3 Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, September 30, 2015. On this day in 1938 at 2:00 am, Britain, France, Germany and Italy signed the Munich Agreement, allowing Germany to occupy the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia. And thus they received "peace in our time". Most people view this as a sell-out of Czechoslovakia and it showed Hitler that he could get pretty much anything he wanted which ultimately led to WWII. And history is now repeating itself using the same strategy in Georgia Putin is grabbing up Baltic countries.

4 The assault by government forces to retake Kunduz from the Taliban has failed miserably. Another great foreign policy win for Obama.

5 Scankles is still raking in major cash from rich cronies.

Despite Hillary Clinton's coming out against the Keystone XL pipeline, the Democratic presidential candidate appeared at a fundraiser Friday with major Democratic donors who are heavily invested in the oil and gas industry.

I'm sure they expect a return on their investment. Previous mega-donors sure got their return.

6 Trey Gowdy will try to get Huma to sell out Scankles before his Benghazi committee. One wonders if the spineless and corrupt Republican leadership has given him permission to really go after her. Odds are she will not sell Scankles out unless he has some serious evidence of major felonies. If he doesn't then grilling her is a waste of time.

8 When the United Nations approved a massive agenda of sustainable development goals last week, it over-rode pointed warnings by two international science councils that the program is in many ways uncoordinated, unmeasurable and unrealistically ambitious.

"Sustainable development" is dog-whistle for pushing more socialism, transfer of wealth from the US, and more global warming BS. Of course Obama will support this BS. We should be dropping out of the UN because it is virtually worthless for what it was created for.

I do not think the average person knowledgeable in firearms would consider a .177 cal BB gun a firearm, even if it uses a CO2 cartridge. Even the firearms control act of the 60s did not include such as this.

Apparently because we aren't rising up in armed rebellion over it, it isn't really an important issue and we are just posturing.

That's what I heard the other day, anyway.

Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk at September 30, 2015 07:05 AM (88fBD)

43 Air guns have changed since Ralphie. No, they are not "firearms" nor should they be included in firearms control legislation. I believe in the 19th century sense of the word "felon." A felon is something less than a full citizen. Yes, we have too many felonies. You don't solve that by giving felons weaponry and the vote.

Simply prohibit felons from possessing any "projectile launcher" over a certain velocity and foot-poundage. Also, it's obviously a Walther: this subject might have been violating his conditions by having a replica of a real firearm even if it would not shoot. You can hold people up with those, too, if you're felonious enough.

The music is by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA and the lyrics by Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Tycoon, c.), so it's very much in the Andrew Lloyd Webber mode. It's a cult musical, but people who like it (myself included) are passionate about it.

87 Quoting from Chess, wow. Talk about obscura. Odd subject choice for a musical that only managed to produce One Night in Bangkok

When Steven King was approached by the writers of Carrie: The Musical (one of Broadway's legendary bombs), his response was, "well, if they can make a musical out of a muderous barber,* then a musical of Carrie makes perfect sense."

I read somewhere - it may even have been in Mark Steyn's Broadway Babies Say Goodnight - that anything really can be the subject of a musical; the test is, do you have the talent to make it entertaining? The sinking of the Titanic, for example, was the basis of the 1997 show of the same name; it's got an absolutely sumptuous score by the composer Maury Yeston (and, again, it's a musical which has passionate defenders). That show, though grounded in tragedy, was entertaining. In contrast, Parade (about the Leo Frank lynching) and The Scottsboro Boys were examples of Broadway's annoying modernist trend of hectoring the audience for their sins.

*Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, if you didn't know.

The short answer is definitely YES. I knew a woman who slipped on a wet floor at a McDonald's and broke her ankle. She had to have surgery it was broken so bad. She sued for medical expenses, plus a little for 'pain and suffering'. Mickey D's settled.

Now the above is assuming you weren't playing the 'slip and fall' game.

171 @142 MP4, I am pleased to hear it. It has long-been on my short-list.
Also, it's from that short era of sound movies with no music. The only music is when someone plays the radio. I love film music, immoderately, but it was a fascinating interlude. And, silent movie fans hated sound because they thought music was gone from films forever!

I see that a hicks-from-the-sticks movement, orchestras performing the score while the film runs for the concert audience, has finally arrived in NYC. The Philharmonic did "On The Waterfront," which is a good score by "the other Bernstein" -- their old conductor. His only film score. Cousin Elmer stayed busier.

Under Texas' homeschool laws, any one parent can withdraw their child from public schools simply by stating that they intend to homeschool the little bugger. No oversight by the school district. No notice to the other parent who may not be married at the time to the withdrawing parent. No verification that the special snowflake is indeed enrolled in some accredited education course somewhere. Just gone *poof* off the education grid and totally up to said parent to handle things.

Bianca,

Go get a personal injury lawyer before talking to the store manager. There are dozens who will gladly take your case without a nickel from you.

Most will want 30 to 40 percent of the settlement after expenses.

Of course, all your medical bills will be paid, with the only thing to be determined is pain and suffering and any punitive damages.

If you're reasonable, I would expect a quick settlement. You need to get the security tapes of that day before they're routinely erased.

193 Morning, all.

Just a quick tip for those who are on tablet/phone. I had noticed this site was eating up my data plan like crazy and determined it was from the ads. It took me a while to figure out how to block them, but I finally did.

In your mobile browser settings, find the settings for JavaScript. Block Javascript for this page or turn it completely off as I do, just be aware that a lot of sites won't work properly. You can add exceptions for sites you want to allow JS.

This has gotten rid of the ads on the page and cut my data usage in half.

My tip of the day.

195 I would have to disagree somewhat with Steyn on this. If you look back on the history of the marxist movements in the Western Hemisphere, you will see that they never believed in what made Freedom and Prosperity possible.

They have been actively working against those Freedoms for over a 150 years.

I don't think that most of the "West" attributes its success to "freedom" and "capitalism." The success of Western culture goes back a couple thousand years and liberty, as such, has been a thing for only a minor portion of that, and is really almost uniquely American.

No, Western culture used to hold itself in high esteem, and thought it was better because it was actually better. Western culture's success and progress was a good thing, whether it was the favor of the gods or of God or whatever.

But now the success of the West now is considered by our elites to be a sign not that it is inherently better, but that it is inherently worse. This is why art is no longer about beauty. It is why the carbon in the atmosphere - which is the journal of Man's progress - must be scrubbed. It is why we must prostrate ourselves to others who have not been successful - we must atone for our success.

Most of the "West" has not been that successful. It has primarily been those countries settled by the British who enjoyed more economic freedom, starting with the Magna Carter.

And if you look at the places that are really doing good economically now you will find Hong Cong and Singapore who STILL have economic freedom and who are not eat up with stifling socialism.

And since Obama we have been dropping precipitously in the economic freedom department and our economy is shit.

Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at September 30, 2015 08:45 AM (NeFrd)

205 @202, well, yes. Of course.

The success of the West is a badge of shame for all the "right thinking" people.

Think about this - how many times have you heard that the US has only x% of the world's population but we use y% of the world's resources?

Maybe because we make z% of the world's income, and the resources aren't the world's they are ours because we bought them?

It is that sense of shame that is driving the refugee love in Europe - their elites do not believe that their countries are better because their cultures are better - someone should just come and take their success away because it was all ill gotten anyway.

Posted by: blaster at September 30, 2015 08:47 AM (2Ocf1)

206 @203 Vic yes I know about the Anglosphere but let's look at colonialism for a second - it wasn't just England, but the Dutch and Germans and Spanish and Portuguese and Italians, who are not Anglophone, out there expanding their worlds.

Portugal no longer has a Papal mandate to rule half of the world, but even today its better to live there than, say, Mozambique.

I know that reflexively we are supposed to think that colonialism was always and everywhere a bad thing, but we live in a former colony and we wouldn't be who we are if it weren't for that.

______________________

There really wasn't a good legal reason for granting a stay. The woman has admitted her role in the murder. A jury found her guilty and imposed the death penalty. She had multiple appeals courts review her case. Considering that it was a planned and deliberate murder, and a brutal one (multiple stabs) of a close family member (husband and father of her kids) who should have been able to trust her, the DP seems justified.

The woman appears to have been rehabilitated in prison, appears to feel genuine remorse for what she did, and her kids have forgiven her for killing their father. All that is good, but not a valid legal reason for staying her execution. The state could have chosen to commute her sentence to life in prison for other reasons, but the Supremes are there to review issues of federal law, not the other stuff. They were correct in staying out of it.

Colonialism brought the modern world to places that would still be using stone tools, if left alone. The world owes Europe a big thanks for colonialism (though outside of the British colonies, the rest had to accept third-rate Western cultures as the colonial powers). If it weren't for British colonialism in India, making English an official language there, there'd be a billion Indians with no jobs and nothing to do. The ability to speak english has saved India in the last few decades.

But this has been the stories of empires. The Chinese never sought to build a world empire and, as a result, Chinese invention never contributed jack shit to the world. They invented movable type but no one would have ever heard about it had it not have been for the Europeans inventing it on their own hundreds of years later, utilizing it broadly and giving it to the whole world. Many of the Chinese inventions only evenutally found their way to anyone else because the Mongols took them and then conquered the world, spreading the ideas.
