Quote of the Day I

Now we have reached the point where a Russian general can barge into a US military office in the Middle East and order us to stop flying our aircraft over Syria. Oh, we're still flying, for now - but you can bet that our flights are restricted and careful to the point of paralysis.

You bet President Obama's afraid of Putin. Physically, tangibly, change-the-diaper afraid.

And as I wrote in these pages on Monday, the odds are good that Putin will order the shootdown of a US drone or even a manned aircraft, anyway. Why? Because he can.

And he enjoys it.

But Putin sees a necessity in humiliating the United States. That's business. And yet, despite Putin's obviousness, the White House team and its acolytes publicly scratch their heads and other body parts, saying, "We're not certain what the Russians intend."

-- Ralph Peters

Quote of the Day II

Suppose you were a white person with a deep-seated dislike for black people, and you were intent on training your son to feel the same way. Suppose that, day after day, week after week, you instructed him to study the details of every instance of black-on-white crime. Say you advised your son to extrapolate from these incidents the notion that black people are generally dangerous, and that your zeal to present him with disturbing anecdotes along these lines never waned.

You would be wrong, in just about every possible way: statistically, sociologically, morally. You would be doing your son a gross and damaging disservice. For yourself you would invite, and earn, broad contempt. If your opinions became publicly known, you might well find yourself unwelcome in polite company and your job at risk. Indeed, the National Review contributor John Derbyshire was fired for expressing such sentiments in a blog post three years ago.

And yet for harboring roughly the same level of suspicion, fear, mistrust, distaste, and unease about whites as Derbyshire does about blacks, the essayist and blogger Ta-Nehisi Coates has found himself crowned America's leading civic thinker. "It is Coates to whom so many of us turn to affirm, challenge or, more often, to mold our views from the clay," wrote the Washington Post's Carlos Lozada, not inaccurately.

Coates's recent memoir, Between the World and Me, an instant No. 1 bestseller dubbed "immense" by Publishers Weekly and deemed "essential, like water or air," by A.O. Scott, will not only win every prize in sight, they'll have to invent some new prizes for it.

-- Kyle Smith in The Hard Untruths of Ta-Nehisi Coates

On Wednesday Ta-Nehisi Coates was awarded a 2015 MacArthur Foundation 'Genius Grant'.

Quote of the Day III

"And so what we are trying to do now is ensure that every formation in our Army has the appropriate combination of mobility, protection and lethality to overmatch the enemy," he said. "We don't want 14-hour firefights. We want four-second firefights."

..."We want to build into the squad the ability to create smoking boots on the other end of the engagement," he said. "In general, bullets that explode are better than bullets that don't explode."

-- Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster speaking at a Ft. Benning conference

How The Gleichschaltung Get Done

On the sidelines of a United Nations luncheon on Saturday, Merkel was caught on a hot mic pressing Zuckerberg about social media posts about the wave of Syrian refugees entering Germany, the publication reported.

The Facebook CEO was overheard responding that "we need to do some work" on curtailing anti-immigrant posts about the refugee crisis. "Are you working on this?" Merkel asked in English, to which Zuckerberg replied in the affirmative before the transmission was disrupted.

45 Seconds of Silence

"I know that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons remains the official policy of the international community. But no one should question Israel's determination to defend itself against those who seek our destruction. Seventy years after the murder of six million Jews, Iran's rulers promise to destroy my country. Murder my people. And the response from this body, the response from nearly every one of the governments represented here has been absolutely nothing! Utter silence! Deafening silence. [Here, Netanyahu stared out at the assembly in silence for nearly a minute.]"

But Allahpundit is probably right about what the UN General Assembly was really thinking.

I think this was meant to be reproachful in a sit-there-and-think-about-what-you've-done way. But this audience being what it is, most of them were thinking, "If Iran had gotten on with it already, we wouldn't need to sit here and listen to this Jew talk."

Mark Steyn Visits a Cemetary in Malmo

On the bench a yard away sat the only other persons in the cemetery - two Arab teens rocking their skateboards back and forth under their feet and eyeing me with a bored half-curiosity.

I asked if they knew where the graves of the Commonwealth airmen were. Which was a silly question on my part, because I doubt they had a clue what the "Commonwealth" was. But they were affable enough, and I explained the tombstones I was seeking looked like all the others, except, in addition to the Star of David, they'd have the badges of their services. And the lads rose, somewhat reluctantly, to assist me.

We soon found the graves, just behind the memorial to the camp victims: Henry George Popper, 19 years old, of the Royal Air Force, and SS Solomons, 32 years old, of the Royal Australian Air Force, both on a Lancaster bomber that was shot down over Sweden on August 30th 1944. They managed to bail out, but the plane exploded above them, and all the crew were found on the ground or suspended in parachutes from trees, dead from the force of the explosion. The inscriptions read:

Han stupade i strid for fosterlandet och friheten.

Which means: He died fighting for his homeland and for freedom.

What were two Jews doing in the skies over Europe in 1944? At that time, RAF and other allied bombers were being downed by German night-fighters guided by ground controllers at radar screens. So the Telecommunications Research Establishment at Malvern developed a method of jamming the enemy's equipment. The only drawback was that it required an eighth member of the air crew - the "Special Duty Operator" or SO - who could recognize not only, in the cacophony of the Continent, who was speaking German, but understood the lingo well enough to pick up on the enemy's quite sophisticated efforts at misdirection. There was no room for the SO in the heated forward section of the Lancaster bombers, so they sat in the back, dressed as best they could to weather temperatures that, at 20,000 feet over Germany, got down to minus 60 Fahrenheit.

Because of the language requirement, many of the SOs were Jews of German extraction, for whom being shot down and captured in the Third Reich meant not a PoW camp but certain torture and death. Yet they, like all the other SOs, cheerfully volunteered for the job. One such was 19-year old Henry George Popper, born Heinz George Popper.

He was a year or so older than the bigger Muslim lad in the cemetery, but he didn't get to loaf around with his skateboard all day. I bid the boys farewell, and, as I headed back to the gate, my eye fell on another headstone: Julius Popper, Esq (1892-1957) and Dr Eugenie Popper (1894-1974). They were the parents of Henry George Popper and they lived in Barking, Essex. Yet they too wound up in Malmo. Eugenie Popper's words on her husband's death hint at the depths of pain with which they lived after the war:

He came the long way to rest in a Jewish spot with our only child.

Henry George Popper is not a famous war hero - just a teenager doing his duty to King and country. Today, all around the cemetery where he lies, thousands of men his age arrive every week in Malmo, supposedly "refugees" from today's war. But, unlike Popper and Solomons, they're not interested in fighting for their country, merely in scramming to the welfare gravy trains of Northern Europe. And if they won't do anything for their own countries, why would Swedes expect them to do anything for theirs? A society that has nothing to die for has nothing to live for, and so Henryk Broder's last Europeans rush to embrace those who will supplant them.

Man Those Refugees Are a Surly Bunch

A 25-year-old Palestinian who stabbed a police officer at an asylum centre in Denmark this week is the same man who attacked a Swedish minister earlier in the year, Danish officials have said.

My suggestion: Put him on a train to Germany. They love refugees there.

Officer May I Suggest You Use Your Nightstick Colorful Fabric Armbands and Badges...

The ensuing violence left six police and 11 refugees injured. Police this week, after viewing video footage of the altercation, arrested 15 suspects on charges including attempted manslaughter.

Germany's police union Tuesday called for refugees to be separated by religion -- especially between Christians and Muslims -- and by country of origin, to minimise the potential for conflict.

Yelp For People Is Coming

And likely it will be both horrible and useful at the same time.

You can already rate restaurants, hotels, movies, college classes, government agencies and bowel movements online.

So the most surprising thing about Peeple - basically Yelp, but for humans - may be the fact that no one has yet had the gall to launch something like it.

When the app does launch, probably in late November, you will be able to assign reviews and one- to five-star ratings to everyone you know: your exes, your co-workers, the old guy who lives next door. You can't opt out - once someone puts your name in the Peeple system, it's there unless you violate the site's terms of service. And you can't delete bad, inaccurate or biased reviews - that would defeat the whole purpose.

Imagine every interaction you've ever had suddenly open to the scrutiny of the Internet public.

Five Words: Same-Sex Common Law Marriage

Welcome to the state-sanctioned marriage party pal.

Yes, folks: there are people out there who suddenly got the ability last summer to retroactively sue a former partner for alimony.  And there's gonna be a lot of lawyers who will find it reliably profitable to figure out what the law is now. Because Anthony Kennedy couldn't be bothered to work out those details.

Shortcuts make for bad law, folks. Deal with it.  And, oh, yeah: some of you same-sex marriage advocates out there should probably look into divorce reform.  Trust me: you'll be happier if you do.

Sweasel: WTF?

It's a coin, issued by a real government. Or, at any rate, the government of New Zealand. It has Liz on the other side and everything. It's a proof coin, so it was only ever intended for collectors. But I have to ask myself.collectors of what?

I've been watching the quality of coin designs slide for years but - in all seriousness - there is no excuse for modeling this shitty ever to escape into the wild. Even for the notoriously unfussy collectors' market. Certainly not with the imprimatur of a real government mint.

Dude's face fails even the basic properties of bilateral symmetry common to all terrestrial mammals. I wouldn't accept this level of drawing from a middle school student, not without some pretty stern critique.

When Hewlett Met Packard

In a one-car garage behind 367 Addison Avenue in Palo Alto, California, on January 1, 1939, two friends flipped a coin. They had an invention --  an automatic foul-line indicator for bowling alleys -- $538 in their pockets, and a dream. William Hewlett won the toss and Hewlett-Packard was born.

Hewlett and David Packard had met while undergraduate students at Stanford. They both loved the outdoors and electrical engineering. Hewlett went on to MIT for his doctorate, while Packard went to work in research for General Electric in Schenectady, New York. But in 1938, they both returned to Stanford, where Professor Frederick Terman encouraged them to go into the electronic business, as a previous student, Vannevar Bush, had done in 1922 when he co-founded Raytheon. Bush did that in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Terman wanted to make the Palo Alto area a hub of the electronics industry.

...But besides the great products they built, the company they built, the employees they helped, and the charities they helped, Hewlett and Packard did one other thing. They listened. In the summer of 1967, Hewlett received a phone call at home from an inquisitive 12-year-old. Struck by the kid's gumption, Hewlett hired him.

Nine years later that kid started his own company in the garage of his parents on Crist Drive in Los Altos, California. That kid was Steve Robert Jobs and his company was Apple. It too was built to last, not just make money, clearly a case of Apple not falling far from the H-P.

another one of those sons Obama never had. Is there a racial as well as
religious motivation ?

Yeah, he lived with his mother in SoCal and moved to Oregon.

So, he could be an actual son of Obama, if Obama was into women. Or something.

And yes, this story will disappear more quickly than the Clinton's cat, Socks.

Well, it was Communist partisans that killed Mussolini and his mistress, and I think the real reason for their nastiness in the matter was not so much what Mussolini did, but that he did it under the banner of Fascism, and not under the banner of International Socialism, to which banner they considered him a traitor.

T-Mobile said on Thursday that around 15 million of its U.S. customers may have been exposed in a data breach at one of its vendors.

The hackers compromised encrypted data at Experian, which processes the telecom carriers credit applications, sometime between Sept. 1, 2013 and Sept. 16 of this year. The stolen data includes Social Security numbers and other ID numbers, such as drivers licenses or passport numbers.

On the upside, guess which company also protects data on the Federal Obamacare exchange.....

I should explain. The salient feature of the Battle of the Coral Sea was that it was the first naval engagement in history where the opposing fleets never saw each other.

That was because they both had aircraft carriers and fought at long range.

I don't know where it came from, but the imagery and media class all over the world have gotten it into their collective empty heads that any naval surface combatant of any sort must be a "battleship".

There are instances of journos referring to unarmored, barely weaponed, built to merchant marine standards LCSes as "battleships".

It would be fun to see the test results of an uncrewed LCS taking fire from merely the antiaircraft batteries of an Iowa-class battlewagon. My money is on immediate catastrophic fire, loss of steerage way, loss of watertight integrity, and sinking within ten minutes.

Sorry read it in full in '74 or '75 I think. Seemed possible but highly unlikely. Same year I read a piece by the son of the Air Force Col stationed in Saudi who was liason with the Pentagon. He lived there growing up and said that Americans had no idea what the Muslim world really thought of them. he predicted the United States would be attacked by Muslims by the turn of the century and be embroiled in a religious war. Guy just passed a few years ago. He was a fucking prophet. I still remember more of his non fiction warning than the "Camp".

Also, after Charleston, we were treated by the media to very detailed accounts of everything the killer had ever said or written.

After Roanoke, we knew within hours that the killer was a gay black man. A doubleheader on the protected-class category.

So after that, we learned nothing else about him. He sent various media outlets a 21-page single-spaced murder manifesto. Do we get to see that?

OH NO we do not. They're sitting on that as diligently as the L.A. Times sits on the tape of Obama at the Rashid Khalidi dinner.

From which you may infer that the contents of the Roanoke killer's rant would not be helpful in "shaping the narrative", the overriding concern of modern American journamalism.

And so we fired them and now have another company that comes once a week for half the price.

My mind still boggles over the original trash collection company.

212 Actually we don't even understand who we are. There was an interesting paper a while back, dubbing Americans WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic). Cute little acronym.

It's hard to summarize in a short piece here, but basically, there's all you need to know about American Exceptionalism. The authors found that a lot of sacred cows of the social sciences were in fact bullshit. They assumed that Americans' behavior on various psycho/socio tests and experiments were universal for all humans.

Not so. And it's very low level brain stuff, stuff you'd think was basically "firmware", including various optical illusions (stuff like two lines the same length, but one looks longer).

In short, the West is the tail of the distribution, and Americans are the tail of the tail. We are exceptional. Our way of thinking is something unique, something extraordinary. It's how we put a man on the Moon in 200 years, rather than still sitting around wallowing in our own filth.

Now, armed with this realization, you realize that trying to install a Western, American style "democratic society" in the Middle East is a fool's errand. They don't think like we do. In fact, their thinking is anathema to us.

By Derb's own words, he was NOT fired. He was never an employee of National Review. He wrote for them on a contract basis, they would pick up things that he wrote and pay by the piece.
They chose to terminate the contract to buy his columns, which is not the same as being fired.
They did the same thing with Mark Steyn, during his dust-ups with the Canadian government speech commission.

Because they are frankly a kind of a family of weasels. Bill Buckley must be spinning in his grave. That and his son Christopher voting for Obama in 2008 and making a big deal about it.

The night there was a shooting on son's campus, the phone rang next to me at 3:30 a.m. (because for some reason we're still on the university's Blast line). Husband slept straight through the call. And the one at 4:30 a.m., and the one at 6:30 a.m.

However this latest murderous nutcase's details finally shake out, to be prepared in case on of my idiot friends or family barfs up some stupidity about guns and mass shootings soon, I need to confirm some zingers to use on them.

* Tucson shooter, major pot smoker, son of big local Dem, mom is close to obnoxious Dem sheriff, whose department could be reasonably blamed for the nutcase getting access to guns, as they did nothing to prevent it despite signals and warnings

* Colorado movie shooter, major pot smoker, mental case well known to mental health authorities, incl. potential violent tendencies

* Roanoke TV shooter, racist, black, gay, Obama nut (this is pretty much certain)

* Crazy LA cop shooter, racist, black, Obama nut

I think the Newtown shooter was also a major pot smoker and of course was well known as a nutcase to mental health authorities AND his family.

Anyway, as I said, mental illness really is the only relevant factor here, but to torment the lib idiots, these additional facts would be handy - if they are in indeed facts.

He has no memory of it, and thinks we're exaggerating if he believes it all.

He was in the hospital one time with pneumonia (just getting started) and they gave him 10mg of Ambien. It reacted with the cocktail of other stuff he had and he went wild. It took 4 nurses to hold him down in the bed while they got an order for *haldol*. It took that to put him out.

And he had no memory of it whatsoever.

Percocet is a mixture of acetaminophen and oxycontin. It is a highly dangerous drug (because of the acetaminophen) and should be avoided. NEVER double-dose this drug because it is worthless, because acetaminophen is the #1 cause of acute liver failure in both the US and UK, and the gap between it doing something noticeable and requiring a liver transplant is the smallest of any common medication.

277 Hey everybody.

Years ago (about 2007) there was a blogger I very much enjoyed reading, who called himself "Lee." He worked in Beijing for Technicolor and was of a *very* libertarian bent; his blog was called "Right Thinking from the Left Coast" (he started writing it when he lived in SoCal) and, even though he was absolutely maddening about certain topics (he was very anti-religion, for example) he could also be really right about a lot of things.

Anyway, once he went to live in Beijing with a Technicolor promotion and BIG raise, and was away from the wife he had *just* wed most of the time, something in him changed and he turned into Mr. Rock 'n' Roll All Night And Party Ev-er-rey Day. He loved to brag about how he was basically a 16-year-old kid with a 40-year-old's income.

Anyway (and to finally get to the point), one night after a lot of heavy partying, he went to bed... and *never* got up. His blog went unupdated, another blog he had about his new Chinese life (called "Lee in China") went silent for a week, and people got concerned.

His family had to pick his body up in a horrible, and by their description, beyond-decrepit morgue located in ugly downtown Beijing, away from the newly-built hyperbusiness centers. The best the Chinese doctors could tell, he had taken *one* Ambien... had some drinks (which by itself was a bad idea)... and then, since apparently he was so drunk he forgot about the earlier dose, took *another* Ambien, then went to bed.

So Lee basically put himself into an irreversible coma. Sad, sad, sad, and I had my disagreements with the guy, but I still miss him and his blog.

I read the Derbyshire column that was the center of the firestorm. Pretty unremarkable. He just wrote of warning his kids that certain black urban neighborhoods were not safe places to hang out, basically. Not PC, but scarcely raaaaaciss! either.

It was the timing, in the midst of another of our unending series of conversations on race, and the phrasing -- a direct inversion of "The Talk" blacks were supposed to be having. The term, "too cleaver by half" comes to mind.

Plus, NR was well into to its electric slide to the cultural left by that point and just looking to clear the decks of "not our kind".

What's "fishy" to me - and I'm not going truther or anything here, but I noticed - was that he wasn't IDed for 7 hours, and this his online footprint seems to be minimal. A 20-some year old activist with a minimal social media presence? Sure, I suppose it's possible, but...7 hours seems like a lot of time that may have been used to scrub a lot of links from the web.

314 Negative rates on bonds/bills (well sovereign debt varieties) is something that happens when there's a flight to safety. Buyers bid the price up so in scramble to get them that the yield calculation goes negative. You're paying Uncle (or the German or Swiss govt) to hold your money for you, rather than them paying you.

That's unusual and a sign of severe distress, but the banking system negative rates is when the banks charge you to hold your money, and a borrower actually has to pay back less than he borrowed.

You can see that would cause a flight to cash. But the idea is the lower bound of interest rates (zero) is an "obstacle" to our central planner economic wizards of smart. If their mathematical models call for negative interest rates, then by God, that's what they want to do.

It's the ultimate attempt at stimulating borrowing. Pay them to borrow (which means charging savers). They actually think this way.

In western Virginia, that manifesto would destroy the Democrats here.

As for the media, it would expose that Flannagan was hired because he was black. They kept making a big deal on how could he keep getting hired if he was such a bad employee. Anyone who has ever worked in radio or television will tell you that he was hired because he was black, period. The station probably had some EEOC complaint during their license renewal, and needed to hire more black on-air talent. It happens all the time.

Plus, the sheriff in Franklin County was elected about 4 years ago because his GOP predecessor didn't warn a neighboring jurisdiction about one of his deputies going after his ex-wife. The deputy shot her at a gas station, then was killed in a gun battle with a police officer in another jurisdiction. Guess who is up for re-election this November?

Just for empty fun (what else remains?) how hilarious would it be for you-know-who to come out with a characteristic (and in this case, spot-on) b-slap denunciation of the "president's" disgraceful and stupid behavior today WRT the shooting?

"We don't know anything, the WH doesn't know anything. Families are mourning their dead, camped out in ICU hoping their kids recover. And the president of all the people runs out there, grabs a bloody shirt and starts smearing it on some irrelevant thing, some crusade he's on to disarm law-abiding Americans? It's disgraceful, he owes the families an apology, he owes America an apology"

Like I said, just for fun. But imagine.

Meh. The original Alien was ridiculously stupid, to begin with. It was fun to watch, though. Very much a guilty pleasure. But, make no mistake about it, NOTHING about the plot made any sort of sense, whatsoever.

The Alien sequels were mind-numbingly asinine ... and Prometheus was the final, over-the-top laughably self-important cherry on the "sci-fi" pie of illogic and silliness that was the "Alien" story (if you can call an totally inconsistent collection of events mushed together to be a story). The only saving grace of Prometheus was the cool scene in the beginning where the guy dissolves, and it had a very pretty Charlize Theron acting as if she was all serious and stuff. But, other than that, it was as silly and ridiculous as "Up in Smoke", though not as cleverly funny.

If this is the Cascadia Rising that appears on his Facebook page, then it appears to be an environmentalist movement with links to Earth First!: http://tinyurl.com/oda3v7h

Yup, this group definitely is tied to Earth First! - same picture as appears as his avatar on Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/qayewbb

The CR also was tied in with Occupy protests, too: "The tricolor that waves in a multinational sports companys ad has also boldly risen at Occupy protests."

On the way to his business, he's weaving all over the road, barely makes it to his office, and passes out on his desk.

Told me later, he should have pulled over, called one of his employees to pick him up.

LOL. Now, you're just playing with me

But, to be serious, I have no problem with movies that don't make sense. Sometimes they can be ridiculous and, yet, the illogic doesn't catch up with people during the 2 hours watching it. That's fine. But the thing with Alien is that people started looking into it as some sort of serious plot long after they had watched it. At taht point someone has to stop them and explain that none of it makes any sense.

It's not just western Virginia, it's all the little small towns and rural counties too. The Dems are really good about getting their candidates elected to jobs like Sheriff of rural counties throughout the South. They all run as "old-timey" Democrats, but govern like DeBlasio. This is one of those mask being ripped off moments if that manifesto is leaked.

That manifesto being leaked could cost the Dems Virginia, Ohio, PA, MI, CO, and NV next year because some of those rural voters that vote Dem, may just decide that it is no longer in their interests.

Trek/Wars/Comic movies work with established universes.

I am missing the wonder of seeing new, radically different worlds.

387 The thing with the Nolan Bros. material is the high buy-in; you have to be willing to accept a steep suspension of disbelief from frame 1.

Memento: the main character isn't in a facility.
Batman: you are watching Batman
Inception: dream-rape
Interstellar: corn-pone per'fessor, hidden spaceship.

IF you are able to swallow those things, the movies generally work. IF not, well, I wish I had the money to refund your purchase.

But I don't. So don't ask.

I think Memento is one of the best movies of all time. The way it was filmed was the key to its greatness. It wasn't just that it was an interesting way to film a movie but that it gave the audience some sort of feeling of the mindset of the main character by piecing the story together backwards in steps. I loved it.

You are correct, though, there's the quetion that comes up very soon as to how the guy actually managed to stay out and live like that. All it would take is one mistake that distracted him for a few seconds and he would be totally lost. The thing with the polaroids was cute but certainly would not hold up over time. Even people with good memories would forget what the recent photograph was, etc.

I also liked Memento because I saw a documentary about a guy who had that disease. I was convinced that the writer and director must have seen the same documentary because there was a lot of it ... not copied or anything ... but very much I thought it must have been the origin of that story.

The subplot of Memento (the actual investigation and his story) was less interesting than the movie and the shooting method, which I considered to be the real "plot".

Anyway, Memento stands as one of my all-time favorite movies.

Well Ashley's far be it from me to make any political predictions any more, not since 2008. But them thar's a lot of very different states you listed, lots of wheels turning, complications, details and such (imagine voice of The Dude here).

This ridiculous and disastrous president lost 10 *million* votes in his second run, and still won easily. And he lost educated, over 30 (35?), married women, independents, and white voters by historic margins. And still won easily. And in the awful conditions of 2012, with a GOP candidate 10 times better than McCain (OK low bar, and don't want to get into either candidate here), fewer GOP votes.

I was stunned by the close election of 2004. But now the incomprehension, having been doubled by 2008/2012, is accompanied by resignation.

Almost certainly utterly academic (for the US, which sort of doesn't exist any more on the geopolitical gameboard), but these Russian activities in Syria will certainly be fun for updating our intel on their gear and operations. Much better coverage than any recent opportunities thanks to geography.

Surely the russkis have considered this and have some idea what they'll do, but if/when Israel does the needful on Iran, the Russian presence and co-ordination with IGRC/Hezbollah could become "interesting".

Israel's actual strikes on Iran will be 10% of the operation. The rest will be the war on Hezbollah and any IGRC of concern nearby. (minor policing up of stupidity in Gaza too, but Egypt can be expected to not be unhelpful and Hamas is dogs**t anyway) Tartus and the airbase are far from the areas involved, but still.

Both recently became available on blu-ray. I admit I'm intrigued.
Posted by: qdpsteve

"Silent Running" is an absolute classic of the sci-fi genre. In the top ten '70s sci-fi flicks at a minimum. It has a slow part in the middle, but a powerful ending.

"Capricorn One" is a ridiculous joke film, mostly notable for having OJ Simpson running and jumping over things to imitate the Hertz Rent-a-Car ads he was in at the time. An embarrassment, but enjoyable in a kitchy way.

431 Frankly, with the amount of time passed and secrecy on this one, unless you're an insider there's no way to trust what comes out tomorrow.

It can't help but look like they're rewriting events as they happen.

We're rapidly approaching the point where you'll find all these similar descriptions of an event online, then check old paper records and they all tell a different story.

People are already living that in their heads, of course.

Well, two kinds of possible fall-out from this sad tragedy re gun "control".

On the plus side, the idiots try one more time to make the water run uphill, maybe in some places where that can still get their jewels sliced off (NV, PA), so even more Dem losses to (mostly) useless GOP replacements. (think the scent of burnt flesh from the stove in CO is still too fresh for the Dems to try anything there)

On the negative side, places like CA may well descend into another paroxysm of unconstitutional, idiotic, completely irrelevant harrassment of gun owners (GOP doesn't really exist here and would probably join in if it did). Which the mostly farcical judicial system will take a decade or more to reverse, if they do.

Be patient with the long scenes where Bruce Dern goes crazy with boredom. Depicting boredom on film almost inevitably makes the audience bored.

Also be aware that it is, ultimately, a "deep green" propaganda film. But very well made and well acted, back before environmentalism imploded into a deranged cult. So your forgive its politics. Special effects are notable too - the transition between "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Star Wars."

I know, literally, hundreds of wiccans and other assorted pagans. The vast majority of them got involved in the scene specifically for the purpose of rebelling against the Christianity of their parents. Hating Christianity with burning intensity is the WHOLE PURPOSE of why they're in the pagan scene in the first place. There's no way they can dial it back a notch.

I think one of the underlying messages was that great irreversible evil may be done for trivial excusable slights. There was no reason for the arks to be destroyed except that they were embarrassing -- but once a dome was destroyed, it could never be re-created. We see that every day when thousands die in the Mid-East to try to cover-up that Obama is a socialist dipshit. These are real lives of real people who might be a great asset to society.....and nobody believes Obama is competent or has more than three fully-functional neurons [and those probably dedicated to bowel control]. And, yet, the actuality of the one is sacrificed -- over and over -- for the false and disbelieved illusion of the other.

I'd read reviews before, but yours far more effectively laid out the basics. Reminds me of Sayet's apple speech as far as efficiently dissecting ideas and their consequences.

Unfortunately, the consequence is the deliberate manufacture of a class of political advocates programmed to reject debate and argument and simply Push Until It Breaks. I knew they were doing it as a tactic, I hadn't seen their training manual yet.

I should have a copy of that, as infuriating as it sounds.

I already know so many people it is just impossible to converse with because they literally don't hear what you say, they hear their preconception of what you would say if you fit their stereotype.

I know someone who knows a couple who knows a couple who know Lakoff. (None of these people know my online identity or politics.) Anyway, I heard through this grapevine that Lakoff himself saw my review and was speechless with fury and spluttering rage-shame.

Even though I only heard this fourth-hand and didn't get to witness it personally, the very image of him reading the review with steam coming out of his ears is comforting to me.

I felt it was important to not just draw back the curtain, but to vivisect progressive ideology in full view of the world in real time, so that there is a permanent record of how they think.

Mom remarried and there's a stepsister.

Yeah, like that -- but it's the sort of message that needs to be shoved back into the faces of the SJW and the PC-policers and the "rape is saying 'nice tits'" folks. When you drum someone out of college and put them on a sexual predators' registry for life just because he was a lousy lay and didn't say "thank-you" enough, you are doing irreversible, serious, lifelong damage because you're a special snowflake.

When you're shoving the entire mideast into an inferno and causing thousands of deaths and huge displaced populations, not to mention causing the death of an employee, someone you were responsible for and had good relations with, just because you can't admit your knowledge of real, on-the-ground conflicts was limited to theoretical Marxist bullshit sessions that most people get beyond by the time they're Seniors.....you might just be a special snowflake.

I could see the consequences, the process just makes a lot more sense now.

I grew up around a lot of progs, I never, never fully understood the A-->B progress. Both parents were pretty rational and a little libertarianish.

I didn't quite know where I was as a teen, but I knew I wasn't left. They would misrepresent things in a conversation in realtime, and not accept that they'd done it. It creeped me out. I did get hold of some Ed Sector creepy left propaganda back then, helped me see *what* they were doing.

Even though they have seen both me and shooting they think it is just a loud noise at this point in time. The Watermelon demonstration is not yet understandable to them.

Once it is I will feel safe with them out in open some more.

490 I understand. I have no kids in home. When I did, guns were very secure, aka not available. Both my sons shoot, so they know what it is all about.

Have the ready and have them secure.

491 I think the back of the School Yard fight went out of style in the late 70's.

The anti bully movement came into being in the 80's and picked up steam in the 90's

No tolerance was the theme of 00's and has progressed to the point that you can suspended if your Pop Tart resembles a Pistol.

So yeah, unfortunately, I can see how fighting back is not an option for those who have been indoctrinated by public schooling.

Off hand, name one local Public School that has a Boxing Program or Club.

Posted by: cthulhu

Oh yeah. He was settled back in pretty quickly. Guarding the house, barking at every shadow or leaf on the front lawn, etc. Chasing off the birds & squirrels. Getting into the trashcan (half a stick of butter? Really, man?)

He got spoiled rotten at Mom's, too. You called that one.
The wind & rain has been messing with him some. We'll see what the next few days do to him.

When I was a kid, my family didn't have guns.....but my uncle's family did (uncle was a Marine). He had 'em on a gun rack hanging on the wall.

One day, my cousin and I were bouncing around on the back of the couch at my uncle's place.....and he made it very, very clear to me that I could bounce my ass onto the floor but that I'd better not try to touch the gun rack on the way down.

It really isn't that complicated -- my uncle had quite a few guns in his home while raising 3 kids and his home was safer than ours, because he kept discipline tight.

Knowing what I do, I'd be more afraid of him nipping one of the stewardesses -- especially if one were particularly fetching, with tentacles. He seems to get excited around such things.

When will these worthless, culturally destructive foundations dry up? They must by necessity, since they add nothing monetarily.

527 UGLY

The U.S. economy added just 142,000 jobs in September, falling short of what most economists had forecast. The unemployment rate remained at 5.1 percent, according to a separate survey. The two reports were released by the Department of Labor.

Economists had predicted about 190,000 new jobs were created last month. That would have been an improvement from August's figure of 173,000 jobs -- but last month's figure, already seen as anemic, was revised downward in Friday's report to just 136,000 jobs.

Summary:
Sept 142,000
Aug 136,000 (revised from 173,000)
U-3 5.1% (this will rise at the beginning of a real recovery, then drop)

The Democratic presidential front-runner is poised to appear on the long-running NBC sketch series during its season premiere this weekend, according to The New York Times.

Clinton's campaign and NBC would not confirm the under-wraps cameo to the paper.

The former secretary of State will reportedly appear in the "cold opening" sketch alongside cast member Kate McKinnon, who portrays Clinton on the show.
