Unified Washington DC Cartel Passes Nuke Deal Over the Objections of the American People

Well, guess that House plan I wrote about yesterday really would have stopped he deal -- because McConnell and the boys, naturally, refused to entertain it.

They insisted on having the straight vote they conspired to lose to make sure they give Iran their nukes and the Donor Class gets its new trading partners.

Here's the vote: they all voted in favor of it. Yes, all of them, because they all knew this had been prearranged months ago.

This last vote was just the last act of Failure Theater.

To hell with them all.

16 I wonder if the mullah's will ask Obama to ceremonially press the "launch" button on the ICBM they'll have pointed at D.C.?

No? Then certainly, Boehner or McTurtle would gladly handle the chore, all while bitching about how hard they're having to fight against Tehran.

It is this fecklessness which puts me more on the side of Trump, even though I think he's rude, crude and mannerless when it matters.

I'll take the bad manners if it helps to muck out the Augean Stables which lies inside of the vaunted beltway.

Either a "Trump" will clean it out, or an Iranian ICBM will, sooner or later.

34 spypeach, #9:

It's amazing what people can rationalize: They (the Iranian govt) don't even want nukes; they wanted a big bargaining chip. Or, OK, they want nukes, but for reasons of national pride (this program started under the Shah), not to actually use them. They wouldn't be so crazy. Under the bluster they're actually fairly rational. They don't want to be pariahs anymore.

And, of course: We never were going to stop them from getting nukes if they really wanted them, so we may as well get the best deal we can, figure out to contain them, and hope for the best.

None of the above is an endorsement. This deal makes a nuclear exchange more likely.

So, will Iran go nuclear immediately after the agreement expires, or before then? And, will they actually declare, or just sort of let be the worst-kept secret since Israel's nuclear capability?

77 I've been thinking about the rationale for this deal and the common consensus that the Establishment supports it because their business interests support it but I don't think that is the reason. Businesses in Europe are going to benefit a lot more from this deal than American businesses and in turn Chinese/Russian companies are going to benefit a lot more than European businesses; Russians by selling military hardware and the Chinese through financing capital projects for natural resources. Sure, American investment banks will profit, and I guess any profit is fine if you know the political class is firmly supportive of you instead of voters, but if that is the case, if the United States will normalize relations with any country for a nickel (like we're doing with Cuba for a penny), then why isn't the Establishment and moneyed interests urging Congress to normalize relations with Russia, which has a larger population, more wealth, and greater access to both the European market (for manufactured goods, energy and natural resources) and immediate access to the Chinese market (primarily for energy).

Far more money would be made investing in Russia than in Iran; the cultural barriers are far lower meaning it would be easier to accept Russia as the neutral party and Iran as the enemy instead of the Political Class telling us the exact opposite - that Iran is now our partner and Russia is still our enemy. Even if you take into account former Cold War animosity and Russian aggression in Eastern Europe - how is that a problem when the Political Class thinks Americans will overlook the Iranian Revolution and Iran destabilizing the entire Middle East through their proxies?

There has to be something other than corporate profit at play here for the Uni-party Washington Establishment because I don't think business interests are behind the support for this treaty at all - and if they are it is not profit motive.

100 I really think it's precious how Ace keeps thinking that "the American people" have an position on Iran at all. Sure, there is polling data about what they think if asked directly, but you can get polling data on any issue. What is important is when faced with a series of possible issues, where do they rank this?

Not high.

Jobs. Economy. Health care. Schools.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't care about Iran. I'm just saying that they don't.

The folks in DC understand that and have voted accordingly. Furthermore, there is not a statistically-significant percentage of Republican primary voters that will decide their vote on this issue, either. It is always pocketbook issues and will always be pocketbook issues.

Unfortunately, Israel is too scared shitless to do anything. Israel knows that if they attack Iran (and especially if they attack it the way they will have to to get rid of iran's nuke program) then the EU and Barky will come down on Israel like a ton of bricks and immediately institute sanctions, embargoes and, perhaps, even a blockade. This is what Barky has been trying to instigate the whole time of his illegitimate tenure - to force Israel to take action to then use as ammunition to turn the whole West against Israel and kill it once and for all. The Euros, of course, have always hated Israel and have been itching to use any excuse to destroy the place.

This was the plan from the beginning with Barky. Make Israel take out Iran and then use that "war crime" as the pretext for taking out Israel. It's been clear from 2008. And Israel is too scared to step into that morass.

172 That video comes from a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado"

which just happens to have an appropriate song for exactly this circumstance-

"As Someday It May Happen"

which is sung by Ko-Ko, The Lord High Executioner.

Here's the song itself:

Every dollar of tax you have paid and will ever pay to the Federal government in your entire life, along with all the taxes ever on everyone reading this, will now be sent directly to the mullahs of Iran.

That is what is euphemized in the deal as "aid to Iran".

Think about it.

Civil disobedience, anyone?"

I'm taking it to the streets as soon as the jihadeegees start to arrive here. I'll support a national strike if one gets called and waste even more time on the computer.

Jeb Bush just was on Hannity. Rather than give his normal blow job to a GOP hump, Hannity actually asked the governor some real questions. First, Bush wouldn't answer directly about shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood. Jeb's refusal to say one way or another is a big, fat "yes." No surprise there. Then Bush said we should take in jihadeegees but tried to be coy about it. Hannity actually pushed him a bit and, for him in an interview with any Republican, kind of disagreed.

184 Hi Ace, longtime lurker first time writing a comment.

I wanted to say this, I spent the last 2 years on the hill working for a rep from the midwest before moving back home to be with my now wife. I think the real issue here is Fox News.

Most members of congress read a little bit of the papers (WaPo/Politico/the Hill) and then get the rest of their news from Fox News.

Since 2012 when Romney lost, Fox has been trending to the left. Not egregiously so, but enough that they are no longer in tune with the average GOP voter across the country. (This is one of the reasons the Megyn Kelly comments didn't destroy Trump a lot of grassroots people aren't huge fans of some of the things she says).

Because of this disconnect, I honestly think McConnell and the rest of Senate Leadership doesn't understand the true frustration with how they are handling this whole situation. Fox News (was) giving them rave reviews for 'governing' and 'doing the job they went to DC to do' meanwhile people in Ohio, New Hampshire, SC, Iowa and what-have-you are starting to move to the let it burn side of the fence.

I don't have much data to back me up on this, but I do go out bar hopping a lot and talk to people about politics and I've never seen the amount of raw anger that is spewing forth. Trump is going to hit 40% by the end of the month.

Not to get into the "better or worse" debate, but Senators' constituents are supposed to be their states. The people are represented byt heir ... representatives. It has nothing to do with accountability. It has to do with what interests they are supposed to be serving and whether that makes the federal government operate better. There's really no advantage to having both houses of Congress being people's representatives. The states have no voice in the law-making in Washington and that is a problem.

The basic idea, at least, is that the members of the State legislature personally know the Senator they are electing/appointing, most likely having worked with them in legislature or other State government functions. And the Senator is answerable to the much smaller body of the legislators, theoretically increasing their individual influence on the Senator.

The end result may very well be the same if the Senators are honorless thieves. But let's take a contrarian look: why shouldn't the Senators be appointed by the State legislature? Why should both houses be popularly elected? What purpose then do the two houses serve?

322 soothsayer it truly is amazing ... we elected Hussein, and there are 20 other bullet points beyond yours ... like Church of God damn America, that praised Farrakhan, black liberation theology that was anti-white, basically a version of Marxism. And his mentor was a card carrying communist, and Jarrett's daddy also ... and those two now run the US.

But it was coming at least since the 60's with John Lennon singing imagine there are no borders, or the KKK Democrats suddenly becoming the civil rights leaders.William Buckley observed them taking our campuses, and they took Hollywood and our media, but we claim to have won the cold war. They just all moved here, and the KGB joined organized global crime.

But that's getting a little dark ... the question is, how do we change the tide? America is awakening, but our political/donor class still owns us. So Trump at least owns the message ... breaking the front line, establishing a beachhead is first.

But I'm no strategist ... it's just why I consider Trump, especially as I see Walker flail, and everyone else pretty weak. Trump has money and fame ... which is like an invading force. Maybe like us allied with Russia in WW2, idk. But we are at war.

335 let me repeat: in the original system, most (if not all) states had an assembly based on population (like the House of Reps) and a senate based on counties. This meant that a few very populous counties (eg, the five boroughs of NYC and the counties of a few other NYS cities) would not be able to vote in whatever they wanted (sales tax on everyone to pay for big city mass transit.)
If we still had that arrangement, letting the states appoint their US Senators would (ok, might) make sense, but at this point, you would probably get the same sort of US Senators you're getting now.

I'll support Trump if I decide he'll be able to clean up the worst half of the crap we have to deal with now.

That is a potential outcome, I agree. But I think that speaks more to the caliber of persons elected to State office than a fundamental flaw with the system.

Also would like to point out that the Senators we have now that are popularly elected aren't doing a bang-up job of being responsive to their constituency or acting honorably in discharging their duties of office and upholding their oaths. So yeah, in the present world, probably not a whole lot of difference how the scum makes it to the cesspool in DC.

If we had kept State-appointed Senators longer, the Federal government would likely not be nearly as powerful with respect to the States.

So many people have these weird romantic notions of how the system works.

In practice, what was happening was that votes for state legislatures were proxy votes for Senate. The Lincoln-Douglas debates? They were debates for who would be Senator from Illinois (Lincoln lost) but they weren't direct, they were meant to convince people to vote for the party that each one was from.

Electing a Senator was the biggest thing they did.

BTW, this is related to the Supreme Court. We need to elect the court because they are not in any way independent. Our elections for Senate and President are often tainted by which judges they will nominate and confirm.

If he wins, we lose, because at best he isn't qualified, and at worst, he turns out to be another liberal Dem, like his previous positions suggest he is. Or he just creates havoc by being an incoherent, narcissistic clown.

America is looking to maintain liberty and Christian foundations, not looking to conquer and blame minorities. It seems almost an inverse of the rise of the third reich.

If you want to talk about "we lose", that has happened with both Democrats and GOP. "lose less" is not a win.

So it's time to put the GOP out of its misery. Voting Trump will do that.

After that? Time to build from the ashes. Maybe Trump will aid that objective, maybe not. But GOP has not, and will not.

What is more likely to happen is that the state Legislatures appoint some senior figure to the Senate, who will then have the Federal Government take on all the revenue generation and regulation, and letting the state Legislators give out all the free s**t while pushing the blame on Washington for any negatives regarding taxation and welfare. If the people get too pissed, the legislature does a *tsk*tsk* and appoints the next senior figure for a six year holiday in Washington.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. That's exactly what the NORKs did after Clinton's "historic agreement. Then, because everything was somehow changed, the previous agreement didn't matter and they've been playing us ever since. The only difference is the NORKs had to worry about the US troops in South Korea (giggle, snort) while Tehran has to worry about Israel seeing that and saying, "It's time".

The sarcasm is noted and warranted. They're all liars and scoundrels. As you undoubtedly know, the Framers knew this and tried (but sadly failed) to arrange the system in such a way to create competing interests and internal tension in so that it would be harder for one faction to run away with things. Having the Senators appointed by the States was a part of that plan. It didn't and doesn't make people better or worse.

For the most part, people are just as bad now as they were then.

Nip, see you're still here, somebody might have already covered this, but you DO realize that both Aus. and NZ have normal, er, harsh immigration procedures, right? Aus. even advertizes nearby in foreign languages to the effect of "don't even think of trying to sneak in" - and then uses its military and other assets to enforce its borders. And deports those it catches without hesitation (that is, like every country in history, save for the US in the last 30 years).

Just thought you should know you're flirting with moving to a couple 'a fascist countries, that's all. Oh and BTW if you do go, since you can't take your shootin' irons, I'd be happy to keep them for you. As I recall you have a few I'd like ....

JPS: last event I attended like the one you describe was (my gawd) a full decade ago, different topic (Iraq). It was surreal. The two main panelists and most of the audience were so out of touch with reality (i.e. so besotted with the fantasy world of NPR and Beltway idiocy) that the Polish dep. chief of mission, who was there, stood up and delivered a fairly withering and humiliating lecture to the panel and audience. The panelist on the end, who was typically the principled libertarian guy at such things, was so shaken up by the idiocy he was hearing that he "broke character" and basically echoed the Polish diplomat's comments.

It was hilarious. And scary, and frightening. The default mindset of Beltway types actually working in the field was nothing short of delusional.

Good point, but the Norks didn't do it right away. They probably began cheating in short order, but they tested almost twelve years after the Agreed Framework went into place. That's why I hold out the theoretical possibility that the Iranians might actually wait this thing out, use the billions for missile development and unconventional warfare, and resume nuclear work afterward. Are the billions of dollars worth pretending to toe the line just for awhile? I think they'd rather take the money, go nuclear and yell SUCKERS! but I never would have guessed the Norks would take til 2006.

Ah yes, the whole get in the fetal position and kiss your ass goodbye drill. I didn't get that for nuclear bombs, but I got it for tornados. I'm pretty sure that's their solution for every school crisis, huddle under your desk and cower in fear.

It was things like that that taught me at a young age that the world is ran by asshats.

I remember marching around long winding hallways during fire drills and thinking, I'll go along with this now since it's just a drill, but if there's ever an actual fire they can go fuck themselves and I don't care if I get detention. Every room in most every school had an outside wall full of low windows, which is a sensible design. In the event of a fire or other emergency they want us to line up single file like ducks and march slowly and calmly through the burning halls? Fuck that I'm out the window.

School shooter scenario... everyone cower under your desk in the fetal position kissing your ass. Fuck that I'm out the window. I'll take the detention (if the teachers make it out) I'll be down the block at Burger King.
