The President likes talking about some deaths, but not so much about others. The President, who has yet to say the words "Kathy Steinle," will agitate for his political wish list at 6:20 eastern, 3:20 Pacific, or whenever he feels like it.
If this kid had no record or officially reported psychiatric condition, what "gun control" would have stopped him, apart from full confiscation, which the left claims to not desire? But of course they actually do favor that; they just won't say so, and their media enablers won't ask questions which could provoke them into confessing it. Reportedly, the killer advertised the coming massacre, in a general way ("the northwest," etc.) on a message forum. One anonymous guy seems to have encouraged him and given him tips. I would resist the urge to blame all the people on the message board -- what one guy says is not the fault of anyone else. A local newspaper in Rosenburg is reporting this:Kortney Moore, 18, from Rogue River, was in her Writing 115 class in Snyder Hall when one shot came through a window. She saw her teacher get shot in the head. The shooter was inside at that point, and he told people to get on the ground. The shooter was asking people to stand up and state their religion and then started firing away, Moore said. Moore was lying there with people who had been shot.A Twitter user claims her "grandma" works at the school and she says the shooter was specifically asking if they were Christian or not -- with Christians being shot, non-Christians being either shot in the legs or spared. But note that is just a Twitter user going by the name @BodhiLooney claiming that; we have no idea who this person is, if she actually has a "grandma" at the school (a grandma?), or what. I put up a post noting this before putting it back into draft before I realized that these two strands of information -- 1, that the killer asked about religion, and 2, that he was specifically targeting Christians -- are on completely different planes of reliability. The former is being reported by a newspaper and they attribute it to a named witness they assumedly spoke with; the latter is being claimed by twitter user "@BodhiLooney." So I would not put any stock at all in that claim until a named witness clarifies this point. She could be totally on the level, or she could not be, or this could be a game of telephone where words get botched along the line. Gun Free Slaughterhouse: Of course. My, these gun-free zones work so well! For murderers, I mean.

It doesn't really matter, though, if it would have stopped it, or not.
What needs to happen is that, if he were on psychiatric drugs known to have homicidal maniac side effects, then the prescribing physician(s) must bear some civil liability (limited liability, but enough) and any shootings that happen in "gun free" zones need to also bring civil liability to those who made and administered the "gun free zones". Institutions/businesses are free to make their places "gun free zones" but they then have to be held liable for any shooters who take advantage of the defenseless nature of those "gun free" zones.

Sheriff in Oregon has said that the shooter was 20 years old. No other information, reports are that they have identified him, identified the vehicle he drove, and have already obtained a search warrant for his apartment.
My guess is they don't want what happened in Boston, with roomies or friends destroying evidence. We'll probably learn his name later this evening.

Of the remaining 10,000 or so, IIRC something like 6-7,000 are the bruthas smoking each other in the 'hood.
The white overall murder rate in America is about the same as Belgium's, i.e., in the middle of the European league tables. Our murder problem is pretty much down to the blacks (where black-on-black murders are the leading cause of death of black males 15-35). Period. So start gonging on them.

In Israel, pretty much every 18 year old guy has a submachine gun and most must carry them in the streets when they are out. Almost all households have machine guns around (for reserve service). Yet, the murder rate by guns in Israel is about ... zero. It used to actually be zero but the Russian emigres have clicked it up a little bit. We already know we can not keep illegal alcohol out of the country, and we are slowly beginning to suspect that we can't keep illegal drugs out of the country, and we can see that we don't have immigration regulations when the federal government refuses to enforce them.
So it follows that we can't keep illegal guns out of the country either. All that will happen are the honest citizens who do not commit murder will be disarmed and the criminals will be armed.
Trying to disarm law abiding citizens will have nothing to do with stopping criminal behavior because the law abiding citizens are not the problem.

Actually, we should be glad of this - because they've been doing this for decades after every horrific shooting and this is the one issue where they have been spectacularly unsuccessful. CBS and Little Shep can lecture Americans until they're blue in the face - it doesn't work. Actually, the amount of cotton being grown has dropped off dramatically. Also, most of the old crop insurance is gone; my best friend farms soybeans and almost got wiped out by flooding earlier this year. Fed insurance not available...if that family farmer gets wiped out, big AgriBusiness has an easier time buying them out.

This happened decades ago in Canada where a gunman killed a bunch of women in an engineering class in Montreal - Marc Lepine. But even then, I wondered, why no pictures of the guy - even 20+ years ago, there were pictures of everything.

Sheriff during press conference this afternoon said that his officers were shot at by the perp and they shot back. The suspect was "neutralized". He was then asked if the shooter was dead or alive and he said the was "deceased'. I detected a certain hidden satisfaction on the sheriff's face.

It's purely high-risk, high-reward, if you fail, massive losses now. The protection is gone, because farmers on that scale do not donate to politicians on the scale of a company like ConAgra.
