Surprise! Russia's First Bombing Run Isn't Against ISIL, But Against US-Backed Secular Rebels

Of course.

Remember, all of Obama's super-close Interesting Foreign Friends are just here to help us n stuff. At least, that's the fantasy our daydreaming president likes to indulge.

Russia launched airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, catching U.S. and Western officials off guard and drawing new condemnation as evidence suggested Moscow wasn't targeting extremist group Islamic State, but rather other opponents of Bashar al-Assad's regime.

One of the airstrikes hit an area primarily held by rebels backed by the Central Intelligence Agency and allied spy services, U.S. officials said, catapulting the Syrian crisis to a new level of danger and uncertainty. Moscow's entry means the world's most powerful militaries--including the U.S., Britain and France--now are flying uncoordinated combat missions, heightening the risk of conflict in the skies over Syria.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Russia's approach to the Syrian war--defending Mr. Assad while ostensibly targeting extremists--was tantamount to "pouring gasoline on the fire."

"I have been dealing with them for a long time. And this is not the kind of behavior that we should expect professionally from the Russian military," Mr. Carter said at a Pentagon news conference.

Oh, they're not acting "professionally." What a fierce condemnation.

Russia is going after the US-backed secular rebels because they're the main moral threat to Assad, though not the main military threat. The main military threat is ISIS, but of course the West is willing, in theory, to bomb ISIS. (In theory -- Obama has been conducting desultory air strikes on ISIS that chiefly seem designed to impact American news media headlines.)

But the non-ISIS-aligned rebels are a force the world would generally welcome in place of Assad, so they need to be taken out ASAP. Plus, they're backed by the CIA, so Russia wants to eradicate these American-leaning elements.

Listen to how weakly our Secretary of Defense simpers on:

...

"It does appear that they were in areas where there probably were not ISIL forces, and that is precisely one of the problems with this whole approach," said Mr. Carter, the U.S. defense chief.

U.S. officials said it was unclear if Moscow directly targeted a location held by the CIA-backed fighters in western Syria because of their association with the U.S.'s covert program to fund, arm and train the rebels.

1, this is not a "problem" with the Russian approach, this is the whole point of the Russian approach, and 2, it is plenty "clear" what Russia is up to.

But Obama, however, is forced to cover for our actual enemies, to spin on their behalves, for to admit what they were actually doing would be to admit his own weakness and impotency.

So he has to make up a fairy tale about Russia, to save himself.

Not only that, Kerry had to stand with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and babble impotently about "deconfliction discussions" while Russia was blowing up American allies.

"Deconfliction" is apparently just keeping your jets out of each other's airspace so they don't shoot at one another (and spark World War Three, though we know that won't happen with limpwrist Obama; we'll just apologize for our pilots getting in the way of Russian air-to-air missiles).

Update: I just realized Kerry wasn't talking about jets, primarily -- he was pretending that Russia didn't know they were bombing US allies, that it was a mistake which a "deconfliction discussion" could have cured.

Pathetic attempt at face-saving.

Video of the humiliating spectacle at the above link.

Iranian ground troops will be sweeping in to further attack US interests.

Remember, Iran told Obama that if he gave them the bomb they would fix all that's broken in the Middle East for him, and Obama believed him, because weak people are forced to believe whatever promises are made to them. They have no other options but to trust that someone will help them.

These Iranian forces are under the command of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the Quds Force commander in charge of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s international operations, which runs a network of proxy forces throughout the Middle East, including Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon.

Fox News first reported a secret meeting between Soleimani and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place in late July. Part of the discussions between Soleimani and Putin was the future Russian build up in Syria, coordinated closely with Iran.

Suleimani is a terrorist, and his travel is restricted by Western governments due to his status as terrorist.

That meeting was of course during a key moment of the Iran Nuke talks. Didn't take any wind out of Obama's sails, though.

Krauthammer sums it all up.

"The Soviet Ministry announces they hit ISIS targets. Everyone knows it is a lie, like all of the lies that were issued in the Ukraine," Krauthammer said. "They were not hitting ISIS. ISIS isn't in the area. They were hitting... a stronghold for the Free Syrian Army."

Krauthammer labeled Russia’s actions as "humiliating" for the United States, as military leaders were given little more than an hour’s notice of plans for strikes in Syria.

Moreover, he said the Obama administration is failing to act as Russia takes charge in the region, referencing Secretary of State John Kerry’s afternoon media availability with his Russian counterpart.

"[Kerry was] saying, 'Well, you know, we’ve got a little problem about the nature of the targets Russia attacked today, but we’ll go on with other stuff about that later,'" Krauthammer said.

Video at the link.

By the Way: Note how easily Putin could have made this on Obama, had he chosen to. He could have bombed ISIS positions for a week, establishing goodwill, then turned to his real targets, the American-backed Free Syrian Army. Obama could have then spluttered something about "a lot of good" having been done already, and taking the good with the bad.

But Putin does not think that Obama warrants that minimal level of face-saving. Or that America is owed even that little bit of face-saving.

No, he wants us to know what he's doing, and he wants us to know it because he knows then that we have little choice but to accept it, and even endorse it-- so long as this crew of effeminate sybarites is command of the US military and intelligence forces.

Exactly what I have been saying for the last year. The game was always being played at the UN not the US Congress. Once the UN voted for the deal the Russians were free to start planning with their proxy, Iran, and help turn them loose in the Middle East.

This is the flexibility Obama was talking about giving Russia.

I'm not sure that's right. They're the best equipped group, but also much smaller, I think, than ISIS. Both of which lend some military reasoning for going after them first. And given our current presidents quality of character, Putin can be assured of walking Obama into reacting how he wants. I expect that Putin, aside from wanting to offer something openly embarrassing, also thinks this will give the US reason to bail on it's strategy of arming those groups. Weaken and eliminate them, and largely the US, then he can turn to the longer game which is ISIS.

Germany almost has to take them on because you do not want The Balkans collapsing snd you want the coastal areas to be stable.

That's important when you consider the vast air armada ISIS possesses. You don't want to mistake an American strike aircraft for an Islamic State one.

The same militants that we have been training and arming have been defecting to the more successful extremist groups anyway so guess what, even if Russia was targeting ISIS and al-Nusra, we could STILL say that Russia was attacking "our" militants because that's how fucked up and crazy and uncontrollable the situation is on the ground over there.

I don't think Russia cares one way or another about our best interests - Putin knows that Americans have never been the aggressive imperialists our own Prog-tards have accused us of being, and that he has nothing to fear from us, really.

However, I do think Russia (and Putin in particular) do care a great deal about harming our stated interests - proving us in the eyes of the world to be feckless and impotent.

167 The UN Mandate, was ratified by Congress, thus having the force of US Law.

It is against the UN Mandate to attempt to overthrow a UN Member State, without a Security Council Resolution. There is no such resolution.

It is therefore, illegal under US Law, to arm and train the opponents of Assad, without at least some Congressional cover.

You can attempt to stretch the Use of Force for the War on Terror to cover Assad, by declaring him a Taliban supporter... but they are shooting at him... so kind of a tough stretch no matter what legal sophistry you use.

Vlad Putin, is bombing in support of a UN Member State, who has ASKED him to come in... and he got explicit permission from the Duma to intervene...

176 I don't know quite where to start on this. Let me see...

1. Barky's M.O. has been to be on the wrong side of every conflict in the Middle East. Every damned time. So calling the "secular" (yeah, riiiight) opponents to Assad "American allies" is stretching the truth a bit. If they are Barky's allies, they are enemies of America.

2. If Putin is concentrating a lot of his military assets into Syria, well, that's a good thing, IMHO. Probably reduces the risk of him taking a military adventure into the Baltics, or into Poland. I care about people in Poland, and in Latvia, and Lithuania, and Estonia. Syria? Iraq? Sorry, sports, I'm right out of fucks to give.

3. Given that Barky appointed the clowns at State, and the the clowns in the CIA, why are surprised when a clown show erupts?

This all could have been avoided if we had simply come out and backed and armed the heck out of a Kurdish state in parts of Syria and Iraq and therefore we would have some major leverage. Instead we wanted to be "inclusive" and listen to the Saudis and Turks...two useless allies who have spent most of their time stabbing us in the back.

Remember this is the same CIA who thought it was cool to help Libyan rebels, the same guys who bumped off our embassy, etc.

Russia now has taken the opportunity to win a victory due to our own incompetence and support for FSA...a group that was going nowhere, and if it did would not exactly set up a government that America would like.

250 Let get things straight,
Syria has long been a client state of Russia,
it's only a wonder Putin waited this long seeing how
ineffectual Obama has been.

Secondly, these secular rebels are no such thing,
Lol, they are lesser Islamists than ISIS,
no great loss to having the Russians take them out
before they go genocidal on the Christians.

This has long been in the Assad playbook,
let ISIS wreck their destruction and either the
Russians or the West would eventually remove them
in time from Syria.

But first, the bigger threat to Assad's regime were these other
Islamist groups, so this all seems to be going according to plan
and Assad will hold on and recapture a goodly amount of
Syrian territory as well as purging the hostile Sunnis from
Syria at the same time, and the Russians act as a count-balancing
force to too much Iranian expansionism in Syria - sure Assad
requires the Iranians hel, but he want to continue the dominance of
his Alawites.

Now THAT makes sense to me. I like this theory. If ammo retailers are forced to have their own warehouses, they can't cost share. That means their overhead costs rise. This puts small ammo retailers out of business. When you have fewer players, you increase cost to consumer, and it also gives the anti 2nd-ers fewer, and fatter targets to focus on.

That way, the media could just go and say, "... and this is how (dumbass, corruptocrat politician X) responded to the allegations."

I think your definition of a valid election and mine differ. The former president was jailed in what most believe was a politically motived attack and that opened the door for Yanukovych. It was his choosing to partner with Russia over the EU that caused a popular uprising and forced him out.

And not a thing the US did to support the uprising was illegal.

(From March '14)

The Charge Against the Light Bringer

Half a world, half a world,
half a world over,
While our President dithers,
Our enemies grow bolder.
'Forward! Hope and Change!'
'Confiscate their guns!' He said:
While our nation grows weak
Our enemies grow bolder.

'Forward! Hope and Change!'
Who knew that we were play'd?
Not those bumpersticker'd
With that mantra display'd:
"Because shut up," their reply,
"We don't need a reason why,"
"Why don't you f-off and die!"
While our nation grows weak
Our enemies grow bolder.

Reid to the left of him,
Pelosi to the other left of him,
Maddow in front of them,
Hector'd and scold'd;
Peddling lies they had to sell,
Bald faced and shameless to tell,
While jawboning us to death,
While our nation goes to Hell
Our enemies grow bolder.

Rhetoric empty and bare,
Rhetoric hangs in air,
Red lines that aren't really there,
Waiting and watching while
All the world wonder'd:
Far from the tear-gas smoke,
Through your 'red line' they broke,
Fascist and Russian
Delver'd the fatal stroke;
A nation now sunder'd.
While our nation dither'd
Our enemies grew bolder.

Reid to the left of him,
Pelosi to the other left of him,
Maddow in front of them,
Hector'd and scold'd;
Peddling lies they had to sell,
While our ambassador fell,
With those who fought so well,
"What difference does it make?"

From hearts darkened by Hell,
And our nation goes to sleep,
Our enemies grow bolder.

Why does our glory fade?
O the promises made!
All the world wonder'd.
Dishonor'd 'Hope and Change',
Dishonor'd to our shame,
Our enemies embolden'd!

350 I was never any fan of the Bush administration. But it's instructive to recall how liberals spoke back then.

Liberals said at the time that after Bu$hitler and KKKheney were finally gone, the adults would be back in charge. And the country would then have a Democratic president who actually read intelligence reports, and who listened to what his generals had to say.

And that is indeed just what we have now. To wit:

A Democratic president who reads intelligence reports -- brief reports which have been carefully tailored in advance to suit his personal predilections, winnowing out all dissenting views and contrary data.

A Democratic president who listens to his generals -- generals who are a handpicked gaggle of careerist toadies, automatic yes men, and affirmative action nonentities, all guaranteed to never challenge his views.

And yes, it was Yanukovych who had her jailed and she was released after he fled, in 2014.

And yes, the uprising was popular which is why pro-Russian alignment force he was pushing lost. A poll in August of 2015 showed 66% of the population wanted a relationship, 28% did not. That is what is known as a landslide.

Had Yanukovych not tried to buck popular opinion and align with Russia, there would not have been an uprising. The fact that there was a not just an uprising but a successful tends to support the fact that most were not happy with his pro-Russian moves whatever polls say at any given moment.

As I said, I know Assad is a brutal dictator, but at the same time I get the impression that for whatever reason the folks in the Middle East have a hard time producing anything other than a brutal dictator. Obviously the Russians (re) took the measure of our leadership last week and concluded: "mush, keep pushing."

Worse, there were all these stories about Russian "build up" weeks ago, and Admin equivocation that it was a "build up" but promises to get to the bottom of Russian intentions. If the issue wasn't raised, or was raised and the Russkies decided its OK to just flip us off with a blatant lie to a pressing, direct issues, we are truly seen as the giant pussy in the room.

On another level, our whole policy towards Syria is probably worse than the Russian policy. That is, we are seeking to destabilize yet another ruthless horrible dictator in the ME (which is at least a stable actor vis a vis Israel and terrorism) to likely replace it with nutty jihadis who will turn that country into another Libya. So the Russkies by supporting the strong man status quo may actually have a clearer picture of both our mutual interests than us --only it has been handled in such a way by us and them as to diminish US power and project Russian power.

And just look at the cast of characters to the rest of the world.
