technique - Romney's campaign used several of these juvenile, nasty stunts to disrupt other candidates' events. Ever since then, I've thought Chaffetz was an establishment POS.

Honestly, I probably would laugh at anyone they put up for Speaker. That's how disillusioned I am with the whole process. There was a time that I thought my representative would be Speaker of the House one day. Heck, there was a time when I thought my representative would be the next Vice President of the United States. Oh wait, that was just 3 years ago, wasn't it?

381 Chaffetz proved he was a RINO several months ago, but darn it, I can't remember what he did now... too much news every day to remember everything. But, there was something that annoyed me and turned me off. Maybe it was during the '14 midterms and he endorsed a RINO encumbant? Something.

Anyway. I wish Gohmert would be Speaker. That guy is rock solid.

390 Gowdy's a dope. Used to love him but he just spins his wheels while looking like he's doing something. Any arrests about Benghazi? No. He's like Issa. All show, no results. The only thing good that came out of Benghazi was Hillary's emails, but, yes, it's impolitic to talk about that since we didn't investigate Benghazi to hurt Hillary -- that was just a happy bonus -- we investigated because JUSTICE needed to be served for the dead and wounded.

395 I agree that McCarthy really stuck his foot in his mouth on this. At the time, liberals accused us of investigating Benghazi simply to hurt Hillary and we were "playing politics/exploiting a tragedy". So, McCarthy plays right into their accusations like an idiot. As I said above, Benghazi needed investigating because the dead deserved justice. Hurting Hillary was a by-product.

403 I think Chaffetz is a good choice for Speaker. He's never (as far as I can recall) insulted the Tea Party and right-wing, but he's trusted by the Establishment. I think if he were Speaker he would actually start getting some conservative bills passed and sent to the Senate.

Posted by: I R A Darth Aggie at October 02, 2015 08:56 PM (VvOZ5)

408 I am sort of more for Chaffetz because of the the secret service attempt at a hatchet job (SS, FBI... one of them). Then again, in these days of trickery, and due to the timing, either they knew he was going to run and meant to trip him up OR... he did it for the perception, hoping that would propel his nomination in a world against the system(s) and in it for the underdog. Still, I think he would be alright. Much better than Mc-whatever. What is it with the Mc-whatevers? Mc-soandwhositz, McCain, McConnel, etc. Nasty group of people oddly. Or not?

Posted by: Doom at October 03, 2015 01:51 AM (7RdIv)

409 The RINO's will win. Again. Don't be surprised - or disappointed. We just don't have the numbers yet.

Here's why: Conservatives are still a minority of the majority. There's 70-80 Conservatives in the House, tops. That means they are outnumbered by at least 2:1 by the Chamber of Commerce financed RINO's.

Plus, ALL of the remaining leadership are Boehner cronies and they've got the organization in place, plus the favors to call in from all of their Committee appointments over the years.

Don't whine about it when we lose this time. Just turn out for Primary elections and keep voting for Conservatives until we have a majority of the majority and can elect the leadership we want. Like the Democrats did when the Communist wing of their Party finally outnumbered the Blue Dogs.

Remember the Blue Dogs? Under Clinton, there were over 100 of them in the House. The kind of guys that would actually vote for something beneficial to America (like, for instance, NAFTA). Prior to the last election, there were only 12 of them. Now, about 5. They completely collapsed after the Communists won a majority of their Party's seats.

The RINO's will collapse in similar fashion once Conservatives win a majority of the R conference. They have no principles, and their base consists of the big money donors that comprise the Chamber of Commerce - money that will dry up once it fails to result in control over the contents of legislation.

410 Is this the place?

I'm looking for the website where the host practically every day administers the breach of life to Putin's flaccid dingle. They tell me it's got a really crass name that stands for killed negros and that to get around being pinned to the wall on that every 11 seconds, the host is named "Ace", a word in slang meaning kill.

After reading this post and all the comments, yeah, pretty sure this is place.

411 McCarthy did damage. Real damage.

And NBC took the opportunity to sell Hillary all week end.

This is becoming the 47% innocent remark of this election year!

There has got to be a way to stop the media/Democrat cabal that gets legs on meaningless, throw away lines.

It doesn't matter what is true as long as the media is on their side.

And no McCarthy isn't the best choice.

But it can, and does happen to everyone. The left decides to make something happen and they do it.

I wish Hillary would get indicted. That would shut them up.

That is so confusing!!! I did not know there were Democrats at BYU! Another surprise.

I hope he wins. The people of Whoville will rejoice! Everyone likes to cheer the hometown boy.
