IIRC, obama blamed Blumenthol for some of the nastier attack ads on Obama (including, allegedly, starting the insinuation that Obama was born in Kenya) during the '08 primary.
Whether it was Blumenthol or not, I don't know -- but Obama thought so enough that he forbade Hillary from putting him on the State Department payroll.

I'm torn. Because as a libertarianish person, I've been railing on the police "take no prisoners" mentality that has become prevalent starting (I think) in the '90s with the tough on crime stuff. Totally on board with Radley Balko and his books / articles.
That being said, the #blacklivesmatter people piss me off to no end.
a) this shit is not about race, cops are just as big of dicks to white people too
and
b) Michael Brown? Really? The dude robbed a convenience store then tried to attack an armed cop... twice. Anyone, cop or civilian, would have been 100% justified in shooting him. I'm sick of hearing about this "hands up don't shoot" bullshit. It DIDNT HAPPEN.

Well, look, I'm a little bit in to the civil disobedience part -- like recording a cop and questioning his "suggestions" when it comes to getting out of the car or rolling down a window more or whatever it is.
But I'm not going to RUN from the cops. Or aim a gun (or anything resembling a gun) at them. Or even be rude. I'll be polite, and a little dickish.
That's many miles away from people throwing bottles at cops, taunting them, and otherwise doing things that yeah, might get you shot. Whether or not the victim of said actions is a cop or just an armed civilian.

No, traffic stop. And the sleepy little town of Zion, not far away, had its gun shop broken into and 60 pieces stolen a couple of months ago by some local din'du'nuffins looking for revenge on the po-lice for some poor innocent gunned down by the law just for shooting at them. IIRC, only some of the guns were recovered after the perps were busted.

I have worked in the public crazy which is an emergency dept. The police know, every day, they could die on the job. I support them, no matter how cranky and petty the tiny minority may be. They protect you whether you deserve it or not. The emergency dept staff do the same, sometimes under horrific conditions and dealing with horrible people. It is what they do. Do they get hardened? Yep. It is how they protect themselves and do their job. May God bless them, as the donuthin crowd would not last a day in their shoes.

Yes; it was to me too. She's a very grounded type of person (a retired math teacher) so I was surprised by that, but I suppose we've all had feelings of excess worry that turned out to be unfounded. Maybe it was because her husband had left Bangkok right before the temple was attacked, and he has gone by it many times, as well as visited it and she was still nervous about what could have been a close call.

Well, thankfully they're not in professions as dangerous as steel working, commercial fishing, truck driving, or construction work and are really in a fairly low-risk profession.
And thankfully the leading causes of death for cops are traffic accidents and heart attacks.

And no, they have no obligation to protect any of us and if its my life verse theirs, they're definitely going to protect theirs.
But you are supposed to ask the cop why you got pulled over, and repeatedly ask what his probable cause is and if youre free to go.
And once you sign the ticket, close the window and take off. When the ticket is signed, the traffic stop is over and if the cop tries to hold you he either needs probable cause for another charge (unrelated to the traffic stop) or it's an illegal detention.

I get your point, but it is not the same. Emergency workers, fire fighters and police (and, of course, the military) know what their jobs entail when they sign on.
