Quote of the Day I

I'm not willing to surrender free speech in any corner of the still just-about-free world. So I'll be in Copenhagen at the end of the month to stand with a small number of truly brave people who don't get a tenth of the support they should either from their fellow Danes or the rest of Europe. Flemming Rose, the commissioning editor of the original Mohammed cartoons, will be there, along with Henryk Broder, who wrote the book Hurra, wir kapitulieren ("Hurray! We surrender" ) about Germany and Islam, and also my old friend from the free-speech barricades Douglas Murray. The event will be held in the Danish Parliament, not because it's a very attractive building but rather, as Douglas explains, "because it's the only place in Denmark sufficiently secure enough that - we hope - the now traditional gunmen won't be able to get in and shoot everyone."

As I've noted before, since I last appeared in Copenhagen, some three-quarters of those I shared the stage with that day have been shot at, firebombed or forced to retire from public life and go into hiding. So Douglas and I find ourselves cornering a market no one else wants a piece of.

-- Mark Steyn

Quote of the Day II

Now we know why Democrats were so insistent somebody had to be cooking the intelligence about Saddam Hussein's WMD's.  It's because that's what they would have done themselves to fit their policy line.

-- Arthur Herman in Cooking the Intelligence on ISIS

Quote of the Day III

The cuckoo is one of the more interesting migrants in the animal kingdom. It spends part of the year in sunny Africa, but nests and breeds in Europe. Cuckoos appropriate the nests of other birds to lay eggs. The lark or dove in turn does not recognize the egg threat and even feeds the cuckoo chicks after they hosta. Eventually, the larger aggressive cuckoo chicks either evict or kill any host offspring.

Brood parasitism features several related behaviors; egg mimicry, egg or chick evictions, or once the cuckoo chick is established, nest fratricide. Still, no cuckoo ever becomes a chickadee.

-- G. Murphy Donovan in Mohammed's Cuckoos

Quote of the Day IV

The Islamic State now has a safe haven and resources of which al Qaeda in 2001 could only have dreamed. Every day we lazily, arrogantly provoke them without finishing the job. No one should be surprised by the consequences, which are as predictable as they are terrible.

-- Aaron MacLean in Manipulated Intel and the Kabuki War against the Islamic State

Unicorn Woman Ready to Lose Her Horn

As Xiuzhen cannot sleep, and the tumor bleeds occasionally, doctors are ready to operate and remove the unicorn horn from the woman's head. However, her family is concerned that the 87-year-old may not recover from the surgery and are looking into alternative treatments. Fellow villagers are happy that the surgery has been postponed, feeling that they need more time to come up with a new nickname since calling a hornless Xiuzhen 'horse woman' wouldn't make much sense. Plus, China already has a horned goat woman, so the new moniker will take some creativity.

107 Michael Yon put up this parable explaining Germany and their answer to the "refuge" problem on his FB page today:

Germany: the Kind Man and the Fish

One day a kindhearted man decided that the fish were hungry so he bought bread to throw in the water. Many fish came and the man was happy.

The next day the man came back to the wooden dock with another loaf of bread and now there were twice as many fish and not enough bread.

The next day he brought two loaves of bread but there were three times the number of fish and still not enough bread.

A month later the man needed a truck for all the bread and he ran out of money to buy food for the fish.

The next day he came to the dock to say to the fish, "I am sorry, I am broke and have no more money for bread. I hope you enjoyed our time to together. Time to go home."

The fish ate him.

Also, with the "refugee" youth coming forth to jihad, get ready for some bird flu mixed with MERS and a twist of ebola. Coming soon. It always starts with the end of eid and their little walk around the rock. (I just hope I don't get that Joni Mitchell disease with fibers coming out of skin).

180 Angry all the time nowadays. News is blatant lies and propaganda, like something out of Orwell. Nobody seems to notice or care.

Europe is being invaded, Iran's going to get the bomb, Asia's sliding into economic chaos and we're not far behind. But the news keeps telling us how great Obama is and how great Hillary will be!

We keep talking about when people will wake up. But I don't think they will. The West is done. We're looking at the New Dark Age -- and as Churchill predicted, made darker by the twisted light of perverted science. There will be plenty of high-tech toys available to manipulate us, monitor us, and fix our brains if we commit badthought.

Democrats all apparently believe 1984 was a Utopian novel and have done their best to bring it about. Just a few years late is all.

Damn them all. Every single last Democrat, from the illegal alien being bused from polling place to polling place, to the bearded hipster repeating Jon Stewart lines at Starbucks, to the bitch who takes billions in foreign bribes and wants to be queen. Damn them all to hell.

That Steyn excerpt at the top is so chilling and infuriating. It makes one sit back and just wonder how dead freedom is, as an idea, in the west.

TN shahada. A few years back, a local radio host (think a caller tip) outed an outrageous Islamic indoctrination activity at a local public school. Not the building - this was on school time, classroom activity. Literally within days the entire thing was shut down. ACLU? (sound of crickets ..... distant muffled gunfire .... more crickets) Same city where the ACLU has assisted in the decades-long, utterly insane, jihad to take down a vets' monument/cross.

Intel story. Wrote but held it yesterday, but the story ace used an excerpt of (Daily Caller?) had a classic bit of distortion. The CENTCOM scandal (actual IG investigation, lots and lots of specific direct complaints on substance), you see, "echoed" the CLAIMS made under Bush WRT Iraq estimates. "Claims" that were investigated and found baseless. (oh, same thing in the UK, where the BBC ended up mired in scandals of their own while an actual investigation cleared British intel of any improper behavior - to include, by two different bodies, confirming that the reporting underlying the famous "16 words" in Bush's speech was well-founded).

Just so you don't mess this up: bogus charges of intel fixing recklessly advanced during war-time by partisans= actual well-founded claims of intel fixing by insiders and investigators. Might want to write that down.

Seems small. But there, in essence, is a perfect illustration of how almost every.single.thing a consumer of mass media sees/hears/reads contains distortion. Often, gross distortion. And thus you can have conversations with "intelligent" people who are as misinformed as a district committee chairman from Omsk in 1970 who relied on Soviet media.

But I have no remaining tolerance for the bereaved who lash out by trying to kill others, endanger others, impoverish others, or take away their freedom. Which is exactly what these parents of the TV reporter are doing (or attempting, vainly), in effect.

I think I held my tongue/keyboard when this was discussed, as too many would (lazily) interpret such a reaction as cold or churlish. Nonsense. Something horrible happens to somebody. Their loved ones don't suddenly get issued a license to, in their ignorance or stupidity, attack the rights freedoms and welfare of others. Which is all this is.

They can say anything they want. And we all can anything we want right back. Hell, it probably would be helpful, in the long run, for people touched by tragedy like this to get hosed down with reality and logic, right off.

A dream in a dream of mine is a HS class for critical media studies.

The primary material would be news stories re-written with arbitrary, nonsense object nouns to diffuse any potential political bias.

EG: The article about a GOP pol promoting a law to 'hurt teh wimmenz' is edited to 'the FMP pol promoting a law to hurt the gerfplims. Opposing YUW pol opposes because "Slurm!~" '

The object being to point out biased, sloppy reasoning and arguments, and the potential for misinformation in every story.

250 There is no such thing as a critical shortage of workers. Only a critical shortage of wages paid out by transnational corporations.

Um. There are no people to wages to. I do get how supply and demand works, y'know. If you have 10,000 jobs and 9000 workers, 1000 jobs aren't going to get done no matter what the pay is.

rickl, MWNP is right - not very many people have the tools to even understand why they should be angry.

Most people I know aren't angry. Then again, they're "citizens" of a republic as much as they are hamsters - they're passive, tribal, narrow-minded people marinating in the Idiot Marinade their whole lives, whose life experience appears not to have widened their horizons one iota. All "educated".

Then there are the far more sophisticated and informed types. And I'd say resignation and resentment are more common than anger. And a bit of disbelief - still. And in some, just an effort to, somehow, wall off their interests and their worlds from a country/world they decreasingly feel any real connection to.

Every election, one of these media dickheads that just happens to be covering the campaign miraculously ends up as spokesman for the Dem politician should they win the race. Every. Fucking. Time.

I once worked in the belly of the beast, and the media's incestuous relationship with the Dems is unfuckingbelievable. From the top to the bottom, they are all fucking each other, hanging out together after work, vacationing together, and developing strategy together. It made me fucking sick to my stomach, and when I saw shit that was blatantly illegal, there wasn't a damn place I could go to, so I got the fuck out of there.

Then I tell them if they hate Citizens United so much because corporations got "rights of a person", then they should be against the New York Times, Inc having the right to freedom of the press .

I continue to think that Khanna was a ploy by TPTB to put in a younger, more progressive face to lock in crony socialism for another generation. If you skim the article cynically, it seems that Honda staffers weren't exactly along for the ride -- their bread-and-butter was keeping ol' Mike doddering along, and they wouldn't have been as young-and-hip as the folks Khanna was going to employ. With the election-rigging totally shutting out any other viewpoints, this set up a confrontation among scumbags between the aspirational and the situational.

I'm far beyond anger. And as I noted above, most people I know might as well be hamsters, as far as being able to discuss or engage them on any of this. The people I know who like myself spent most of their lives working on this s**t are in combined states of disbelief, despair, and resignation.

The wages adjust, the demand adjusts, or tech adjusts the elasticity.

Wrong. Yes, technology can change the number of jobs, but wages adjusting will just shift which 1000 jobs are unfilled at the moment. Demand will also not change the fact that there are jobs aren't getting done. Say there are no garbage men because every other job pays more. The people adjust by dropping their own trash off at the dump. There is still a job for a garbage man that is being done by the people. In a looser labor market that job would be filled. You would argue that the demand for that job vanished. I contend that there is not enough labor supply to fill it. If 1000 more people show up (who are willing to work), that job will again be filled.

Once the cloture vote fails, the leader pulls the bill. No actual filibustering required.

Of course, for the 10,000th time, here was a missed opportunity to f**king nail the idiot Dems to their now-insane policy choices. Do away with the filibuster on this vote and force anup/down tally. Use the dramatic/unusual circumstances and resulting media attention to hammer the bejeesus out of the deal, the Dems, the WH's behavior. Limbaugh has been right about this for decades now. Politics IS downstream from culture.

News talking heads dictate the mis-understanding of facts in the world.

Entertainment media uses emotionalism to brainwash the weak minded as to the facts of the world.

The leftist judiciary buttfucks the facts of the world.

And the politicians vote in ways to keep all those beautiful people funding their re-election campaigns, where they can distribute from the trough, to those same rent-seeking, beautiful people.

The late Vince Flynn had it right in his inaugural novel, "Term Limits".

Which should be on every Moron's bookshelf, just as Rules for Radicals held pride of place on the left's shelves for decades.

Flynn had some damn good ideas in that book, and every Moron should get a copy and read it, just as soon as possible.

How many auto employees were there in 1888?

How many were there is 1910?

1920?

Say there are no garbage men because every other job pays more. The people adjust by dropping their own trash off at the dump. There is still a job for a garbage man that is being done by the people. In a looser labor market that job would be filled.

Everyone demands and receives the same wage? Sorry, that's not reality. Scales are natural considering the supply. College grads, for example, are going to insist on a higher wage even if the entire theoretical economy consisted of sanitation.

I continue to think that Khanna was a ploy by TPTB to put in a younger, more progressive face to lock in crony socialism for another generation.

Possibly, and the article thinks so. If Khanna ran essentially on his own, Khanna's campaign makes sense. But Khanna was much too flawed to win, so why select him? Perhaps he was simply a mistake ... not sufficiently vetted.

If you skim the article cynically, it seems that Honda staffers weren't exactly along for the ride -- their bread-and-butter was keeping ol' Mike doddering along, ...

I saw some of his staffers at a townhall; it looks like some have been with him for a decade at least. He's their meal ticket, so getting him re-elected makes sense.

Fortunately for me, I'm looking to leave.

C. Jenner, not bad - that analogy of Merkel and the pilot of the doomed German Wings plane.

Meine frage: how the hell can the German electorate accept this? As I cracked in the earlier thread on this point, are they now to be called "Merkel's Willing Executioners (of German Culture)"? (apologies to Goldhagen and the endless debates over the extent of mainstream support for Hitler's worst depredations)

The linked article by Stuttaford at NRO is good and contains one really interesting point: Merkel is bludgeoning some smaller EU members, esp. in central Europe, to take refugees against their better judgement and will, and threatening to use the EU's conveniently stacked procedures to FORCE this if they don't agree.

Stuttaford observes (correctly) that this path is certain to make things even worse in those countries for any migrants/refugees admitted. But beyond that - what about the impact on the EU overall? Germany may be making a panicked and poor decision that not everyone wants to join. This is wild.

I really think it's as simple as they are a self-hating culture who has had it drummed in to their head that racial identity, nationalism, and the idea of cultural supremacy are the absolute worst things on the planet. Which is why their birth rate is the lowest in the world, they are committing cultural suicide, and why very few people are willing to speak up at all and say "um, Merkel, maybe it's not a great idea to change the character of our country by bringing in millions of Jew- Christian- and infidel- hating Muslims."

------------------

Not just Christian churches. I once heard from one of my Indian co-workers that they did the same thing in that country when they invaded. Well, sort of. They leveled the shrines first, and built a mosque on top of each one. But given that the shrines existed because the ground occupied by the shrine was what was holy, it amounted to more or less the same thing. It wasn't like the local Hindus could build another shrine three doors down.

And there's the Temple Mount in Israel.

Remember how easy it is to get cross-wired as to meaning and tone (and even who's being addressed) in this format, friends. And I do mean friends.

And newhandle, that's a decent stab at explaining the Germans. I am very familiar with that pattern of behavior. But it only seems to apply to the non-moonbat, non-scumbag part of German society.

The idiot greens/commies were not shy about their anti-INF shenanigans, even as the majority supported deployment. And the vile Schroeder regime was utterly brazen in f**king their real allies in order to make a deutschmark in Iraq. So while the guilt/penitance factor is definitely part of it, as in all things it only seems to constrain the more sensible elements.

I don't know. When I was in highschool, we did an exchange with a high school in Germany. I forget where, but they were from West Germany and the kids stayed with host families for a few months.

One night, the 10 or so exchange students were partying with us at a buddies house. Long story short, after a few drinks, one of the German kids said something along the lines of, "I'm really surprised at how nice everyone in America has been to us."

and I said, "why? Because all Americans are assholes?"

And he said, "no. Because everyone hates Germans. I mean our grandfathers fought your grandfathers in war."

And I said, "nah, I think most Americans are kind of over that.... and I dont think that everyone hates Germans..."

and he said, "yes they do. We're despised. I tell people im Swiss when I travel in Europe." and the rest of the exchange students agreed.

It kind of stuck with me.

STEM field.

Lotsa publications.

I didn't risk five years of my life to not be called "Doctor"...

My grandparents were poor and made sure that my parents had the moral, educational, and intellectual ability to go beyond what they have. Aside from my late Grandmother (who got an A.A. degree after my Grandfather passed), the only ones in my extended family to have a college degree other than me are my parents (six degrees between them) and a sister (B.S. and M.S.).

Only one of my many cousins graduated High School and attended any college. I know that I have my degrees not because of some "privilege", but because my parents made sure I and my youngest sister had opportunities.

The daughter of one of my cousins has been accepted to a college nursing program with full scholarship. That is a worthy field. I fully support her.

Much older guy sitting across in the compartment, just the two of us. He starts some small talk. Back then my German was still decent, so we start to chat. I explain my summer, explain that I spent the summer in Leningrad studying Russian.

He smiles, says "yeah, I spent a summer there once too" and holds up his left forearm. As I recall, there was some discoloration, some sort of lump, and he says "got this there".

I just laughed and said "I understand".

The sad fact is that lack of a degree detracts from that.

Heck, just having a Ph.D. got me craploads of discounts on insurance... that it was a useful degree was irrelevant... only the degree itself seemed to matter.

I can testify to that your honor... /smile...

When I started in IT, there was no such thing AS IT.... the only degrees available were for programming.

35 years later, even after teaching College Accredited classes, my not having a degree puts me at a huge disadvantage when looking for a position.

HR folks only see Degree, or no Degree, and use that to judge because they don't understand the field enough to make coherent judgments on Experience.

Now add in H1B people with 'degrees' from the University of Bumfuckia.... which no one even tries to verify....

And we have an interesting job situation for us older IT workers here in the US (interesting as in may you live in interesting times).

I think Vice (someone) did a documentary on an american soldier who came home and really went to bat to get his interpreter paperwork to come to the US.

Basically, the US promised the interpreters they'd be allowed to come to the US, then reneged. And this guy fought all kinds of red tape, the interpreter had to go in to hiding as soon as the americans left...

made our govt look really shitty. BUt in the end the guy moved to the US and I THINK actually ended up being roommates with the american soldier somewhere in the US

I've known many without a degree who are far more expert in their field than I.

I've known many master Glass Workers who I could never aspire to reach.

In my field, I know what I know, but I do not presume to know more than others just because I have a piece of parchment with some glorified title.

I earned the right to be referred to as "Doctor" not by a piece of parchment, but through the literal blood, sweat, and tears (and explosions) I went through. I stake my title not on a piece of parchment, but on the work and advancement of science I furthered.

396 @373 Yes, junior. Forget the details, but there was at least one major German formation that fought through the Soviet lines to get *to* the American lines, where they promptly surrendered. Think it was in Erickson's Battle of Berlin book.
-------------------

If it was in a book on Berlin, then it might have been Panzer Division Muncheburg. Most of the division didn't make it, though.

And they weren't the only unit that tried that. 3rd SS Totenkopf, probably the most notorious of the SS divisions, did that.

And then the Americans handed them over to the Soviets.

Hans Von Luck wrote in his book about how in the last days, everyone was trying to slip over to the American sector, and how the German military police were getting hyper-sensitive about it. One NCO he knew was shot for desertion because the NCO's officer has sent him to the rear, with a signed order, to requisition some needed supplies. The military police arrested him, called the note a forgery, and shot him for desertion. His commander only found out about the NCO through second-hand sources.

OK, last German story (I can blame junior, he brought up the SS).

So many years ago, I'm a lowly schlub in a hoity-toity quasi-academic institution with lots of high-end personalities. Among the programs was a Soviet studies program. There was a "fellows' dining room", very nice, library basically, with a nice lunch. Would eat there after the Soviet program had their noon-time discussions.

So there was this one older academic at lunch one of those days, German immigrant, clipped Prussian accent like Col. Strasser in "Casablanca". He and some other of the Russki-focused academics were arguing some inside-baseball issue involving Soviet studies funding, or something.

The guy kept saying (again, Col. Strasser) "zee triple SS". A few of the others would stop, smirk, and then resume. He kept saying it, and hilarity ensued. He meant to say "triple A, double S" for the Amer. Assoc. for Advancement of Slavic Studies. But this emphatic, arresting "zee triple SS!" kept coming out of his mouth.

With his accent, the others could barely contain themselves, even as they were trying to stay angry the point at issue. Memorably funny.

There have been a number of occasions over the last quarter-century when the fiancee and I have been apart for over a month. When we get back together again, there is always some awkwardness -- some hesitation and privacy issues -- which we get over in a day or so and continue as usual. Some sort of "Displacement Activities" [it's a thing, really -- look it up] tend to help us get through that adjustment. So I'm only half-joking with the mini-golf -- doing something mindlessly amusing with the opportunity to randomly bump-into each other allows the gears to mesh....which only makes things better once you're synchronized.

I actually know this book very well. As a wee lad it was - by chance - the very first adult thriller novel that I ever read. We were going on a long vacation drive and I was looking for something 'real' to read during the trip so I grabbed this book off the paperback stand at a grocery store since it sounded kinda interesting and action-y.

And it turned out to be a pretty damn good book. Which is why I still remember it so well after 35 years.

The villains were a couple of Soviet agents who used their influence on and sometimes direct control of lefty journalists to spin stories to be pro-USSR/anti-west and/ or just kill them if they were too negative. Most of their influence was through cultural affinity and social networking mixed with some direct ideology-based collusion. Pretty much every journalistic organization in the book was corrupted to some degree.

And along the way it had several subplots involving Soviet-sponsored terrorist group running operations including one where they kidnapped a movie star, and used heroin to control and brainwash her as well as a scheme to abduct a prominent German CEO and lobotomize him. Plus there were a couple very explicit sex scenes - these I studied deeply like a focused rabbinical student. :-)

It was only years later that I realized what a unusual circumstance it was that a book with such a right-wing point of view ever got published given the real pro-Soviet sympathies of the lefty publishing world. If only I'd kept my paperback copy....

Just be gentle with yourselves, especially in the early going. There will be time for fierce, but getting in-synch a bit before pouring on the gas might be prudent.

A lifetime ago, I attended a meeting in SF. It was a highly technical gathering that had to do with certain possible applications of electronic systems to address certain complex real-world situations. Among the attendees were a couple of spooks, just to give you the flavor.

A good deal of the time was devoted to lectures by one of 'our' Polish physicists. He had been 'removed' from Poland before the Soviets consolidated power there.

It was fascinating. The guy started at the upper left-hand corner of a large chalkboard, and was into double integrals before he reached the end of the second line. It was a bit to absorb. Required mental adrenalin to keep pace.

Anyhow, one evening I had dinner with the fellow and fully expected to listen to what he had to say, about *anything*, except, that isn't how it went.

To my astonishment, he wanted to ask me how it was that his theoretical structure might be physically implemented. I was flabbergasted. It took me a few moments to grasp and digest that his work consisted entirely of mathematical theory, and that he had not an inkling of how it might actually be manifested in any physical sense.

It was one of the most interesting dinners I have ever had, and I have no recollection of what was on the menu.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. Published in national trade journals, published on CNN actual channel, Lucianne dot com, several Insty links.

Listed in Who's Who of Professionals, having many major speaking credits, founder of a very large trade association.

With but a High School Diploma.

Oh, and a serious NYSE, Fortune 1000 boardroom background at the Director level.

I've basically thrown my resume in the trash, and just sell roofing now. At 57, and no "credentials", all of the above and $4 will buy me some coffee.

Most interesting! If I had a hat, I'd tip it to you.

My story is different -- but also quite similar.

I have advanced degrees out the yin-yang, from top schools, but they are completely useless and never served the slightest role in my adult life. I may as well never gone to college or gotten any of them.

Like you-ish, I've had a variety of successful -- uh, what's the word here? -- careers, businesses, get-rich-quick schemes, what have you. Not a single one of them had any connection to my college education, really, and no one has ever asked to see my diploma or verify that I went to college at all, because that was irrelevant. All that mattered was real-world performance right now, not some document proving that I could, in theory, perform well.

Yeah, admittedly, my degrees are all in worthless liberal arts topics. Well, learning stuff in general was not worthless, but the precise topics of my major were indeed worthless.

The role college served in my life was real-time training on how to write well, voluminously and fast, and to be able to bullshit my way through an essay on any topic. The topic itself? Meaningless. The skills to fake it: priceless.

Another hilarious side-effect of college is that I started businesses at an extremely young age to pay for my education (never have any family help or financial aid), and by the time I graduated, those winging-it seat-of-the-pants businesses had put me in a position where I could practically already retire! Which rendered the whole education thing an ironic joke.

Life is funny.

481 We went from being bombed to being chickens because of gutless and misdirecting Republicans (and I blame GWB mainly as he first perpetrated the "Islam is a religion of Peace" nonsense), lying traitorous Democrats/Progressives (which are always on the lookout for ways to destroy the Free US and includes the Press) and the infiltrators allowed in and setup by the preceding, such as CAIR and other such propaganda organizations.

And also because Americans have been feckless, gutless pussies, afraid to speak their mind for fear someone's feelings will be hurt.

And here we are.

I knew where we were going when couldn't/wouldn't prevent the Muslims from infesting Ground Zero. And we took a decade to replace the Towers. Then the idiots failed to take on the main cause of Islamic terrorism; Iran and left the entire ME up for grabs with Democrats in charge. Even if Obama hadn't been elected, we were going to see all sorts of shit happen in the ME that wouldn't be to our advantage.

And now we're back to having a circus for an election.

Let's hope it's not a draw again at least.

I tell the Democrat party off when they ask for money. and I figure I can vote for a loser to run against the R candidate

When Mrs H was failing, she talked to a chaplain in those last days, and the chaplain relayed part of the conversation to me. The context is that we lost our first child shortly after childbirth as she died from hyaline membrane disease after a few days of fighting for her life. Mrs H told the chaplain that she was not afraid to die because at last she would get to hold her precious daughter in Heaven as she had never been able to while here on earth.

I'll treasure that story until my dying day and only hope I get to see both of them again!

I'm off to try to get another hour of sleep!
