Marco Rubio: I Have A Plan To Further Another Long Held Democratic Dream.

Not content with helping in usher permanent liberal majorities through mass amnesty, Marco Rubio has a proposal to advance the ball on paid family leave.

"Our policies should help workers, not cost them their jobs," the Florida senator will say, according to excerpts provided by his campaign. "I believe we can fix this problem by creatively applying our free enterprise principles in a way that encourages businesses to choose to offer more paid family leave."

...

"They say the only way to solve this problem is to raise taxes, grow government, and place crippling requirements on private companies," Rubio will say, per his prepared remarks, referencing Obamacare. "I believe we can fix this problem by creatively applying our free enterprise principles in a way that encourages businesses to choose to offer more paid family leave."

And what's the "free enterprise" solution to this problem that's none of the government's business? Why another tax credit of course. Companies will get a credit for 25% of the wages they spend on an employee up to $4,000 over 12 weeks.

The left is naturally embracing this compromise position. No wait. They are doing what they always do...say it's not enough.

This is how government grows. Liberals identify a problem that the government "must do something about". Conservatives point out that it's not the government's place to do this. Then Team GOP moderates come in with a big-government "conservative" idea. Democrats claim the moderate GOP idea is cheap and propose something even bigger and something between the leftwing dream and Team GOP's idea is adopted. And then it grows. And grows. And grows. And then the leftwing dream is realized.

The reality is the Team GOP types will ALWAYS be outbid by the left. There's no margin for small government conservatives in playing this game.

But hey, Rubio gives lovely speeches. So go with that.

39 This is why we need a massively simplified tax code.

I'm tired of using the tax code as a way to control the populace (and yes businesses included there, "businesses are people, my friends.")

I still find it ironic that President Obama is busy chastising businesses for not offering paid maternity leave, when the government itself only offers you the ability to use your sick and vacation time (which is pretty much what most other places offer: store up your time.)

I get it, it's hard for hourly workers to make things work re: maternity leave. Life, sadly, is full of trade offs.

61 I believe we can fix this problem

What problem?

by creatively applying our free enterprise principles in a way that encourages businesses to choose to offer more paid family leave.

Huh?

So ... we've moved from maternity leave (where the business is forced to give the mother time off and hold her job in case she decides to come back) to "family leave". Those pregnant fathers certainly need to be able to tie businesses up, too. Otherwise, they would feel all left out.

I think Rubio needs to get a family leave of this nation. He should go back to Cuba or, better yet, he could deport himself to Mexico to be with the constituency that he serves.

What used to be "benefits" is becoming mandatory compensation, pretty much undercutting any desire for self-improvement.

I said it before and I'll say it again: flipping burgers was only marginally worse than cutting open mice all day. If the compensation packages begin to equalize due to crazed government intervention, what's the value in me taking the educated job (which often required staying late or coming in early as opposed to working a set shift.) Plus I have the value of not having any real responsibility (as opposed for being on the hook if the $1.2 million experiment failed.)

The real benefit to the education was the increased compensation package (i.e. benefits, because my wage was shit.) But those are being mandated everywhere now. (if you have a pure desk job YMMV.)

This is what happened in the UK with doctors. A doctor in the UK makes just a bit more than someone working in a factory. So people stopped going to medical school. The result is now every doctor is from Pakistan or India.

104 The worst part is that paid family leave doesn't actually improve anything. Women still leave the job market to raise their children, because that's what they'd rather do than work and send the kids to day care. Can the woman collect money from the homo pretend couple to have a kid for them and her company be forced to give her paid leave for the pregnancy, at the same time? If the homo couple splits while the contracted mother is giving birth do any of their companies' forced paid leaves go away?

This is all very confusing. I'm sure Boobio will explain how creatively the free market principles will have to be ass-raped in order to hash this all out.

126 Right because family paid leave is such an issue. Businesses for the most part will already bend over backwards for employees with families. Single people without families will work extra to cover when there is some family event. And so will the people with families too, so they can have it paid back to them. Yeah, maybe you won't get paid because you're off watching little Jimmy's play but if the money was more important than watching your kid then you would be working and not watching your kid.

130 So ... we've moved from maternity leave (where the business is forced to give the mother time off and hold her job in case she decides to come back) to "family leave". Those pregnant fathers certainly need to be able to tie businesses up, too. Otherwise, they would feel all left out.

I took three weeks off work to help out with my newborn son. It wasn't because I felt left out. It wasn't because I wanted to tie up my employer. It was because a newborn is a lot of work and I needed to help my wife who wasn't getting any sleep.

I used two weeks of vacation time, and only one week of "paternity leave".

Do I think the gov't should be involved? Hell no. Do I think the idea of paternity leave is crazypants? Hell no.

While we're taking about the primary undercard:

Sen. Rand Paul on Monday declined to say whether he still supports fellow Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell as Senate majority leader. During an appearance on Fox News Americas Newsroom, Paul was asked if he supported McConnell.

Paul said only that conservatives are not happy and want leaders with the guts to stand up on major issues.

Fox host Bill Hemmer pressed Paul on his original question: Again, Mitch McConnell do you support him or not?

There isnt really a battle or an election going on. Or any other choices. There arent, Paul responded. There is no other choice in the Senate [for leadership].

Asked again whether he supported McConnell for now, Paul said, There is no election. There is no battle going on.

So, we're going to take that as a yes.

It's a full year at 60% pay, split between mother or father as they see fit.

It's paid for by the Canadian government specifically to grow the population. They wanted to entice more people to have kids, so they subsidize a year long furlough when you have one.

This, and the supporting evidence that DrewM lists, should be all one needs to see that the Republic is dead. Rubio doesn't feel any need whatsoever, during a republican primary, where one ought to be running to the right, to even pay the idea lipservice. He is not worried about costing himself conservative votes. He is trying to appeal to the middle and to liberalism.

Either the Establishment is stupidly moving on with their same old approach of ignoring conservatives and they are in for a very rude awakening, or they are right and conservatives are so weak politically they are right to be ignored. I believe it is the latter, but I hope it is the former.

Fair enough - it was a mommy mag, not hard news.

The point is that government money spent one one thing --- in this case financially supporting a mommy for 1 year -- means that money won't be spent on other things, in this case, treating certain birth defects (where there are standard, successful treatments available).

You get 100% of salary for 15 weeks. Then you can get EI benefits (which cap out at $524/week) for the rest of the year.

So depending on salary, it could be up to 60%, but for high income earners it will be much less than 60% if someone takes the full year off.

And again, I'm not saying I support this. Even 15 weeks is fucking insane. But I'm pointing out that women in Canada don't just go off for a year with full pay, like many seem to think.

________

Just had a similar conversation with son living in Madison, WI. My premise was that POTUS requires 'no win' decisions and I would be more comfortable with someone with a clear moral sense making those decisions. (I am including secular people in moral decisions.) Similar to parenting decisions -- most are 'no win' and can only be made in the context of what you can live with.

Cruz is my choice, but youngest kid makes a good argument that Carson has the experience with 'no win' decisions as well.

Posted by: Monsieur Mew Mew at September 28, 2015 12:47 PM (0LHZx)

No, it's this 30M online meme that is utter bullshit, which is not based on anything scientific, it's completely made up out of thin air (it's also bullshit that the Census Bureau's 11M estimate hasn't changed in 25 years: At the time of Reagan's 1986 amnesty the illegal population was estimated to be about 4 million, and it didn't exceed 10 million until less than a decade ago).

It's weird that so many pro-enforcement message board posters keep pushing this myth, because it actually undermines the cause: Obviously, the more illegals there are, the more difficult and expensive it will be to shrink that population, and therefore the more likely it is that the public will support amnesty instead. Also, by exaggerating the size of the illegal population, you are taking attention away from the real existential threat to conservative government: Excessive legal immigration. Every year we are handing out green cards to 1.2 million new legal immigratnts, who vote 80-20 Democrat.

We should force Republicans to listen to Mark Levin, that might get the idea in their tiny useless brains.

They only care about the parties, etc they're invited to.

Rand Paul won't say anything about McConnrll because he needed him to help KY change to a caucus so Rand could run for president & senate in same year. If Rand thought his chances were so great, he should've given up senate seat.

Not really. There are so many easy and free solutions to the problem that it's simple. We have listed them many times. A tax on remittances and asset forfeture might pay for the program entire.

274 Trying to remember where I saw it, I want to say FOX, but some roundtable of conservative pundits were talking about a winning ticket and one said Jeb!/Kasich and someone rebutted with Rubio/Kasich. Either way the GOP picks up Florida and Ohio. Consensus was Rubio/Kasich would please conservatives. Both are solidly conservative and Rubio is young, energetic and good looking.

All I could think was nope, nope and we're back to liking creases in pants.

278 So Dems come up with phony baloney problems with government "solutions" and Repubs are always ready to meet them halfway.

So that means things are always moving towards the Dem policy goals.

Posted by: Make America Great Again at September 28, 2015 01:30 PM (LXJ1e)

279 CS Lewis once pointed out that people often talked abou the 'sum total of human misery' fallaciously, since misery as such is idempotent: ie. the maximum amount of misery a single individual can experience should be what determines how convincing you find the problem of evil.

I'd like to propose a similar criteria for immigration. If a single Syrian or Dominican emailed you that that they felt things were getting tough, so they demanded the right to move into your house so they could raid your icebox, steal your silverware, defecate on your rug and endanger your family and berate you for being a privileged racist - wouldn't you say, I have no such moral obligation. Eff off.

But immigration is just this situation replicated. But replicating a situation does not change what the morally appropriate response to it is.

285 A company I worked for decided to implement pfl and it turned out exactly the way all of the hard working sane people agreed it would.

Out of a 9 person office, at any one time, there were no more than 6 people (I was one of the 5 who never needed pfl) actually working.

We all agreed L would milk it into retirement. She always had one family crisis or another that only she, strong matron that she was, could resolve. Always late, took Monday and Friday off for months at a time anyway (OH! The tales of woe and strife were epic and complete bullshit), we never missed her. She made more money than me.

Then there was J. J and L worked together. In fact L helped J get his job. J was L's protege, spy, accomplice and all purpose bitch boi. When he took pfl everyone else had to take on his job duties for 2 months.

S did basically nothing all day. Her job description could be boiled down to: order pizza, screen calls for the Manager, fomenting plots against people she didn't like and (her actual job) hit the return button to submit the quarterly P/L statement. She got pregnant and parlayed pfl into a permanent home officing. She made more money than me.

E's wife was in a bad car wreck and pfl helped him to care for her and their kids. But he got bored and asked the Manager to let him help with J's work.

The takeaway is that all pfl did was create deep resentment and demoralization among the people who were left.

We all knew L and J well enough to accurately predict their actions and the idea that they were being well paid to scam the company for work we did was infuriating.

293 This underscores the reason we have an insurgent like Trump. The GOP establishment is not conservative and it does not exist to better the lives of middle class Americans. It is entirely beholden to the whims of its wealthy donors.
