Quote of the Day I - Everything Is Now Rapey Rape Or Almost Rape Or Pre-Rape And/Or Regret Rape Along With Of Course Classic Rape-Rape

The pilot survey - initially developed by the Justice Department's Office on Violence Against Women and conducted by Rutgers - generated responses from nearly 11,000 Rutgers University-New Brunswick students. In the report, "sexual violence" has a broad definition that was based on materials developed by the White House Task Force. The definition ranges from remarks about physical appearance to rape and other forms of sexual assault.

The most startling finding in the Rutgers report: Nearly one in four undergraduate women (24 percent) told researchers that they were victims of some form of sexual violence before they ever set foot on campus.

Quote of the Day II

Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherfucker in the world. If I moved to a martial-arts monastery in China and studied real hard for ten years. If my family was wiped out by Colombian drug dealers and I swore myself to revenge. If I got a fatal disease, had one year to live, devoted it to wiping out street crime. If I dropped out and devoted my life to being bad.

-- Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson

Quote of the Day III

Time counts and keeps countin', and we knows now finding the trick of what's been and lost ain't no easy ride. But that's our trek, we gotta' travel it. And there ain't nobody knows where it's gonna' lead. Still in all, every night we does the tell, so that we 'member who we was and where we came from... but most of all we 'members the man that finded us, him that came the salvage. And we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of them that are still out there. 'Cause we knows there come a night, when they sees the distant light, and they'll be comin' home.

The Hillary Precedent

Hillary Clinton likes to point out that she is not the first senior national security official to conduct official business on a home computer system. She's right about that, but the precedent should not give the Democratic presidential front-runner much comfort.

Former CIA director John Deutch was also found to have stored classified documents - including top-secret intelligence - on computers in his homes in Bethesda and Belmont, Mass., leading to an investigation by the CIA inspector general and a criminal investigation by the Justice Department. Deutch was stripped of his security clearance and ended up reaching a plea agreement admitting to his crimes - but was saved by a last-minute pardon from none other than . . . President Bill Clinton.

The parallels between the Deutch and Clinton cases suggest that come January 2017, instead of planning her presidential transition, Clinton may find herself lobbying for a last-minute pardon of her own.

You Can Have Open Immigration Or You Can Have a Welfare State, But You Can't Have Both

  • In 2012, 51 percent of households headed by an immigrant (legal or illegal) reported that they used at least one welfare program during the year, compared to 30 percent of native households. Welfare in this study includes Medicaid and cash, food, and housing programs.
  • Welfare use is high for both new arrivals and well-established immigrants. Of households headed by immigrants who have been in the country for more than two decades, 48 percent access welfare.
  • No single program explains immigrants' higher overall welfare use. For example, not counting subsidized school lunch, welfare use is still 46 percent for immigrants and 28 percent for natives. Not counting Medicaid, welfare use is 44 percent for immigrants and 26 percent for natives.

How to Destroy a City in Five Minutes

I've been almost everywhere in that country more than once. It felt solid. Kick the walls if you want. They won't buckle. It will not come apart like Syria, Iraq or Libya. It was obvious from the very beginning that, post-Arab Spring, Tunisia would not explode in civil war like Syria, rupture into fragments like Libya, or devolve into another police state like Egypt. It sure as hell wouldn't go the way of Afghanistan. That was clear.

"If the Islamists want to Talibanize this place," I said to Sean as he sipped from his glass of Johnny Walker at that delightful restaurant in Sousse, "they'll have to kill half the population in order to do it."

He froze after I said that. I didn't ask what he was thinking at that moment, and I doubt he'd remember if I asked him-this was years ago-but he clearly felt a chill. I felt a chill, too. And I remember what I thought when I felt it: The bastards will probably try.

Crushing Enterprise & Raising Taxes Is Business As Usual For ISIS

Tyler Cowan: A Simple Primer For Understanding China's Downturn

1. You can't invest 45-50 percent of your gdp very well forever.  It's amazing how long China's run has been, but it is over.  The quality of their marginal investments is now low and that means their growth rate will be much lower too.  The low hanging fruit is gone, at least for the time being.  They might later on resurrect some new low-hanging fruit through institutional reform, we'll see if they end up stuck in the middle income trap but right now they are at a sharp discontinuity.

2. There is no simple way to switch to a "consumption-driven" economy without the growth rate both falling and staying permanently lower.  Structural reforms are absolutely called for, but in this context they represent a surrender to a lower rate of growth and thus they are especially difficult to pull off in a politically sustainable manner.

3. The Chinese have been growing at ten percent or nearly ten percent for about thirty-five years.  More than a generation of Chinese is used to treating the risk premium as if they don't have to worry about it.  I shudder to think what economic and also political decisions have been made on that basis.

4. The Chinese economic response to the dwindling of their low-hanging fruit is sharp rather than smooth because there is a sudden revision of expectations, as people realize the risk premium isn't zero after all.  And seeing the others see that causes the new set of beliefs to spread pretty quickly.  That is a very painful process for a macroeconomy, and it is not well captured by simple AD-AS analysis, although of course it has implications for both AD and AS.

How Many Times Has a US Navy Ship Ever Been Attacked By MIGs?

Well at least once - during the Battle of Dong Hoi in 1972.

"MIG coming! MIG coming!" yelled the lookout and seconds later the after deck of the destroyer Higbee was aflame. The North Vietnamese jet dropped a 250 pound bomb onto the deck of the destroyer, wounding four seamen and destroying a gun mount that housed two 5 inch guns.

The U.S. Command said at least three enemy jets attacked an American task force in the Tonkin Gulf off the coast of North Vietnam late Wednesday afternoon. The command said one of the planes was shot down, two enemy torpedo boats were believed sunk and shrapnel from shore battery fire caused minor damage on the cruiser Oklahoma City, the flagship of the 7th Fleet.

Capt. Ronald Zuilkoski, skipper of the Higbee, said the MIG attacked his ship at least twice before the bomb hit the deck. "In the first two passes, bombs fell left and right of the ship," he said, "but on the third try one hit the deck and exploded under the mount. She flew so low over the deck that you could see everything."

Luckily the gun mount was empty, the 12 man gun crew having been ordered out while a round stuck in one of the barrels (hang fire) was being hosed down to keep it from exploding. But three men in the ammunition storage compartment under the mount were wounded. Other men pulled them out as the ammunition began to explode. The exploding ammunition ripped open a large section in the Higbee's left side. Flames and clouds of black smoke from leaking oil engulfed the deck as the crew fought the fire.

Another warning sounded: "Missile! Missile homing in!" "We heard the missile warning, but we had to stay with the fire or we would have lost the ship," said Hull Tender 2nd Class John J O'Brien, 40 of Camden, NJ

How To Carve Your Own Stone Sink

He made it look so damn easy that I had to give it a try. So after investing a whopping $22 in various diamond cut-off blades and dremel accessories from Harbor Freight I attacked a small river stone from the yard over the weekend. And surprisingly the tools worked better than expected. A lot of dust though. And I'll need some bigger blades and some diamond edge sanders to attack a sink-size rock. But it looks doable.

Actually, there's a good probability no points were awarded. The best students would opt for the 6 based on not wanting anyone else to get extra points, and they're doing fine without it.
The slightly less good students would think that 6 points would be the difference between an A and a B.

95 When are people going to learn that the very idea of a consumption-driven economy is what keeps getting us into these messes? There's a fundamental error in the thinking behind it, and that's that wealth is created when you sell something. It's not. Wealth is created when you make something that's worth more than the sum of the parts and labor that went into it. Selling that product is just a wealth transfer.

An economy can't run on wealth transfers forever, because there's natural shrinkage, or attrition as existing forms of wealth decay. Couple that with trade imbalances that see wealth transfers disproportionately favoring overseas producers, and the amount of real wealth in the economy continues to shrink.

Production is the only thing that creates new wealth, therefore the consumption-driven economy is a lie.

96 "'MIG coming! MIG coming!' yelled the lookout and seconds later the after deck of the destroyer Higbee was aflame."

It's good to know that one of the other USN vessels with _Higbee_ nailed the MiG with a Terrier.

But for sheer badassery, pride of place has to go to the _Long Beach_, herself quite badass (first nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser) who while similarly on station off the coast of Vietnam, shot down an NVNAF MiG at the unheard-of range of 65 miles with one of her amazing ramjet powered Talos missiles. Reach out and touch someone.

Now if the entire war had been prosecuted with a similar technological edge and will to win? Very different outcome.

Okay here's a longer snippet:

Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherfucker in the world. If I moved to a martial-arts monastery in China and studied real hard for ten years. if my family was wiped out by Colombian drug dealers and I swore myself to revenge. If I got a fatal disease, had one year to live, devoted it to wiping out street crime. If I just dropped out and devoted my life to being bad.

Hiro used to feel that way, too, but then he ran into Raven. In a way, this is liberating. He no longer has to worry about trying to be the baddest motherfucker in the world. The position is taken. The crowning touch, the one thing that really puts true world-class badmotherfuckerdom totally out of reach, of course, is the hydrogen bomb. If it wasn't for the hydrogen bomb, a man could still aspire. Maybe find Raven's Achilles' heel. Sneak up, get a drop, slip a mickey, pull a fast one. But Raven's nuclear umbrella kind of puts the world title out of reach.

Which is okay. Sometimes it's all right just to be a little bad. To know your limitations. Make do with what you've got.

134 One of the funniest stories I ever heard was from a local character of some repute nicknamed "Red". He was WWII guy, who fought on Okinawa and could tell some tales.

When he got back home, he went wild. I mean bar fights in redneck dives and all that stuff. He was a good fighter, but he did meet his match a few times, and he actually loved to tell about the times he could he ass whipped.

Anyway, one of this favorites stories was picking up some chick in of those bars, drunk off his ass. They were making out in his car and he describes the moment he ran his hands up her leg and "felt them little nuts". He punched "her" in the face and threw it out of the car.

A bunch of other dudes came up, thinking he was beating up a woman and were about to kick his ass. Like Austin Powers, he screamed "That's a man!" Somebody yanked up her skirt for proof. They then let him go and ran off the tranny.

151 I knew about this launch this morning but forgot to set my alarm for it. It was an Atlas V launching a military communications satellite, and it lifted off shortly after 6:00 AM Eastern time. Liftoff occurs just after the 37 minute mark in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTvlloWvXKY

After the solid rocket motors are jettisoned, things start to get interesting. The launch occurred during twilight, so the sky looked dark from the ground, but the rocket and its exhaust plume were lit by the Sun at high altitude. This provides for some spectacular visual effects.

That exhaust plume is present in all launches, but you don't see it during daylight launches because the background sky is bright, and you don't see it during nighttime launches because the Sun is not up. Of course, you don't see it at all when the sky is cloudy.

Here is an amateur video. There are some focusing issues, but it is worth watching. Click on the "Show More" button for a description of what you are seeing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAPAnhaParI

There was a Falcon 9 launch during twilight earlier this year that was just as spectacular.

All rocket launches should be during twilight, in my opinion.

158 Another one of Red's favorite stories was back in his bar hopping days, he used to carry a bottle of whiskey under his car seat, for medicinal purposes you understand.

Someone found out about it, and several times, he'd come out and find that bottle empty. So next time, he gets an empty bottle, pisses in it a couple times to get it full, then sticks that under the seat.

He comes back out, is getting in his car, then Wham! Lights out. Someone whacked him on the head from behind. He wakes up with that bottle on top of him, with the contents poured all over him, face included.

So moral: carefully plan your revenge and think of how your target can react.

Went to a local community fair tonight and the girl handing out the ribbons in the livestock competition was dressed in Daisy Dukes with part of an ass cheek hanging out, and a skin tight top. She looked like a redneck hooker.

Someone explain to me why this is considered appropriate dress and why no other adult involved in this event didn't tell her she wasn't appropriately dressed.

We have an entire generation of oversexed, immodest females entering college and we wonder why 25% of them claim to have experienced sexual violence and why they move onto screaming rape.

When you dress the part, don't be surprised if the other actors keep playing out the scene. Oh, and make sure you get totally hammered in some bar to where you black out.

Yes, get off my lawn. I"m feeling grumpy about the state of womankind in the USA after seeing tons of adolescents and pre adolescents at this fair tonight with shorts up their crack and skin tight t shirts, v neck with boobs hanging out of their purple bras.

And that's not getting in to Obamas illegal EOs. Which would seem to a bigger deal then the bullshit laws I have to deal with every day.

Me: $50 parking ticket because my car was 8 inches from the curb
Obama: Decided on a royal whim to re-write the entire countries immigration law, let millions of new people become legal, and costs the tax payers untold millions.

To me, it would seem that if Obama can do that, then I should be able to park wherever the fuck I want with impunity.

172 That brings back memories. Grandpappy used to like to tell of the time time his brother and him went down to Champaign to see Red Grange play at the UofI. 1920's. Colder than hell. They sat in the car before the game and polished off a pint. Had to take a piss, but didn't dare get out in the cold. So they filled up the bottle and tossed it out the window. A little while later some guy comes by, sees the bottle, looks around, and finally picks it up and pockets it, then walks off.

173 Here's a funny. i was flipping channels earlier today and I came across a reality show, Ice Lake Rebels I think it was called. I happened to catch the phrase "Northwest Territory" before I clicked on so I paused. Gingy's sister lives on an island in the middle of a lake in the NWT. The narrator went on " So and so (name of whoever) is traveling from her home on Vee Lake to barter with her neighbor (Gingy's sister's first name) who lives on an island one lake over".

Sure enough, it was Gingy's sister.

Wild, huh? What are the odds that I'd just happen across the 4 minutes of film that she was in while channel surfing AND recognize enough of the dialogue before clicking on to realize that hey, that's my sister in law.

206 Old Red's war stories could curdle your blood. Some of those guys wouldn't talk, but he would. Just let it all flow out. He had his "7 minutes to live" story about the first time he stormed a beach (somewhere in the Pacific). His Lt, who was also red headed, took a shine to him, and told him, grimly, right before they hit the beach, to make the most of the next 7 minutes, because that's how long, on average, they would live.

Then he would pause, and tell that, after what seemed like an eternity, he checked his watch. 10 minutes or so had passed, and half his unit, including that redheaded Lt, were dead.

He said he remembers, vividly, the face of the first Japanese soldier he killed, up close. Sort of remembers the second one, but it was a blur after that.

And then he notes how he got to enjoy killing 'em after that, and attributed that to his survival. God help me, I loved killin' 'em, he said.

but still fun as shit.

You wanna know what's really funny. We watched the rest of the show, the features folks, who lived on houseboats on various lakes were being presented as risk taking frontier individuals out in the dangerous wilderness because danger! Gingy lived for several years in Yellowknife. "They live on lake boats to avoid municipal taxes, that's it! Yellowknife is the Provincial capitol for Christ sakes! They have grocery stores and everything! These people aren't living a sustenance existence, they're buying Coke at the Co-OP!"

I've been to sister-in-law's island. It's beautiful, but you can drive out to it from town when the lake is frozen in half an hour, and when the lake is liquid it's a 15 minute boat ride to where the car is parked followed by a 10 minute car ride (along the DEADLY INGRAM TRAIL!-Ice Road Truckers) to the heart of Yellowknife.

Plus SIL says that the entire "trade" (couple of bags of fireplace pellets for a full propane tank) was staged for the show.

239 All right, campus free speech lives in Wazzustan. Choke back them words, puppies! Fear the Puma concolor!

From Wiki:
Wazzustan consists of much of Eastern and Southwestern Washington. It's name and territorial boundary was originated by dog worshipers residing in Sealth. It is surmised the term was intended to be derogatory in nature and is meant to imply the occupants are unsophisticated and backward in nature. However, recent research indicates this term came about due to compensation for an inferiority complex suffered by the dog worshipers.

Posted by: Mike in the Hinterlands at September 03, 2015 01:01 AM (DNpio)

254 I have a lot of respect for Neil Stephenson. His first published novel was a rather mediocre college campus comedy... I forget the title, and it's not important, for reasons I'm about to go into...

Stephenson was always a little embarrassed by the existence of this (in his opinion) crappy novel with his name on it. But when he reached the big time as a sci-fi novelist, he saw that his fans were paying ridiculous amounts of money for that crappy out-of-print first novel of his. And even though he was ashamed of that book, he pulled some strings to get it reprinted, as a service to those fans. His thinking was, "I don't want my fans to spend hundreds of dollars on that crappy book. If they really, really want to read it, well, the least I can do for them is arrange for them to be able to buy a reprint at cover price".

290 Cribbed from an online source:

According to CNN, any candidate who ranks in the top 10 between Aug. 6
and Sept. 10 will be included in the prime time debate on Sept. 16. Also
allowed in the main show will be candidates who scored in the top 10
averages of all approved national polls between July 16 and Sept. 10, as
the original criteria released in May stated. This means it is possible
there will be more than 10 candidates on the prime time debate stage.

That answers that. Sort of.

One thing the Trump phenomenon has done is make all these second tier candidates hang on longer than they presumably might have originally, believing they will ultimately get their own time in the limelight at some point.

By this point in 2008, the last time the White House was wide open to candidates from both parties, Tommy Thompson, Fred Thompson, and Sam Brownback had all ended their premature runs for the presidency. Several others were out before Christmas that year, and most of the rest were out right after NH. But neither the 2008 or 2012 fields were as large as this year's group.

I think the CNN kiddie table debate will be the last time we see several of the guys who are running a national election campaign in name only.

Political reporters do it to Dems, I can't see why sports reporters wouldn't.

And let's face it, most of the ESPN female reporters weren't hired because they were outstanding journalists, they were hired because they usually have nice legs, a nice ass, a nice set of cans, are cute, and can suck a dick like a crackwhore looking for her next fix.

325 Serious moral dilemma question for the Horde:

Short version:

I am thinking of gaslighting a moonbat. Should I do it?

Long version:

There a guy I know -- OK, he's the husband of a friend of mine. He thinks he's my friend too, because I am polite to him and I am an all-around nice person. But secretly I hate his guts, primarily because he is an awful, evil, noxious, sanctimonious anti-American extreme leftwing blowhard and asshole.

He's got a vast array of other annoying traits as well, but they are outshone by his apocalyptically repulsive political views.

Furthermore, and most infuriatingly, he is the absolute Emperor of Hypocrites. He violates every ideology he espouses in shockingly flamboyant ways, 24 hours a day.

He's one of those "progressives" who wants everyone else to suffer because of his totalitarian dictates, but they never apply to him.

He rants about how rich people should pay more in taxes -- but he himself is from a wealthy family and brags about cheating on his taxes.

He rails against industrial capitalist civilization, and owns every tech gadget available.

He worships at the Altar of Global Warming, and wants to outlaw oil and cars and airplanes -- but jets around the world like Al Gore on meth.

He moans about "income inequality" and "capitalism," yet lives like a prince.

He sneers at racists who want segregation, but he himself lives in a totally upper class segregated neighborhood (to avoid crime).

Need I go on? Everything you despise about a leftist, he embodies.

Well, I just found out that he has just joined twitter for the first time, and quickly fell into the leftist twitterverse with a vengeance, and retweets every infuriating leftist meme all day long.

And that's where I got my idea. Because he has one big weakness: Like many a leftist, he can't stand be out-holier-than-thou'ed by someone more purely limousine-communist than he. He bristles and acts aggressive when attacked from the right -- but he disintegrates and whimpers like a baby when being attack from the left.

So my gaslighting plan is to do just that:

Create a twitter account with a fictional leftist persona. Join all the correct progressive twitter cliques for a month or so, follow all the right people, tweet all the right things. And after having done this for a while and established my bona fides, to start calling him out on twitter for not being true to his leftist beliefs. To attack his hypocrisy from the left.

I know his psychology -- I know this will destroy him mentally, if done properly.

Yeah, it will likely cause my friend's marriage to break up, but she secretly is looking for a reason to dump him anyway, so I wouldn't feel guilty on that front. She deserves so much better. (She's not like him politically -- she's a "default Democrat," but in truth pretty apolitical, and just humors him.)

But you see, I've never really done anything like this before. I have a petty strict personal moral code -- I never hurt people. Even people I dislike.

So I feel kinda dirty just pondering this plan. But on the other hand, it is so tempting.

What should I do? Gaslight him, or just leave it in the realm of fantasy?

Extra question: Is there any way he could trace my identity through twitter? I wouldn't say anything defamatory or illegal -- I would just needle him, in exactly the way he hates.

Advice?

Second, zombie would be tainted with the moral rot that comes from deciding other people's lives are more or less improved when forced into actions evaluated against zombie's values. Finally, there is the question of outcomes -- if the guy has a nervous breakdown and ends up in an asylum as a public charge, is this an improvement? Actually, there is VERY important info in this regard that I left out of my original post:

This guy is on track to be a "thought leader" and an influential person.

This plan isn't just for my satisfaction. This is basically like some old science fiction time-travel story: "If you could go back in time and prevent the career of [evil dictator], would you do it?"

He is quickly climbing the ranks of progressive think-tanks/activist nonprofits/academia. I can't really go into more detail here, but just think of him as a budding Tom Steyer or young George Soros. He really really wants to impose his vision on humanity, and he is striving for it.

He's not just some random jerk with bad opinions; he's dangerous.

If this was just a personal revenge fantasy, I wouldn't consider it.

But I can see how it would be quite easy to push him over the edge politically. I've seen it happen now twice in the time that I've known him, that he was driven further to the left by being attacked from the left. And not just driven further to the left, but also driven much closer to the edge of madness. Because he begins to espouse things that he himself is uncomfortable with, but he can't say No, because to do so would reveal himself as insufficiently righteous in his social group.

I can see quite clearly how I can drive him to become so extreme that he will enter the realm of wild-eyed maniac, especially when coupled with his mental problems.

Wouldn't take much work. And I think without establishing my persona's leftist credentials, he would just assume (correctly) that I was a conservative troll goofing on him.

The "horde cascade" would backfire and ruin the whole plan. When attacked from the right, he feels sanctimonious and lashes back. When attacked from the left, he crumples into a fetal position.

This gaslighting would be very subtle. To clarify:

By "gaslighting" I mean I will play mind games on him. I will NOT be overtly attacking him. I will be posing as a fellow leftist, and then subtly challenge him on his purity. In a friendly way. But I guarantee it will drive him nuts, because he cannot se his own hypocrisy.

I will not reveal foreknowledge of his hypocrisy: i will stumble into it "unwittingly," and make him feel awful about it.

He will not see me as an opponent, but as his moral superior. That alone will drive him bananas.

What you describe is closer to plan my as well.

Here's a random example:

I know for a fact that guy flies on commercial jetliners all around the world constantly. (He is flying to progressive conferences to give speeches and stuff.) like, more between one and five round-trips per month.

So let's just say that I become his "climate change buddy" on twitter. And then, after a while, I ask him to join me in a mass pledge to not use fossil fuels for a year. Which would be completely impossible for him. So he'd either have to decline taking the pledge, which would make him look like a poseur not committed to his beliefs (which he couldn't tolerate), or agree to the pledge, and then break it and take plane flights anyway and lie about it. Which he also wouldn't really be able to endure.

You see, people like this NEVER get challenged on their hypocrisy. Ever. They think that are absolutely morally impeachable.

The only question is: Can you do this without hurting his wife who is your friend?
Posted by: The Gas Hat

It is indeed the same person.

As for the wife, who is my actual friend:

For real, she is looking for an excuse to break free from him. They are de facto almost separated anyway, because all he ever does is jet around to conferences, and he is never at home, and he totally ignores her, and is often rude and dismissive of her.

If he became an even more crazed political extremist, she'd be relieved, as it would a sign that it was time to break up. She's sick of him anyway, she has said.

I think they'e on track to split whether or not I gaslight him, frankly.

Posted by: cthulhu at September 03, 2015 03:43 AM (3balI)

389 I will say this about borax: that shit works!

I never knew anything about it or tried it, and by chance I came into possession of a box of borax, and tried it in a load of laundry. Although it is not "soap" in any way nor does it contain any soap, it gets clothes clean and make them "snappy" in some indefinable way. And since it's just a natural mineral, I regard it as much safer and less noxious than even plain ol' soap itself.

Now I use borax every time I wash clothes. Sometimes in place of soap entirely!

Speaking as a guy who took geology in college, and works in the field, I am not enamored of "granite" sinks and countertops. First, all that is sold as "granite" is not granite. To a geologist "granite" is a crystalline rock with a fairly narrow range of composition. There are a host of other granitic rocks with a wide range of colors and other properties, and many of them are peddled as "granite" when they are not.

Secondly, and more important for the consumer, most of these rocks appear to be dense and impermeable, but they are not, really. They are composed of discrete grains of different minerals that crystallized from a melt until all the melt was consumed, and the grains stopped growing by butting up against grains of other minerals (or even enveloping them). These grain boundaries are not welded or glued; they are simply an extremely tight mechanical fit, and the rock holds together by the interlocking nature of the grain boundaries. Also, individual grains within the rock may have microporosity due to fractures, twinning planes, cleavage, or inclusions. Result: the "granite" of commerce (true granite included) can be stained, and those stains will penetrate the surface, and once in the rock itself, cannot easily be removed, if removed at all.

What about pink quartzite?

I heard that stuff is harder than granite and much more impermeable. And thus would be better as countertop material.

If one looks at the pink quartzite outcroppings (in the upper midwest, near you), even where a river has been flowing over them for tens of thousands of years, they barely eroded at all.

To me that's natural proof that pink quartzite is hard as hell and would resist any household wear and tear.

And yet as far as I can tell, it's not sold or used for this purpose much at all. Why not?

413 The best revenge I've found is to be patient and try to be where karma strikes.

Your hands are then clean as you can point to out side overwhelming forces being responsible.

This also works on info about enemies. Unless there's a time window, it's always better to wait for the information you need coming around to you naturally.

Then those involved don't realize you were waiting for it and aren't prepared when you use it/confront them with it.

Revenge tastes really lousy cold but you should wait for a while and then warm it up a bit.

Then it can very very tasty. Especially if you have the opportunity to be present when karma hits the fan.

I can certainly believe that, although I think historians are not quite sure whether the Princesse De Lamballe-whose head was put on a pike outside Marie Antoinette's window, was really ripped apart while alive in quite the brutal sexual way it was later described. That might have been propaganda too. And it (The Revolution) was supposed to based on reason and once they got rid of that nasty Christianity things were supposed to improve too. Too bad they had an utter nutcase (Robespierre in charge for so much of the time. Other revolutions while violent are not quite as bloodthirsty.

445 I wish these ancient politicians would just shut the heck up. They either don't know anything or they don't care or they're too addled to make responsible comments.

446 Just read Traczinksi's latest rant against Trump supporters, this time against the awful seventh group that want to burn down the GOP. He ends by saying we should stop trying to be political because emotions have no place in politics. It's about the long game and deal making.

Hey Traczinski: no. I'm not getting out. You have no power over me. And your silly Lecture is tiresome and obviously crap.

Trigger alert, I'm going to do some Fenelon Spoke-style humor here.

459 So went to Cdr Salamander's blog to get keel-hauled, once again, on how much an epic failure the LCS is. Takes almost 900 people pier-side for support, the mine hunter module continues to be a failure, when it lights off the gas-turbines ship becomes a fuel hog on par with a Presidential limo, and it is also so overweight that a torpedo decoy system can't be installed.
