Thoughts on Boehner's Resignation

1. The Consensus Media, which is an agreement of left and right pundits who don't know much, had been pretty sure that Boehner's job was safe. No one should listen to them.

They assume, in advance, that everything is in stasis. No one in politics should assume things are in stasis. Politics is about change. If you don't believe change is possible, you're not an advocate for politics; you're simply a guy taking a check, discussing which other guys should get checks.

I know one thing about change: Change is not possible unless you first believe change is possible and work to bring about change. Note that believing in change and working for it is not sufficient to bring about change; it is, however, necessary. (A requires B, but B is not sufficient to bring about B. But do focus on the "A requires B" part.)

2. There are some claims that Boehner did this to "spare the party" the trauma of booting him out of office. I don't believe that. I think the Freedom Caucus had the votes to book him out of office -- unless Democrats voted to support Boehner, which they would do. And then we would have a true political problem on our hands, an allegedly "Republican" speaker of the House owing his job entirely to Nancy Pelosi telling X number of Democrats to vote for Boehner.

A Speaker owing his position to the opposite party? Completely compromised -- more so than he is now.

3. The current idea, favored by the same folks who thought that Boehner was such an Indispensable Man are now agitating to put his loyal (???) lieutenant Kevin McCarthy into the position. Kevin McCarthy is, if it's possible, a worse RINO than Boehner, and was by Boehner's side as he punished critics and dissidents for daring to represent their constituents' interests.

Mark Levin just described Kevin McCarthy as "just as bad as Eric Cantor and ten IQ points dumber."

Under no circumstances should the Freedom Caucus permit McCarthy, Scalise, or Cathy McMorris Rogers -- all the Boehner Warriors who have brought GOP morale to all-time lows -- to serve in any leadership position. A purge is a purge. To permit any of this crew to profit from their disasters would show the GOP to be what many of us strongly suspect it is -- basically, the Teachers Union for RINOs, an organization devoted to protecting its members jobs and not to serving its alleged constituents.

4. And on that point, note that if McCarthy, Scalise, and McMorris Rogers merely advance one step each in the leadership, then the only person to have paid any price here is Boehner; the rest of them will actually benefit from the Freedom Caucus forcing them out.

They should not benefit. We keep saying, of Obama, that failure ought to have consequences; how can this team be characterized as anything other than complete failures?

Are we rewarding Republican failures while claiming Obama should be held accountable for his own?

How does that work?

In terms that may appeal to Jonah Goldberg, nothing is helped in the Star Trek Mirror, Mirror universe by simply assassinating one evil opposite of the Star Trek crew and letting his evil subordinate take his evil position.

The only way to change the Empire of Planets is to go outside the corrupt chain of command and bring in a change agent previously not considered for the captain's chair -- Not Quite So Evil Evil Spock, in the case of Mirror, Mirror.

We should be looking for Not Quite So Evil Evil Spock, not a deranged, sword-slinging Sulu to move from Chief Navigator to Captain.

5. Political movements have many things in common with religious movements, and I don't mean the dumb claim that the GOP is owned and operated by the Christian Right. (Were that the case, Boehner and his cronies would not have been permitted to fail for so long.)

One of the things that political movements offer its adherents, similar to religious movements, is hope.

The fecklessness, failures, and flat-out betrayals of the current GOP leadership has destroyed all hope in the GOP. And a political movement without hope is not a political movement at all; it is simply an advocacy organization for getting a very small number of people cush jobs in the federal government.

If there is to be any hope permitted to the rank and file of the Republican Party, then we need big changes that permit us the illusion and fantasy of hope, without which we are nothing at all, just dejected former Republican voters.

Hope requires a change -- Kevin McCarthy, Steve Scalise, and Cathy McMorris-Rogers are no change at all; they are simply John Boehner's less accomplished inferior employees.

6. For these reasons, the Freedom Caucus must stick to its principles and announce they will not vote for, and will not permit, any of the old guard to remain in any level of power, and will simply continue voting down any Representatives who are not at least outsiders who have not yet proven themselves to be failures and sell-outs.

Otherwise, what is the point?

I find it increasingly difficult to write about politics now, you may have noticed; it's because I can no longer even pretend to care which asshole is in which federal sinecure.

I think many people feel the way I do.

And if you want to entice the alienated back into the fold, you have to at least let us dream of the possibility of actual change.

That requires allowing us hope -- and not simply doubling-down on the current crop of failures and fainthearts we are obligated, sourly, to call our "leadership."

Hope is a silly illusion, but it is a necessary, sustaining silly illusion.

Faint heart never won fair lady, fellas. Nor have fainthearts ever contributed anything to society, except cowardice and inertia.

27 "... -- unless Democrats voted to support Boehner, which they would do. And then we would have a true political problem on our hands..."

I was surprised in my youth to discover it wasn't a simple matter of the majority party voting for a Speaker; the party on the outs also get to vote. Perhaps that needs to change.

That being said, if a Speaker were opposed by his own party and approved of by the ones across the aisle -- well, shouldn't that be sort of telling?

52 The PA Legislature, for the PA politicos watching it the last few years know - experienced the same spasms the D.C. GOP is going through.

Have a GOP Speaker siding with the Dem minority because they colluded to elect him? Meet Speaker Dennis O'Brien (R-Phila) 2007-2008

Conservative rebellion overthrows leadership? Just happened in 2014 on the Senate side. The House also elected a record GOP majority.

This happened while PA was throwing an incumbent governor out of office for the first time ever. Republican Corbett lost big to liberal Dem Tom Wolf. Who as a businessman, so would be different from the tax and spend liberal Dems.

To prove his point, he proposed a budget with the largest tax increase and spending increase in PA history. The new GOP rejected it. And they've been fighting since the fiscal ended without a new budget June 30.

It's a good battle going on in Harrisburg.

ace, truly outstanding. You framed the issue perfectly, and provided the simple and exact approach the "dissidents" should take: insist on only, or at least mostly, serious players and not time-servers replace the current leadership.

A similar approach that may be reasonable is to set out a very concrete and inflexible set of requirements for any horse-trading on leadership: 3 or 4 key things that simply WILL be done in the next Congress (regular order in appropriations or no $$$, announced up front and a govt. "shut-down" specified as the result of failure and the ruthless excoriation of any Dem or Rep who prevents success in this matter; full-court press on direct or hostage appropriations moves directed at the lawlessness in the IRS, immigration enforcement, and the entirety of the ACA).

74 It is hard to care, or support any of them.

However, I considered supporting Trump for President, I seriously did, until that last debate. Then seeing him on stage, he looked very small and petty.

Also, his attack on Bush made me think about the build up to the Iraq war. They convinced me that nothing could be worse in the Middle East than the status quo... meaning Sadam and the rest of the leaders who are now mostly gone.

I bought that, that whatever happened it could not get worse, why not give it a try... let's topple all those creeps right?

Only that didn't turn out that well. I'm not sure at all that the world wasn't better off with the creeps in their spots abusing their people with ease.

And that made me realize that the call by the "conservatives" or what ever they call themselves these days.... to overturn the status quo is exactly the same.

They tell me nothing can be worse than Boehner/McConnell.... but is that right? Nothing could be worse? I think maybe it can get worse.

I think electing Donald thinking that we have nothing to lose is wrong. It think Donald could mess things up so bad... make us really and truly worse off than Obama has done, because he has no guiding star. He has no morals.

And therefore, I don't trust the people who will tear down the GOP. They don't know what the consequences are going to be and they might be far worse than the status quo.

DON'T TELL ME THINGS CAN'T BE WORSE! Tell me exactly how things will be better!!!!!

I've learned my lesson.

Not that it will matter. The know it alls, who don't know what they don't know seem to be in charge.

And here we go another stupid thing like going into Iraq, and having no idea what the end game looks like.

80 Boehner will not leave gracefully. He has to flip the finger to the base one last time. He has to sell out to the Dems one last time. RINO's are like roaches, are like Dems, you think you're done with them and there's always another problem.

Well, this is inspiring. Per wiki, Kevin McCarthy has never had an actual job. He went from Grad school, to the GOP Boehner-jungen, then staff, then ran for office in a rotten borough.

Let me put a fine point on it:

If you find yourself today hoping for someone better than Boehner to come along, how can I put this gently, you're a dope.

Stop putting faith into any politician belonging to the Republican party. If you want change, make change happen.

It's time to start a new party.

96 Good analysis, Ace.

What a surprise. All Bret Baier could do was talk about how big it was to everyone in DC. When he had some dude on who's filling in for Tammy Faye Boehner at some function tonight, all he did was spout the same party bullshit.

I want to grab the GOPe by the scruff of the neck and shake them until they're seeing double. Then read them the riot act while they're regaining their senses: "Stop fucking around and get serious about the problems those damn prog/coms have caused. Seal the damn border, stop Planned Infanticide and balance the fucking budget. And whatever TFG wants, tell him NO in no uncertain terms."

That's very very highly unlikely to ever happen as a real-world happeneing, ie shutting every one of Boehners Lt's out of the upward chain-moving, otherwise whats the point of having command linked by a chain of subordination in the first place?

The sacrifice of Boehner and one of his consigliere ought to suffice, with a verifiably new crop of made guys coming up.

But you cant whack the whole crew or there won't be any good earners left, and you cant just leave it go at taking out the boss by himself.

175 I read the whole thing a bit differently...

Boehner was going to cave to the Obama admin on the Budget, because he would not even threaten to use the nuclear option of a Government shutdown... even though many in his own party are quite willing to use it.

When he caved, and used Dem votes to pass the budget, and to once more suspend the Budget Cap.... he was going to loss his job... the base would demand it after so many failures...

By proactively 'retiring'.... he can cave.... BUT PAY NO PRICE THAT HE DID NOT SET HIMSELF.

Its Kabuki theatre to save his Honor, and Name.... by going out on his own terms, vice being thrown out....

This is why it was such a QUICK decision... literally overnight.

But this next month will be him helping the Obama admin get many of its goals done, and setting deals which will destroy any chance of reform for the next year.... ie prior to the election.

For example, let's cut immigration tohelp poor, disadvantaged (black) Americans get jobs. Say couple immigration cuts and enforcement to job training for the long-term unemployed.

How about acknowledging that climate change is real, and beyond dispute. Then using that as justification to cut all federal spending on climate change studies, conferences, treaties, etc. Why study what we KNOW is true? Take the money and devote it to constructing nuclear power plants to cut real carbon emissions.

The thing that is truly pathetic is that the establishment hacks were using "but the house has such good bills brought up that never go farther because of Harry Reid in the senate. So you must give the Republicans control of the Senate so they can actually force democrats hands on it and make Obama veto it!"

Of course as soon as they did get control of the Senate most of those bills out of the House stopped. And the cries have turned to "You can't do that the Democrats in the Senate will just filibuster it or Obama will veto it!"

Pathetic.

226 Ace sez:

"I know one thing about change: Change is not possible unless you first believe change is possible and work to bring about change."

Ace, I think you're confusing internal personal change with external political change.

Sure, maybe you can't kick drugs or become a better person if you don't first as a prerequisite believe in yourself and believe you can change.

But belief in change is not required for political change. Just ask King Louis XVI or Czar Nicholas II -- they were positive nothing could ever change, right up until the moment they were killed and the entire society was convulsed with revolutionary change.

And sometimes things change in your favor politically even when you think it's impossible and have lost all hope and belief.

I, among many people, thought that America was ruined as a nation after the election of Nov. 2008, and nothing could ever fix it. And suddenly, organically, even though no one believed it possible, an unspoken alignment of a zillion people who felt just like me (and you) coalesced to form a mass movement that was given the name "Tea Party" and at the very next election CHANGE happened in a big and wonderful way.

So: "belief" necessary for personal change -- but not political change.

But I guess from DC's perspective, Boehner built that.

For many years, he and his minions controlled all the Republican volunteer organizations in the state. It was a long, hard battle for conservatives to redeem them. We were constantly threatened with law suits and I know people who told me they were physically attacked. Chapters that had never been active before suddenly popped up with lots of members and votes for statewide office. I personally heard Thomas' COS attack Conservative backers at GOP County meetings. This also means those who were working against Boehner kept quiet about it. There's a gap between the Consensus Media's conclusions and reality (as you say) and that indicates a positive in our favor. Whoever comprised the group of Boehner's opponents weren't trying to play up to the media.

True. That's why the libtards are winning. They never gave up and that's how they've captured the schools and the media and pop culture to the point that they are churning out future libs daily. Took them 40 years.
Does the left ever give up on grabbing guns? No, they don't. They only double down on their stupidity when presented with evidence that shows guns save lives. They don't truly care about people's lives. They care about having control.

Has to be done, but everyday I did it I thought, WHY are we making government work? Why do we accept goals for government that our founding fathers would have thought outrageous?

604 George Carlin started out funny then lost it. Sad. Remember when Rosie O'Donnell was funny. Now it would be funnier if she said she wanted someone to paint her ... instead of house. Bill Cosby isn't funny. Jokes about forgetting your bugler alarm password or you wife not letting you eat cookies aren't funny. But ... "Dammit get in here" "But Dad, Dammit is in the house. I'm Jesus Christ" ...
That was funny when he told it.

On a somewhat related note, I've been seeing chatter elsewhere about what might have happened if the Cold War had Gone Hot. At the altitude they were at there is a VERY brief period of useful consciousness If the pressurization drops slowly rather than an sudden decompression the crew may proceed to confusion and unconsciousness before they realize what is happening. Some pilots do carry fingertip pulse oximeters but they are certainly not required. An O2 mask next to the pilots is required, but if you don't realize something is wrong it never gets put on.

685 Until about '63 eating meat on Friday was a Mortal
Sin in the Catholic Church. John the XXIII got rid of that. Fish was not
considered meat.

Mortal Sin means the devil's got your soul, forever. Fire. Brimstone. Awful Offal, etc.

Posted by: Meremortal at September 25, 2015 09:39 PM (hTqVx)

It was not a mortal sin. Mortal sin are things like murder, abortion, rape, adultery. Not eating meat is a form of abstinence and penance. Ending meatless Fridays happened after John XXIII.

718 These are very good thoughts. Lost me at the end, though, with "allow to hope" they will do no such thing. They cannot.

You see, *strikes professorial pose* they're human, they've taken root as humans do, set roots as soon as they stay put for five minutes, human roots, they marry their opponent's exes, marry media people, lobby, take advisory positions, produce offspring that take up in Washington into the same types jobs. They create and become their own class. You can't teach an old leopard new spots and you can drink a horse's water but you can't have lead in it. They cannot change, cannot properly adapt. They must be forced out.

I realized after reading about Whigs in Wikipedia. A short article said more than my entire American history class. They were only around 20 years and did a very good job of countering wholly corrupted Democrat party. Until they became so divided, (rooted in Washington) that they became useless as brakes to the crazy.

Before Whigs there was nothing. After Whigs there were Republicans. Now Republics suffer precisely same fate except much larger and far more involved more expensive and all-encompassing.

Call them whatever you like they must go. They don't work anymore. They work for themselves isolated from their base and incapable of representing. As constituted presently they're useless.

721 Things wrong with this piece:

1. LOTS of pundits had Boehner leaving. At bloggingheads.tv, two days ago, The Daily Caller's Matt Lewis reported hearing from a source that Boehner's resignation was pending and soon (It's still up on the website.). Twice over the past ten days there've been blogposts at the lefty Washington Monthly that Boehner's resignation was on the table as a last ditch means of getting funding continued thru this quarter. And those are only some examples. Point being, Internet pundits, of BOTH sides, far from in consensus on Boehner's job being safe, were openly posting of exactly this gambit.

2. How is it NOT a loss to the HFC that the establishment GOP found a way to get funding continued thru this quarter with NO condition of defunding Planned Parenthood? Boehner himself has stated he actually wanted to leave last year - presumably BEFORE the most-recent mid-terms. It seems more than possible the establishment GOP required Boehner to stay on for just this eventuality.

3. I sympathize with Ace and many morons here that selecting McCarthy to succeed Boehner means zero change, but - who exactly OTHER than establishment GOP leadership stepping forward to take the gavel at this point? And if an HRC-favorable candidate for Speaker DOES emerge, who says that candidate has enough support to win the job? They're certainly not getting any votes in support from the Dem Caucus now, are they?

4. Now, it DOES appear that Ace's dream scenario of self-destructive chaos include the possibility that NO speaker emerges from this situation and the Congress essentially goes so catatonic that NO budget is possible; but all that does is put the center of power in the House, thru the magic of PLURALITY, into the hands of Pelosi. How possible is it the the Dem Caucus could cobble together a Continuing Resolution with absolute unanimity on the Dem side plus a few dozen establishment GOP members? Very.

725 "475 This Pope said he believed in evolution because God was not a magician. "

That makes perfect sense to me. Science, magic, religion, they are all the same thing with the same Author. Of course God used science... I tend to think he did it somewhat faster than the current way of measuring allows, but that is because we now live under a created sense of time that God is not restrained by, and we can't see it the way He sees it.

It isn't just time that is the problem with current evolutionary theory, but science will catch up with religion some day, and they will agree.

1. Lots? I disagree. A few pundits talked about this. "lots" is not in any way accurate.
2. your #2 is on a completely different topic than Ace's #2. You're ranting about defunding PP; Ace was talking about how some feel Boehner left "to spare the party".
3. not sure what you're trying to say here. If your point is "no one other than establishment cronies has a shot at the speakership," than 1) how do you know? 2) you say they're "not getting any votes in support from the Dems" like it's a bad thing. and 3) I don't really give a damn. As Ace said, a purge is a purge, and he's absolutely right. A message needs to be sent, and it's going to hurt.
4. "Ace's dream scenario of self-destructive chaos" - you are totally missing the point. This is a purge and an attempt to change the GOP. It's going to hurt, and it's going to be chaotic, and the process will not be pretty. "How possible is it the the Dem Caucus could cobble together a Continuing Resolution " -- so what? If the speakership stays empty? Good! You're focusing on short-term image problems. STOP IT. the long term is what matters. Clean house now, no matter how painful, so when crunch time comes in 2016 the GOP isn't a pathetic joke.

733 You Boehner haters are a sorry lot. It seems to be the only thing that gets your adrenaline running is the idea of closing down the government and with the eventual cave in, as some from marginal districts cannot stand the pressure.

The problem is the current use of the filibuster. The filibuster was never intended to be used to stop appropriation bills. The Dems have learned to stop all the appropriation bills to force a year ending CR.

Getting rid of Boehner and McConnell are not part of thre solution.

The solution is reforming the filibuster. There are different dangers involved in that.

Posted by: Arkansas Yankee at September 26, 2015 01:07 PM (Je4OY)

734 732: "A message needs to be sent, and it's going to hurt."

"hurt" HOW, exactly, and WHO? Hurt the agenda of the Chamber of Commerce, or the billionaire donor class, the hedge funders and Wall Street banksters? And 'actually', or just their feelings?

Do you have someone else in mind for who gets "hurt"? I can think of 2 categories who stand to take it right up the ass from defunding the federal government:

1) Republicans, getting "hurt" at the ballot box in November 2016 (and not just the White House, which is probably already a lost cause, or that plus the Senate, but identifying the GOP with a government shut-down stands a decent chance of causing a 'wave' election result in the House - especially given that 'wave' election results have become the new normal); and

2) any American who isn't wealthy enough as to be functionally independent of government - meaning, at most 5,000 Americans out of at least 300,000,000, or well less than one American out of sixty thousand.

Those who want to kill off government are in the decided minority. And if they fail - IF, I say, because it has to be conceded that history does in fact have lots of examples where minorities and even quite small groups have succeeded in taking over empires and even large democracies - then who exactly does the wounded vengeful animal that is the majority-backed government come after in self-preservation?

Posted by: Wax the Jungle Hog at September 26, 2015 01:38 PM (lqeGC)

735 723: It's been pointed out, elsewhere as well as here, and correctly, that the Constitution does not require the House to select one of its own as its Speaker.

Yet, it's never happened. Why is that? Because powerful institutions, or institutions dedicated to power, or both, are primarily dedicated to self-preservation.

Let's assume that someone has the bright idea of nominating for Speaker 'the most popular person in the country'. Who is that person? It's could well be the current president, or if not him, then his wife. Or it could be an entertainer, where you'd have to go hundreds of names deep into the list of most popular entertainers before you encountered a conservative.

If, for example, Donald Trump's name were put in nomination, would it gain a majority? Of course not, and not even in the House Republican Caucus.

The next Speaker will be someone that most, or if not most then a plurality of the sitting members of the House feel they can influence. It's theoretically conceivable that the Speaker is not a sitting member, but it has never happened in 230 years and as a matter of practicality it will not happen now.

Posted by: Wax the Jungle Hog at September 26, 2015 01:50 PM (lqeGC)

736 Wax the Jungle Hog:
>Republicans, getting "hurt" at the ballot box in November 2016
you don't know that. you're simply assuming the conventional wisdom is correct. I think that a shutdown between now and 2016 would be lost in the noise of a big campaign -- there will be so many accusations and attacks that it will simply be one more. And how would a GOP shutdown hurt, for example, Fiorina or Carson, neither of whom would be involved?
>Those who want to kill off government are in the decided minority.
I have some bad news for you: I don't want to kill off government. I want to shrink it. The people who want to kill off government are called "anarchists" and are, generally speaking, morons.

741 To my knowledge, there is no position of Speaker of the Republican Caucus. The job is known as Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States. Indeed, the House Speaker is the next person in line to become president of the United States, not president of the Republican Party, if the president and VP are incapacitated. What would be so bad about the House acting as one body representing the American people, rather than two, or three, or seventeen or 435 representing bits and pieces of the citizenry? I would love to see a Speaker forced to forge compromises with the opposition party to pass significant legislation or even get him- or herself elected. It might teach more of us American voters what we should have learned in kindergarten about cooperating to get things done for the good of everyone instead of just yourself and those most like you.
