Politico and the Democrats Now Politicizing Mars

Yesterday, there was a lot of #ScienceLoving over NASA's report that its satellites suggest (their word; not "prove") that there is flowing water on Mars -- not just water trapped in the caps as has long been believed, but "very briny" water flowing down its mountain peaks and leaving dark furrows as it goes.

Fun news.

Politico immediately turned it into a political matter -- a chance for liberals to self-promote "I f*cking love science so hard" -- by misleading its audience about a Rush Limbaugh riff.

Their claim:

Rush Limbaugh pans evidence of water on Mars as part of 'leftist agenda'
By ELIZA COLLINS 09/28/15 06:13 PM EDT

He said no such thing, of course. He did not posit a conspiracy, as this headline (and the tweet that promoted it) suggests.

Flowing water on Mars? That's just part of the liberal agenda, Rush Limbaugh says.

Nope! Not what he said.

The conservative radio talk show host addressed NASA’s announcement on Monday that it had found evidence of flowing water on present-day Mars, and -- spoiler alert --he doesn't believe it.

Also, not what he said.

"OK so there's flowing water on Mars. Yip yip yip yahoo. Hey, you know me, I'm science 101, big time guy, tech advance it, you know it, I'm all in. But, NASA has been corrupted by the current regime," Limbaugh said on his show, according to Media Matters. "Don't know how long it's going to take, but this news that there is flowing water on Mars is somehow going to find its way into a technique to advance the leftist agenda."

Limbaugh did not say he didn't believe the news, nor that the finding was itself part of the leftist agenda -- but that it would immediately be used to advance the leftist agenda.

As Media Matters immediately did, and then Politico did, quoting them.

I mean, Rush was totally, totally wrong, wasn't he?

Wasn't he?

17 Oh, also, what I think Rush meant (and I think he will be 100% vindicated in thinking this) is that this flowing / frozen water situation will somehow tie back in to global warming and socialism.

And i almost guarantee it. It will go something like, "Scientists now believe that high levels of Co2 caused all of the ice guys on mars to melt, and that led to...

...which is why some see such urgency in banning coal power plants"

26 This flowing water on Mars theory was advanced years ago and there were pictures on wired.com and space.com showing something you and I would call 'mud slides' during spring thaw. Whether or not it was frozen CO2 evaporating in the spring sun, or water ice, there was evidence of something that looked like a California mudslide after a fire and heavy rains. That was years ago, several years ago.

I'm about as huge an AGW skeptic as you can find, but I do wish sometimes that the socon bloc would just shut up about this stuff. There are plenty of wholly legitimate, factual and Earthly reasons to critique the "settled science" of global warming without dragging religious angles into it.

What then happens is that I start talking to people here about flawed computer models, and tinkered historical temperature records, and glaring mistakes in "pal reviewed" papers, and the response is HAW HAW HAW YOU DUMB-ASS TRAILER-TRASH MOUTH-BREATHER GO TALK TO YOUR BUMPKIN BIBLE BUDDIES LIKE INHOFE ABOUT THAT CRAP.

147 This is an AP story (i.e. not satire) ...

The Russian ambassador to Poland has sparked outrage for putting some of the blame for World War II on Poland, creating a new spat amid deepening tensions between the Slavic nations.

Russian Ambassador Sergey Andreev on Friday described the Soviet's 1939 invasion of Poland as an act of self-defense, not aggression. The comment prompted Poland's Foreign Ministry to declare Saturday that the ambassador "undermines historical truth" and seems to be trying to justify Stalinist crimes.

World War II began after Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union sealed a pact in 1939 that included a secret provision to carve up Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe. Germany soon invaded Poland from the West, followed by a Soviet invasion from the east 16 days later. Millions of Poles were killed in the war.

In an interview broadcast on the private TVN station, Andreev also said: "Polish policy led to the disaster in September 1939, because during the 1930s Poland repeatedly blocked the formation of a coalition against Hitler's Germany. Poland was therefore partly responsible for the disaster which then took place."

185 "Listen to science", huh? Jeeeezus, Hillary! is truly an idiot, and that statement proves it yet again. As was already pointed out, the theory that the "linae" (aka what looks like mudslides) on Mars may be caused by water is not new. NASA and other scientific groups have been suggesting this ever since the phenomena was first observed. They are still not sure, hence the use of the word "suggest" WRT the cause of the linae effect. We probably won't know for sure until someone goes there and looks, directly, at the relevant spots on the Martian surface.

But as for "listening" to science, I've been around long enough to have seen the countless errors "science" has made over the years. Regardless of the subject, new data comes in, someone comes up with a better explanation of this-or-that phenomena/observation/theory/whatever, and what was thought to be "settled science" last week/month/year turns out to be totally wrong, utter BS. The real trick with "science" is to keep your eyes and ears open and wait for new data to come in. Because the truth is, REAL science is very seldom "settled".

204 MATH, #128:

"And yet the IPCC totally forgot to account for [water's] effect on climate in their last dire 'global warming' report."

Are you kidding? They're absolutely counting on it!

Not even the most ardent CAGW supporter thinks that CO2 alone can account for all the warming in the late 20th century. They *need* water vapor to be a positive feedback: More CO2, more warming, puts more water vapor into the atmosphere, that water vapor causes further heating, presto.

You have questions as to whether that feedback really works as they need it to, to get the models to reproduce the steep 1979-1998 warming? Or you're wondering why temperatures have largely leveled off? (Natural variability. The deep ocean ate it. No they haven't leveled off at all.) Well, then, shut up. Which oil company is paying you anyway?

When I have a movie I'm really really excited about because the script and theme is some kind of progtard nonsense-

why then I know that movie is just going to be a huge success if I throw away all logic and really really really beat the audience over the head with said progtard talking points over and over and over again.

But, when I take on a script with a strong story and great characters but no political import for me-

why then I do my job and make sure this boring piece of claptrap is interesting to watch.

Politico: Rush Limbaugh pans evidence of water on Mars as part of 'leftist agenda' By Eliza Collins

Eliza Collins is a reporter for POLITICO. Prior to joining POLITICO Collins was a regular contributor to both USA TODAY and USA TODAY College where she wrote about a range of topics. She has interned for USA TODAY twice, on both the breaking news and video desks.

Collins graduated from University of Oregon in 2014 with a double major in Journalism and Mandarin Chinese. She worked as the digital managing editor of the college newspaper, The Emerald.

244 Confession: Despite by affinity for the show "Ancient Aliens," I don't believe there's life anywhere in the universe except that which got its start on earth.

I say "believe" because it's a negative proposition which can never be proven.

People who f-ing love science think I'm a lunatic because, as their reasoning goes, the more humans explore the universe, the more we find that it's likely that life does exist somewhere. My response is that I'll change my tune when a single extraterrestrial organism is found. Until then, I'll qualify that my belief is only a belief, as the contrary can never be disproved. Only my belief can be disproved, but until it is, I'll keep believing it.

The blank stares I get when I invoke the name of Karl Popper is priceless.

280  If everything was created at once in a big bang, why do some planets have molten cores and others are cold without atmospheres?Posted by: Boss Moss at September 29, 2015 04:56 PM (PJ0bc

Yeah, it's interesting. I imagine that some planets have more radioactive ingredients at their cores, while others had less. Distance from the sun seems to factor in, also. Though planets way, way out have auroras indicating serious levels of magnetic fields. So, long story short, I'll be damned if I know.

It's funny, Venus is like 100% volcanic, yet the AGW scoundrels call it 'runaway greenhouse' because -- well, they're lying scoundrels -- while Earth is like 3% volcanic - my guess - and teeming with life, while Mars is now 0% volcanic and dead.

I think the pressure is about equal to the Earth's at 20,000ft in the area under discussion and the temp in Martian Summer in that spot can approach 75 F.
I don't know the salinity.

374 Lets see here.

In the 1970's Walter Mondale & William Proxmire both were instrumental in curtailing Apollo, cancelling 2 missions and defunding any attempt to return to the moon. Both also came very close to killing the Space Shuttle program entirely. In 1984 Walter Mondale even said he would cut the Shuttle program severally.

In the 1980's and early 1990's, Sen. Dale Bumpers attempted to kill funding for several projects, including Hubble, Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station. When Hubble needed repairs to fix its misshapen lenses, Bumpers also tried to kill funding for that mission too.

In the 1990's, Rep. Bonior tried to get the Galileo and Cassini missions cancelled outright because of their use of plutonium isotope reactors for power. He also sponsored legislation to ban the use of such power sources, which would effectively have ended any missions to the outer planets.

The vet sent the wrong health certificate form to the USDA office in Kentucky for validation (Germany has a different one than the rest of the EU apparently), so we had to drive the correct one down there two days before we flew out to get their stamp of approval, but otherwise it was pretty smooth. Customs agent was a young woman who said, "Oooh! Kittehs!" before glancing at the stamped health form. Heh.

379 Interesting thing about finding 'life' on Mars. That "Mars Protection Bureau" or whatever is, I think, is supposed to protect Mars from contamination from Earth; bacteria on the Mars Landers and such. Those things are supposed to be sterilized just in case we do something like introduce the Smallpox virus to native americans in the New World the way the evil Europeans did.

So if we do find bacteria on Mars like bacteria on Earth then, obviously we contaminated the pristine environment of Mars with our dirty science probes.

Then there was a juicy tid bit in the news about that European asteroid lander; something about finding amino acids. Well, it's the news media for one, but it got me looking at the 'solar wind', the stream of ions 'boiling off of the sun' exactly the way water vapor (steam) escapes the pot of boiling water you are going to poach your pasta in.

Just a facile and rudimentary google search and you discover that all of the atoms needed to make amino acids are present in the solar wind. (There is water on the outside of the ISS. Possibly because of the solar wind, or perhaps fluid leaks, or thruster plumes.) Oh there was a news item about one of the Russian space walkers brought back a swap of the outside of the ISS that had plankton on it, and everyone is trying to figure out how it got there.

So all the atoms needed are there, and chemistry being what it is, carbon based amino acids can result from the stew. Amino acids lead to proteins, and the next thing you know, you have bacteria living in harsh conditions. Coupla billion years of evolution and voila, you get Al Gore.

It's science.

390 Have any reputable scientists ever said if Mars was even in the "Goldilocks zone"?

Just barely. Right on the outer edge. Actually, the surface rovers NASA has sent to Mars has found plenty of evidence for running water there in the geologic past. Only problem was it was a LONG time ago, as in hundreds of millions to billions of years ago, back when Mars had a much denser atmosphere.

And speaking of AGW, here's a little bit of Science! for you all. We have now examined all of the planets in the Solar System, but the three that have been studied the most are Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, in that order (in terms of the number of probes sent). And here is an interesting bit of data that the LSM will never tell you; these probes have noted, on all three planets a small but measurable increase in the average temperatures there. Now, last I heard there are no coal fired power plants, SUVs, or white male cisnormative Republicans living on Mars, Jupiter or Saturn. So how did these planets manage to get just a wee bit warmer? Hmm?

396 Mars may have had at some point in time a molten core and enough of an atmosphere to sustain life in an almost as warm as Earth period for a few months per year. Most likely in the first half billion to billion year period. There's some extremely limited evidence of rudimentary life on Earth in this same period. The kind of life you might find on an old toothbrush kicked under the sink.

But it's dead now, and unless we figure out how to re-volcanise its core it's nothing but a stopping point out of this solar system. Finding water there would be helpful, but we still need some serious propulsion systems for travel measured in light years.

Yeah, Hill, just as long as folks don't want to use RTGs to explore with, cuz if they do the anti-nuke environmentalists of the left will go batshit crazy about it.

You know what is going to be the greatest problem colonizing Mars?--the Left, and the Global Left. The first will try to "national park" it if there is any hint of bacteria or other life present; the second will demand Third World Countries get their cut of the action (so kleptocracies can continue to "thrive"), in a way that makes the margins impossible, and hence colonization impossible.

Exit Question, hypothetical division--if Zefram Cochrane was a reliable anti-progressive, would the Democrats think we could just go ahead and live without warp drive (or wait until a more suitable demographic invented it)?

I highly doubt there is any flowing water on Mars.

Obviously it would have to be "briny" to flow at low temperatures, meaning high in salt to depress the freezing point. How low? Pretty low. I don't think it's likely.

And hey, that's science, bitchez.

Posted by: Bossy Conservative....lost in America at September 29, 2015 06:19 PM (RFeQD)

412 "If everything was created at once in a big bang, why do some planets have molten cores and others are cold without atmospheres?"

The Universe was supposedly created with a Big Bang some 14 billion years ago, but not with "everything" in its present form.

According to theory, it took about 400 thousand years for the first atoms to appear; stars and galaxies came much, much later, after gravity gathered and compressed those atoms to the point where nuclear fusion began.

Solar systems and planets are much younger than than the galaxies they arise in. Stars have to create elements and then explode to spread their debris , which is then captured by other other stars.

The composition of the cloud of stellar debris and gas surrounding the star, as well as the distance from it, determine the composition of any planets formed.

But chance plays a part. If a large body had not collided with the Earth billions of years ago, our Moon might not exist, or be very different in terms of its composition.

Posted by: Huh? at September 29, 2015 06:24 PM (FkgZk)

413 Rush has made the same kind of mistake---predicting the Left would "use" science for political ends---before.

Some years back he reported skeptically on complaints by astronomers about "light pollution", believing the term had some sinister political overtones.

Astronomers called in to explain that the term related to the widespread urban/suburban use of sodium vapor street lamps, whose collective glow washes out starlight, ruining the visibility of faint deep space objects.

Rush wouldn't listen.

I have a telescope. I have to travel 40 miles to get a dark sky necessary for viewing galaxies, nebulae and clusters. All I can see from my suburban back yard are the planets out to Uranus, a few prominent clusters (seen in winter) and the Moon.

If you live in a big city, go out on a "clear" night and look up. You'll see almost nothing.

I remember that.

When you see those satellite photos showing all the lights on Earth at night, much of that is wasted light. If you have a porch light, you want to light your porch, not your neighbor's window or the ISS.

Really, the solution is pretty simple. There's no need to go all North Korea or anything. Just have better-designed light fixtures that direct the light where it's needed, and not off your property. Then you can use lower-wattage bulbs for the same amount of light on the target area, and save money.

Posted by: rickl at September 29, 2015 06:59 PM (sdi6R)

416 When you use the phrase "light trespass" instead of "light pollution", both the problem and the solution become clearer.

In cities and suburbs, the main culprits are the municipalities themselves, who have upgraded street lighting with sodium vapor lamps, the main source of the problem.

Try arguing to your town that their street light output is trespassing on your property.
