It might be better to change things in a different way to clean up the influence of money on politics.

Let anyone who is not in an elected position and who wants to run for office take whatever amount they can get from whoever. No limits. If they have one billionaire who will fund them, fine.

At a set cutoff date, the challenger declares how much they've raised and that amount is put into an account that is totally transparent, real time on line. All expenses are paid by a hired third party accounting firm out of this account.

The present office holder receives a matching amount from the treasury. Same rules on how it's spent. As an elected official, it would be against the law, a criminal act, to solicit or accept any money or services of value from anyone.

So a billionaire may be the one who puts you in office with his money, but only the voters can keep you there. For elected officials, if a competitor only raises $1000 for their campaign, that's all you get to spend too.

Senators and congressmen spend the bulk of their time trying to raise money for their campaigns. That's a ridiculous system.

It should be a criminal act for any elected official to ask for or accept anything of value.

Interesting but the problem is the incumbent typically has the name recognition. So a challenger usually either needs extreme voter rage or more money to even be competitive. Plus you get into an issue where individuals "on their own " start providing services to help the incumbent out of the goodness of their hear.

My concern with fucking with Citizens United is from a 1st Amendment aspect. The reason it was great was because it cut into the Democrat/Leftist union advantage vis a vis political ads/money and elevated private advocacy groups and corporations to their level.

Schumer went utterly apeshit, remember? To say nothing of SCOAMF's dictator-like insult of SCOTUS at the SOTU speech.

True enough that the big corporations fund the GOP-e to the detriment of all of us and of non-fascist economy.

But that's the two-edged sword. I'd rather have it than not.

Every one of our long and storied list of feline family members, both past and present started as a rescue of one form or another.

In our case, it was impossible to name them until their personality became better known over time.

And then, suddenly something happens, or they do something, and the name becomes obvious.

Interesting but the problem is the incumbent typically has the name recognition. So a challenger usually either needs extreme voter rage or more money to even be competitive. Plus you get into an issue where individuals "on their own " start providing services to help the incumbent out of the goodness of their hear.

Posted by: WOPR at September 01, 2015 08:15 AM (nRvEn)

True, the incumbent has the name recognition, but that can even out as an advantage or disadvantage based on the year and the circumstances.

Independent expenditures are a problem, but something that you can't get around without trampling on free speech. Considering the relatively even split in the country, it would be logical that on divisive issues there would be a somewhat equal split in independent expenditures.

I do believe that making the bedrock principle of no elected official being able to solicit or accept any money is fundamental in cleaning up the government.

160 Not debating the need for the Sacrament of Penance/Confession but as a Protestant I still rather like the idea of asking Saints to pray for one's intentions. I don't think of it as a level of bureaucracy or that it obviates the ability to go to Christ/God directly. RC's have4always been able to do that. I think of asking Saints to pray for you is that they lived very holy lives and they are putting a good word for you-just as it's helpful on the4 earthly plane to have someone "in the inner circle" speak for you about something. It's like heavily networking. :^)

163 There is nothing inherently wrong or incorrect about citizens United.

You are never going to get money out of politics.

What you can do is move the centers of money, power and influence further away from the federal government where real people might have an actual shot at influencing.

Our current system has an 800 lb gorilla of centralized power in the federal government, reduce the size scope and reach of the ferderal government and devolve power back to the states and you will go long way to solving the problem of money in politics at the federal level.

It wil most certainly will grow at the state level but it will be diffuse as its a lot harder to influence 50 states than 1 central government.

I stood there in the yard with him, fog swirling about, thinking, he's the colors of the night fog, and suddenly his name came to me. And I felt kinda bad. But it couldn't be helped. From that moment on, he was Foggy. That's right, Foggy Doggy. He was a good boy.

Now, the cat that paid us $15 to rescue him from an Illinois truck stop, there was never any question that his name was Buck.

Warning to pet owners: Do not name your dog Buddy as my daughter did. Buddy is not a name. It's like calling your cat Kitty. All dogs are Buddy.

191 170 If you read the article, it explains that ordinary priests are normally NOT allowed to grant absolution for the sin of abortion.

I didn't know that. I knew that bishops can.

Most bishops delegated to ordinary confessors, but with a requirement to report how many times they had used the delegated authority.

If it is as reported, this change just removes the "reserved to the Ordinary" clause from Canon law, and reflects actual pastoral practice.

If it is as reported.

237 Kentucky county clerk still refuses to issue same sex marriage certificates due to religious objections.

Reading closely what she's said, I can understand her position a bit better.

It seems that these marriage certificates have to be attested and sworn to by her and signed by her.

This mean she is giving sworn testimony as to the marriage and this she cannot do in conscience as she does not approve of it.

I believe what she's doing is setting up for a court fight on whether someone can be fired from government for refusing to go against their religious beliefs as there is both a Federal law protecting those and also a Kentucky law doing so.

She has refused after having her appeal to the SCOTUS being refused. She is now open to charges of contempt by a district judge and possibly removal and this is the court and the trial that she wants.

Regardless of anyone else's position on this, it's good to see her stick up for her principles and beliefs further than her next paycheck as so many seem to do.

Of course her actions are being called "hate" by the lgbt press.

266 Oh most erudite and lettered Empress of the Stompy Boots, how is this for an opening for the sequel novel? This is only first draft after all...

"Make haste Ptolemy!"

Slim beautiful Artacama stood guard at the mausoleum's entrance, fearful that the guards her estranged husband had placed would discover them in the act. Behind her, Ptolemy and his helpers struggle in a darkness barely relieved by two torches. Suddenly there is a grating sound of stone moving against stone. She prays to the supreme god of her native land Ahuramazda and also chief god of this land Amun-Ra for protection while also asking Anubis to understand what has to be done.

Behind her there is another more solid sounding thud as the covering stone contacts the stone floor and makes the whole room tremble. Her hand clutches at the door lintel as she strains to hear anything. The sound of boots slapping pavement and the jingle of armor is what Artacama fears. Instead she hears nothing except Ptolemy's men and her own rapidly beating heart, it seems her prayers are being heard.

"Do we take it all with us?"

Artacama turns and stops in awe. Alexander of Macedon's linen wrapped body is laying on the floor but it is all the gold gleaming in the flickering torchlight that threatens to mesmerize her. The quantity and variety of treasure is staggering, but she also remembers who did this. Her husband, gripped with a desire to make his own empire by stealing Alexander's body, had done this profanity. "No, only Lord Alexander's body. He deserves his wishes to be honored. Put everything else back in the sarcophagus and close it up again."

275 Not really a cat person, so it has been odd that my cat is so affectionate. Dog is the smallest I have ever had (55 lbs border/lab/hound) and he has decided his mission in life is babysitting. Stays awake all day while baby is here, so both he and I have lost weight. Pretty funny to watch that the two of them 'have a real job' and how they both have stepped up to herd the kid.

276 If this country had a one page tax code ...

Posted by: sock_rat_eez at September 01, 2015 09:06 AM
________

Estonia's tax form is like this:

(A) How much did you make last year? _____
(B) Multiply (A) times 0.17: _____
(C) Pay (B).

It's a flat tax with no exemptions, and the rate is decided at least two years in advance.

Then, when countries like Estonia enjoy growing economies, we're given the term "economic miracle."

277 136 There are lovely parts of Michigan. I would love to go visit the Upper Peninsula.
The UP. is awesomely wild and beautiful. It's great in the shoulder seasons and summer. Michigans tourism slogan used to be "Say Yes toMichigan!"
Some wag mad bumper stickers that said "Say Yah to d UP, eh?"

278 @228 small world! Cousins' cat name was 'Deeoogee'. Always loved the name, but being we were in SoCal, had to explain to many people that it didn't mean anything in spanish.

I've read that training and disciplining Min-Pins is not for the faint of heart. True? Are they a handful?

282 Cats:
Maurice
Jack
Fanny
Simon Sampson
Lolo (didn't name the last three)
Slobberpuss
Oblio

Dogs:
Loretta
Jake (didn't name this one)

Simon Sampson is named after a guy that wanted to buy a car I had for sale. He called on it several times but didn't come out to see it. Loretta is after the Coal Miners Daughter. And Fanny after The Weight by the Band.

283 "It should be a criminal act for any elected official to ask for or accept anything of value."

j, I'm afraid I disagree with you.

We do have elections. To participate in an election, one needs to campaign, to get the message out. Campaigning is expensive.

If a congresscreature cannot accept campaign contributions, to use at his discretion, he will instead be beholden to those will choose to campaign on his behalf: PAC and special-insterest groups. Also, if a candidate cannot campaign on his own behalf, it will increase the power of the media: theirs will be the principal voice that people hear when evaluating a congresscreature's performance, and the incumbent will be helpless to contradict them.

Your proposal would, in effect, limit candidates to those who were independently wealthy, like Trump, or who were strongly allied with powerful special-insterest groups and the media. I don't see that as any improvement.

Frankly, I think we need fewer laws, not more. Only a fool would argue that federal election laws have made our elections more open, freer, fairer, or improved them in any other way. Quite the contrary: the process now has stacked the deck in favor of those with the means to thread their way through the FEC labarynth. I would keep the old anti-corruption statutes in place, but repeal everything else and abolish the FEC.

As for how to improve our elections or eliminate corruption: I don't think that's possible, hman nature being what it is.

Thanks for listening.

284 281 I've heard the same thing. While I don't have a huge amount of experience for comparison, I can say they are definitely a smart, spirited breed! I have taught Olive to catch peanuts with excellent, circus-level results, and to sit and come which she will do about 90% of the time. All in all she is a really good smart little dog, but she has her own ideas sometimes!

subtract an amount equiv to the determined cost of living for 1 person for singles. cost of living for children

There must be exemptions for living expenses if the rate is going to be that high.

No other exemption though.

Other states already do this and it works very well and it's fair. Covers the elderly, the poor, the rich and in between equally. All else besides living expense (food, shelter, transport, clothing) is income.
