Politico and the Democrats Now Politicizing Mars
Yesterday, there was a lot of #ScienceLoving over NASA's report that its satellites suggest (their word; not "prove") that there is flowing water on Mars -- not just water trapped in the caps as has long been believed, but "very briny" water flowing down its mountain peaks and leaving dark furrows as it goes.
Fun news. Politico immediately turned it into a political matter -- a chance for liberals to self-promote "I f*cking love science so hard" -- by misleading its audience about a Rush Limbaugh riff. Their claim:Rush Limbaugh pans evidence of water on Mars as part of 'leftist agenda'He said no such thing, of course. He did not posit a conspiracy, as this headline (and the tweet that promoted it) suggests.

Flowing water on Mars? That's just part of the liberal agenda, Rush Limbaugh says.
The conservative radio talk show host addressed NASA’s announcement on Monday that it had found evidence of flowing water on present-day Mars, and -- spoiler alert --he doesn't believe it.Also, not what he said.
"OK so there's flowing water on Mars. Yip yip yip yahoo. Hey, you know me, I'm science 101, big time guy, tech advance it, you know it, I'm all in. But, NASA has been corrupted by the current regime," Limbaugh said on his show, according to Media Matters. "Don't know how long it's going to take, but this news that there is flowing water on Mars is somehow going to find its way into a technique to advance the leftist agenda."Limbaugh did not say he didn't believe the news, nor that the finding was itself part of the leftist agenda -- but that it would immediately be used to advance the leftist agenda. As Media Matters immediately did, and then Politico did, quoting them. I mean, Rush was totally, totally wrong, wasn't he? Wasn't he?

Not entirely true. Rare earth minerals aren't rare in space. Asteroids contain many valuable and rare metals. The moon has helium 3 as well as minerals found here. Its just not economically feasible to harvest these resources. Yet. But that is the catch 22, you have to build better equipment before the cost comes down.

Nah, it was GWB who made to call to shut down the shuttle program. And while I'm no Elon fanboi (you want to see what they look like, go to "The Space Review"; that bunch sucks Elon's crank all day every day), the fact is he'd been working on building his own rockets for quite a few years before the Choom King came along (made quite a few BFRCs over Kwajelein island before he got most of the kinks worked out, too). The problem is they should have kept the shuttle going, at least to a limited extent, until they had something to replace it with, whether it was SpaceX, Boeing, SNC, Orbital or whomever. Anybody but the fucking Russians.

Yeah, it's interesting. I imagine that some planets have more radioactive ingredients at their cores, while others had less. Distance from the sun seems to factor in, also. Though planets way, way out have auroras indicating serious levels of magnetic fields. So, long story short, I'll be damned if I know.
It's funny, Venus is like 100% volcanic, yet the AGW scoundrels call it 'runaway greenhouse' because -- well, they're lying scoundrels -- while Earth is like 3% volcanic - my guess - and teeming with life, while Mars is now 0% volcanic and dead.

I think it's behind us. But really the whole extraterrestrial life argument changes completely if we find just one bug on one rock. There are a lot of reputable people that can argue convincingly that there may be several sites within our own solar system that harbor some form of life going by the old definition, self-replicating, passing on genetic info, etc.
Not to mention the odds makers in England have been dropping the odds for no life for years. Get your bets in now. It's just my opinion really.

In the 1970's Walter Mondale & William Proxmire both were instrumental in curtailing Apollo, cancelling 2 missions and defunding any attempt to return to the moon. Both also came very close to killing the Space Shuttle program entirely. In 1984 Walter Mondale even said he would cut the Shuttle program severally.
In the 1980's and early 1990's, Sen. Dale Bumpers attempted to kill funding for several projects, including Hubble, Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station. When Hubble needed repairs to fix its misshapen lenses, Bumpers also tried to kill funding for that mission too.
In the 1990's, Rep. Bonior tried to get the Galileo and Cassini missions cancelled outright because of their use of plutonium isotope reactors for power. He also sponsored legislation to ban the use of such power sources, which would effectively have ended any missions to the outer planets.

Fun fact: Down in the footnotes of the Mars Mud story, turns out NASA has Planetary Protection rules in place the prevent sending landers to areas that might be habitable enough for earth life tagalongs to survive. Cause contaminating Gaia -- er -- Ares and making Martian Indians cry.

O/T HR, did you have any problems getting your kittehs to Germany?
The vet sent the wrong health certificate form to the USDA office in Kentucky for validation (Germany has a different one than the rest of the EU apparently), so we had to drive the correct one down there two days before we flew out to get their stamp of approval, but otherwise it was pretty smooth. So if we do find bacteria on Mars like bacteria on Earth then, obviously we contaminated the pristine environment of Mars with our dirty science probes.
Then there was a juicy tid bit in the news about that European asteroid lander; something about finding amino acids. Well, it's the news media for one, but it got me looking at the 'solar wind', the stream of ions 'boiling off of the sun' exactly the way water vapor (steam) escapes the pot of boiling water you are going to poach your pasta in.
Just a facile and rudimentary google search and you discover that all of the atoms needed to make amino acids are present in the solar wind. (There is water on the outside of the ISS. Possibly because of the solar wind, or perhaps fluid leaks, or thruster plumes.) Oh there was a news item about one of the Russian space walkers brought back a swap of the outside of the ISS that had plankton on it, and everyone is trying to figure out how it got there.
So all the atoms needed are there, and chemistry being what it is, carbon based amino acids can result from the stew. Amino acids lead to proteins, and the next thing you know, you have bacteria living in harsh conditions. Coupla billion years of evolution and voila, you get Al Gore.
It's science.

Just barely. Right on the outer edge. Actually, the surface rovers NASA has sent to Mars has found plenty of evidence for running water there in the geologic past. Only problem was it was a LONG time ago, as in hundreds of millions to billions of years ago, back when Mars had a much denser atmosphere.
And speaking of AGW, here's a little bit of Science! for you all. We have now examined all of the planets in the Solar System, but the three that have been studied the most are Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, in that order (in terms of the number of probes sent). And here is an interesting bit of data that the LSM will never tell you; these probes have noted, on all three planets a small but measurable increase in the average temperatures there. Now, last I heard there are no coal fired power plants, SUVs, or white male cisnormative Republicans living on Mars, Jupiter or Saturn. So how did these planets manage to get just a wee bit warmer? Hmm?

But it's dead now, and unless we figure out how to re-volcanise its core it's nothing but a stopping point out of this solar system. Finding water there would be helpful, but we still need some serious propulsion systems for travel measured in light years.

He didn't try to kill the program, just delay it while they tried to figure out what went wrong. I can understand that. But he did make sure a replacement shuttle was built, which was (once again) over the objections of a number of Dems (Bumpers again, I think. Would have to look it up).

You know what is going to be the greatest problem colonizing Mars?--the Left, and the Global Left. The first will try to "national park" it if there is any hint of bacteria or other life present; the second will demand Third World Countries get their cut of the action (so kleptocracies can continue to "thrive"), in a way that makes the margins impossible, and hence colonization impossible.
Exit Question, hypothetical division--if Zefram Cochrane was a reliable anti-progressive, would the Democrats think we could just go ahead and live without warp drive (or wait until a more suitable demographic invented it)?

I highly doubt there is any flowing water on Mars.
Obviously it would have to be "briny" to flow at low temperatures, meaning high in salt to depress the freezing point. How low? Pretty low. I don't think it's likely.

The Universe was supposedly created with a Big Bang some 14 billion years ago, but not with "everything" in its present form.
According to theory, it took about 400 thousand years for the first atoms to appear; stars and galaxies came much, much later, after gravity gathered and compressed those atoms to the point where nuclear fusion began.
Solar systems and planets are much younger than than the galaxies they arise in. Stars have to create elements and then explode to spread their debris , which is then captured by other other stars.
The composition of the cloud of stellar debris and gas surrounding the star, as well as the distance from it, determine the composition of any planets formed.
But chance plays a part. If a large body had not collided with the Earth billions of years ago, our Moon might not exist, or be very different in terms of its composition.

I have a telescope. I have to travel 40 miles to get a dark sky necessary for viewing galaxies, nebulae and clusters. All I can see from my suburban back yard are the planets out to Uranus, a few prominent clusters (seen in winter) and the Moon.
If you live in a big city, go out on a "clear" night and look up. You'll see almost nothing.

I remember that.
When you see those satellite photos showing all the lights on Earth at night, much of that is wasted light. If you have a porch light, you want to light your porch, not your neighbor's window or the ISS.
Really, the solution is pretty simple. There's no need to go all North Korea or anything. Just have better-designed light fixtures that direct the light where it's needed, and not off your property. Then you can use lower-wattage bulbs for the same amount of light on the target area, and save money.

In cities and suburbs, the main culprits are the municipalities themselves, who have upgraded street lighting with sodium vapor lamps, the main source of the problem.
Try arguing to your town that their street light output is trespassing on your property.
