Failure Theater: Boehner Says Why Sure I'll Consider Raising the Debt Limit on the Way Out the Door, Clearing the Decks for My Very Conservative Friend Kevin McCarthy

We just wrapped the Jindal podcast, so for a quickie, how about that Hot Air button?

The idea is that Boehner will pass a host of unpopular measures, with support from the Democrats, which Kevin McCarthy can then pretend he objects to, while of course supporting Boehner's actions all along.

I find Erickson's charges to be paranoid. Why, that sure doesn't sound like the GOP Establishment I know.

22 The official debt total maintained by Treasury has been frozen at $18.15T for many months now, because of the debt ceiling. Which was hit for all practical purposes back in the first quarter of 2015. Jack Lew has been engaged in a slew of dubiously legal maneuvers to put off the day of reckoning.

I suggested on the ONT last night that we start a betting pool on the size of the abrupt uptick once all of that pent-up deficit spending actually starts to show up and be properly accounted for in the debt figures. Once the dust settles, the total is going to be closer to $19T than $18T.

As noted by myself and others before, just what will the "rebels" in the House caucus do about a new Speaker?

Why push Boehner out, only to replace with McCarthy (or anyone like him)? Makes little apparent sense.

No better time to have a fight than now. With big action certain to happen in the next few weeks, why wait?

Give a battlefield commission to the new leadership based on their conduct in the fight *right now* - don't choose it through the conventional and far less reliable methods of horse-trading and political resumes.

Everyone got the story about Beohner resigning WRONG.

Beohner wasn't forced out by House Conservatives. Boehner is leaving because he is fed up with House Conservatives. What Boehner is doing is the ol' classic Fuck me? No, fuck you gambit.

Boehner got sick of the Conservatives in the House and in the country. So Boehner is quitting. He ALREADY set up his replacement. It is a Done Deal.

NOT A SINGLE GODDAMNED PENNY of "infrastructure" spending until we get a proper accounting of why the enormous 2009 Obama porkulus bill -- the size of Eisenhower's interstate highway program and Kennedy's Apollo program *combined* -- produced no measurable improvement at all in the state of America's infrastructure.

There is no interregnum when change-over in the Speaker's post occurs, I believe. Selection of the new Speaker coincides with replacement of the old one. So there shouldn't be any constitutional concerns on that score.

There's no apparent reason to wait until November, or passage of the big bills.

Why not find out who's where - without question - now? And choose based on that?

One major problem: not a group of people exatly over-flowing with talent and leadership potential. Very "representative" of the country, sadly. Second major problem: a fairly small minority is serious, and responsible (the guys forcing Boehner out). The caucus as a whole is exactly what you'd expect of a group that has presided over and even participated in the practical crippling and constitutional evisceration of the country you've all been watching for several years.

Posted by: Buzzion at September 29, 2015 05:58 PM (z/Ubi)

68 Anyone dumb enough to think McCarthy is more conservative than Boehner really shouldn't be out on their own. But that's the rule for this "insurgency," isn't it: do the stupid and irrational thing first, think later.

No one who could possibly win the Speaker's chair or the Senate Majority Leader spot will shut down the government for nothing at all but a symbolic protest, and that's what the LIVs on our side demand. It's their only solution to every problem. One trick ponies.

The reality is we can't force Obama to do anything at all because he doesn't give a rat's rear end about the country, and enough Democrats will back his play to sustain his veto if we did pass something. So it always boils down to shutting down the government, which now even a clear majority of Republican voters opposes, so no sane leader will do it.

Adjoran's analysis, as always, is impeccable, and reflects his long years of experience on the Hill and as an observer of the US govt. He has concisely explained why there have never been vetoes of bills in US history, and also why Congress has no role in the appropriations process (other than to comply with WH wishes, lest a shut-down cause political catastrophe for the opposition party, as it invariably has).

Also implied is the key insight that the only fights worth fighting are ones that are won easily, and that losing efforts can play no role in shaping the political landscape, motivating and organizing your base of supporters, and placing vulnerable opponents in jeopardy for the election cycle by creating potential new negatives for them.

It's really all right there. Kind of a civics course in a few paragraphs.

Having effectively ceded almost all of their constitutional power ($$$$) without so much as a raised voice, much less a fight, by failing to get regular order in appropriations or (easily) force the "shut-down" sign onto the Senate Dems, the GOP Congress can hardly be expected to use the debt limit to get anything done. I've been listening to Special Report tonight and it is essentially a compilation of everything that Obama has done in his presidency and how badly it has failed:
-Health coop in NY that was given $300 million tax dollars - fails
-Every freaking foreign policy decision that Obama has taken has been a monumental disaster putting the world at risk - ISIS growing astronomically (unprecedented is what it is called), Taliban takes over a city in A-stan while WE ARE STILL THERE. Russia takes over Syria right under our noses and now we are saying how great that is!

Six years is all it has taken for Obama to cause this much damage not only to the country, but to the world.

188 Yeah, makes sense. Weeper Boner said "end of Oct.", and that's when the accounting tricks on the debt limit look like they'll run out.

The G-fund is down to zero (well, $50ishM) and the civil service retirement trust fund (this is the old grandfathered plan) is down around $200B (they can't completely wipe all of this out, only some. They can completely wipe out the G fund).

Don't worry if you (think) you have any "money" in those funds. You had special issue nonmarketable Ts, now you have IOUs for 'em. IOUs for IOUs, or IOU^2 (squared).

I've been saying that for a few months now.
Maybe we never really were Republicans. I have a feeling that a lot of you were Reagan Democrats like my parents. You followed common sense across the aisle when it abandoned the old party, but it never took root in the new one. The Republican Party never wanted Reagan, and aside from a rare few, it's been trying to undermine his legacy ever since.
We can't ever be Democrats again and shackling ourselves to the suicidal, politically irrelevant Republican party is proving to be a road to failure. But you can win a 3-way race with as little as 34% of the vote, and we've got 25% practically baked into the cake, with a large number of sympathizers. If the Republic's a little more robust than we thought and doesn't collapse after this cycle, we should really think long and hard about it.

Just read an interview of Juan Pablo Raba, the actor who played Escobar's cousin in Narcos. He's Colombian and his uncle and cousin were killed on the Avianca flight. To me that role wd be difficult but he did an excellent job.

Would a Jew play Hitler or one of his many henchmen? I think it would be sort of an inside joke but it would still get to me, so if I were Jewish, no, I couldnt do it.

271 If this link will post, here's the latest Monthly Treasury Statement:
https://www.fiscal.treasury.gov/fsreports/rpt/mthTreasStmt/mts0815.pdf

All the information to figure out the accounting tricks and figure how much is being hidden by the end of August is in there. Now, find it.

All of you need to learn Uncle Sugar's financial accounting. If any private company or business did this, they'd be under the jail now.

275 What is the only currently commissioned Navy Ship to actually sink an enemy ship in action?

Well give me a hint. Is she solar powered, and does she have a Java wheel?

279 265:

"I've been saying that for a few months now.
If the Republic's a little more robust than we thought and doesn't collapse after this cycle, we should really think long and hard about it."

Spot on analysis, with one quibble: that 25 percent probably will bolt this time if somehow Rubio survives (Jeb, Kasich and Christie already are dead). I don't see that oily little maggot Marco making it that far, though.

280 And Kevin McCarthy is an acceptable replacement because why again? Is it the Boehner endorsement?

Yeah, pretty sure the GOP is still Dead Party Walking. I'm not even sure it's walking anymore.

It is kind of relaxing to not give a ckuf about the parties anymore, however. Perhaps a Benevolent Kingdom will chance upon us after SMOD.
