CNN has caved on its stupid rules for determining who will be at the big kids' table at the debate.
They will now only use polls since the FoxNews debate. This will certainly put Carly Fiorina into the debate, as Real Clear Politics has her in fourth place -- just a point behind Jeb Bush. But this only begins CNN's problems. Having changed their rules midstream, whoever loses his place due to the new rules will have a major -- and legitimate -- beef with the network. As I've said, you can create any panel you like and claim you're doing so based on "objective criteria" if you're allowed to choose, post-hoc, which objective criterial you want to use. Want Christie to be in the debate at the expense of, say, Huckabee? Then choose this poll that has Christie higher and Huckabee lower. Etc. By abandoning their pre-established "objective criteria" rules (which I am doubtful were all that pre-established anyway), CNN essentially admits they're going to put on whoever they want to have on and then use whatever polls they need to use to justify that decision. There is a better way, of course: Two panels, 8 people each, the top eight in the polls split evenly by random draw into the two panels, to make sure that each panel has some of the Bigger Draws in it. I don't understand why news networks, which live and die on free, easily-had news content, keep turning their noses up at free, easily-had news content. And speaking of Jeb: It's hard to be a gangsta.The bottom has fallen out for Jeb Bush. The newest poll of Iowa has Bush at 5 percent. He’s at 7 percent in New Hampshire and 9 percent in South Carolina. As recently as mid-July, Bush sat atop the Real Clear Politics national average, eight points ahead of his nearest competitor at 17.8 percent. Now, he trails Donald Trump and Ben Carson, in third at 9.7 percent. Bush's well-documented weaknesses as a candidate -- perceived conservative heresies on immigration and Common Core, a politically inconvenient last name -- didn’t seem to be hurting him when he was on top seven weeks ago. So what explains his sudden slide?And speaking of things with low energy: The Dow lost five hundred points. Time for Obama to name another mountain by his own Edenic power to name shit. Tonight (very soon) I have to go to a meeting with a woman who's potentially erratic and very angry. She's not going to physically attack me or the other people there. For those that have been following this saga, she's just incredibly controlling and doesn't want to be at the meeting to begin with. Prayers that rough places be made smooth would be appreciated. The other staff and I just want the Gospel to be proclaimed so it might touch hurting people in all kinds of need and they might have the joy of new life in Christ. She is a roadblock to that and needs emotional/spiritual healing in her own life

Trump (as anyone in his position) would do best not by smacking others, but by piling on with the things have worked for him best. Front-runners rarely benefit from punching down, esp. a lightning-rod, ahemm, "unconventional" sort like Trump. More likely Carly will attack him or something he's said. Hence, shows like TWD tap into this atmosphere, probably without realizing it.

Name any candidate and I could tell you what issues they are going to have.
That being said, if a Republican can attract more female voters, I could easily see it offsetting the layoff issue.

I just had an epiphany about conservatism. The acid test of a political philosophy is its capacity to produce results. By that standard, I wonder why I like conservatism? The philosophy has comprehensively failed to produce results in the present era. The nominally conservative party would rather keep corporate welfare than defund child murder. If that isn't a failure, I don't know what would count. This may explain why arguments from conservative principles, as broadly defined today, are becoming almost hateful. Why bring up something which is so clearly dead?
With this in mind, I realize why I have no faith in any R candidate. Conservatism is a failing philosophy, so the fact that Trump is a heretic to conservative principles has no importance. Why care if Trump isn't a conservative, if that idea has no meaning any more?
As for the rest of the candidates, do we honestly believer that any of them, outside Cruz,will actually resurrect a moribund conservatism? Rubio, defender of sugar tariffs?, Walker, kowtower to corporate interests?
I also know why Trump infuriates AG_conservative, Scottlinilcolm, Jeff B, Rick Wilson, themainstream conservative commentators. Trump shoes that conservatism is a dying political philosophy. No argument from conservatism makes sense, because conservatism has failed to produce anything. Thus conservatism is dying, where does it leave its most famous defenders?
Note: I mean conservatism in the general sense it is used today, the nominal political philosophy motivating the Republican party.

I remember when W. first ran for President, he was high in the polls mainly because the last Republican President was his Dad. It was just simple name ID. I see the same with Jeb. People see the name Bush, know that was the last Republican, and just say "Bush" when polled.

Conservatism, I've said, is a hard sell because it's not really advancing any cause. The Left has it easier because all they do is create an issue/problem and then be "pro-whatever" on solving it, making the political opposition, by default, take the anti position. Conservatism is really nothing more than sticking to First Principles and keeping change to a minimum and limiting government power. All good things, in my opinion, but hardly exciting politically.

And to be honest he was not a politician then....he really isn't now.....and was just shooting his mouth off, so i don't put much stock in that either.

I disagree--some of those conservative platitudes are actually policies, such as income inequality being worse under progressive policies, tax complexity favoring the wealthy and the well-connected, and reducing regulations spurring the economy.
We just don't always recognize them as policies, because we've heard them so often with no action.

Thus, the Senate Majority Leader and Senate Minority Leader were both ostensibly Republicans that year--an old guard Republican in the Majority spot, and a reform Republican in the Minority spot. I have a suspicion that the old guard has pretty much taken over again, but I don't know.

With the Senate being made "the people" as well, that guaranteed the states would have no power in Washington and become the vassals they are today. Federal power rules.
Another problem, and this was in there originally, is the power of the Supreme Court. Were I doing it over, I'd be trying to come up with a clever check on them, and one that involves the state governments.

That's nowhere to be found in the constitution.
They were just supposed to be, you know, the high court. With other "inferior" (constitution's words) courts under them. To resolve disputes between the states, people from different states and the various indian tribes.
They were not envisioned as a 3rd co-equal branch of govt.
They just kind of ... did that. What can I say? Lawyers.

Let's be honest though; the state legislatures wanted it that way.
It's a feature of all republics that the legislative body likes to transfer power and authority away from itself but retain the prestige of their job.
State legislatures don't want to raise taxes or select senators, because if they screw up, they get voted out. So the people select senators and the states rely on federal taxes.
Nothing would please congress more than to give up taxation to the executive, so they could all harrumph at him for raising taxes while doing nothing.
Better to give up the power but retain the ability to complain when things go wrong.

But the original complaint about the Senate was during the early (first) Progressive Era, and how the Senators were unaccountable to the people they represent. There were some scandals, and well -- long story short, 17th.

If the definition we've all agreed upon (and anyone disagreeing is a kook outside the mainstream who should be ignored and pointed at and laughed at) is "someone who is a natural citizen, as opposed to someone who had to be naturalIZED" then Cruz is a natural born US citizen since he was granted US citizenship at birth.

No, natural born either means one of two things:
a) you're a US citizen by birth (having at least one parent a US citizen, being born in the US, being born on a foreign military base or otherwise being eligible for a US passport at birth)
b) the original, english common law meaning: both parents were subjects of the english crown when the child was born.
there is no requirement the person be born on US soil, or John McCain (born in Panama) would not have been eligible to run.
