Hell, Sefton's blog is so slick, Gmac may even get a First! there.
The only time I ever really "cleaned up," like winning the damn lottery, on a stock, was when a local Fortune 500 company went to the shitter. Dad and I kicked in a couple hunnert bucks each to buy it at under a dollar, honest to God planning to get hold of the canceled stock certificates as souvenirs. And it went back up. When it got to "several" dollars, being kulaks, we cashed in and celebrated. Had I held it until now, I could be having a heck of a party. But, inside information, I'd actually done business with them on a small scale. They'd eliminated a product or two I thought were great, dropped their premier technology from their new corporate name, and invested heavily in you-know-where, so I didn't really have any faith in them. Sadly, still don't. Posted by: Stringer Davis at September 02, 2015 07:23 AM (xq1UY) 51

I hear the Hunt brothers tried cornering the market once upon a time ago in the 60's, didn't work out to well for them either.
What's funny to me about the silver market is so many think it's a safe place to invest. My Aunt used to buy and sell coinage and told me, "Get proof stamped coins, or you'll loose money buying anything silver." I've found that even buying proofed stamped coins can be not a good idea. The whole point of precious metals is that they're supposed to remain stable. You don't get the big cash-in (heh) unless SHTF and cash is essentially worthless. Way too much volatility in gold and silver in this lifetime, caused by kulaks like us messing around with it. In the Very Long Run, your silver money is not lost.
WSJ has about an editorial a week on how silly owning precious metal is. They just hate-hate-hate it. But they would, wouldn't they? The masthead doesn't say Gold Owners' Journal. Never, ever, have they discussed actually having the stuff in a safe. They always discuss metals-based indexes, or gold mining stocks. Silly brokers. I bought most of my gold at $290. Just dumb luck, like how they let you win at the race track the first time (truth be told, I traded in a bunch of old silver coins -- didn't want to be a "coin collector"). When it goes from 1300 to 1100, I don't get sick to my stomach. I just go down to the bunker and dive in it, like Scrooge McDuck. Posted by: Stringer Davis at September 02, 2015 07:33 AM (xq1UY) 68

I tend to stick with coins - eagles and maple leaves, plus a couple Mexican, Armenian, British, and Austrian coins for amusement's sake. For yesterday her two sided sign reads Support our police and on the other side: Police are being slaughtered. You too can start a trend in your local community and be thought some RW weirdo by putting out signs today. ;^) And I agree with her : Police are being slaughtered and I put the blame almost entirely on the divisive rhetoric of Eric Holder and Barack Obama. How kind of you to ask. I was going to thank people for their prayers yesterday. My friends got in safely on their flight from SF yesterday (I had asked for prayers for that too) and the meeting wasn't nearly as bad as I worried it might be. A woman at the meeting asked friends to pray too beforehand, so the fact the that difficult woman was still intransigent but not belligerent I attribute to the power of prayer. It's a shame really because her intransigence hurts the church and means that other higher ups will have to be involved. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at September 02, 2015 08:15 AM (OSs/l) 120

IDK how this goes in the future. I'm kind of seeing in about 10 years a great deal of jobs getting mechanized without replacement and a social powderkeg similar to that which happened in Scotland when the wool industry displaced the peasantry there and "sheep ate men". Not to mention a probable digital and privacy Rights movement akin to the old human and civil rights ones. We can all see the need for accuracy in identifying, for example, illegals but we also all want greater safeguards against illegitimate government intrusions and surveillance. Its all currently so out of whack it has to blow up. I figure 10 years because of the kids growing up and chafing under this set of circumstances choking off their futures. The GOP thinks their voters are as stupid as Democrats. Democrats are stupid herd animals, who can be made to vote Democrat simply by conditioning them to hate Republicans. In answer to the poster last night who said, "Aren't all religions just a means of controlling people and a human construct?" I'd say this-because I was in no shape to answer in any coherent fashion last night-"No and yes" If you think God is real than religion is never entirely a human construct and yes, religion has been used to control people in some very negative ways. It still does. However, I cannot believe that if all religion were suddenly wiped from the face of the earth tomorrow we would all be a kinder, selfless, less violent people, Certainly if Islam were to disappear tomorrow the world would be a less violent place. However, if Judeo-Christianity were wiped out it leaves a void for two things; For Isam to filll the void and for the state to become God which are very, very bad things. I guess two questions are "What is the control used for and what are the fruits of that control?"
I saw this not to get onto a debate on atheism vs, theism. Those debates usually become vitriolic and are pointless. I certainly don't feel a need to try to debate the existence of God. I'm not going to convince anyone, nor will Atheists convince me. I am a happier person because of my faith. Finally, I would present this brief essay, "Is religion a crutch?"-the description of "crutch" being a favored term of more militant atheists. It's seem to be a rather balanced view and certainly not the thought of a fundamentalist: www.mit.edu/rei/spir-crutch.html Posted by: FenelonSpoke at September 02, 2015 08:46 AM (OSs/l) 179

I'm always curious about people of faith, either of the religious or political type. Mostly because I seem incapable, literally, of it myself. Obama in Alaska, it's a disaster, the government is here to help the natives move to safer ground as the permafrost melts and villages sink into oblivion.
Yesterday is was suggested that they move away from hydrocarbons in the new world of solar and wind.... It not easy to run windmills in the arctic, lubrication is vital and they have to heat the units to keep them working. Solar probably doesn't work that well in the long winters. But of course none of this matters. I am sure the natives are politely listening and then going on as they always have. Posted by: Colin at September 02, 2015 08:54 AM (eoM8x) 208

A week or two ago, Bennett criticised Boehner and McConnell for not arguing effectively that we're better off with them than we would have been with Pelosi and Reid.
O_o Well, Bennett, that would be because we *aren't* better off with them than we would have been with Pelosi and Reid. Indeed, they did better (or at least as well) keeping Progressive policies in check as a minority party. It's funny to me that (it seems, at least) TFG has had more "success" under the Republican congress than he did under Pelosi and Reid. It took him most of a year to get BOHICAre passed, and that was a very near thing. With Yertle and the Weeping Boner, he just enacts things by fiat, and Congress says, "Oh, darn, wish there was something we could do..." If that UAB professor is correct, using IR satellite photography of Egypt, there are thousands of undiscovered sites out there. Another possible candidate for Atlantis is actually located in Greece.
