There was no FBI led investigation of possible felonies back then, and the Holder DoJ wasn't going to indict anyone lying to Congress. If Clinton testifies she runs a high risk of incriminating herself. Now maybe she'll decide to play the Oliver North gambit and hope her testimony makes it impossible to be tried anywhere. If that is the case it becomes a game of chicken. Who blinks first, Clinton or Gowdy? Because Gowdy might want to withdraw the invitation if it starts to look like her testifying might hinder prosecution.

They can give him immunity and require him to testify, but that doesn't mean they'll get anything useful out of him. He'll have lots of memory lapses ("I can't recall") when it comes to the specifics of who gave him what instructions, he'll confess to a few minor infractions (but it was all his doing, and nobody else's), and he'll insist that Hillary never did anything but tell him to obey the law at all times. We all know how this goes, because we've seen this play before.

It reminds me of the Iraq war, when they'd always find a child's toy in the rubble to photograph, and if they couldn't find one they'd place one (and it would be obvious, because they'd use a clean undamaged toy).

90 Yesterday's Daily Mail pictures of refugees, a.k.a. asylum seekers appeared, to be majority young men of military age.

When one's country faces an existential threat, it's only common sense that one should flee rather than defend the country or join the rebels in an attempt to overthrow an oppressive government.

If we learned anything from the Vietnam war, it's that. When faced with conscription into an unpleasant war, flee to a third country to make a better life for yourself and your family rather than face an uncertain future. It worked well for the democrats who control the US in this timeline.

144 Thanks for the good words MPPPP. The build up, well that is the noir influence I could say plus wanting people to meet the characters before any bullets flew.

I am working on a sequel of course. Won't be a purely first person POV this time. Here is the first draft of the opening.

"Make haste Ptolemy!"

Slim and exotically beautiful Artacama stood guard at the mausoleum's entrance, fearful that the guards her estranged husband had placed would discover them in the act. Behind her, Ptolemy and his helpers struggle in a darkness barely relieved by two torches. There is a grating sound of stone moving against stone. She prays to the supreme god of her native land Ahuramazda and also chief god of this land Amun-Ra for protection while also asking Anubis to understand what has to be done.

Behind her there is another more solid sounding thud as the covering stone contacts the stone floor and makes the whole room tremble. Her hand clutches at the door lintel as she strains to hear anything. The sound of boots slapping pavement and the jingle of armor is what Artacama fears. Instead she hears nothing except Ptolemy's men and her own rapidly beating heart, it seems her prayers are being heard.

"Do we take it all with us?"

Artacama turns and stops in awe. Alexander of Macedon's linen wrapped body is laying on the floor but it is all the gold gleaming in the flickering torchlight that threatens to mesmerize her. The quantity and variety of treasure is staggering, but she also remembers who did this. Her husband, gripped with a desire to make his own empire by stealing Alexander's body, had done this profanity. "No, only Lord Alexander's body. He deserves his wishes to be honored. Put everything else back in the sarcophagus and close it up again."

Post partum depression.

My sister had her so-wanted baby girl fetus strangle on the umbilical cord at 8-1/2 months. She had to carry the dead fetus to term. She ended up in and out of a psychiatric hospital for about 6 months.

I admit that in the case of the Bavarian schoolgirls told they couldn't wear short skirts to school because that might offend* the Muslim "migrants" being housed nearby, I sided with the kids. The "right" to self-expression is more real than the "right" to move somewhere and force your religion on the natives.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter came down hard during a training exercise around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Capt. Ryan Elizabeth Alvis said in a statement.

Alvis said the name of the dead Marine would not be released for 24 hours.

One of the injured Marines was in serious condition. The other eight Marines suffered injuries that were not considered serious, Capt. Kendra Motz, a base spokeswoman, said Thursday morning. Their names have not been released.

Alvis said a number of the injured were taken to the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune. Others were taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville and one was sent to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. There was no other breakdown on how many of the injured went to which hospital.

274 Martin O'Malley's call for more Democratic presidential debates at the party's summer meeting last week may have been the loudest, but it was neither the first nor the last.

A growing number of party activists, from New Hampshire to Iowa, are voicing concern about the Democratic National Committee's plan to hold six debates over all, with only four coming before the first four states finish voting. The party fears a lower number will of debates will diminish its ability to drive the discussion as the Republican contest, led by Donald J. Trump, dominates the news, and that a flabby process will leave the ultimate nominee unprepared for the general election.

The timing of the New Hampshire debate, sandwiched between the Hanukkah and Christmas holidays, has particularly rankled activists in the state, who have openly protested the decision.

Well, true. Since there is not "incrimination" in a civil proceeding, the right not to self-incriminate does not apply.

But going before a senate committee can be the beginning of a criminal case. Therefore, his choice not to show means we cannot (officially) make any inferences about why.

Not even the bloodthirsty goombahs running Mafia's Murder, Inc. back in the day could completely dispose of evidence and escape detection and prosecution, yet we're supposed to believe Bill and Hill orchestrated the deaths of dozens of people without leaving a shred of hard evidence? And that all of Arkansas LE and prosecutors and judges werein on the fix?

The Clintons are bad people, sure enough, but I just can't buy into any of that--well, okay, maybe Vince Foster. And then there's Ron Brown, of course.

...forget I said anything.

346 Put me some f'n knowledge, because I only vaguely remember the details: doesn't the House have a jail? And can't they toss people in it, no matter what Chinless Holder says?

Getting into my own personal WABAC machine (which doesn't work very well), I think it's a difference in what happens down the road.

If the House throws her in their own jail, all she has to do is testify (even if she pleads the 5th to every question) and then they have to let her go. A criminal prosecution can keep her in jail even after she testifies.

I think.

365 The Clintons have been getting away with outrageous and felonious stuff for the entire time they singly or collectively have held public office.

True story: I was doing IT consulting in New York City, in 1992 when Clinton was running for office and the bimbo eruptions were a thing. I remember remarking to some people over drinks who I knew for an actual fact were ardent registered Republicans:

"Beat the rush, hate the Clintons now."

I got immediate push back to the effect that the Clintons seem so nice and even though they were Democrats, they were a new breed of Democrats, etc, etc. I explained to them that I lived in a part of Oklahoma close to Arkansas and that I knew for a fact that the Clintons were not new anything, just typical old style Southern Democrat pond scum. No one believed me--cynical New York and New Jersey folks were unable to believe that mere Arkansas hicks could be that corrupt. I was back in NYC city and met those same folks for dinner after the 96 election and asked them if they believed me now.

430 The open wound of Asia. China resents that they never defeated the Japanese -- the United States did.

China still thinks there is "unfinished business" with Japan, since they never shamed the country that ravaged and shamed China in the 1930s and 1940s.

The phrasing of the epilogue shown at the end of the movie Ip Man is pretty hilarious, if you haven't seen it. Good movie, but very....Chinese... in its approach to the Second Sino-Nipponese War.

Posted by: Grey Fox at September 03, 2015 10:02 AM (bZ7mE)

Pretty much every Chinese movie these days includes some anti-Japanese message.

They are clearly preparing their population for war with Japan.

Even a movie like "Running on Karma" which is advertised as a kind of light romantic thriller-

turns very dark and preachy with SPEECHES!!!! about how even those who seem like good people cannot escape the karma on the souls from their past lives and should be punished-

directed toward the Japanese.

It's gotten ridiculously worse since China took over Hong Kong and the Hong Kong film industry.

And now, with Hollywood in their pocket, I guess it will be all Chinese pre-war propaganda all the time.

I just hope the Japanese have nukes and keep building their defense forces.

They've been good allies but King Putz will leave them to hang.

439 I agree that taking the fifth pretty well guarantees you'll be assumed to be guilty, but there's another reason to do so. Mob boss Joseph Bonano explains in his book that they would routinely just take the fifth on every question possible, even to the point of being nailed for contempt of court, because of how lawyers work.

It might seem like a meaningless, simple, and safe question that you answered, but once you have answered that question, any question related to and tied to that you can no longer take the 5th on.

So that question "do you work at Bigg's apartment store" might seem safe to respond to, but if the lawyer then builds on that with a reasonable series of related questions to how you were there on the night of the theft, then you might find yourself in trouble you can't get out of.

So while the guy might not be guilty of treason or sharing state secrets, etc, he might be guilty of something else he'd rather the prosecutors didn't dig up. And he doesn't want to end up being Scooter Libby for the Clintons.

470 We substantiated the second allegation that pending ES records included entries for individuals reported to be deceased. As of September 2014, more than 307,000 pending ES records, or about 35 percent of all pending records, were for individuals reported as deceased by the Social Security Administration. However, due to data limitations, we could not determine specifically how many pending ES records represent veterans who applied for health care benefits. These conditions occurred because the enrollment program did not effectively define, collect, and manage enrollment data. In addition, VHA lacked adequate procedures to identify date of death information and implement necessary updates to the individual's status. Unless VHA officials establish effective procedures to identify deceased individuals and accurately update their status, ES will continue to provide unreliable information on the status of applications for veterans seeking enrollment in the VA health care system.

473 Not a smidgeon of classified data:

A review last month by Reuters of previously released Clinton emails found 30 email threads that the State Department has marked to show they include information shared in confidence by foreign government officials, from prime ministers to spy chiefs.

U.S. government regulations examined by Reuters say this sort of information, whether written or spoken, must be classified from the start, and handled through secure, government-controlled channels.

The Clinton-Mitchell correspondence is one of 57 email threads found by Reuters in the latest batch of emails released on Monday that the State Department has marked as including the same type of information.

524 Ok, so, while waiting for entertaining content I did a little research (very little). It was confusing that our dear asylum seekers who wanted to get to Germany were in Budapest. So I looked at map and it all became very clear.

Syrian Christians fleeing Militant Islam took shelter in Turkey until they could get on the Orient Express at Istanbul where they would transit Bulgaria, Serbia, and arrive at the Gates of Vienna. All they would need then was a westbound connection and once past Vienna, they would be in Germany. Makes perfect sense.

Then I noticed that it was only a modest float from Carthage to Malta, and with a short swim across the Straits of Messina it would then be a simple bus ride to Bristol.

So why have we not heard about Hannibal crossing the Straits of Gibraltar? Can his elephants not get clearance from animal quarantine? Is that what is delaying his advance across the alps into Rome?

It's not like this is difficult. It has all been done before. What's the problem?

MMmm, not sure why we are celebrating the ignoring of contract law. From what I understand from legal eagles, the question is whether the judge followed the collective bargaining agreement of the players and owners, not the merits of the case. The CBA gives Goodell the right to suspend for violations of league rules. The judge just said no to the suspensions, while leaving in place the fine and draft pick losses of the Patriots.

Those same legal eagles(who may be wrong) feel that the NFL will immediately appeal and Mr.Federal Judge is on shaky ground.

Back in the old days, boxers would wrap their hands with gauze and tape their hands with the heaviest medical tape available. There was actually a brand of 'medical' tape manufactured with the specific purpose of loading the gloves as much as possible without disqualification. Even the slightest additional weight would have a slight but appreciable effect on the impact of the blows and give an advantage to those using it. Was that cheating? You bet, but it was hairline borderline and thus not enough for disqualification.

Same thing here. Maybe what was done wasn't illegal. I don't care about football, either. But it was unethical and unsportsmanlike.

Drudge says "feminists" are mad at whoever does the Kermit puppet because his new pig girlfriend puppet is "young and thin".

Seriously? People actually are trying to make a pig puppet into a political issue?
-------------

The feminists in question have their pantsu in a bunch because the young and impressionable Youth Of America will learn the following lesson. To wit: if one's live-in "fiancee" becomes a fat abusive self-indulgent harpy, one can kick the pig to the curb and get a younger, thinner, and nicer version.

The funny thing is in "The Muppets Take Manhatten" Piggy got Kermit to the altar. Then in the Nineties after Henson kicked it Jim Henson Studios hit the reset button and Piggy got her feminist lifestyle and didn't need no frog in her life...unless he wanted to follow the romcom script, give in, and be part of it, of course! But it's the 21st century now, and Kermit is freed of the need for commitment. Tough luck, pig.

Everything is based on public pressure rather than defined violations and penalties. Maybe this will spur them on to a more structured code.

604 Michelle Obama chose to make her focus as FLOTUS the diet, weight, and fitness of children. By doing this, especially her quest to end the "child obesity epidemic" she invites people to evaluate her diet, fitness and weight. That is just natural - would people to criticize the host of "The Biggest Loser" if she weighed 250 lbs? Of course they would.

What Salon conveniently forgets is that Laura Bush got all kinds of guff with her focus as FLOTUS, reading and literature. Authors took great pleasure in refusing to attend her book festival or declined personal invitations from Laura because they hated her husband. Authors used to sniff that they didn't want Bush to select their book for his vacation reading.

Every FLOTUS gets criticism, some of it solely based on peoples' feeling for her spouse's politics. That's life.

The article about it I read last week indicated that the SC and VA GOP leaders pushing this thought this was a super-clever way to keep Trump off the ballot. See, they figured he would balk and provide them a reason to do what they wanted: exclude him from their state's primary.
So, not about loyalty so much as stupid GOP games.

It's not a legally binding contract or anything. If Trumps smart, he'll make it contingent on SOMETHING, then if he does want to run 3rd party he'll say "well, I only agreed to sign this if you agreed to support me. You didn't, so the agreement is null and void."

It's the fault of whoever brought up Lil Wayne and rotten teeth. It stunk up the thread in a serious way.

Bagpipes are awesome and will make the hair on your neck stand up.

Almost seems that Amazing Grace was specifically written for them.

Amen. Plus, if you listen to Scotland the Brave on bagpipes and don't want to pick up your claymore and start slaying Englishmen, you're completely dead inside.

749 992 Perot runs

1994 Newt and Co win huge. And if I do recall correctly Newt and Co was kind of conservative, no?

And what Perot did was shift the conversation. Prior to 1992 nobody really talked about deficits. Within a few years of Perot's candidacy we had a balanced budget.
Posted by: HUCK / AKIN 2016

The budget was balanced primarily because the Cold War ended. Also, Clinton got through a massive tax hike.

Ross Perot is not why we had a surplus in the 90s.

Also, Ross Perot wanted to put a massive gas tax in order to balance the budget, so I don't see that as a conservative solution to our budget problems as Democrats basically talk the same game of massive tax hikes in order to balance budgets.

750 741 Just like "bandos" reference an abandoned house. Now typically thats a house where people use drugs, but I suppose in certain contexts it could be a foreclosed house that a rapper wishes to invest in and flip.

___________

Yo, yo, yo. Check out that bando, yo. If I can get a 2.5% APR mortgage and rent it out at $1200 a month, I can easily get a 10% return on my investment....yo.

751 727 I know,Allen, everyone's dropping like flies around here. We have to get a handle on these sudden and mysterious deaths before it claims Maetenloch or Ace. I won't be able to handle that if it comes to losing one of them to this plague

__________

He's not THE reason, but he certainly shifted the discussion towards deficits and over spending.

Posted by: HUCK / AKIN 2016 at September 03, 2015 12:04 PM (0LHZx)

755 It's as simple as that. I'm sick of voting AGAINST stuff, and would like to vote FOR something. If no one is going to be worth voting FOR, then I'm just rooting for injuries and enjoying the game.

I voted for a smaller, less intrusive and less expensive government that obeys the Constitution always, and a growing economy with a diversity of opportunity for all.

I voted against out-of-control spending, political pandering to radical, leftwing fringe groups, an activist judiciary, and idiot politicians who believe in the AGW Hoax.

So far, I'm batting -1.000. I haven't gotten one fucking thing I've voted for or against.

I will say I'm a little optimistic that Illinois and Maryland both threw out the Democrats over taxes.

Totally disagree.

Note, as soon as Ross Perot was no longer a threat to the two party Monopoly on power... they got rid of Newt, and Washington went back to its normal overspending ways.... and it was done by BOTH parties.

758 Almost seems that Amazing Grace was specifically written for them.

That was sorta my point. You're right. AG nearly brings me to tears every time I hear it. I can't watch the movie Backdraft when they play it.

IIRC, AG wasn't adapted for the pipes until the early '70's.

759 He's not THE reason, but he certainly shifted the discussion towards deficits and over spending.
Posted by: HUCK / AKIN 2016

The deficit has been a major topic for decades in American politics. Perot got traction because he was an unusual, colorful figure that spent obscene money on his campaign, but he was basically an FDR Democrat and had Big Government solutions to our problems.

And really, nothing happened from giving Clinton 2 terms in office, we just had a few years where we took in more than we spent, the National Debt was never paid off.

It was worth getting a massive tax hike, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 9/11, etc just to teach Bush Sr a lesson

766 We discuss all things sidebar here right? I'm a lurker, never posted on the "Top Headlines" thread so forgive me if I'm breaking protocol.

The article on Dean Jones says that the Christian Rescue Fund is "a support group for Christians, Jews and others who have been persecuted because of their faith."

The author makes it sound like Mr. Jones was ran some kind of rehab clinic. But it was so much more than that. Dean Jones worked with international organizations and the US government to free oppressed and imprisoned Christians and Jews in other countries. The man did a lot of good.

Just thought someone should point that out.
