Well we seem to have a tiny little rebellion against the Establishment/political class on our hands.
This is also the first poll in forever that doesn't have Trump in the lead. Well, he's in the lead, but in a tie. The rest of the field:Oh but CNN is still employing an algorithm which will most likely keep Mick Huckabee in and kick Carly Fiorina out. Monmouth University's press release about the poll can be seen here.

Last I saw on Carson on immigration is that he's wavered back and forth on Secure the Border/Path to Citizenship. He doesn't seem to have a solid policy on it yet, even at this stage. Which leads me to believe he's being a little GOPish there.
Last I saw on his 2A stance was that people in cities shouldn't have semi-automatic weapons or some such silly bullshit. Again, vague, poorly considered stances on another key issue.
There's a local group of Carson supporters getting together in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking about showing up to see if they've even considered this stuff or have any clarifying info.

For one thing, it is entertaining and this is 31 August, 15 months before the election and "entertaining" always wins over "serious." When you add up the poll numbers for the top 4 outsiders (Trump, Carson, Fiorina, Cruz) they are twice that of the top 4 establishment candidates.

Here is a hypothesis:
Most people didn't really support Carson because they didn't think he could actually win (me included). He seems great on the issues, but is way too soft-spoken to be good in politics--or so it is thought.
Perhaps people are now realizing that he actually *could* win, and we could see an overton window type shift in support of him?
I mean, this hypothesis is probably wrong, but a guy can hope, right?

He definitely had some missteps this past month. Better to have them in August of the year before than in August of 2016, though.
I still think the best thing to have done was to ignore Trump completely. To the extent that he gets back to being just who he is and talking about what he wants t do, that's better.
The national security speech at the Citadel was strong. All his press interviews this past week have been fine.

Voters have a marked preference for governors being elected President (baseline here being from Reagan forward).
There is at least strong anecdata that GOP primary voters prefer someone with executive experience as the Presidential candidate (see McCain exception).
In 2012 Rick Perry was Teh Hotness.
In 2016 Scott Walker was Teh Hotness.
So why was it in 2012 and now in 2016 that the person who should be sprinting out of the gate is shooting himself in the dick repeatedly?
My theoryish thingy is that the skills needed to be elected governor do not necessarily translate to a national level and that there really isn't a finishing school to learn how to do that.
As I said, this is just the inkling of a thought and I can't tell if something is there or not. I found it interesting though.

That's usually why social conservatives do well in that contest, they tend to be a lot more dedicated.
Not sure what sort of effort Carson and Trump have in the state, but I could easily see Trump's poll support not translating into votes in the Caucus at all unless he really wants to make a large investment or camp out there. I also don't see his social liberalism playing well there.
I personally think the GOP should bypass it altogether as it ends up being a headache more than anything

I've read articles that say Jeb has received a lot of his campaign dough from Hillary's donors. I wouldn't assume that that money could have been directed at a more conservative candidate - I think it was specifically targeted at ensuring the GOP has a weak, uber-RINO candidate against Hillary.

There's a lot of speculation out there that The GOPe is going to push Carson because the other also-rans are too weak to help Jeb! Basically, the plan is to keep anyone out of a majority in the proportional primaries until the wiiner take all primaries in March.

III) The Establishment GOP is not a conservative party, and never has been. Every blogger here that I can recall has pointed out how the party needs conservatives, but despises them nonetheless. Seeing not one, not two, but THREE outsiders leading the pack in Iowa should be a smack from the cluebat, but they will insist that this is just "silly season", and the stupid rubes will come around as we near the election, because (wave your red foam finger now) "you're not going to let them(pretend that this is italicized) win, are you?" Guess they'll have to wait for next Nov. to get their answer.
P.S. If the war on women folk really wanted to poke an issue, they'd point out that Fiorina is being treated unfairly, and accuse the GOP of sexism. They just can't a sister out if she's an unperson from the wrong party.

I don't really buy into that and when I hear arguments for that like of thinking, it's usually just an open borders politician that is afraid of how effective a wall is going to be.
Even though there is a lot of incentives for a criminal not to try and escape jail (like a longer sentence) we still have walls around the prison.
Fact is, we've tried the other ways, why not try a wall?
I will say, one think a President could do overnight and solve the border issue is simply use the military or National Guard.

I'd say that almost all of this is exactly right.
I do think that he bought into the Trump hype too much and tried to get out ahead of it instead of staying on-message as he did in the first debate and immediately after. People on the right complain constantly about how the MSM/DNC want to get our best candidates into traps, yet we "jump" when they say "jump" every time the push forward people or ideas that are explicitly designed to get our candidates into traps.
People were all buying right into the "Walker is boring" meme the MSM/DNC were pushing right after the debate and I think he mistakenly fell into that trap.
The stuff he's done with the Obamacare repeal/replace plan is the best of any of them, and his speech/policy announcement on foreign policy at the Citadel was similarly as strong. I hope he sticks to this kind of substantive approach and stays out of the Trump weeds going forward.

the fact is that we do not have a problem with Immigration LAW... we have a problem with the US Courts.
A Court just declared that illegals DO have 2nd Amendment Rights to carry arms...
Because they have all the rest of the Rights...
And it was the Courts who declared Dual Citizenship OK... even though the Law said, and still says, you give up your other citizenship when you become a US Citizen... (even the oath still says that)...
And it was the COURTs who said Illegals get the same State benefits (such as Schools) as Citizens get... even with laws that said otherwise...
The Courts have been making immigration LAW, in direct contravention of the Constitution for generations....

Just my opinion, but if Trump does win the nomination he might very well pull a Reagan and pick someone like Kasich, i.e. a perceived centrist/policy wonk, as his running mate to "balance" the ticket. Note that I'm not saying I'm in favor of this, just that it could happen.

Right, There's just always going to be an incentive for the 3rd world to come to the 1st world.
Simple as that, and because we have due process and are a somewhat free society, some are going to always fall through the cracks and prefer to live in the shadows of a 1st world country , still living much better than where they came from.
Keeping them PHYSICALLY out is the best defense. We then can work on the "magnet" part of the problem once we get the floodgates closed.

Except that Bernie may be smarter than that. It works for Trump because the base is so pissed at the DOPe.
The Democrat base is *not* pissed - at least not pissed enough - at the Democrat establishment to be open to that. So Sanders has to play a nicer game. The PUMAs were a real thing (though not enough of one) in the 2008 election. If Sanders comes out swinging too hard, they will be again in 2016 - and Sanders knows he can't count on the full Obama coalition.

Fiorina pointed out that women hold higher positions in her campaign and are paid better than in Hillary's. Yes, had an elderly woman here who lived in the back country and would come out on her porch to feed the bears at sundown. Everyone including the Sheriff, neighbors, and her family begged her to stop doing it. It turned in to dozens of bears getting more aggressive at her place every night.
She was on the phone one night with her son when she told him that she could hear and see an adult male harassing a cub and that she wanted to go out and break it up. He begged her not to.....the found what was left of her body the next day.
Parable indeed.

If a bold candidate stepped off the platform and gave her his position on the podium, that would not only give them a huge boost, it would humiliate CNN and would make people cheer.
There's zero negative for this - a candidate like, say, Jeb Bush who has falling numbers loses nothing by avoiding an early debate but would gain greatly in esteem across the board with voters with a move like that. But nobody will do it. They have too big an ego, too much at stake, and too limited an understanding of the voting public.

There's a lot of theories that have merit, but ultimately they just ginned up the turnout in the black community to off the charts levels that no one was predicting and our side just did a poor job with that. A better nominee and a better get out the vote could have beaten Obama.
I 100% do not believe that this country cannot elect a "non-Democrat" for President, and anyone who says that is a troll with an agenda in my opinion.
I mean, no one ever said when Nixon or Reagan won 49 states that "no Democrat will ever be President again"
If Republicans did poorly in the off term elections, I would be more open to the idea that the demographics have radically changed. Instead, it's some of the highest margins on 100 years

I just don't buy into that, I don't think politicians go through the meat grinder of running for President and twisting donors arms all because they so love Jeb Bush and want him to win. I doubt if many of these guys have so much as met the guy.
And most of them actually take away Establishment votes. A Graham voter or a Kasich voter is a Jeb voter, so how does it help Jeb?
They run because every politician has a giant ego and they all want to be President. If they have a state that's early in the line up, they have the outside possibility of catching fire, so they take their shot and maybe next time around they get a little closer. Or maybe get on the VP slot and are next in line.
I just don't buy into the big conspiracies, I just see it being a lot of ego.

Northern Virginia has always had a lot of government workers though. I would love to see a comparison of how many more fed government workers are in VA from 2004 (which Bush won easily) and 2012. My guess is you're talking about .1% of the voter base.
The GOP lost VA in 2014 by a whisker to an entrenched, popular incumbent.
I will concede that VA has gone from reliably red to purple, but it's a winnable state for us. I wouldn't mark it down as say Maryland.

Oh I agree with you that VA is still winnable, but it will require a good candidate and effort. Romney ran an awful GOTV effort there.They should have studied what Rove did in 2004.However, as a resident of MD, it is weird to have a conservative governor while VA has McCauliffe.

The GOP has made a lot of dumb mistakes that can explain VA. Cuccinelli was a poor nominee and was something of a freak show with his SoCon views (like bringing back sodomy laws) and then you had the backdrop of the outgoing Republican Governor going to prison. But even then, it came down to a whisker.
It's just not a typical Southern state and it's not in the bag for either party.

Last time this came up, the sodomy laws question drew an indignant answer that, well, yes, he DID support those laws, but ONLY to try to go after child molesters.

And yes, McDonnell's self inflicted legal troubles were an obvious problem for the GOP. Though McDonnell basically did briefly on a small scale what Terry McAuliffe had previously done on an industrial scale for decades and continues to do to this day.

Huckabee's flavor of Christianity smells a lot like the Unitarian Universalists to me.
I would have argued that the 'politician' GOP field needs to reduce to Walker and Cruz in a hurry if we're going to see a real contest, and I'd have thought Carson would be gone by now, and we'd be down to Trump, Fiorina, Walker, and Cruz.
But Walker's underperformed, Carson's picked up some support from somewhere, and the Kasichs and the Pauls and etc sit there sucking their 5% or so from a couple others, I have no idea where this is going.
