IBD/TIPP Poll Shock: 59% of All Americans Support Mandatory Deportations for Illegals

Preference cascade?

Sen. Lindsey Graham called it "absolute gibberish."

Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer called the idea "crackpot" and "morally obscene."

But the prize for overheated rhetoric goes to Hillary Clinton, who said Trump wants to "literally pull people out of their homes and their workplaces, round them up, put them, I don't know, in buses, boxcars, in order to take them across our border."

So what do these folks say about the fact that the majority of Americans back Trump on this?

The latest IBD/TIPP Poll asked 913 adults coast to coast if they "support or oppose mandatory deportation of illegal immigrants in the U.S." Not surprisingly, 87% of Trump supporters back the proposal.

What's surprising is that 59% of the overall public does as well. Mandatory deportation gets majority support in all age groups except 18-24, every income group, among both women and men, at every level of educational achievement, and in rural, urban and suburban regions.

Building a wall and ending birthright citizenship don't command majority support -- but they're in the mid-forties, which is plenty enough support for a party to adopt a position.

Unless there's some other reason they have not to. Like some other constituency, apart from American voters, they have to satisfy.

Meanwhile, Jeb goes after Trump-- mostly in Spanish.

In other words, just build an interstate highway along the border and then tell the DOT that there's a suburb on the other side that doesn't want the noise.

"Gozer the Traveller. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii, the Traveller came as a large moving Torb! Then during the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Sloar! Many Shubs and Zulls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of a Sloar that day, I can tell you."

all it would take would be for local PDs to be able to ask about and verify immigration status when they pull over a guy with expired tags, no inspection, no insurance, and no drivers license then release him to ICE and we'd get most of the "low hanging fruit" illegals VERY quickly.

I mean think about that -- most illegals driving on the roads in the US right now are breaking about 10 fairly major traffic / safety laws. When you find people breaking those laws, don't impound their POS cars and let the guys go -- just deport them.

It really wouldn't take long. And others would see what was happening and decide, "hey I'd rather leave on my terms then worry I'm going to get pulled over and deported the same day" and will "self deport."

It's not complicated. Every other country in the world does this.

The only thing I find surprising about this is that Trump is the messenger. He seems to have some gift where he can say anything he wants at any given time regardless of what he said yesterday.

It seems like people do not care about anything other than the message these days, the messenger does not matter, which is an enormous change.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 01, 2015 03:00 PM (JtwS4)

I don't know, I kind of believe it.

I know a lot of democrats living in the northeast, and I have yet to meet one who does not think our immigration laws (at some level) should be enforced.

So when you say, "what should we do with people who come here illegally?" they reflexively say, "well, deport them, duh."

I mean, they have a list of "well, except MY gardener, and those valedictorian dreamers and and and" but on the overall question, it seems to be a pretty straightforward answer.

I mean, shit, listen to Bernie Sanders talk about illegal immigrants. He said the same shit Trump is saying -- you're not a sovereign country if you have wide open borders and (essentially) you can't have open borders and a welfare state simultaneously.

I've heard many middle class Mexicans do this as well, come here to have the anchor baby, then go back home. Then their kid has this jackpot benefit available, or they have a pass to come over when they want. And we can't forget Mexico making the comic book explaining how to come illegally, since they get $30B a year or so in remittances.

They didn't build that! Warren's screeching makes sense in this case. We build industry, roads, give tax breaks ... then Mexicans send profits back to Mexico. This props up their corrupt country, and that money doesn't build our communities with the multiplier effect.

170 Here's my take on why this is so.

People are sick of hearing oh we'll secure the border first and then give amnesty while nothing is done to secure the border and de facto amnesty is already here.

People are sick of getting a ticket because they were so busy they forgot to get their car inspected and then having to stand in line at the courthouse to pay the ticket in person so as not to get points on their insurance and watching the 22 people in front of them who do not speak a word of English and who clearly do not have an inspection or insurance have their tickets dismissed and then they have to pay $350.

People are sick of hearing do you speak Spanish when someone calls into a business and, if the answer is no, getting a nasty why no one there speak Spanish?

People are sick of watching the prior fallback of hey at least I can mow some lawns or do construction or work in a restaurant while I look for work be heaved out the window since all of those jobs are being done by people of dubious legal employment status.

People are sick of having to get six different permits from six different departments when attempting to remodel their own house but the house down the street with 25 people living there and with bootlegged wiring from the electrical lines and cable is never bothered at all.

People are sick of moving into a house that maybe they can't quite afford because it's in the much better school district and then all of a sudden there are a whole bunch of kids in their children's classrooms who do not speak English and who do not have a grade appropriate prior education and who need all of the attention from the teachers.

People are sick of worrying if their kids are going to get Mexican polio.

But most of all?

People are sick of being called racist for objecting to any or all of the above.

When you've been taxed up to your eyeballs, fined for failing to put your bottles in a paper bag on the third Thursday of the month, and can't put a window in your garage without ten trips to the Dept of Obfuscation then you tend to take umbrage when informed that millions of "Dreamers" pay no income taxe, operate unlicensed vehicles and can basically ignore zoning laws to build fuck all.

181 Instead of reward to turn in illegals, just offer illegals the money.

Bio ID them, send them home ... they get $1000 at the border, a promise of prison if they return. It would be cheaper than "round them up" ... just give them a bus ticket ... shovel ready buses.

France tried this long ago, forget the $ amount, but think it was like $5000.

But yes, we should be deporting many illegals. Maybe not all of them, honestly. I don't care. I think Bush's guest worker plan should have gotten more of a look, personally. This situation where people are basically second class non-citizens is a problem. For these people as much as for everyone else. It puts them in a bad situation, where they can be taken advantage of by employers and other opportunists (prostitution rings for example).

We should be aggressively deporting criminals and we should be refusing welfare of any kind to people here illegally. (private charities are a different matter).

Amnesty solves nothing. Obviously. We've done it before and look where we are.

I got a look inside one of those houses, after the local authorities finally got tired of the complaints from all of the rest of the neighbors about noise and crime, and evicted the illegals. It was insane inside. An insect hive. If insects tolerated horrible filth, that is.

As for the bootlegged wiring, a PGE lineman told me that they typically do pay a power bill, cause the utility can spot pirated power drains and will come disconnect the service at the mast. So instead the illegals will have a sympathetic someone sign up for the massively discounted "Lifeline" program that's supposed to provide a little bit of flat-rate baseline gas and electricity for the genuinely needy. They then proceed to use enormous amounts of that energy.

Yep. In this nation, citizenship is nothing but a burden. There is no advantage to being a citizen in this country. In fact, as you say, the mark of citizenship only allows the government to steal from you in order to support all those who live with the safety of not being citizens and, therefore, being beyond the law (and outside of any jurisdiction).

The Founders would have had no problem in dealing with people who spit all over the very concept of the nation-state.

Yeah, and when I worked as a carpenter to help pay my way through college, I was one of 3 legal workers (other than my boss) in a company of around 35 people.

I got paid the same hourly wage as everyone else. Except I had to pay taxes, and my boss would cut me off at 39 hours (no OT).

So really I made a lot less take home then all of the illegals did. Oh, and plus I had my living expenses to worry about, where none of them paid for car registration / insurance / drivers license / etc. etc. They all drove on fake /expired tags and used "international drivers licenses" which were usually not issued in the same name they used at work.

In the spirit of the new rules, I'll answer you:

We don't care about race. We don't care that there are people here legally who are Mexican, or Honduran, or Cuban, or whatever. Indeed, it's the people who are assuming that *only* Hispanics can be here illegally. Already in this thread we've mentioned the Asian community (the other visible offender), and people overstaying education or H1B visas (hint: the vast majority of illegals from the south didn't get here on education or H1B visas in the first place, so that can't be primarily aimed at Hispanics).

What we care about is enforcing the law. People who come here legally have to play by the same rules we do. They have to get their cars inspected, they have to buy their various permits and tax stickers. They really do live in fear of deportation every day - don't be here on an H1B and get pulled over for drunk driving.

People who come here legally are paid salaries on par (or a little below, but not as insane as illegals) with the rest of us, so they're not dragging down wages (or- not as much).

People who come here legally are required to have some amount of financial security, so they're not huge drains (as a rule) on welfare.

People who come here legally typically have a decent amount of education themselves; they are relatively healthy and disease free. This means they are less disruptive to our public schools.

People who come here legally are (by definition) more law abiding than illegals. This means they are less likely to commit other crimes such as identity theft and fraud; not to mention rape, murder, drug running, etc.

The constituency that wants illegals to remain in the country consists predominately of 1) illegals and their families 2) Democrats hoping to import new voters because they are sick and tired of the old ones not doing what they want 3) chamber of commerce republicans that are tired of fighting the regulatory state and hope to import cheap workers, unregulated workers, instead.

All together, yeah, that is about 30% of the population.

Now, if the Repubs were smart, they would pit unemployed black Americans straight up against illegals who take their jobs and suppress their wages. But they are not smart.

Because SNAP cards in my state are a weird grey color with the state logo on them and you have the press the big "EBT" button on the credit card swiper. And because anyone who buys all non-alcoholic and non-prepared food on one card, then pays for the booze and prepared food on another is most likely using SNAP.

As for spanish speaking = illegal? Well, I suppose you got me there. I don't know for sure, but when I hear a Guatemalan or Mexican accent, I can make a fairly reasonable assumption in my part of the country.

And most of the legal immigrants I know have learned English and don't need an interpreter to buy groceries. Although I suppose that theoretically there may be some green card holding Guatemalans who don't speak any English at all. I'd love to see the numbers on that though.

Posted by: MikeTheMoose at September 01, 2015 03:32 PM (0q2P7)

It's not just the misdemeanor. Its the crimes that must follow after. Ever been in an auto accident with an illegal? I have. It was their fault but guess who paid for everything. I've had a ranch house burned down by illegals coming through, and had to fix more fences than I can count. Come down to the border. Deal with what we have to every day. Brown, yellow, green I really don't give a shit. We the citizens have to deal with all the crap they leave behind. It used to be different. But I can tell you times have changed and less are here to work, and more are here to game the system. I won't even touch on the crime from drugs and gangs. One crime by someone who has no right to be here is one too many.

Posted by: Jollyroger at September 01, 2015 03:41 PM (t06LC)

334 I think most people are like me and realize that rounding up and deporting all the illegals is an impossibility, but that should be the default position, even if the government isn't actively pursuing it. In other words, any time an illegal comes into contact with a government agency, they should be deported. Pulled over for speeding? You get a one-way ticket home. Show up at the DMV for a driver's license? You too get a one-way ticket. Sign up for WIC for your anchor baby? You're going home, too! And you can either take your anchor baby with you or leave her here with someone who has the resources to care for the baby without relying on government services.

Posted by: Mr. Denali at September 01, 2015 03:32 PM (tbIgT)

That's not a problem. People who go through the ungodly amount of hassle that it takes to legally come to this country are typically very motivated to become Americans, and we're glad to have them.

We've always been a very welcoming country to people of all backgrounds.

That is not now, nor has ever been, the issue.

but when you see someone using SNAP, you know they're not a green card holder (since you are ineligible for SNAP benefits as a green card holder, and if your kids go on welfare, that could hurt your ability to become a citizen). So that means either citizen or illegal.

Now most citizens of the US speak at least passable English. The ones who speak no English are typically neither citizens nor green card holders.

No one. And I mean no one.

Rounded up all the illegal aliens and shipped them to the US.

Make laws that make it illegal to employ illegal aliens with heavy penalties for the employer.

Make automatic deportation with the seizing of the illegals assets to pay for their deportation and use of SNAP cards etc. the law of the land.

Then see how quickly all of those people suddenly find a way to go home all by themselves.

If you're here legally, if you've jumped thru all the hoops and waited your turn-

Hispanics are 17% of the population. Removing illegals would get it down to the 13 to 14% range. Due to births and intermarriage the Hispanic number will still grow. If this does not bother you then great and thanks for your answer.

400 Mandatory deportation does NOT mean going door to door rounding up people. It DOES mean so-called "sanctuary cities" need to stop harboring criminals and send them on to ICE, and ICE needs to march them out of the country.

Yeah, I lived in a mostly Spanish neighborhood for about 8 years. It was not difficult to tell the difference.

And I don't even blame the people who came here illegally, most of whom are nice people and were good neighbors to me. I blame the government for setting up this fucked up incentive system. I remember talking to my upstairs neighbor about why he came here illegally and he basically said, 'well, why not? your government makes it so easy and there's money to be made."

His wife and kids lived in a mansion in El Salvador off his $18/hr income while he bunked up with a few other guys in an apartment in a 3-family house.

Yes, but unlike yourself, I don't believe we're interested in some half ass eugenics. Really the Hispanic middle class legal family looks kinda like the normal American family. The illegals tend to have a large number of kids due to lack of education, help in manual labor, and of course, government bennies doled out on a per child basis.

410 What the LIVs don't know is that one of the biggest supporters of stopping illegal immigrants from coming across our border was Cesar Chavez. He knew that legal immigrants were hurt by illegals that were paid under the table for cents per day and fought hard against it. Chavez, his brother, and others took up arms and staked out in different places on the border to keep illegals out.

But on Cesar Chavez day while the LIV's make their toasts to Chavez, you will never hear acknowledge this piece of important history. Certainly our resident troll doesn't know this.

Posted by: Pappy O'Daniel at September 01, 2015 03:56 PM (oVJmc)

412 There is no need for a new approach, or to make illegal immigration a high-profile cause of the right. Our corrupt government simply has to enforce the laws as they already exist. Building a wall and stuffing Mexicans into boxcars (very nice, Hillary, way to go on the offensive) is treating symptoms. ITS PERFECTLY OK if the country fills up with Mexicans as long as they're law-abiding contributors. It's the criminality and fraud and abuse of social services that is the problem. Not to mention the trickle-down benefit to the central planning cabal of keeping Racial Issues fresh in everyone's minds, a perfect political cudgel.

The problem at the core of the illegal immigration issue is corruption, unaccountable spending, and false promises, all of which require further papering over. With greenbacks. Just like every other leftist trainwreck. Starve the fucking beast. It's the only way out.
Now how to bait the hook to get millenials onboard. Is it possible the fisting they're taking at the hands of their alma maters could provoke exactly the circumspection we need from this (my) generation? Even in the face of what are seemingly quite firmly entrenched leftist racial attitudes?

That's one of the most fascinating things about Trump to me. Every other high profile Republican pisses their pants at the idea of being called a racist. He tackled that FIRST. For some reason, he's bulletproof when it comes to accusations of racism. And it's exposing the cracks in the leftist coalition, not least the fact that the "other" minorities are realizing that blacks have primacy in said coalition. Interesting, that.

Immigration is NOT a racial issue at its core. I know that doesn't dull the knives of the Zetas, but we have to fight the left's ideas as well as their grunts. Don't get stuck on the wall.

One last thing...the real thorn in this issue to me is, what is our intelligence communtiy's devil's pact with the cartels? Did we really get bought in the 80s? That's a thread I confess I'm too frightened to pull on.

435 Don't forget illegals get 10 to 20 of their own reps in the House, because they are counted in the census, and districts are drawn accordingly. So if LA has 2 million illegals, they can't vote but the districts are drawn around them, so they only need the legals to vote. It takes about 700,000 to be apportioned a congressman. The census counts illegals, but sadly they don't ask if they are illegals. That might be another issue to run on, along with border control.

437 Also, I have no idea what percentage of "hispanics" are legal or not legal.

No one does, because
a) Hispanic is a made up term, and many "hispanics" identify as "white," since they are -- you know -- descendants of Spanish and Portugese, who are Europeans, and thus "white".
b) No one knows how many illegals there are, because as we are constantly told "they are in the shadows" and we have no way to count them beyond polls and census numbers, which are both incredibly inaccurate due to selection bias.

If birthright citizenship is taken away, then only those people born here who accept the sovereignty of the United States of America get to enjoy citizenship. Then why don't we let these so-called "anchor babies" stay here until they're old enough to decide for themselves?

452 1) Build a patrolled wall-fence across the land border. NATSEC priority. There are many examples around - Israel, Soddiland, etc. Use US Army Combat Engineers who will perform the work and subcontract as needed.
2) In Texas, place a wall-fence on the US side along the Rio Grande. Tailor it where the border cities are with no current walls.
3) Exec Order requiring use of e-Verify.
4) Exec Order requiring immediate deportation of criminal aliens.
5) Exec Order rescinding SCOAMTs EOs on immigration.
6) After the fence is completed and the border is controlled, offer $5,000 cash upon debarkation in their home country.
7) Exec Order forbidding sanctuary cities.

And some other things I haven't thought of yet.
