Tropical Storm Erika 8/28/15 (tmi3rd)

Good evening from the AoSHQ Weather Desk, Morons and Moronettes. I'm tmi3rd, and I'll be continuing my nightly eye on Erika until the storm dissipates. Some interesting things have happened over the last 24 hours with Erika, and I think we'll enjoy the media disappointment over it.

More below the fold...

Erika.gif

So you'll notice the track has shifted back to the west, which comes as something of a surprise to me, but this is largely in response to the shape of the high pressure area that it's moving around.

The other thing is, with its path taking it straight over Hispaniola and Cuba, it doesn't look like it's going to reach the continental United States as a hurricane. In point of fact, it's entirely possible it won't even make it ashore as a tropical storm, due to a combination of terrain and speed.

This will, of course, totally WRECK the planned news cycle for the weekend, which requires an editorial by Nelson Muntz:

Thanks, Nelson.

Now- if you're living in Florida anywhere from Miami to at least Apalachicola, you do need to stay alert for flooding. I will remind you that there have already been fatalities on the island of Dominica (where I have friends in medical school, at Ross University). Dominica saw a foot of rain, and flooding is what causes the most fatalities in tropical cyclones.

You're still going to get *some* storm surge. How much and where depend on the storm's exact track and speed, and we won't have a better feel for that until we see what it does over the next couple of days.

So, to recap:

Good news: Erika is increasingly unlikely to hit land as anything more than a middling tropical storm, and that will in turn wreck the weekend news cycle.

Bad news: you're still looking at a major-league rain event that has already killed some people, and if you're in a low-lying area in pretty much all of Florida, you need to keep your eyes on it.

That's what I've got for you tonight- more later! As ever, you can find me on Twitter if you need me.

Thanks for reading!

-tmi3rd

This is my standard allowance, and the food stuffs are replaced yearly to avoid out of date stamps. After 40+ years of Florida living, most regulars take it in stride knowing well that the probability of a catastrophic weather event in my lifetime is measurable small.

98 Halsey's Third Fleet lost three destroyers in that typhoon.

Bad forecasting. Bad decisions like not cutting loose ships to maneuver in the storm for themselves. Combined with the destroyers were expecting to refuel, which meant they had pumped out ballast and were riding high. And had a recipe for disaster.

What most outsiders never realize is that on most afternoons in the lower part of the peninsula, or Florida penis if so inclined, the thunder bumper's more either west to east and offshore to onshore with regularity topping 60-80 thousand feet. Winds can exceed 40-60 mph under the bumper.

There can be very violet wind events with hail that can far eclipse a TS. I am not suggesting you discount TS's, but in perspective, it's kind of like a large mouse fart instead of a CAT 3 blow.

Hillary can fart louder than a minor TS!

109 We had light rain in the Portland area today. We are supposed to get heavier rain over the weekend, so it could stretch far enough inland to help with the fire situation. Of course, they've been wrong about the weather a lot lately.

Not really. I've had pretty good results by either closing one eye, putting a hand over one eye, or wearing an eye patch.
I like the eye patch option. Then you can act rather piratical.Arrrggghhhhh!

Cannot imagine what a hurricane would be like.
Posted by: Tilikum Killer Assault Whale at August 28, 2015 08:04 PM (hVdx9)

I live in Pennsylvania and have never been in a hurricane. A straight-line thunderstorm came through here about 10 years ago, and the front was like the shock wave from an explosion. Roughly 60 mph winds hit all at once and nearly bent the trees sideways, along with a torrential downpour. That was pretty frightening. It only lasted a couple minutes, then settled down considerably.

124 Hurricane Ignacio might hit Hawaii in the next three or four days. The current track from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center puts the track a little to the north of the islands, brushing past the Big Island of Hawaii and Maui as a hurricane, but the Big Island itself is in the bottom third the cone three days or so from now.

125 Grumpy: I, personally, like laminates.

Though I do watch dumpsters for offshore pallets with large timber in the skid parts - there is some nice (nameless, Asian) hardwood to be found there.
All I've made from it (gunwise) so far is a few handgun grips and knife scales, but the shop mallets have stood the tests of time & abuse quite well.

And I think Gary Oldman's greatest role was Zorg in 5th Element, but that's just me; that is one of my top 10 movies all around.

Two Scotch & rocks to the wind here.

126 I've loved Gary Oldman since "Sid and Nancy".

And I'm drinking a Martinez (equal parts gin and sweet vermouth, bitters, and lots of masaschino cherries and cherry juice)

128 Hey, A.H.E., new one up above ?

Sid & Nancy is one I've never seen.

Cherries are always good .... Scotch is all I've got in the house right now or I'd try that. Got some cherries in a jar in the basement, but they're home-canned for pie, not maraschino.

129 Sock_rat_eez, it's from 1986:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091954/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Less about the Sex Pistols than about the deep but mutually destructive love between Sid Vicious and groupie Nancy Spungen.

And I just saw there's an actor in it named Edward Tudor-Pole. Best unintentional PBS porn name ever!

130 One of the last tropical storms we had (and did not evacuate) had 20" of rain and historic flooding. On the barrier island the water collected, briefly and for the first time in our 20 yrs, then went away. Another similar storm brought lots of rain and wind and knocked an oak sideways that grew another 15 yrs like a bonsai in yard. And these were two we did not have to evacuate.

I think there will be a lot of rain. Floridaians know the drill...xoxo

131 @120...I evacuated or was not there for some hurricanes. But the Level 1's that came up over the state from south...and/or skirted the Atlantic, what I remember is fire-hose rain off roof and a constant howl of wind for hours and hours at a time. I was never worried as our home was built like a bumker. But you get freaked out by the sound. Keeping in mind that during normal storms or moon tides you could hear the Atlantic from inside house.

I hope and pray the storm turns to the Atlantic due to El Nino.
