I know it's a tough road. I made it through Dad's passing but his was sudden and quick. My aunt suffered and I mean suffered. I was with her almost every day and night for six months and stayed at hospice till the end. My sister and I stayed until she was lowered into the ground and the vault sealed as we promised. Pain is inadequate to describe how I feel. Time will tell.

Nah, these were the guys with the pink polo shirts, collars up, plaid shorts, deck shoes and tans.
One of them made the mistake of laughing, pointing at GGE and saying loudly to his friends "That dude is wearing a fucking skirt!"
Within about 2 seconds he and I were approaching nose to nose screaming at each other.
WeirdDave grabbed me and shoved me out the door of the bar that we were supposed to be leaving.

A good number of them were made both for the North West Mounted Police and later for shipping to England as a supplemental weapon when it was hard to turn out sufficient Webleys for the troops during WWI.
Come to think of it, Orbea Hermanos also came out with a substitute .455 for the British during WWI, it looked like a Schofield.
Now, I was always told the superiority of the Colt over the Schofield was that you could bend the frame of the Schofield when you pistol whipped someone with it, but only the front sight was in danger on the Colt.
They all would have been dumped at the end of the war, oddball cartridge for the rest of the world and oddball pistols for the British.

Yep ... in a nutshell.
I loved the golf rules commercial. Pretty funny. But it also illuminates this great obsession many people have with their golf score, to the point of cheating just to brag about some score they could never really shoot. I never understood that. Even Jack Nicklaus was trying to push people to play shorter tees. his reasoning was - "You get better scores from shorter tees!" I like Jack but that was about the most retarded thing anyone in Western civilization has ever said. And he kept saying it, acting as if he was "onto something". Made me almost kick my TV to shut him up.

Doubtful that the Hidebeast would know how to securely wipe a hard drive, so she asked someone else to do it, like the IT company she used to setup her email server.
These guys were smart enough to know the legal problems they would get into by doing it, so instead they just delete the files, (and empty the recyle bin if it's Windows). Job done collect the paycheck.
Of course, deleting the files doesn't remove them from the hard drive, but to Hil and her peeps, "Gee, they're gone"
Hil was in the position where nobody who knows how to do this is going to set themselves up as the fall guy.

Well, the receiver was purchased from Old Western Scrounger. They were former drill rifle receivers. Got it for $149 before tax, shipping, and FFL transfer fee.
Picked up a used barrel from Numrich. Now I need a stock and some time to correctly install the barrel. I am looking at a used 1903a3 stock to rehab and install. If I do that I will have about $350 into it.
Sure it's no collectable, but I still feel it's good to bring another 1903a3 back into the world.
BTW, serial number starts at 344xxxx. So it is a WWII receiver.

A ton of Su-25s have shown up on Syrian airfields in the last week or so.
They are Ivan's rough equivalent of the A-10 Warthog. Low, slow, heavily armored against ground fire, and carrying a whole lot of nasty ordnance.
That would be as expected. What was not expected was that a gaggle of Su-30s showed up as well. Those can do ground attack in a pinch but it is certainly not their forte: they are air superiority fighters by design.
Secretary of State Lurch Horseface described the Russian deployment as "force protection". One analyst responded by pointing out that the force which the Su-30s are best suited to protect against is... the U.S. Air Force.

It is a good, short rifle that you can shoot, unfortunately it also is designed so you will rip your knuckles open on the rear sight if you work the bolt wrong - as in your hand slips just a tiny bit.

Anyway, did you know that total US debt has stayed constant since March 15th? That's 6 months plus a few days. That's the accounting tricks they do. They continue to borrow real money from the bond market, but have a finite amount of wiggle room for creative accounting to hide it and keep the total debt constant.
That is going to expire soon. But I'm amazed it lasted this long. At any rate, when they do hike it, they'll immediately unwind all the tricks and you'll see total public debt jump by hundreds of billions in one day.
So we've got the spending authority expiry and the debt ceiling all coming up around the same time.

The Mdle 1916 was brutally shortened and all the fancy work taken off. They were still unsuited for trench warfare.

Cruz puts it well, but everyone needs to understand it a bit more fully. I've tried several times in comments, and failed, to concisely explain just how important the whole appropriations fiasco has been.
To try to summarize, almost all of Congress' power stems from their control of appropriations. Regular order (passage of separate appropriations bills - there are 16 - per the actual requirements Congress itself set itself) gives the Congress maximum political/practical leverage. "Omnibus" or Continuing Resolution bills, passed near the deadline, give presidents and congressional minorities maximum political/practical leverage. That simple.
Since 2011, there has been little excuse for going along with the outrageous omnibus approach (congressional structure and calendar themselves are built around regular order - I've been wondering WTF most of the committees/staff have even been literally doing for years). Since 2013, there has been *no* serious excuse for the GOP on this. I am stunned as much as I can be anymore that there *still* is no regular order.
Regular order doesn't guarantee you win all fights. But it means there ARE fights when it's to your advantage. Fights, disputes, are how you f***ing *do* politics in Congress. You campaign against each other based on disagreements, not consensus matters. Consultants used to call it differentiation, and it underlay about 90% of amendment votes in the Senate. The Senate in particular, in normal times, is just an endless series of attempts to generate vulnerabilities for your opponents.
I know the Horde and ace et al are rightly disgusted and appalled at the lack of utility in the GOP. But I think that most still do not realize just how bad things are. NORMAL congressional politics is fighting over appropriations, putting vulnerable opponents on record in ways that may hurt them, making a president veto certain bills, AND never ceding an inch to the press' distortions. The GOP has been doing, literally NONE of this, for years.

About that F-15, one of the reasons the Marine F-18 drivers I've talked to are so meh on the F-35 is that a new stores/ordnance set-up, conformal, has given the F-18 - which they already find meets their needs -both more punch and better range. Of course, they're not all thrilled that we're reaching into the boneyard to get old F-18s to re-barrel. And that due to age all their F-18s are "trapped out" and can no longer make carrier deployments.

The 3-oh is no slouch, that's for sure. But I found the k98 to be more reliable for putting rounds on target at long range. The 8mm round combined with the sights of the k98 helped my shitty skilz quite a bit. However if I had to choose one over the other, for unknown situations, it'd be the 303, for the reasons you listed. 10x rounds, fast action, good accuracy. I'd rather the rifle saved my arse than rack up long range hits.

For once I was smart and got in before they cost more than $100. Even at $200 they are a bargain. My dad called them Russian junk until with iron sites I drilled a 24x24 target repeatedly at 500 yards from a sitting position. The rifle was made in 1938, before he was even born. No more "junk" comments after that.

One of the reasons the Navy in general is "meh" about the F-35 is it's a single engine aircraft. And the only thing that needs to happen is for the Navy to transition all their lot 10 and above Hornets to the USMC as they transition to the E/F. Only a few Marine squadrons deploy on ships anyway so they don't really need the carrier capability, but even the ones that are "trapped out" can still do a trap if needed.

There is. Right behind Speaker of the House. The Senate Pro Tempore. He's supposed to be the guy that presides over the Senate when the Vice President isn't there. But since they don't follow that the Vice President is in charge of the Senate I don't think they follow that for the Pro Tempore either, and usually its the most senior or maybe even oldest senator that is given that spot.

RWC, you'd have to dig up the Founding Fathers and ask them (unless this issue was specifically addressed at the time in writing), but my guess is that the succession stays with "national" office-holders. And, of course, don't forget that the Senate president pro tem (longest-serving senator) *is* in the line of succession
The Speaker of the House (the "People's House") is selected by the reps selected by the whole country, so is a natural for the spot after vice president. Then Senate president pro tem (the only one there by dint of seniority, not actually selected directly or indirectly by voters).
Then cabinet officers (oldest department, State, and then on down by seniority of executive departments, historically) - who recall are appointed with advise/consent of the Senate, thus making them indirectly a product of "national" voting and representation.

IIRC the constitution originally had the VP, SOTH and Senate Pro tem in order. A modern admendment during the Cold War and threat of nuclear warfare added the caninet, starting w/ the most "senior", Sec. of State.

Well Senate Majority leader isn't a real constitutional position. The President pro tempore of the Senate is actually in the Constitution. And looking at the history until 1886 they were actually ahead of the Speaker of the House in the line of succession.

The VP is the "President of the Senate" when he is presiding over it when the Senate is in session.
When the VP isn't there, the President Pro-Tempore presides over the Senate. Usually, they appoint the most senior member of the majority party, which is Orin Hatch today.

After VEEP, the Constitution does not specify.
Originally, it was Prez. pro Tem., then Speaker.
Later they changed it so that Sec. of State and the rest of the cabinet were the successors, excluding Speaker or Prez. pro Tem. entirely.
The current line-up of Speaker, then Prez. pro Tem., and then the Cabinet was put in place by the GOP Congress in 1947.

buzzion, the VP can chair the Senate any time he likes, but of course in practice only does so when a tie vote-breaking thing may be in the offing.
The presiding officer is selected by the majority and rotates, is basically scut-work (most junior senators do this duty). And presiding officers really don't do anything. Parliamentary/rules issues are decided by the parliamentarian, an appointee/employee of the majority leader in effect, the presiding officer just serves as mouthpiece.
There are the rare exceptions. Dammit, cannot remember who it was - damn I think it was actually Goldwater, an exceedingly odd member to be presiding at all due to age, and it was in the early AM during some protracted wrasslin' match in the Senate on a bill that was far from being over and had dragged on for days.
During one of the long silences - after someone had called a "time out" orquorum call - Goldwater spoke up to say "third reading (meaning final passage) .... that oughta wake 'em up!". You could hear the laughter from the floor over the TV, and in offices around the office buildings.
Goldwater was often hilarious in his last few years.

The VP can preside over the Senate anytime he chooses, just has to show up. In his absence the snator w/ the most seniority from the majority party presides. Tho that is often designated to a substitute, I think any other member of the majority seems to suffice.

Last time they pulled this shit (and kept the official national debt frozen for a couple of months) the debt popped something like $350 billion the day they let the cork out.
It's all a ridiculous joke, at this point. No one can trust any of the numbers, really. And we've all known that the Fed thinks they're going to be able to carry that balance sheet forever and never unwind anything. They really do believe that.
We really do need to go back on the gold standard because this government (and the rest of them) are totally untrustworthy and can't be allowed to have any real control of the money creation process. Only Nature can be trusted with that.

They need that $25M below the limit as sort of a cushion to do the tricks "on paper" so at no time, again on "paper" does the actual total public debt exceed the official limit. When the green eye shade boys in the basement of Treasury are actually doing the accounting, actually shifting the numbers around, they need a little room.
It's all just numbers on paper, or in computers. They do what we like to call IOU^2, or IOU for IOUs. IOU^2 doesn't count toward the debt limit, essentially.
It depends on a lot of factors, some tricks they do with the intragov debt that varies how much room they have. But they can do $300-$400B worth, maybe more, depending on what time of the fiscal year they start the tricks.

The President Pro-Tempore is an elected posistion with an increased salary, access to the most highly classified info, and appointment to commissions and other boards. So there is on "1" of them. They do have an office of "Deputy President Pro-Tempore". This office has none of the access that the Pres. Pro Tem has, but they preside over the chamber when the VP, PPT aren't there. This is probably one that any member of the majority party gets to be.

The SotH and the SPT in theory have regular interaction with the executive branch as well as the legislative branch, so if necessary they can ensure an orderly transition. Cabinet members are more likely to know the ins and outs of that executive branch than Senators.
Let's face it, if the President, VP, SotH, and Senate Pro Tem are all gone, it's a major crisis. I'd much rather the Secretary of State step into the role of President than the junior Senator from Wyoming, at least in the short term.

Yes, Hat and Farmer, the whole cabinet thing is quite modern, and driven by Cold War "continuity of government" (COG) considerations, very big stuff in nukyler war-fighting plans. Of course such concerns were unknown prior to the nuclear/missile/jet age.
buzzion, interesting idea re Cruz. Not sure what the presiding officer can actually do to f**k with the process. Think he has to proceed per the Senate rules. When something is challenged based on the rules, a vote of the body decides it (voting yeah/nay on the parliamentarian's reading).
Real rules fights are rare (hell, today, probably completely unheard of). I recall a barnburning classic one where Sen. Byrd was challenging the parliamentarian's interpretation. Byrd was probably the last senator who really did know the rules (unless there's another one like him that I haven't heard about). As the parliamentarian (his words repeated by the presiding officer) and Byrd exchanged arguments, the dispute narrowed down to a footnote and where it ranked.
Footnotes denoted with Roman numerals, vs. those denoted with arabic numerals. This played into the substance of the matter. Byrd was correct and won the dispute (don't recall if a vote was required). But the thing was rare, dramatic,and cool enough that you actually had senators drifting on the floor to listen (this generally doesn't happen, ever), and offices throughout the Senate were glued to their TVs.

Will drop the Senate stuff, but mentioning Byrd reminds me of one very striking (no, shocking and terrible) thing that has happened recently that was unimaginable in any prior historical period.
When Obama made the improper recess appointments, recall he was sued (and lost). If something like this had been pulled by a president (any president) in all previous history, the Senate (with people like Byrd in the lead) would have ripped the administration's jewels off.
Not with a sissy lawsuit. But with a nukyler ultimatum on everything ($$$$, appointments, etc.) that any president would have no choice but to comply with. You'd have had majority/minority leaders, together, in front of the cameras belching hellfire, that afternoon, and most likely a contrite WH press secretary expressing regret for a "misunderstanding" before rush hour.
The astonishing disappearance of institutional jealousy over const. prerogatives and division of power - one of the ingenious unwritten kinds of mortar that has made our system so strong - is among the most troubling and puzzling developments of the last few years. (Yes, Dems in the case of Senate/appointments, but across the board with lots of other key powers)

The Speaker has to keep about 125 people on his side, lined up to support him. Those people change every 2 years.
Senate Majority Leader has the keep about 27 people on his side. Only a few change every 2 years. He can also open up avenues of $$$$ which is more important in Senate races than in House races.

Oddly enough, the fiancee and I were just talking about fleas earlier today......as in, raising chickens is supposed to be a good way to keep fleas out of your yard (the chickens eat them) (though they make their eggs taste gamey) but there are many animals (coons, coyotes, etc.) that will attempt predation on chickens, and how I'd seen chicken yards on wheels so that you could continually move your chickens around on large lawns so as to continually decimate the flea population......none of which actually helps you with your fleas in the house problem [though it may get you closer to building a clock] [see Bing search on "Ahmed Cthulhu-jihad clock"] unless you wanted to raise indoor chickens [Hint: potty-training them is verrrrry difficult].

That was my point - the Senate's prerogatives in appointments being directly challenged, to the point of testing something in court - I think that's new. It is very hard to believe that the primary reaction of the Senate in all prior eras would have been legal, rather than political (as I noted).
Some may say the Iran deal thing is similar, but it's far more complicated, if only in that executive agreements have been used many many times by several modern presidents. Not saying this case is OK, or identical to most of the others since WWII - just that the appointments dispute is pretty much unprecedented. And was really a breath-taking assault on an unquestioned Senate prerogative.
Ashley, my point is different (not really about elected officials' tools and levers for re-election). Senators are not blase about their powers or prerogatives vis-a-vis the other branches, or losing them. The institution as a whole has always been jealous of same - I think one of the elements that makes the whole separation of powers thing a working reality. In the world I used to know, it was unimaginable that senators would sit still for the body's appointment powers to be degraded by brazen presidential behavior. Apparently, not so much any more (notwithstanding the sissy lawsuit).

The three branches are (1) the Legislative -- who set the rules; (2) the Executive -- who do the things the rules allow; and (3) the Judicial -- who ensure the government and the body-politic act within the rules. There is no reason for a temporary replacement within the executive branch to come from anywhere but the executive.

Part of it is Reid. iirc, he was the Majority Leader when the recess appointments took place. And he exercised such an iron grip on the Senate when he was in charge that even his fellow Democrats commented on it and complained about it.
The weirdest bit is that he's such a control freak that going nuts over Obama's appointments seems much more in character for him.

Yeah, I remember that case. The victim was a little girl, and the rapist was so brutal in what he did that he basically destroyed her sex organs to the extent that she'll probably never be able to have normal sex (assuming that the psychological issues don't get her first). Once the roles were reversed, there was no way McConnell was going to do anything because he is afraid of conflict. He wants a "get along and go along" policy of dealing with things. It's been pretty evident with all the CR's that Congress has passed in the last 8 years that they don't want any kind of fight that can upset the gravy train.

Actually, it was the House's responsibility to stop an out-of-control tyrant who thought he could declare when the Senate is in session or not and shove through his nominees illegally. That is a clearly impeachable act that the House was required to act on. One would assume that the Senate, being the institution shat on by the tyrant, would automatically convict, as their part in preserving the Constitutional order. But it was clearly the House's job to start the process to put a stop to a nutcase in the White House.

Byrd himself, in the last years of his career, started to talk really oddly. I used to watch C-Span a lot, he started as what seemed to be a principled, if party-loyal, "conscience of the Senate" who would bring issues of propriety to the fore.
Around the time of the Clinton impeachment, he started to fail to finish a lot of his sentences, and described in a lot of instances that "this body" was being asked to do a lot of things that it shouldn't... at first it seemed he might be referring to other bodies, or the Presidency, or the people.... maybe even lobbyists. He was too vague.
But sometimes the fact that he would trail off so much was kind of sinister. Maybe it was just old age, but it sure did prompt some conspiracy theorizing. Maybe he was just old and disillusioned, but his complaints could be interpreted as of something else he was afraid to mention.
I always connected the whole thing with McCain-Feingold-Soros and the mass-purchase of lobbying groups, but who knows.
Gave me the creeps, basically.
Like when that stenographer wigged out on the House floor a couple of years ago and started shouting about secret societies. Damned if that wasn't straight out of a conspiracy movie about secret societies.

I live in the Philadelphia suburbs, and as you may have heard, the Pope is visiting Philly this weekend.
I work in a printing shop, and this week a customer ordered 6000 souvenir Pope trading cards. You know, like baseball cards. He intends to sell them to the tourists.
The color printer that I was going to print them on had some problems, and I had to call a service technician twice. Meanwhile the clock was ticking. Needless to say, this was a very time-sensitive job.
Finally, on Thursday afternoon, I ran the job, and the guy who operated the cutting machine finished cutting them just before he left at 4:30 with the customer standing there waiting. It was a near-run thing.
The customer also had T-shirts made up elsewhere, and he gave one to each of us. He seemed to be satisfied with the cards.
Now, I'm not Catholic, and I'm certainly not a fan of this particular Pope. But a gift is a gift, and I thanked him and wished him luck selling his stuff.
I have no intention of going into the city this weekend to brave the crowds and traffic to see the Pope. I've laid in stocks of food, booze, and smokes, so I do not have to leave the house at all and can quietly hunker down.
At first I could not envision a scenario where I would ever wear the T-shirt. I figured that I would put it away in a drawer and forget about it.
But now I've decided to wear it while mowing the lawn on Saturday. It's likely that nobody will see it or notice. But if one person drives by and does a double take, it will be worth it. "Huh? Why is that guy wearing a Pope shirt but isn't downtown watching the Pope? Did he go into the city this morning just to buy a shirt, and then went back home to mow his lawn? WTF is up with that?"

Government consists of the only set of jobs for which there is no requirement of any sort of knowledge. None. That being said, it doesn't mean that one doesn't attempt to minimize any damage and stay within the actual system.
This whole debate is just a matter of opinion and personal preference, of course, but I find it funny how the Constitution can specify succession to roles that are not Constitutional roles. Those roles don't even need to exist, per the Constitution, but they are spelled out by that same Constitution as being the seats from which the President will come if a bunch of people happen to blow up or all trip down the same staircase or something. Doesn't that seem a bit odd to you?

A random selection from the House would be perfectly fine - subject to the restrictions that that person must be Constitutionally eligible, of course.
The reason for all this is because the President is not supposed to be any sort of royal running the Executive branch without any restrictions as his own personal fiefdom. The Constitutonal limits on the Executive should serve to mitigate any problems a dipshit President might bring, and for that reason that Constitutional role should only be filled (in emergencies) by people who are occupying some other Cosntitutional role - so that that can actually be specified in the Constitution (unlike what we currently have).

I still disagree with you on this point. In government, there's no consideration of skill required for anything and there's nothing that a President has that is any different than a legislator. Neither of them are especially talented at anything. They're just in government jobs, where the largest set of assets are run by the worst managers. There is no skill set required for any of those jobs, so they are easily interchangeable.
But, I still prefer your "governor succession" list to what we currently have with the toadies in the cabinet.

But Bob Dylan's cover from 1970 is strangely missing from YouTube. It can be found on the "Another Self Portrait" box set.
It absolutely blows every other version away. Dylan sings that song like he owns it. Anderson's original sounds halting and tentative; Dylan sounds completely confident. It is like night and day. It is not only the best cover of that song; it is one of Dylan's best recordings period. I was gobsmacked the first time I heard it.
Dylan likes Anderson and has praised him. I think maybe he kept his version off YouTube to avoid showing up Anderson.
