7 The mass murderer at the Oregon community college targeted Christians in his hate filled shooting spree. He claimed to be a "conservative Republican" according to newspaper accounts. One wonders if the newspapers would publish it is he claimed to be a devout muzzie. I do not believe a "conservative Republican" would go into a small college and shoot 9 people for shits and grins. It should be noted that this was a "gun free" campus which really protected students.

This new shooting is unnerving.

Asking who was Christian, just after the Pope's visit.

It was a school that trained Law Enforcement and Nurses.

It was also the school where the Paris train hero, Alek Skarlatos, attended, although he was evidently off this semester shooting Dancing with the Stars (weird).

It seems so oddly connected... Christians, Cops, and a terrorist take-down hero.

31 Haile Selassie, if he was the leader of Syria -

"The very refinement of barbarism consisted in carrying ravage and terror into the most densely populated parts of the territory, the points farthest removed from the scene of hostilities. The object was to scatter fear and death over a great part of the Syrian territory. These fearful tactics succeeded. Men and animals succumbed. The deadly rain that fell from the aircraft made all those whom it touched fly shrieking with pain. All those who drank the poisoned water or ate the infected food also succumbed in dreadful suffering. In tens of thousands, the victims of the mustard gas fell. It is in order to denounce to the civilized world the tortures inflicted upon the Syrian people that I resolved to come to New York City. None other than myself and my brave companions in arms could bring the United Nations the undeniable proof. The appeals of my delegates addressed to the United Nations had remained without any answer; my delegates had not been witnesses. That is why I decided to come myself to bear witness against the crime perpetrated against my people and give the world a warning of the doom that awaits it, if it should bow before the accomplished fact."

Of course in reality it was Italy and the League of Nations did nothing to back up all the brave words it spouted.

There was an article yesterday reporting that for every 10,000 "refugees" that the U.S. takes in, taxpayers spend something like $1.6 billion on providing them with welfare, housing, etc.

So if you consider the hundreds of thousands of ME refugees Obama has already invited in every year since he's been in office, and combine those with the 100,000+ more that he plans to take in next year, we're talking serious amounts of money. And the country is already $19 trillion in debt, with hundreds of trillions more in unfunded liabilities like Social Security.

So why do we keep pretending that we can afford this?

We have massive debt, tens of millions of Americans who can't find jobs, record numbers of people already on various types of government welfare, and yet we keep bringing in more lifelong foreign welfare recipients. It's f*cking insane.

That was back when the Navy named warships after heroes.

Now in the Obama era, the Navy names ships (can't call them warships) after the likes of Gabby Giffords, and Cesar Chavez (who was in the Navy and was vocal for the rest of his life about how much he hated it).

And as noted above, the deadliest mass murder at a school in the U.S. happened in 1927 as a result of dynamite bombs, not guns.

I used to work on matters related to prison inmates, and you would be surprised at how ingenious people can be at making deadly weapons out of ordinary materials. For example, a tube sock and a couple of bars of soap make a wicked swinging club. Unless we lock everybody up in a rubber room with no clothes, there is never going to be a way to make the world safe from violence. People can, and will, make weapons out of anything. And violent, unbalanced people can, and will, harm as many people as they can when they get the impulse and the opportunity.

From the third sentence of that article:

"To win his first congressional race, Richard Nixon disingenuously linked

would earn Nixon the nickname 'Tricky Dick.'"

Disingenuously linked? What Nixon did was to commit what was for the Democratic left the unpardonable sin (pun intended) of describing to the public the actual Congressional voting record of Helen Gahagan Douglas. Simple as that. She damned herself, yet Nixon gets the blame.

When someone produces a journalistic howler of that magnitude right out of the gate, it's a good indication that the rest of the article is garbage.

The NRA is probably the most effective, but you're right...don't rely on one organization.

Look for state-level organizations as well...they are the real grassroots. In Virginia, the Virginia Citizen's Defense League is simply fantastic and keeps pressure on the state legislature when gun control starts rearing its ugly head every year. The VCDL is more effective at this level than the NRA, in fact.

So certainly, support the national organizations as much as you can, but don't forget that most of the gun control garbage is enacted at the local level that the national orgs aren't well equipped to fight. Supporting state level organizations as well helps immensely.

232 "142,000 jobs in September. Unemployment rate stays the same at 5.1%. Unexpectedly."

In the early Obama years, I sat down and crunched the numbers and concluded that it was necessary to be generating an absolute floor-function minimum of 250K jobs per month _merely to keep pace_ with the growth in the working-age population.

That's not to get unemployment down. That's just to hold it static.

Obamanomics was consistently failing to even make the 250K mark. Hence the labor force participation rate collapse.

Note that since Obama (and the congressional GOP) have since firewalled the throttle on immigration, the growth rate of the working-age population is even higher now than when Obama first came to power. But we're still not even close to hitting what used to be the standstill jobs target.

Hey, everybody, I have a plan! Let's import even more people to compete for the steadily shrinking pool of jobs! The Chamber of Commerce and the Club for Growth are fully on board!

A government's first duty is to protect the rights and interests of its citizens. A government that elevates foreign nationals and international businesses above its own citizens has become antithetical to its purpose and must be reformed or abolished.

248 In the early Obama years, I sat down and crunched the numbers and concluded that it was necessary to be generating an absolute floor-function minimum of 250K jobs per month _merely to keep pace_ with the growth in the working-age population.

Posted by: Lady in Black.....sigh at October 02, 2015 08:27 AM (pVkEV)

Schulz was, at the very least, chronically depressed, which in my opinion, is part of what makes early Peanuts such a fascinating strip. But from what I've read, he always seems to have had a chip on his shoulder, recalling how nobody at school liked him (even though surviving classmates said Schulz simply kept to himself and seemed content enough) and carrying around a boatload of self-hatred (which I can absolutely identify with).

He was a mentor to a number of younger cartoonists, but he always operated on the level of, "I'm the master, you're the student." Lynn Johnston (of the strip For Better Or For Worse) captured what I think is the essential Schulz: she was doing a sequence where the family dog died while trying to save one of the Patterson children and asked Schulz for advice. Schulz, who loved the dog (I think his name was Farley) didn't like the idea, but when Johnston said she was going to go ahead and do it anyway, he snapped, "If you kill Farley, then I'm going to kill Snoopy, and nobody will give a damn about your stupid dog!"

Getting people to voluntarily commit themselves is not the same as involuntary commitment.

How many non mass murderers are involuntarily commuted longer than three days?
Posted by: Lea at October 02, 2015 08:10 AM (vmMMi)

Oh, stop. The PET teams knows what they are doing. Once they are alerted they can issue a 3 day invol hold. At that time they can apply for a longer hold if required under the law or talk the person into committing themselves. They are very good at this. They can then be medicated and hooked up with social services/mental health.

I have a fantasy setting in my head that I'm trying to get nailed down and written so I don't forget it before I can get to actually writing a story in it.

The main question is how big of a mirror and lens would you need - and how clear would the mirror need to be - to do real damage in a combat situation with one? Yes, all Archimedes Mirror-like, but I'm thinking smaller scale than that (reportedly) was.

In my head, the "magic" of the big empire isn't magic at all, but way advanced knowledge of chemistry (napalm and other nasties) and physics (laser mirrors and such). It's fantasy, so I *can* hand-wave and say "it's magic," but I'd rather at least be pretty close.

Sure, but... Chicago.

Not a place which is a watchword for well run public facilities.

I will continue to maintain that it is possible to involuntarily commit the severely and obviously mentally ill. And to treat them in a humane, professional, careful way once they have been thus committed.

The unfortunate part is that the typical spree killer is functional enough to be able to avoid the involuntary commitment process. A system with aggressive enough commitment protocols to put the majority of spree killers in the nut hut early on would also end up institutionalizing a bunch of harmless eccentrics (and political dissenters).

No easy answers.

We will never see anything like them again, even though there is a need. Both governmental authority and "The Profession" blew their credibility; the institutions became the face of statism. The dementia side of an assisted living facility I used to do some work for -- which is pretty much what they would require -- had a yearly cost of over $60, 000 dollars. It requires cooks, maids, nurses, drug administration, janitors, housekeepers, business managers, supervisors, etc, etc, etc.

Well, I was thinking of actual physical damage - ships catching fire, same with siege engines, causing painful (if not debilitating) burns on the approaching army. That sort of thing.

Something like an up-sized version of a magnifying glass frying ants, but with a parabolic solar collector and then an additional focusing lens set at the focal point of the parabola.

I need something sophisticated enough that others couldn't just look at it and figure it out (though, obviously, once engineered, anything can be reverse engineered), and powerful enough that the various barbarian tribes and border nations would still view it as "magic" after a couple of centuries.

State being the operative word. My sister used to do volunteer work at the Fernald School in Waltham, MA back when we were in high school. Oldest state run institution of it's kind in the country with a history that would make Mengele proud.

A good many of the people were as you say inconvenient people and were just warehoused. But a not insignificant number were very disturbed and belonged in some sort of institution.

It all started in the 60's with the rise of "miracle" drugs to help the mentally ill along with the deplorable conditions found in many state run institutions. Like most government solutions, a sledgehammer solution was used when a scalpel was required and the result was a lot of dumping of patients who had no business on the streets. And that legacy continues today.

344 I do have a question for ya'll.

Now, I think the gun control debate is useless. People will order guns from Canada or manufacture them in their garage or whatever.

That said...I don't know about you all, but in my area, we have these Facebook Swap Sale groups where people post stuff for sale. I can't tell you how many times there have been firearms on that site. Now, I know ideally, the seller would check credentials and report the sale. And, I know ideally the buyer would be legit and register the gun. But... these are private citizens. And, my strong suspicion is it doesn't work like that.

I mean, as much as I feel gun control is a waste of time...there has to be a way to keep it from being as easy of buying a pack of gum, right?
