Most
of the "West" has not been that successful. It has primarily been those
countries settled by the British who enjoyed more economic freedom,
starting with the Magna Carter.

And if you look at the
places that are really doing good economically now you will find Hong
Cong and Singapore who STILL have economic freedom and who are not eat
up with stifling socialism.

And since Obama we have been dropping precipitously in the economic freedom department and our economy is shit.

Then the entire party, eight of us, miss all connections. Finally make Prague six hour after original time, and guess what?

39 This morning's dump really cheered me up, particularly the Harsanyi one about the GOP buffoons and the pseudo-investigation of PP.

I have never seem any televised Congressional committee hearings that didn't forcefully remind me what a bunch of shallow, lazy, stupid, corrupt, unprincipled, undisciplined, and incompetent people "we" have elected to represent us!

The Representatives on this committee had one job yet they were able to fvck up a freebie and score zero points!

The bonus is that the DC Cartel have already rigged the game to ensure their PP cronies will get taxpayer dollars to launder into sweet campaign contributions (or in Boehner's case a lobbying slot on K Street).

50 And now some, words of wisdom on Bernie Sanders from a teen who attends our local high school:

"The term "socialist" may sound threatening, but his [Sanders'] views on issues in this nation make him appealing...

It may sound overly sentimental, but our country was built on the basis of freedom and opportunity for all. Now Germany has taken that title since it has welcomed Syrian refugees with open arms...

Unlike Sanders, however, a majority of Republicans candidates use religion as an excuse to degrade and discriminate against same sex couple since they're completely oblivious too the fact that American is a democracy, not a theocracy. If Bernie Sanders were to become President it is inevitable that an even more just and tolerant society would be established."

52 The GOP Is Overmatched

The hearings only confirmed my suspicions that the GOPe really doesn't want PP to go away. Whether it's because they actually use them to dispose of - shall we say, inconvenient evidence - or because they simply want them around as a cynical fundraising ploy, I don't know.

At least Fiorina is showing some spine: "I support your health care. I don't support butchering babies."

55 Since Vic bought the convo forward here is my reply:

@203 @15 Vic yes I know about the Anglosphere but let's look at colonialism for a second - it wasn't just England, but the Dutch and Germans and Spanish and Portuguese and Italians, who are not Anglophone, out there expanding their worlds.

Portugal no longer has a Papal mandate to rule half of the world, but even today its better to live there than, say, Mozambique.

I know that reflexively we are supposed to think that colonialism was always and everywhere a bad thing, but we live in a former colony and we wouldn't be who we are if it weren't for that.

86 It is fairly obvious Republicans don't really care about abortion except to raise funds.

These guys can't argue against abortion because ultimately they don't care about it. They ape the words so pro-life groups will endorse them and pro-lifers will vote for them, but they don't understand any of the arguments.

But then, the Pope came and went without so much as commenting on all this Planned Parenthood stuff.

Does anybody actually care that this is going on?

Just be glad I didn't put up the editorial from the girl who says the bible says nothing against against gay marriage ( Yes. Hello! I wonder why that is?!!) and compares Kim Davis not issuing marriages to Muslim cashiers not refusing to sell bacon at Shop Rite citing it's against their religion. Ooooookay!

JFTR, I think the government should get out of license business altogether and issue civil unions and that churches should be free to define marriage as they see fit, but those kids have no idea what is going on. I can't blame them; I wasn't clued in at age 17 either, but both of these kids may be voting on the 2016 elections. Sigh

I've often thought that one of the things that went wrong after WW II is that the Brits dismantled the Empire. Truly civilized colonies would eventually have become free, and the really bad ones would have had a fundamental civilization imposed on them. And yes, I realize that for a number of reasons it wasn't going to happen!

Current events call out for colonies, though. Hey, self-described refugee, you want a nice stable life under German law? Try our habitation in Southwest Africa! Want to join LaFrance? Fine. Russia has devolved into pretty much a gas station with a lot of weapons. Their entire economy and power requires access to energy products. They used the threat of Who Controls Barter Town to bring Europe to it's knees and over the Ukraine crisis and allowing them to control the Middle East gives them access to an enormous amount of oil.

Unlike the US, Russia really will go in and take their oil. And with a deep sea port in Syria for both their military and as a transit point for oil and gas they will gain a lot of power over the region and beyond.

Obama has given up control of the Middle East to Russia and the South China Sea to China. He has allowed two weaker opponents to gain enormous geopolitical strength at virtually no cost.

That seems bad to me.

Maybe, just maybe, people should consider that the general public already knows what PP does for a living, and while they may not be "cool with it," it isn't something they care to think about or vote on the basis of. They just want it to go away.

So, that being the case, what do pro-life people need to do if they really want abortion severely restricted and/or nearly eliminated?

Be strident assholes, and try to force an uncaring, doesn't want to think about it public to think about it? That approach has been tried and has diminishing returns.

Or, do as NRTL has chosen to do, and work to get a Republican president elected with a Republican Congress next year and enact the executive orders and legislation that will accomplish the goal.

No, I have not. I am a bit too sensitive for the modern art of gore. But thats neither here nor there. The important questions are:

1. Did actually something illegal happen? As disgusting as these things PP may be, if they are legal under the regulations that regulates organ donation, Republicans will basically run against a wall.

I like ace's point that, by their standard, we should never believe anything we're ever told by the MFM, because all stories are "heavily edited."

If "heavily edited" == "untrue" then, by extension, everything you see on the news, read about in the newspaper, or hear about on "a Meet the Press type NPR show" must be untrue. Even live shots are "heavily edited." They're planned and scripted and produced to provide the best entertainment along with whatever information they're supposed to provide.

But, of course, that's not the issue. The issue isn't that she doesn't believe them because they're "heavily edited." She *does* believe them, or would if she allowed herself to think things through logically. So she won't allow herself to do that.

244 "So showing an unwilling public the butchery that is being done in their name using public money is "assholish?""

Not in the least. I never said it was.

The key, however, is the words you used. "Unwilling public." Holding hearings is perfectly appropriate and needed. Voting to restrict funding is perfectly appropriate and needed.

When things start to get assholish and ultimately self-defeating is grandstanding on a government shutdown. Yes, Ted Cruz, I'm looking at you.

They don't have the votes to override a certain veto. Obama will not suffer in the least for vetoing it. You need to accept this. It is reality.

The only thing that suffers is the pro-life cause because a shut-down over this issue that most people don't want to think about will make it harder to elect a Republican president next year, who can actually do something about abortion and PP funding.

You want emotional catharsis now instead of actual results next year. Reevaluate your priorities.

A) it's not the aircraft that presents a problem... although those aircraft piloted by Soviet Pilots and guided by sophisticated Russian ground control does present a problem.

B) And more worrisome is that the Russians are building a sophisticated Air Cover for their forces in Syria that will cover the entire Eastern Med.

1. Did actually something illegal happen? As disgusting as these

2. How credible are the videos? And regarding the Fiorina situation

Do you aspire to stupid? Because even that seems to be beyond your reach.

1- The videos indicate there is at least a real possibility something illegal happened. We call this "reasonable suspicion" and it's always a good enough reason to at least open a real investigation.

2- The videos are at least credible enough that the MFM won't show them. If there were *not* credible, they would get plenty of air time in order to discredit them (and, by extension, Pro Lifers). Here, whether or not you have viewed them is completely "the point." If you haven't viewed them, you cannot speak to their credibility and so you must logically rely on those who have. Since those who have viewed them pretty well universally call them credible, that would indicate they are credible. Those proclaiming their incredulity are almost 100% also people who claim (proudly) that they have not watched them.

There, I've answered the questions. Now we can talk about the incompetence of congressional Republicans again.

It would be wise for those who suggest that what has been recorded, either as conversation describing the procedures used by the abortionist, or the video of fetal remains is simply legal, yet unpleasant to listen to in clinical term, or unpleasant to watch, compare these points to the applicable Federal law regulating the harvesting of fetal tissue for research.

294 VA GOP Sucks, we're arguing about tactics.

You think that shutting down the government over PP will redound to the GOP's benefit and further the pro-life cause. I think evidence shows that is incorrect. Trende has a chart showing the Congressional generic ballot last cycle. Democrats were absolutely crushing Republicans all throughout the shutdown time-frame. Once it resolved and other things took it's place, the Rs got their mojo back in time for the 2014 election. Shutdowns are a loser for Rs. they make our job harder for next year. These are facts demonstrated by contemporaneous data.

I believe that getting past the next election with a win will be more long-term productive. You think that is missing an opportunity to convince people that Obama is bad.

People's opinions about Obama are set. He isn't going to be on the ballot next year. We need to get over thinking we can do anything to hurt him or diminish him. We can't. Get over it.

299 Your confusing the capabilities of Russian and Soviet client states and the 2nd line technologies and 6th line Military personal vs front line Russian technology and Russian troops

Posted by: Nevergiveup at September 30, 2015 10:07 AM (DUoqb)

Conversely, the front-line Russian Soviet technology/troops combination haven't gone up against front-line Western opposition since the Korean War (and that was air-to-air only).

300 The "right thing" is ending, r at least severely restricting abortion, yes?

Well, guess what? That isn't going to happen absent a Republican sweep in 13 months. So, to my way of thinking, anything that stands in the way of that result is an impediment to that result.

People on this board are always complaining that the Republicans won't "die on this hill." Well, paraphrasing Patton, I don't want Republicans to die an any hills. I want the Democrats to die on their hills.

If you think a President Rubio or President Christie or President Bush or President Fiorina would be less likely to get pro-life legislation out of a Republican Congress and enacted into law than a President Clinton or President Sanders, you're fucking delusional.

Big picture. Deferred gratification. You know, conservative values in life. Stop wanting it all now, emotional catharsis crap. It'll cost us the bigger win that actually matters.

by the GOP reflect the values of the majority of the Horde."

Maybe not. But I'll take somebody who agrees with me 75-85% of the time over somebody who agrees with me 0% of the time, and that's what you get if Democrats win.

Posted by: trumpetdaddy at September 30, 2015 10:35 AM (ljZD2)

306 No. They never consider it.

They are convinced that there exists some secret horde of previously-undiscovered voters pining away for the Republicans to be as strident and assholish as possible on a wide range of issues. If only all our candidates talked like the worst liberal stereotype of a conservative (the role Trump is currently playing for the benefit of the media), then we would sweep to 50 state landslides!

Yeah. Not so much.
Posted by: trumpetdaddy at September 30, 2015 09:43 AM (ljZD2)

----------------------------

Events and facts have shown there is not a secret horde of moderate voters willing to go all in for the GOP if they were just more like the Democrats.

The GOPe strategy of sticking it in the eye of the base at all possible points to appeal to moderates is not working.

308 This is a big moment for the pro-life cause. Abortion is less popular than at any time in 40 years. People broadly favor restrictions on abortion more than ever. States with unified Republican control are restricting abortion to the extent possible given Federal court rulings.

It is a moment when a Republican Congress, allied with a Republican president, can do on the national level what has been happening on the state level. And will be able to appoint at least one, and maybe up to three conservative USSC justices to further whittle Roe down in future cases.

If we don't piss it all away by being too strident now.

NRTL has made their choice and they are choosing the big picture. It's the right call if what we really want is to virtually end abortion.

If what we want instead is for Ted Cruz to get an additional 30 seconds on the evening news and some more material for his fundraising letters, well....

Gotta make your choice.

Does not compute, does not compute.

Your saying the abortion issue is now to our advantage, but we shouldn't take advantage of it.

We've heard this refrain before:

trumpetdaddy 2015 - we can't do anything about abortion right now because we have an election coming up in 2016 and can't risk it.

trumpetdaddy Jan 2017 - we can't do anything about abortion right now because we have an election coming up in 2018 and can't risk it.

Same refrain over and over and over and over.

Personally, I believe that unless the American public demonstrates their full support for all conservative issues by electing a Republican super majority in the House, Senate, and gives the Republicans a 47 state mandate for the White House from 2016 to 2024, we should not risk dying on any hills to preserve the viability of the conservative movement!

Yes, and during that time lets do as much as we can sticking it in the eye of conservatives just to make sure we have a real mandate. Once we know we can pass as much liberal and moderate legislation as we want then we know we can move forward with the conservative goals of lower taxes for the most wealthy, increasing spying on citizens and the like.

314 I can kind of understand the WaPo reporter's position that he doesn't want to view graphic stuff. It's kind of like how I don't want to view some PETA video about slaughterhouses, I just wanna eat my damn steak and not think about it. Or how civilians that have ever urged military action as a solution somewhere don't want to look at disturbing pictures of war.

If you think that abortion is overall a net good for society, you are probably aware on some level that there is a very nasty side of it that would turn your stomach if you had to look at it, which you can handle intellectually but not on the emotional level that pictures evoke. The intellectual level is the correct one on which to make policy decisions, of course. He's wrong to have fallen into the trap about "women's health", which is nonsense based on the statistics we know about PP. But he's not wrong on the face of it to say essentially "I'm on the same page as you about this baby-parts stuff, but viewing graphic pictures sheds no light on the topic."

I wanted our local GOP chairman to run for the congressional seat against the idiot we have in there, but he's in the same position as me. We're not wealthy enough not to work, but we sure can't continue our lifestyles on 174K.

And our wives are certainly not going to cut back to chase the dream.

Another friend would have been perfect in the senate - hell, he even looks like a senator - but he's got a successful powder coating business that brings him 400 - 500K income a year. 3 girls in college, 1 of which is doing Olympic volleyball. He would love to run, but can't afford it.

Certainly there are a lot of successful people employees (not even company owners) making 300K with 100K bonuses that wouldn't give that up to "serve the country" for half that in a high cost of living area where your main job is really begging low lives for money.

317 "Your saying the abortion issue is now to our advantage, but we shouldn't take advantage of it."

No, I am saying that benefiting Ted Cruz' fundraising isn't how I prefer to "take advantage of it." Especially because I believe that following his preferred tactics (which redound primarily to benefit his fundraising) will blow the advantage up and hurt our chances of taking advantage of it for something more substantial than his fundraising, like actually restricting abortion.

We aren't going to prevail in a shutdown fight nor are we going to eliminate PP funding while Obama is in office. So, why the fuck would I want to piss away the historical trend advantage for two things that are futile, when if I wait 13 months, I can get what I actually want?
