The Age of Obama: Rising Crime; Topless Hookers Rubbing Up on Tykes in Times Square; Cop Assassinations

Via Instapundit, Powerline catches the New York Times in a rare moment of noticing actual news.

The Times:

Murder Rates Rising Sharply in Many U.S. Cities

By MONICA DAVEY and MITCH SMITHAUG

MILWAUKEE --Cities across the nation are seeing a startling rise in murders after years of declines, and few places have witnessed a shift as precipitous as this city. With the summer not yet over, 104 people have been killed this year -- after 86 homicides in all of 2014.

More than 30 other cities have also reported increases in violence from a year ago. In New Orleans, 120 people had been killed by late August, compared with 98 during the same period a year earlier. In Baltimore, homicides had hit 215, up from 138 at the same point in 2014. In Washington, the toll was 105, compared with 73 people a year ago. And in St. Louis, 136 people had been killed this year, a 60 percent rise from the 85 murders the city had by the same time last year.

Law enforcement experts say disparate factors are at play in different cities, though no one is claiming to know for sure why murder rates are climbing.

"Disparate factors" is "expert" nonsense-talk for "I don't want to get into it, as it runs contrary to my partisan political interests."

Meanwhile, Times Square was transformed in the 90s and 00s from a cesspit of porn and jerk-off booths into a vibrant, money-making tourist zone.

You will not be surprised that many on the left have romanticized the knife-point muggings of the old Times Square and whined that we should return to that period of gritty authenticity, abandoning this Disney-fied bourgeois pit of commerce.

Well, they're starting to get their wish, courtesy of Bill DiBlasio.

Susan L. M. Goldman:

We knew DeBlasio would return New York to the 70s. We just didn’t think that return would involve topless women shaking it for tourists' tips. Folks in the y0s were respectable enough to keep that kind of show behind closed doors. Today it isn't just a show, it’s a "social justice movement." This "movement" is defended by feminists, no less, who feel it is a woman’s right to walk around topless in public. Offering to exchange photographs for tips. With pimps hanging over them. Sorry, I mean "bodyguards" "protecting" them in exchange for 30% of their "earnings." Life, liberty and the pursuit of boobs for cash. Seriously it's in the Constitution. Check it out.

Offering to show your breasts for money is a minor form of prostitution, and should be -- actually is -- illegal. Even if you think this should be generally legal -- which I'd fully agree with -- there is a third path here that respects both the sex-worker's desire to sell her body for money and the public's right to not have a hooker's tits shaken in their kids' faces.

In France, prostitution is, as it has long been, perfectly legal, but open, crude solicitation (raccolage) is illegal. That is, you can prostitute yourself, and you can even stand on the streetcorner in areas known for the skin trade in hookerish clothing, but there is a limit as to how overt you can be about your solicitation.

I would say that walking around with your knockers out, asking for money, would be a violation of this sort of law.

I realize New York City doesn't have this law -- but it should, and it should enforce it. If you want to decriminalize prostitution, fine, but at least insist the business be conducted with a reasonable amount of respect for families out sightseeing with their kids. *

Meanwhile, the radical members of #BlackLivesMatter (which may or may not be all of them) are chanting about killing cops and wearing t-shirts glorifying cop killers.

Meanwhile, cops keep being murdered in cold blood.

The "experts" would say, I suppose, that "disparate factors" are responsible for this. Who knows why it's happening. It's all just a mystery that will not admit of further investigation.

* Even accepting arguendo NYC's position that women have the right to expose their breasts, there are many things which are legal as personal actions but subject to state intervention and regulation when they become commercial actions.

And then there are time, place, and manner considerations -- long considered valid restrictions on free speech. Not what you say -- or here, show -- but where and when you can show it.

Sure, I like go-go bars as much as the next man (assuming the next man doesn't particularly like go-go bars), but what goes on inside a private establishment with blacked-out windows is far less of a concern for public morals than if that establishment decided to take its business to the streets.

It bothers me that this is going on in daylight. With these people knowing the Disney store is just a few doors down, and kids are in pilgrimage to that store.

If this were happening after 10 pm at night, I'd shrug and say "That's New York; no big deal to have a little bit of Time Square's famous sleaze back."

But this is happening with kids around.

That bothers me, a lot.

Any Constitutional scholars in the house?

Today, right now, with my eyes I am watching a helicopter skim over the rooftops of Berkeley and Oakland.

It is part of the creepy Obama administration program to "scan" private homes for "radiation."

Here's an article about what is happening:

http://www.berkeleyside.com/2015/08/31/low-flying-helicopter-to-measure-radiation-in-berkeley/

"Berkeley residents may see and hear a low-flying helicopter overhead on Wednesday as part of a federal program focused on measuring radiation levels.

According to a statement published by the city of Berkeley, the helicopter is expected to fly over San Francisco, Pacifica, Berkeley and Oakland between Tuesday, Sept. 1, and Sunday, Sept. 6.

The helicopter is slated to be in Berkeley on Wednesday, in both the morning and afternoon.

According to the city’s statement, the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Energy, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, are partnering on a program “to improve the U.S. government’s ability to detect nuclear and radiological material.”

The program is focused on improving aerial radiological detection, in part by “equipping helicopters with sensors to detect radiation on the ground.” It is called the Airborne Radiological Enhanced-sensor System program."

In essence, they are searching everyone's homes, but remotely from the sky.

Is this legal? Doesn't it violate the Fourth Amendment (no random searches without due cause)?

What if, for example, the helicopter DOES detect unexplained radiation coming from one particular house? Would the government just shrug and do nothing with the information? Then what was the point of the search?

On the other hand, if they DO use the information to kick down someone's door to search the house for the source of the radiation, couldn't a good lawyer claim that the information on which the raid was based was obtained illegally?

Or should I be "glad" that the government is trying hunt down "nuclear terrorists"?

Or is the program simply a way to get citizens accustomed to warrantless searches, so we don't complain when they get more draconian in the future?

38 The whole flying helicopter thing was done last year here in Baltimore.

As explained to us, it is for the purpose of mapping existing radiation sources.
This so that in the event of a suspected dirty bomb or other radiological threat, one could rely the suspected area, and compare then existing radiation levels and patterns to those mapped during the original flyover.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at September 02, 2015 01:47 PM (VPLuQ)

39 Is this legal? Doesn't it violate the Fourth Amendment (no random searches without due cause)?

I know what the answer *should* be, but that's different than what the answer probably *will* be.

In essence, if there's something leaving your home, like radiation, SCOTUS will likely draw on precedent and say you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy because those emissions are entering the public sphere. There will also be an argument that there's a compelling government interest in monitoring and eliminating dangerous radiation emissions.

Uh oh.

Is there something the government knows that I don't know?

Are they scanning the entire nation for radiation levels so they know how effective the upcoming dirty bombs were, are are they only scanning areas where they know a bomb is more likely to go off?

And c'mon, a simple scan AFTER the explosion will tell you where the fallout went.

That sounds like a bogus explanation.

79 You've shit your bed, NYC, now stink in it.

As to the overall killings and the cop killings, applications for LE jobs is dropping like a bunch of dead cops. Blame for that can be directly attributed to TFG and his 'Justice' Dept. Yep, media, it's a total fucking mystery.

80 You think crime is bad now? Wait until kidnapping starts catching on here as it has in places like Mexico and Brazil and South Africa. Wait until whole neighborhoods--whole city regions--become Malmo-esque no-go zones for police.

People use the 1970's as some kind of benchmark for high tide drug use, crime, STDs and bad fashion statements. You don't think it can get worse? It can get worse.

If I may parse -

"but it should" - I prefer a long, long pause before introducing any new law.

"and it should enforce it." - Agreed. All laws should be enforced, even the ones that I (or the mayor or governor or president) happens to disagree with. That's what Rule of Law is, and our society needs to revert to that condition.

261 Thing is crime has been dropping for 25 years. At some point it had to start going back up. For comparison the murder rate in the 90s with today and it's amazing. In 1993 there were 25,500 murders in the US. In 2014 it was 14,100.

So even as the population increased by close to 25%, murders decreased by 44%.

Even going back to the "good old days" of the early 1960s, the crime rate per capita was higher than it is today.

It's not all doom and gloom out there.

263 In essence, if there's something leaving your home, like radiation, SCOTUS will likely draw on precedent and say you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy because those emissions are entering the public sphere. There will also be an argument that there's a compelling government interest in monitoring and eliminating dangerous radiation emissions.

70's kid cred. One of my chores was raking our house's shag carpet.

------------

There has been an effort to revive the Seventies since the Nineties. Some of it was good, but most of it should be consigned to the dustbin of cultural history. Who wants the Age of Polyester to return? Disco? Garanimals? Billy Beer? Colors with no business existing?

Yeah, I had the chore of using the shag rake after vacuuming too for a while. Geez, what a waste of time, and it had to get vacuumed frequently , since shag was a perfect reservoir for crumbs, and in a house with 2 kids and a dog, crumbs abounded.

283 I grew up in NJ in the 70's, not far from NYC. We went to NYC all the time. Witnessed muggings, people urinating/whacking, filth, stench, etc. Times square was a pit. (going to a concert at Madison Sq Garden when I was about 16 (and probably looked 12), I nice young lady asked us if "any of you boys want a blow." For some reason, we declined.

It was still the greatest city in the world because there was so much else going on. Then, Rudy cleaned it up. It still had all the good, now without most of the bad.

Been in AZ a long time now, and have taken my family to NYC a few times. Mostly safe, much cleaner etc. No comparison. Yes, some of the charm is missing (Times Square itself is all Disney, M&M, Forever 21 - basically, an outdoor suburban mall). Well worth the trade-off, IMHO. And still plenty of NY flavor; neighborhood deli's, pizza, etc. Boutique type shops (alice's tea cup was awesome).

Posted by: Lizzy

Oh yeah, there always are. But even though it is probably illegal and morally questionable in the extreme, in the ultimate irony, I AM FORBIDDEN FROM DOCUMENTING THIS FACT, because to post a picture of an underage child in the same photo (or in the same setting) as naked erect dicks will get you slapped with a "child porn" charge, despite any feeble claims of "but I'm just a journalist document the downfall of civilization!"

My very very Folsom Street Fair report, in the version first posted online, contained photographs documenting (to my disgust and outrage, as noted in my captions) that people had brought their young children to watch the open-air blowjobs and butt-fucking. There even seemed to be unattended kids wandering around (the fair is free and open to the public and unmonitored, after all).

After my post went viral, the perverts themselves tried to call the cops on ME, for documenting that they were doing this in front of children. Unreal.

I had to take those pictures out of the report.

I will not make that mistake again.

It's gotten to the point where the destructing of the moral code can not even be noted or described, because to do so is a crime.

On the more serious issue (murder rate), as I reported a few weeks back, in a recent broadcast Michael Medved talked about the grim statistics of rising murder rates in most large cities. He then noted that LA (and maybe SD?) were exceptions to the trend. He then, in his characteristic heavy-handed arrogant snarky way, noted those cities' level of illegal aliens and asked sarcastically "hmmm, why might that be?".

You see, as if by magic, lawlessness and lots of illegal aliens and gangs and cartel activity, somehow, produce lower murder rates. It's amazing.

Of course Medved would be unable to comprehend that most of LA's outstanding serious felony warrants are for non-citizens, that CA's prisons are over-crowded almost precisely by the number of foreigners in them, and such things as FL's recently disclosed murder trends (hugely disproportionate number of convictions are of non-citizens).

But THIS is how counter-factual, arrogant, clueless, and obssessed with mass illegal migration without assimilation much of the "conservative" establishment is.

As I was single with a crappy apartment and zero interest in cooking for myself I'd go there for dinner most nights before heading home. I'd get there early enough where I'd get a corner booth and do some work before leaving.

Once the girls figured out that I wasn't there to proposition them or get lap dances, they'd start hanging out with me between sets and if they didn't have any prospects in the audience. It's funny because more than once I'd get some really strange looks from some of the older patrons wondering what this goofy looking kid had that made the girls want to hang out with me instead of them.

I've seen a lot of them in strip clubs in Portland. Heck, one time a rather buxom blonde walked up and tossed down about ten bucks on the counter in front of me, which of course got the attention of the dancer. Afterwards I bought her a beer and chatted with her and her boyfriend. It turns out he was a FSNCO in the Oregon Guard and she was excited I knew the term "gun bunny".
I do think that women are a lot more likely to be as least a little bisexual, and pop culture has certainly pushed the idea that they should be in order to be cool. So it's a lot more accepted for women to go watch female strippers.

When you have President Azzhole Obama's administration turning the DOJ, DOD and DHS into social-welfare centers, and the former Secretary of State is herself a criminal, what do you expect ?

Or should I be "glad" that the government is trying hunt down "nuclear terrorists"?

Or is the program simply a way to get citizens accustomed to warrantless searches, so we don't complain when they get more draconian in the future?

Sounds to me like they're trying to deal with some serious accounting problems with the radiological material at Berkeley. The "random" scans with choppers are a smokescreen to enable them to narrow down the thief without actually starting an internal investigation, which would probably turn up a LOT of bad behavior.

Speculation on my part, of course.

407 As we talk about Strip Clubs, and our experiences,
just to put it in perspective.

30+ years active Navy Machinist Mate.
Somewhere around 72 different countries
Two Unitas Cruises in the 70s and 80s.
First real Brothel was the legendary Black Angus in San Juan.

17 days in transit at Subic, with liberty every night.

Stripper bars just don't do it.

Oh exdem13, check the art thread. We might have created a new anime.

Ninja Nuns of Nagasaki.
And yes they have five Saint Mechas that can combine to ... on second
thought ... an ArchAngel mecha. Now if the missing sixth Saint mecha
shows up, they can form Jesus-mecha. Got to keep it Power Rangers right?

And on the bad guy side - Super Satan and Mecha-Yakuza.

The Japanese take on certain aspects of the Roman Church can be other-than-expected at times. Sometimes bizarre, sometimes delightful. Or maybe they like the nun cosplay fetish. As my good raised-Catholic friend says upon occasion, "Real nuns aren't like that!!"

412 I do think that women are a lot more likely to be as least a little bisexual

I don't think going to a strip bar makes you bisexual. Being sexuallly bisexual makes you bisexual, but yes women do all sorts of things that most of them they wouldn't have when I was in my 20's. They apparently have "f**** and flee (pardon the crudity;. It's not the real name but I couldn't think of it) apps for your -i-phone too . Whooooeray for modern culture.

413 Anna, I'll buy yours too and add it onto my stack of unread reading. I have trouble reading now bc I think I have picked up ADD somehow. Short attention span, easily distracted. I can't read more than a few pages at a time and then give up bc it's exhausting for me to read now which I hate. I majored in English Lit and fell in love with books a kid. It sucks to be a grown up

414 Given the liberal lack of concern over the baby parts business of Planned Parenthood, children are not a great priority for the liberal progressives and social democrat set. Also genders -- so old fashioned. Obama's stinkhole.

415 True story, a coworker used to hire a dwarf that used to walk around with a special hat that was filled with chips and dip. This was in between rounds of dwarf lawn bowling. He made $300.00 a gig.

416 Garanimals? Someone was dissing Garanimals?

They have their place. I think fashion victims like Lena Dunham and Moochelle would benefit from clothes with tags which would allow them to easily color coordinate. Instead of matching tigers and giraffes however, the concept could be updated for libs. They could match tags shaped like a packet of BC pills or EBT cards or bongs or vayjayjays - all the things held sacred by the SJWs.

417 My BIL once confessed that he used to like going to strip clubs occasionally, before he married my sister - until one day, he was looking at some girl and realized she was younger than his daughter. And after that, all he could think was "Where is your dad? Why is he permitting you to do this?"

Which ruined the fun for him.

419 Meanwhile, the radical members of #BlackLivesMatter (which may or may not be all of them) are chanting about killing cops and wearing t-shirts glorifying cop killers.

Meanwhile, cops keep being murdered in cold blood.

The opening of Hannity radio show today was a chilling cut of a speech by one of the BLM leaders. He said, in a low, calm voice, that it's "open season on cracker cops and all white people" and that it doesn't matter that they're outnumbered...lions are outnumbered, but still cull the herd one by one.

420 Ace the number if cops shot this year us less than last year
You are getting bamboozled by the media

421 I saw a CPO Selectee lose his recommendation for advancement over some drunken stripclub shenanigans, nothing major just had his naked buttcheeks tittyspanked. Everybody covered for him (I know nothnik!), but he told wifey, and wifey went crying and slinging snot to the CO. Guy shoulda waited till he was initated and paid. Dumbass could have weathered that storm under those conditions. Wifey cost the family a ton.

423 As mentioned, some broad - and I rarely use that word, but it is the correct word here - reporter did the whole topless-painted thing in NYC a few days ago.

And if you read her bullshit she talks about how it is liberating, and how positive people are, etc. Until... some guy says "Nice Tits" to her, and then she feels uncomfortable.

Which leads to the obvious question, which is always beyond a NYC Liberal: Other than your tits, what do you think people are looking at? Other than your tits, what do you think this is about?

If she was wearing even a thong bikini and was painted, this would be a non-event.

Liberals are imbeciles.
