Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Quickies: CNN Caves; Jeb Falls; Dow Collapses; Norm MacDonald Is AwsomeCNN has caved on its stupid rules for determining who will be at the big kids' table at the debate. They will now only use polls since the FoxNews debate. This will certainly put Carly Fiorina into the debate, as Real Clear Politics has her in fourth place -- just a point behind Jeb Bush. But this only begins CNN's problems. Having changed their rules midstream, whoever loses his place due to the new rules will have a major -- and legitimate -- beef with the network. As I've said, you can create any panel you like and claim you're doing so based on "objective criteria" if you're allowed to choose, post-hoc, which objective criterial you want to use. Want Christie to be in the debate at the expense of, say, Huckabee? Then choose this poll that has Christie higher and Huckabee lower. Etc. By abandoning their pre-established "objective criteria" rules (which I am doubtful were all that pre-established anyway), CNN essentially admits they're going to put on whoever they want to have on and then use whatever polls they need to use to justify that decision. There is a better way, of course: Two panels, 8 people each, the top eight in the polls split evenly by random draw into the two panels, to make sure that each panel has some of the Bigger Draws in it. I don't understand why news networks, which live and die on free, easily-had news content, keep turning their noses up at free, easily-had news content. And speaking of Jeb: It's hard to be a gangsta. The bottom has fallen out for Jeb Bush. The newest poll of Iowa has Bush at 5 percent. He’s at 7 percent in New Hampshire and 9 percent in South Carolina. As recently as mid-July, Bush sat atop the Real Clear Politics national average, eight points ahead of his nearest competitor at 17.8 percent. Now, he trails Donald Trump and Ben Carson, in third at 9.7 percent. Bush's well-documented weaknesses as a candidate -- perceived conservative heresies on immigration and Common Core, a politically inconvenient last name -- didn’t seem to be hurting him when he was on top seven weeks ago. So what explains his sudden slide? And speaking of things with low energy: The Dow lost five hundred points. Time for Obama to name another mountain by his own Edenic power to name shit. And speaking of things that are primeval: Norm MacDonald has an uncanny ability to cut through bullshit and speak the truth.

Seriously, I think randomness is underrated throughout the news culture. Everything has to be massaged; there are no random polls anymore, though probably a lot because they're hard work. Take two studies, one of which used random subjects, and one of which used lots of criteria to simulate randomness, and the latter will be considered better science, because it has more formula in it.
Properly used, randomness would cut through a lot of bullshit. I've occasionally considered that the None of the Above should mean: just choose a voting citizen at random for the office. And if it turns out they're dead, well, prop that sucker up. Posted by: Just some random Stephen Price Blair at September 01, 2015 06:00 PM (2lndx) 27

I love Norm MacDonald. I've been in a mood where I have been listening to his old podcast from last year where he bullshits with other comedians. My favorite is the episode with Gilbert Gottfried. He makes fun of comedians that do important/political humor - he then pretends to light himself on fire at the end of the episode in an act of solidarity. The whole conversation with Gilbert - starting about 7 minutes in, is just the best thing ever, especially when they are discussing Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtAkLGLviGk

Bill Maher has a cute trick for when the conservative on his panel is making a good point or getting the better of the argument: he throws a non-sequiter (though sometimes peripherally related) Lefty slogan, like "Yeah, but Haliburton!" or "But Bush lied and people died!" and so on.
The conservative person then attempts to explain why the Lefty bomb Maher's just thrown is not true, and the Lefty panels jumps in on the 'dump on the conservative' game. Posted by: Lizzy at September 01, 2015 06:07 PM (NOIQH) 62

And I thought New Agey stuff was over: "So, what happens on Sept. 28, 2015 @11:11? Wave X, a Gamma wave will descend into 3D. What's a "Gamma" wave or Ray or Frequency? It is the most energetic and highest of Rays. What will it effect? Your 3 Part Brain(The Third Eye Chakra/Intuitive, The Heart Chakra/Love & Compassion, and The Synaptic Brain/Facilitator of Desire) that will, by your free will, join the 3, and unlock your Merkaba, that resides within your Soul, resides within the Cave of Creation, within Gaia(Not accessible via the Human Incarnate State, but by Astral Projection), and is being transmitted via the Whales/Dolphins. So, what is the result of this transformation process? Your spiritual DNA will be activated, the 12 strands will ascend and morph. And no that doesn't mean on that date and time, you will totally ascend to 5D and completely activate your rainbow light body. But, you will see yourself becoming physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually healthier. Like all that occurs in the incarnation schematic, it is individualized and unto yourselves, depending upon your desire of manifesting your Ascension. Polls are based on statistical 'science'. An anonymous quote popularized by Mark Twain goes: "Lies, damned lies, and statistics".
Whenever any anti-progressive law or political statement occurs, one or two thing reliably happen: 1) a poll comes out to demonstrate that the public supports the progressive position within less than three days; 2) if an anti-progressive law is enacted, some crappy court will invalidate the law within a week or two. It really is astonishing how unable to adapt these supposedly national quality politicians are.
Hillary keeps running her husband's playbook from the 90s. Jeb thinks amassing a big war chest and flipping off your base will get him the nom, and if he's sinking in the polls, the answer it to amass more and flip off harder. 72: Puddlegum's Zombie Theory is intriguing...
Why thank you! I was even sober when I thought it up. I'm one of those Bible thumping bitter clingers so I tend to view current affairs to what the Bible has to say about them. Not everybody is a Christian though but the feelings of dread and fear are still there but they can't quite figure out why they feel that. TWD taps into that fear, IMO. I'll post the theory again only because I'm a vain moron :-) and I posted it near the end of the last thread; I have a theory about the popularity of The Walking Dead and other similar doom inspired TV shows and movies. People know "something" is wrong in todays culture. They "feel" that, just over the horizon and out of one's view, terrible and awful things are coming. They may not know exactly what or when but things are getting worse and then will collapse. Hence, shows like TWD tap into this atmosphere, probably without realizing it. I have a theory about the popularity of The Walking Dead and other similar doom inspired TV shows and movies. People know "something" is wrong in todays culture. They "feel" that, just over the horizon and out of one's view, terrible and awful things are coming. They may not know exactly what or when but things are getting worse and then will collapse. Hence, shows like TWD tap into this atmosphere, probably without realizing it. Posted by: Puddleglum at September 01, 2015 06:34 PM (DyHko) Well that and zombies are people. Afternoon quickie with Norm MacDonald? I am...weirdly okay with that. It feels like the comedians with the biggest chips/demons on their shoulder are the ones whose stars burn brightest. Of course, that also means they run the risk of flaming out faster. See: Farley, Williams, etc. Norm just seems like a nice, somewhat sane guy. The Jeb article is pretty good:
... frontrunner Donald Trump is making Bush look small. "Americans are afraid their nation is in decline; they are going to lose the country they love," Castellanos says. "They want a leader as big as their fears. Right now, a lot of Republicans see that big leader as Trump, and no else is at the big boys table with him." Posted by: @votermom at September 01, 2015 06:47 PM (cbfNE) 206
So i have to ask the question? did Jeb lose it because of Trump or because of him looking like a deer starring in head lights, or his low energy output on the stage and campaign trail.. seems to me he had the favoritism of the RNC, the big guys on his side..
Does this mean money ain't everything when running for office? I do know one thing, Trump has to keep hammering Jeb until leaves the race. period, and that's regardless if Trump wins or not. Just get Jeb of the stage and out the way. The market isn't tanking because of China, its Obama renaming the mountain. He calls it the "17 Trillion Dollar Mountain Of Debt" Trump is Just using China as a whipping boy, and he is wrong. I just had an epiphany about conservatism. The acid test of a political philosophy is its capacity to produce results. By that standard, I wonder why I like conservatism? The philosophy has comprehensively failed to produce results in the present era. The nominally conservative party would rather keep corporate welfare than defund child murder. If that isn't a failure, I don't know what would count. This may explain why arguments from conservative principles, as broadly defined today, are becoming almost hateful. Why bring up something which is so clearly dead? With this in mind, I realize why I have no faith in any R candidate. Conservatism is a failing philosophy, so the fact that Trump is a heretic to conservative principles has no importance. Why care if Trump isn't a conservative, if that idea has no meaning any more? As for the rest of the candidates, do we honestly believer that any of them, outside Cruz, will actually resurrect a moribund conservatism? Rubio, defender of sugar tariffs?, Walker, kowtower to corporate interests? I also know why Trump infuriates AG_conservative, Scottlinilcolm, Jeff B, Rick Wilson, themainstream conservative commentators. Trump shoes that conservatism is a dying political philosophy. No argument from conservatism makes sense, because conservatism has failed to produce anything. Thus conservatism is dying, where does it leave its most famous defenders? Note: I mean conservatism in the general sense it is used today, the nominal political philosophy motivating the Republican party. Posted by: Arkady at September 01, 2015 06:57 PM (egezu) 232

The Left has it easier because all they do is create an issue/problem and then be "pro-whatever" on solving it, making the political opposition, by default, take the anti position. Conservatism is really nothing more than sticking to First Principles and keeping change to a minimum and limiting government power. All good things, in my opinion, but hardly exciting politically. This. The problem is that the establishment friendly candidates were always meant to split votes from the actual conservatives. The master plan was to throw a shit ton out there, in key states, to get Jeb through. Most likely Carly was going to be a great way to go after Hillary without the baggage of the war on womyn shite. She's actually done very well at that. But when you look at the actual record, it kind of falls apart like Kasich. Rush hit it on the head today. What's with all this Romney chatter, FFS, there are 16 other candidates running. What it betrays is that there was really only one true, anointed GOPe candidate. And his name was the Jebster. They never figured someone outside the power structure could garner enough attention, have enough money, to fuck up the plan. In walks Trump from stage left and now they're losing their minds b/c it is all crumbling. The Romney trial balloon just exposes them even further... If we were talking about Trump as a college kid 40 years ago, then it would all be moot, but Trump in 2008 as a near senior citizen praising Hillary who was looking to be the next President?
Trump is basically a pro-choice, big government Democrat that has seized on the border issue. I actually think that's better than most Democrats and many Republicans, so I can go along with it, but Trump's positions are far to the Left of what Establishment Republicans try to pull but he somehow gets away with it because he talks about a wall with Mexico. Posted by: Coolio at September 01, 2015 07:53 PM (80fTb) Yeah no. Trump was doing a lot of business in NY and being nice to hillary was good business. "Listen to her closely -- she says absolutely nothing but carefully constructed conservative platitudes."
I disagree--some of those conservative platitudes are actually policies, such as income inequality being worse under progressive policies, tax complexity favoring the wealthy and the well-connected, and reducing regulations spurring the economy. We just don't always recognize them as policies, because we've heard them so often with no action. That said, having someone who can coherently and convincingly discuss conservative "platitudes" is not a bad thing either. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at September 01, 2015 07:57 PM (2lndx) 345

The two party system (and I don't believe it is as natural as some believe -- it's basically entrenched corruption and system rigging that has maintained it for so long) creates the illusion of "consensus". We have this artifical simplified, left-right axis, and the system just forces the body politic into that.
Just imagine what it would be with 3 or more parties. There would be no majority in the House or the Senate. A two party system is a stretch at this point. It's close to a one party system in policy; maybe 2 parties if you focus only on pace of the leftward drift.
Probably most accurately, it is a 2 party system in terms battling for lobbyist attention. The reason gun rights is the one thing moving rightward is that the NRA is the one ground up structured lobbyist organization that has an eye on the voters interests. Yep, the 17th utterly fucked up the original system, and was perhaps the biggest architectural fuck-up we've done. It totally cut the states, as states, out of the federal loop. The House was to be "the people" and the Senate "the states". They had to agree to pass anything.
With the Senate being made "the people" as well, that guaranteed the states would have no power in Washington and become the vassals they are today. Federal power rules. Another problem, and this was in there originally, is the power of the Supreme Court. Were I doing it over, I'd be trying to come up with a clever check on them, and one that involves the state governments. Let's be honest though; the state legislatures wanted it that way. It's a feature of all republics that the legislative body likes to transfer power and authority away from itself but retain the prestige of their job. State legislatures don't want to raise taxes or select senators, because if they screw up, they get voted out. So the people select senators and the states rely on federal taxes. Nothing would please congress more than to give up taxation to the executive, so they could all harrumph at him for raising taxes while doing nothing. Better to give up the power but retain the ability to complain when things go wrong. Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk at September 01, 2015 08:50 PM (j2FM9) 454

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. Their very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals. Is there any possible way that deep in the recesses of Maher's
consciousness he doesn't realize he's a complete idiot? He's a bitter little poser and surely that explains it. He's a short little man with a Napoleon complex. There's a beautiful clip that I love of Andrew Breitbart on his show where Maher says something like 'Aren't we all socialists?' Breitbart immediately breaks in with 'So you've stopped pretending to be a libertarian?' Maher's eyes go glassy-- it's obvious he didn't understand the incompatibility of what he was saying wtih his previous positions. Posted by: Pappy O'Daniel at September 01, 2015 09:21 PM (oVJmc) 509
