BREAKING: Failure Theater Alert! Iran Deal Will Survive Senate Vote

That's 34 votes for the deal, with 10 Democrats still to announce their position. No doubt some will now bravely come out against it when their vote no longer matters. I'm looking at you Joe Manchin.

This means the "resolution of disapproval" will fail so Obama won't even have to veto anything. It will just fade away in the Senate and that will be that.

Congratulations to Iran on their new nuclear weapons.

Oh and get used to this, September is going to be Failure Theater month....

There will be no fight over funding Planned Parenthood. The Continuing Resolution will bust the sequester caps which means spending will go up and they will probably sneak a debt ceiling hike and a re-authorization of the EX/IM bank in there as well.

But there's nothing the GOP can do about this. Nothing at all. And they will never be able to do anything according the star of Failure Theater, Mitch McConnell.(via @danholler)

“The Senate Democrats have a big enough number to prevent us from doing things. They prevented us from doing any of the bills that appropriate money for the government, thereby forcing a negotiation when we go back in after Labor Day, which I’ll be engaged in with the administration and others to try to sort out how much we’re going to spend and where we’re going to spend it,” McConnell told WYMT in Hazard, Ky.

...

During the wide-ranging interview, McConnell also responded to a viewer who questioned him on cutting off funding to Planned Parenthood. McConnell said he had led on the issue, but that the numbers were against him.

“We just don’t have the votes to get the outcome that we’d like,” McConnell said. “I would remind all of your viewers: The way you make a law in this country, the Congress has to pass it and the president has to sign it. The president has made it very clear he’s not going to sign any bill that includes defunding of Planned Parenthood, so that’s another issue that awaits a new president hopefully with a different point of view about Planned Parenthood.”

Pretty sure this should count as an in-kind contribution to Ted Cruz's campaign.

It is going to be interesting to see who was opposed to the ObamaCare shutdown and who supports a shutdown over this. I'm going to need to order some extra popcorn.

The big thing is if McConnell is saying the GOP can never get what it wants unless it has 60 votes, there's no point in voting for a GOP Senate candidate. There have never been 60 GOP Senators at the same time and you will never get 60 GOP votes in the Senate. Hell, even if you did, do you think there wouldn't be a few traitors in the bunch who stick with the Democrats?

It's kind of funny because when the Democrats didn't have 60 votes in the Senate they were still able to get things they wanted. But nope, that doesn't work for the GOP. Of course Harry Reid was able to find Republicans who would sellout to him. McConnell doesn't even seem to try. And even if he can't get their votes, why isn't he making them vote against things that they can be hammered with back home?

But hey, you crazy pro-lifers will get your show vote in the House on Planned Parenthoodwhile the big boys get what they want in the CR. Are you not entertained? Whatever, keep volunteering and voting GOP and turning in for future episodes of GOP Failure Theater.

AND all this will help the Trumps, Carson, and Fiorino, Cruz, and anyone NOT associate with that cesspool in DC.

The 12th of Never

Nobody is going to nuke anybody until Iran nukes some Sunni's first.

Doha, Riyadh, one of those places. Or maybe Tikrit or some other Sunni town in Iraq. 'Cause they're allies now. Iran knows they will get nukes back if they attack Israel.

The whole world would turn on Israel if they nuked Iran with a pre-emptive strike.

One thing for sure, and it's in no doubt. Obama's policies will get a lot more Arabs/Persians/ Muslims killed, because they will kill each other.

It's what they've been doing for centuries. Think of it as evolution in action.

86 Just a reminder here about where Mitch McCornhole's aversion to shutdowns comes from.

During the last shutdown showdown, Obama was horribly bungling the optics (entirely self-inflicted, not with any artful assist from the equally inept GOP). Remember WWII vets being kept off their own war memorial grounds by Obama's goons?

Then a grand total of one (1) poll from one of the alphabet networks came out which said that the public blamed the entire shutdown on those big meanie Republicans and thought they should all be terribly punished in the next election cycle.

The Beltway Republican establishment immediately pissed down their trouser legs in fear, and folded, and resumed Fedzilla ops, and gave Obama both a budget victory and a PR victory.

That one (1) alphabet network poll, if you looked at the actual internals, *ridiculously* oversampled Democrats. Of course it was going to be a "blame Republicans" poll. That's why the network ran with it. The establishment GOP panicked and fled over an inflatable cartoon monster.

And it has shaped their thinking and served as an excuse ever since.

Even though the allegedly outraged voting public who it was claimed were going to punish Republicans in the next election cycle over being Big Shutdown Meanies instead actually... voted for Republicans in that election. Underscoring the point that the one (1) poll which flipped out McCornhole and the Flaccid Boehner was BS from the get-go.

101 So long as the Democrats are 100% committed to protecting Obama, no matter the cost to them individually, YES, nothing the Republican majority wants will happen. Period.

Saying that Sen. Reid didn't need 60 senators is intentional misdirection. He didn't need 60 senators because his party held the White House. He wasn't facing a Republican president. This is elementary understanding of the difference in the two situations.

There is only one way that anything conservatives want to happen policy-wise will ever happen. One. That way is if at noon on 20 January 2017 a Republican is taking the presidential oath of office. That's it. Period. Anything else other than that is automatically going to fail.

The modern Democrat party has shown that they will be ruthlessly united on objectives to the point of sacrificing their own elected officials to achieve those objectives. They are an unified team. Period. there is no such thing as a "principled Democrat." Making persuasive arguments is a waste of time. You need to accept this because it is reality.

If you want a given policy change in any area, the only task for the next 16 months is ensuring that a Republican, just about any of them, is elected president.

If you are doing anything other than that, you don't really want substantive policy changes. You want something else other than substantive policy changes and you are a counterproductive drag on the ultimate objective.

Barack Obama is the most successful progressive president since LBJ. He has got everything the Left wanted and could reasonably expect to get, even to the point of devastating his party nationally. We on the Right have to show a similar single-mindedness and ruthlessness to reverse his legacy.

Anything, ANYTHING, that distracts from the task of seeing that Republicans have unified control of the federal government come January 2017 is a waste of time and energy. Because nothing of any substance will happen until that is accomplished.

They are already getting everything they need to proceed because every other country who was helping enforce the sanctions folded months ago.

Yes, it would have been good to have the Senate go against Obama and vote this deal down but it would have only affected the US and the rest of the world would have filled any void we left. They already are.

Well, the answer then is obvious. We can only elect people who have been president before and have the necessary experience being president.

Yes, I can see that running a business is not the right kind of experience because running a business where you pay people wages to do what you want done is different than organizing a bunch of unpaid volunteers who you can not fire for failure to do what you want done.

Business, government, completely different skill sets.

On the other hand, as President you can put people in jail who don't do what you want, and business people can't do that. So there's that.

Oh. You gave us the House. Well, that doesn't mean anything because we don't have the Senate. One half of one third and all of that.

If you give us the House and Senate, we will do everything we can to bring this Administration to account.

Oh. You gave us a super huge majority in the House and you gave us the Senate. Well, see we still can't do anything because we don't have the Presidency.

But this time, this time, we totes pinky swearsies omg we mean it promise promise promise things will be different. All we need is this Presidency and this Senate and this House.

What's that? You're mumbling something about President Bush and having the House and Senate and something about what happened then?

Oh. Well that's soooooo different because it is.

I'm sorry. I'm not entirely certain what part of the GOP has squandered every single solitary bit of good will, faith and trust that it could ever have is unclear to you.

That latter part of the post is definitely the real deal, Reid could get things thru when "he didn't have the votes" yet McConnell can't.

The GOPe moves leftward with Dems. They are on the same team. Of course, back when the Dems controlled Congress for 50 years, people believed there was an opposition party, they didn't have to do this theater. I don't think there ever was an opposition party.

Do you think the vast American people care? No, they don't. There isn't going to be a great uprising by the people.

165 Drew has it wrong in part. With 34 Dem Senator votes in hand, the Iran deal is assured to survive now, true. But there could still be a vote, meaningless as it is now thanks to the fuckless GOP, if another 7 D/R Senators don't come out for it. They only need 41 votes to filibuster, which would mean NO vote at all.

185 If you want a given policy change in any area, the only task for the next 16 months is ensuring that a Republican, just about any of them, is elected president.

Posted by: trumpetdaddy at September 02, 2015 10:55 AM (ljZD2)

Ha Ha Ha Ha. There is no ruthless Republican. The Republican party is pretty much LBJ Democrats (at least the ones in power) regards to policy and lap dog puppies regards to spine.

You are saying we should not try to achieve our goals now, but just you wait and see! Ha Ha Ha Ha.

So what, exactly should Republicans run on? Defunding PP? Nope. Reversing gay marriage? Nope. Cutting spending? Nope. Reducing regulation? Nope. Stopping illegal aliens? Nope.

If the Repubs have to hold back because these positions are not popular enough now to force the issue with Obama, then they will certainly not be popular enough in the future, especially when Republicans run from them in shame.

I say the same thing about Nixon. He tried to 'work with' the democrats to find bipartisan solutions to problems the country was facing.

We got the EPA, which seemed like a good idea at the time.

Just like Common Core education standards which seemed like a good idea at the time.

Just like state run lotteries which conservatives all said would lead to casino gambling, but no, we were assured, it wouldn't. So lotteries were not the hill to die on, and now Illinois can't pay lottery winnings.

California is dropping out of CalPERS because the contribution is more than the state can afford. What does that mean to people expecting to get pensions?

Barring that, it doesn't look good.

I've believed for a long time that the window for Israel to take out or even seriously delay Iran's program by conventional means alone has closed.

If Israel has to go it alone at this point, I think it would mean first use of nukes to Fordow and other massively dug in sites, to allow all conventional resources to be brought to bear on a more limited target list.

Of course they are which is exactly why the rest of the world voted to accept this deal, they want to do business with Iran and the consequences be damned. When has the EU been aggressive in fighting this shit when it wasn't in their financial interest? They only reason France helped in Libya was because they had a huge oil interest there.

But those economic interests aren't always for peaceful purposes. China has already agreed to build a new heavy water reactor in Iran to replace the one at Arak. That happened in the last couple weeks. That was strictly prohibited under the old international sanctions. China has been trying to fill the void we left in the middle east ever since Obama's retreat and they have large oil interests in Iran. Same with Russia.

And the old sanctions agreement put the UN in charge of monitoring Iran for compliance with atomic restrictions. This one just weakens it further.

There were articles last year stating that it was Obama's plan all along to go to the UN first because once the other partners walked away the US would be isolated. That's exactly what happened. It doesn't mean the Senate under McConnell isn't weak, just means this is all on Obama.

Dude Mitch, you are a senator you don't have to put in 30 years to get the gold plated pension just retire now. We need the tea party sentiment folks to form a Liberty party or take over the Constitution party or something.

In the meantime go Trump go, its to the point that if you do nothing but smash the GOP to the point a real opposition party has space to form I'll consider that a positive.

307 Once again... WRONG ARGUMENT!!!!

The difference between an Executive Agreement, and a Treaty, is that an executive agreement can be done with JUST the powers of the Executive, while a Treaty needs supporting legislation.

We will be paying Iran, through the UN, to do their own inspections.... that money must be APPROPRIATED through Legislation.

Thus, this IS a Treaty, not an Executive Agreement, and thus needs the CONSTIUTIONS mandated Senate approval (not disapproval).

This Iran "deal" is not a short term win. It has far reaching and serious repercussions. We aren't talking about some stupid farm bill that the GOP can refuse to reauthorize in the next political cycle (as if they would anyway). We're talking about enabling an enemy of the US and creating an existential threat to a ME ally.

It's not conservatives who are being short sighted...it's the GOPe who can't seem to think beyond the next election.

Posted by: trumpetdaddy at September 02, 2015 11:14 AM (ljZD2)

Oh, right: the nth level chess theory of Republican leadership. Me, I go with Occam's Razor: McConnell and Boehner refuse to oppose Democratic legislation and policy proposals because they--more specifically their masters--agree with that legislation and those policy proposals.

Take immigration, for example. The bought-and-paid-forGOP Establishment wants more immigration reform aka massamnesty because the donor class loves them some of that sweet, cheap labor, not because they're fearful opposition to amnesty, whether legislative or executive, would hamper chances of a Republican victory in 2016. This is known. This is fact.

Look at the poll numbers of American voters opposed to what are essentially open borders policies--a large majority (59%) strongly opposed, vehemently opposed. A Republican politician simply couldn't lose siding with the people on this issue, yet they won't take it up, they won't make a stand, they won't even pretend.

Look, I'm a Republican, too--a faithful, straight-ticket GOP voting kind of guy, but enough is enough.

So we got major tangible suckage and handed the Dems a gigantic rhetorical bat with which to beat Repubicans over the head with when they start talking about small government and fiscal responsibility. And they're not wrong when they use that bat.

And yet here we are - in light of mountains of readily-available tangible evidence to the contrary - debating how we must, MUST give the GOP more power because, gosh darnit, THIS TIME they're going to get their own party platforms right.

Anyway, I find Wilson Pickett drives them out pretty well. (The songs, not my kids.)

371 Late to the party here, but we can't win votes if we don't make the case before the people of our cause.

In other words, if McConnell and the GOPe refuse to make the case that PP should be defunded, then OF COURSE they won't get the votes to defund PP. The Senate used to be known as a deliberative body because they debated stuff. Now they just count heads and throw up their hands because, "gee, we can't win on that issue."

McConnell and the GOPe should be showing the unedited versions of every single undercover PP video in the Senate to start this debate. That's what they'd do if they gave a sh!t if they were serious about doing something about this. (And if they gave a fig about what their constituents want.) Make the moral and legal case that the manner in which PP kills babies is immoral, unethical, and illegal. It's not hard; CMP has already given you the arguments and the proof, provided straight from the mouths of those engaged in the trafficking of human body parts.

They should be doing the same thing regarding the Iran deal. Show video of any given Friday services out of Iran where the leader and followers are shouting death to Israel and America. But no... we don't have the votes, so we're powerless to do anything but rubber stamp obama's will.

McConnell and the GOPe could put pressure on any repubs who won't go along with pushing an issue, whatever that issue is. Make them political poison. That's what the dems do; that's why the dems have virtually no moderates in their ranks any longer.

Oh, who am I kidding? The GOPe won't do any of this because they're all democrats in republican clothing. They exist merely to offer the pretense that we have an oppositional, two-party system.

372 My letter to Congressman Heck

Congressman Heck, It is with a broken heart I write you and tell you how truly disappointed I am at the GOP in Congress. If the GOP can not stop taxpayers from paying for babies being chopped up and sold for parts, If the GOP can not stop Iran from a nuclear bomb, then there are no hills, no causes, worth fighting for. I can no longer support you, or your run for Senate, nor can I support the GOP as a party that represents me or America.

Posted by: RWC - Team BOHICA at September 02, 2015 11:58 AM (fWAjv)

374 elaine,

My theory at this point is that they don't want to really fight this because either they'll lose the fight or they'll win.

See, it's one thing to say publicly, there's no point, he's got the support he needs to make it stick.

It's another to wonder privately, What if we do block this thing, then they go nuclear (as they will sooner or later anyway), then we get the blame for blocking the deal that supposedly would have stopped them? Better to let them have this one, then run against them for it.

(Please, no one think I am endorsing this mentality. I would prefer to be wrong on this.)

Posted by: JPS at September 02, 2015 12:00 PM (DVIDX)

375 I didn't leave the republican party, they left me. I guess I'm just not smart enough to understand how shitting on the base helps win elections. If Trump or Cruz is not the nominee, the GOPe candidate gets even fewer votes, by 4 million+, than Romney got.

Look to Kalifornia to see how the entire USA will be ruled once the GOPe pushes amnesty through. And make no mistake about it, they will push amnesty through before November 2016.

377 It's not conservatives who are being short sighted...it's the GOPe who can't seem to think beyond the next election.

The GOPe is giving up easy layups in the hopes of nailing a three pointer at the buzzer. It's stupid.

Your courageous inaction and indecisiveness on the Iran "deal" means that once again you can proclaim yourself as "blameless" in the matter.

However, you do still suck.

Posted by: spd rdr at September 02, 2015 12:11 PM (+fXXA)

380 So Ted Cruz was right - PP defunding should have been folded into that bill that only required 51 votes to pass.

McConnell sucks on so many levels. This Iran thing is just the latest outrage.

385 The big thing is if McConnell is saying the GOP can never get what it wants unless it has 60 votes, there's no point in voting for a GOP Senate candidate. There have never been 60 GOP Senators at the same time and you will never get 60 GOP votes in the Senate.

Incorrect. They had 61 after the 1906 election and 60 after the 1908 election, both were out of 92 total seats. Post 17th Amendment, the GOP got 59 our of 96 seats (proportionally higher than 60 our of 100) in 1920

387 The GOP and their show votes are precisely why I no longer trust any establishment candidates. They win elections by saying that they will govern as conservatives, but once they are in office (see Marco Rubio) they betray the voters in favor of their donors.

John Adams had some thoughts on that point. Largely to the effect that, well, the problem ain't the democracy, it's the people in it...

390 Re: Iran. Why doesn't McConnell call the Corker deal "null and void" given the fact that Obama violated terms of the deal (e.g. secret deals, bypassing Congress andapproaching the UN directly). Use the nuclear option, call it a treaty and get back to the standard of 2/3 approval for it to pass. Anyone listening?

406 There is an insane new form of polling out there:

"Poll shows majority wants Congress to approve Iran deal"
(The Hill)

"The poll was conducted online, and the participants went through an in-depth process of listening to arguments from both sides. People were subjected to a detailed list of critiques of the agreement, followed by rebuttals to those arguments with reasons to get behind the deal."

So basically, the "poll" consisted of persuading people at great length in favor of the deal first, and then polling them immediately after. Lovely. Is this the future of polling?

Posted by: Dan at September 02, 2015 01:52 PM (I1YPs)

407 Next we'll hear, "We need a Republican president in order to get things done."
