The Saddest Comment Ever

i gotta tell you, sometimes I post my actual thoughts on twitter because I'm sick of being attacked in the comments for them.

on twitter, I can block people.

so... yeah, bad commenters drive out good ones. Every site in the world discovers this; the Wild West model is always proven to fail. Always.

Posted by: ace at August 26, 2015 09:33 PM (dciA+)

Follow-up to the Saddest Comment Ever

585 The "abuse' Model of "argument" is not an attempt at discussion, but of shutting discussion down.

The goal is to make it socially painful to express a non-approved idea; some of the Trump supporters are trying to do just this, to make it socially painful to express an anti-trump sentiment here, by pouring abuse on whoever speaks one, thus making him keep silent, as well as any other people who witness it.

Well, it worked too well, to the point where I discovered I was saying things ON TWITTER I was too dissuaded to say ON MY OWN FUCKING BLOG.

Then one day I woke up and said "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BULLSHIT?" and like that, I decided I would force the migration in the other direction.

Spirited debate is fine; so is supporting Trump. I half support him myself. (You might not know that, because I keep trump commentary to twitter, because i've learned I cant' talk about trump on my own blog.)

But this idea that we are going to BULLY AND HECTOR PEOPLE INTO SILENCE is not a form of debate; it is the fascist's idea of stifling debate.

It will no longer be tolerated. And I don't just mean the Trump people (though they were the straw that broke this camel's back); I mean the trump-baiters, too.

Anyone who takes someething to a personal place that doesn't need to be in a personal place.

Posted by: ace at August 26, 2015 09:52 PM (dciA+)

It's a very sad day when a man can't post his own thoughts on his own goddamn blog without being personally abused and insulted by his so-called fans.

Frankly the Trump thread on Tuesday was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. If this blog were a bar, I wouldn't want to hang out in it because of the ugly crowd it's attracted. After browsing through all the vitriol in the comments I told Ace that I didn't like this place any more and wasn't sure I wanted to post here any longer. It's been taken over by the raging nasties who take everything personally and feel that their anger at...well everything gives them a license to asshole. Note: It doesn't. Well at least not here.

And if I'm feeling this way - and Ace as well apparently - then there are probably dozens, even hundreds of others who feel the same way but have just walked away from the blog entirely. That's the silent insidious damage that this kind of atmosphere does. Not only does it devolve all discussions to insults and attacks but it quietly drives away the good commenters who have the most to offer. This is how online communities eventually wither and die.

Now some of this behavior is due to the very human tendency to take out your anger on a person of convenience rather than the actual, deserving target - especially when there's so much free-floating and well earned anger around. This is why people often end up being the nastiest to the loving people around them since a) they're close at hand and that's so much easier than having to track down the real target b) it feels so good to rage at and insult someone - anyone - even if they had nothing to do with the cause of the rage and c) deep down the ragers know that their chosen targets will take it without any real consequences. The fact that this kind of anger displacement is so easy, satisfying, and mostly cost-free is why it's such a common human failing. And when there's no cost at all you get the cesspool of internet comment sections.

Then you have the trolls and assholes (trassholes? asstrolls?). But calling them that is really glossing over some of the nuances of their behavior. Because a good percentage of the people most angry and unhappy about politics are in fact just angry and unhappy people in general. And 'politics' becomes a safe, more socially acceptable way to vent and act out all these pent-up feelings.

As Ace has pointed out before a whole lot of what would be considered disturbed, even somewhat crazy behavior in other areas of life suddenly gets a pass when it's presented as 'political' passion. So a lot of psychological energy in these types of people gets dressed up as 'politics' since that's more socially tolerated and you can get away with a lot of shit that would get you tossed or beaten/arrested elsewhere. But being an asshole because 'you just love america so much and hate what they have to done to it' still means that you're being an asshole - albeit with above average rationalization abilities.

Wesley.gif

Anyway whatever the reasons these vitriolic and personal attacks are ending.

The Most Exclusive College You've Never Heard of Has Just 26 Students

Deep Springs College is a liberal arts college deep in the California desert near Death Valley. It's both a school and a working cattle ranch. Those very few students who are admitted to it study great books, especially within the fields of religion and philosophy, as well as do hard physical labor to earn their keep.

It's an incredibly selective institution. Only 6 to 15 freshmen are granted offers of admission each year, of which 90% accept. After spending two years there, 80% of graduates go on to higher universities, including elite Ivy League schools. The all-male school offers an isolated, almost monastic lifestyle of study and work.

59 The "abuse' Model of "argument" is not an attempt at discussion, but of shutting discussion down.

I think you're reading too much into this if you're assuming there's a goal involved.

The "abuse" model, whether you're talking about a kid or an actual adult in a political debate, is just the resort of weak mind that's either incapable of thinking of any other reason somebody could be opposed to them or incapable of coming up with another response.

While I do think the free-wheeling atmosphere has benefited this place a lot, we have lost some good commenters because of stupid, negative, personal attack tendency. Wherestherum and alexthechick (I haven't seen her here in a while) are the too most obvious one's that come to mind.

65 I'm glad that Ace and Maet decided to bring up the subject of verbal abuse in such a forthright manner. I have to say that the chief reason I don't post a lot here (and then mostly on "safe" topics like kittehs and baseball) is the sheer decibel level of some of the nastier posters. I had a perpetually angry and verbally abusive mother and aunt (mother's older sister, she could have reduced a Marine drill sergeant to tears)-- and while I survived that kind of childhood, I don't need to seek out angry people (or their postings) in adult life. I hope that what Lincoln called "the better angels of our nature" will stick around here.

85 It's a fine blog. Nerves are frayed all over the country. It's not just the comments. There is a sense that the dance is nearly done and when the music stops nobody really has any idea what to do next. So we hope for a political solution. Yeah. That's why people are freaking. Politics as a solution to a real serious problem like debt and isis and nuclear Iran. Just typing g that makes me sweat.

People here are good people. Few trolls here, but they are so dumb they are amusing. It's a tough time, don't take it out on your fellow morons. You may need em in the future.

To some people, that is.

And Ace doesn't owe us this blog, and endless tolerance of just plain nasty bullshit.
And we don't owe each other anything.
But civilized, or even semi-civilized people show some restraint, because of some expectation of reciprocity.
And Ace writes because he likes to write, and see his ideas be read, and discussed. Any writer likes some kind of affirmation or response, even if it can be somewhat silly.

Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at August 28, 2015 12:27 AM (oFCZn)

Let's throw out the Conservative label. I know that sounds like crazy talk, but that's not who we are, especially in a global sense. As Reagan once said, the American experiment is still the newest idea in man's relation to man, that people can rule themselves without input from some distant capitol.
Conservative in the historical sense of the word, and even in the European sense means Tory, or Monarchist. That's the opposite of who we really are, and the Left has been in control of our political definition for too long. They're the Conservatives, they're the ones that want to go back to a central ruling elite that makes all of the decisions for the starving masses, and as it's been said, it is the fate of the Conservative to be dragged kicking and screaming into a future they do not want.
We're still the same classical liberals that freed this country from British rule, and they're still the Tories, except that they've decided they're the ones who should be doing the ruling.

I think it was the classical idea of a liberal, as opposed to an instrumental, education. (I'm using "liberal" here in the Greco-Roman sense, as that which pertains to a free man.)
It's the old philosophical idea of seeking truth for its own sake, not for utility. Plus, there's the hope of strengthening character.
That sort of thing.....on a full scholarship too!

248 It's human nature. Nastiness when assured anonymity.

In college one of my billion jobs was as an information operator. This is pre smart phones people (my lawn, get off it). Anyway to get people to use the service they had us answer trivia questions in addition to phone numbers, directions, blah blah blah. People wouldn't even have to give their name if they didn't want to (this was pre caller ID, see above lawn reference).

Some people would say the most unbelievable nasty shit if they thought they were anonymous. Just for giggles. Just cause they could.

Meaning, chores, scooping the poop, mending fences, roundups, etc., while keeping up studies and attending Mass. I'm thinking that private school upstream is a similar deal. Usually dealing with life beyond grocery stores teaches very vital lessons. I'm speaking as one who grew up subsistence in Alaska. It went pretty good. You could say someone's views were stupid, but not that they were stupid. Heated, passionate arguments, but no stupid.

The real name thing would be suicide in today's environment. Back then, users were the "1%". The LIVs and general idiots weren't there. Once the dumb masses and all this identity theft and SWATing and all that came on, no way.

It was nice while it lasted. Of course the old CompuServe died long ago. But their fora were a model.

313 Folks, I for one approve of the new way of things. Folks are forgetting how to control their anger. The result was the Trump Wars. It was just plain making this place painful.

This is not your private battlefield to vanquish your foes, folks. Ace opened this place up as a playground for us misfits and too many of us just started to shit all over it. I'm half amazed he didn't pull the plug entirely.

I couldn't help but notice that the vast majority of those who whined about it last night weren't regulars. Most I'd never seen before. Brings up a lot of questions in and of itself. I don't know where some of these folks came from and what kind of joint they thought this was, and frankly I don't care.

A lot of us looked at this as a refuge from the raging stupid in the world around us. It's a damn shame folks had to drag it in here for whatever reason. It was screwing up a must-read site and grade A hangout.

I don't talk as much as most because I have a simple rule: If I don't have value to add, I don't bother.

Folks might do well to adopt that.

And to remember that flaming someone you don't agree with doesn't add value.

Capitulation?

Believe it or not, those are all passing things. Some things can be reversed, some things we will have to accept. We don't live in a perfect world; we live in a fallen world.

They really win when they change you inside to become a mirror image of them, and then, there is really no difference; and no hope, and no future. When we no longer consciously choose to be the type of person we want to be, then we really have lost ourselves, and forfeited our future.

Ummm, no.

The student body is very conservative.

The current President is an Obamaclone complete with a matching Mooch, but the faculty and student body are opposed to him. The Board is split on him, and the Chairman decided to give him an extension. Most are waiting for another college to hire him away.

Every so often, we get a school President that is a snowflake, but the institution tends to shrug them off.

Still want to see him stomp the GOPe flat, though. Fuckers have it coming.

I read some of it, Maet. And I stand by what I say. The pro-Trump contingent are not all saints, by any means, but the anti-Trump crowd seems to use invective as a first resort, more often than not.

Like I said, as a Canadian, I'm on the outside looking in, and there is no question that Mr. Trump is very polarizing individual. One thing further: I note many commenters here endorse Trump as the "let it burn" candidate, meaning they don't see hime so much as a savior, but as a catalyst for the Burning Times. Yet the anti-Trump crowd almost invariably regards these people as hopeless fanbois of Der Donald.

356 You know, I don't know how QuEeen Janet can normalize monetary policy without triggering the biggest mess you've ever seen. There's so much printed (digitally, of course) dollars out there. To suck that out, they'd have to start Ts themselves, not to mention $1T of MBS shit they've monetized.

Of course, and I believe there was some analysis that confirmed this, the Fed doesn't have to the control it thinks it has. There is a fiction that the Fed is all powerful and when it wants "X", it will get X.

But really it doesn't. The market simply senses what the Fed is doing, and complies.

So even with a balance sheet pushing $5T, Janet might achieve a rate increase, just because the market thinks she can.

374 Keyboard courage.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 28, 2015 12:54 AM (9mTYi)

Keyboard courage is a double edged sword. It can also be a force for good. Look at the way that Egypt overthrew its Muslim Brotherhood politicians, keyboard warriors organizing protests was a big part of it. Or for a home grown version, the Tea Party. I was there when it started, and it didn't start with a phone call like the astroturfs claim. It was born on the internet, moments after Santelli's rant heard 'round the world. He gave it a name and the keyboard warriors showed up in droves to hash out where to go with it. I was one of the guys pushing Constitutional government as its big issue and telling the SoCons to get lost.
If I couldn't have done that anonymously, I'd have probably done it anyway, and I'd have probably been vindictively targeted by the IRS under this administration, or have suffered a mysterious demise like a certain high profile friend.

Hiya, Mike! Yeah, that's a fair-size body of water. Just wasn't sure of Derak was on the shore of the big lake itself, or nearby in the district, which makes a difference if pumping water out of the lake is under consideration.

In other news, I hung 4 new tires on the TR6 yesterday. One of the ones on it exploded in the garage over the summer. Belt damn near peeled right off it, and steel wire sticking out like Trump's forelock. Put a battery in it today, and got it fired up, but both carbs leak like a cow pissing on a flat rock. Tomorrow, the carb kits go in, I guess.

421 Sven ... all I'm saying is that I don't think you're retarded for sticking 27 years with the GOP because it hasn't been the same party / people for 27 years. It maybe worse than when you started in terms of 'every man for himself ... and maybe a donor favor, hear & there' but for example, Tom Cotton is a Republican & he is very different than say, Dick Durbin, a Democrat, or say Eric Cantor, a used to be Republican ...

Old age, and heat (near Phoenix) and gremlins. But mostly gremlins. It must have gone with a loud bang. Because if the air had just seeped out, the tread wouldn't have been half peeled off it. Two other tires of the same brand (Nitto) on it, and one was half-flat, and belst-separated, and one is still aired up, and resting in the spare tire well, but it has a fault line opening up at the tread-sidewall corner. Fourth tire was a Hankook, and it was OK. I guess it replaced Nitto #1 that failed, back when a previous owner had the car.

And the spare tire was a Michelin red line, made in France, 1971, and still in as-new condition. Go figure.

450 There is a local legend of a DC-3 belonging to the Free Mexican Air Force that crash landed in the Sierra Nevadas back in the 70's. The crew fled and were never found.

It was full of marijuana.

The first people to find it were hikers who dumped out their back packs and walked out with all the weed they could carry. Soon they and their friends were coming back for more.

According to the story, by the time the forest rangers found the wreckage most of the cargo was gone. The weed is long gone now, but they say the wreckage is still there.

I never saw it, but I know somebody who knows somebody who saw it.

452 If you're defining the problem as "Trump Supporters" then I don't think you are focused on the right problem. There are alot of people, and you will never be able to identify with all those who are even on your team. The libs were brilliant at calling the Tea Party a "bunch of redneck racists" because it made other Republicans stop and go "Oh yeah, maybe they are right maybe I shouldn't side with them." They quashed a whole movement just by affiliation; they are brilliant at it.
Well guess what? Trump supporters are kinda like the Tea Party scenario once again but here come you buffoons doing the same thing to your very own team. Can I call you stupid idiots w/o getting banned?
And yes, you can call me a "low information" person because I don't have the time to come on here and read all these nonsense whiny comments. You ought to be learning to take the fight elswhere and taking it to the other side. Me? I don't care too much I have not been a Republican since 2006 because that's when I realized that the party WASN'T DOING ONE DAMN THING towards my well-being or even the public's in general.
Do you know the "issue of the day" at that time? Immigration my friends, Immigration. And 2006 was before his highness Obama ever came on the scene, and I have been an Independent ever since. The Republicans don't know how to fight and what to fight for anymore. If Trump is the closest to Reagan that we can get then I am behind him 100%. And I will fight on my own and set the best example I can in my OWN personal dealings with people.

It was parked in the garage at my winter retreat in Apache Junction, AZ. It's not yet ready for the road, but it's close. So it went Kaboom! sometime between early April and last week. It's more amusing, than tragic. I was fully expecting to put new tires on it anyway, but I was sort of hoping to get it on the road first, so I could drive it to the tire shop. Instead, I had to tote wheels one or two at time to have them mounted.

Nope. Both "sides" were behaving badly --including me. I pride myself on "tempering" certain situations, but a culture of real vitriol had developed.

Not just with this issue, but others.

I stayed away, but found myself "caught-up" in the bomb-throwing, as well.

It was people who hadn't read the post, assuming things and taking on Ace, as if he had said something he hadn't that Got his Goat.

It was the vitriolic argument against straw-men and assumed ghosts that made Ace wonder why he had to hold-down a full-time job battling ignorance.

You can only say, "That's not what I said. Read the post.", so many times before you spit upon your hands, raise the Jolly Roger and start slitting throats...

The difference here was that the thoughts to which the vulgarities were attached were several grades higher than what I was used to. And in the foul-mouthed back and forth of these comments was real discourse. I was happy.

So I stuck my toe in the comments section, trying to be funny, and got bitch-slapped by the regulars. All that told be was that there would be no toe-sticking....jump in or stay out!
I like this place that way.
What Ace and Maet are rightfully pointing out is that the foul mouthed personal attacks now are devoid of the intellectual challenge or yore.
Some folks are afraid this place will turn into LGF, and I used to go there too, so I understand that aspect.
I am more afraid of this place becoming another America Online or Yahoo board. Or TepidAir.

Zipper Tear in the sidewall, caused by driving on a low air-pressure (flat) tire. Grinds up the belts on the sidewall, so that when you fill it back up, the air pressure pulls the weak bands apart. Sometimes it happens fast, sometimes it takes days.
Better to have it happen while the car isn't moving, because it's a violent and rapid deflating.

So, about those Japanese ship names.

Kaga was an ancient kindgom (located in the current Ishikikawa-ken or prefecture). Kagawas converted from battleship to carrier - thus the kingdom name, like Yamato and Musashi.

Soryu (Blue Dragon) and Hiryu (Flying Dragon). Akagi is a mountain, so maybe it also was a conversion (haven't looked it up, but other battleships, like the Kirishima, lost at Guadalcanal, were named after mountains).

Language stuff from the wife, naval stuff from me (so errors can be apportioned properly).

torque, if you're around, the really striking thing isn't the names so much as that Rising Sun ensign. Beautiful flag, and one you just kinda think you're not gonna see outside a museum.

511 Now this is serious.

Commenting "first?"

An "inside joke" so dumb and boring and repeated THOUSANDS of times and yet.... some folks think that's good enough.

It makes this site look like an idiot's paradise.

It makes this site look like the comment-prone folks would really rather be watching the dancing baby from Ally McBeal 18 years ago.

Or maybe a damn water-skiing squirell that Ron Burgendy liked to point out.

Just let that urge to say "FIRST!" and that feeling of victory over the later voices surpass.....

Then think of something interesting to say!

And inane comments about nothing (because the comment wasn't meant to be remembered but only pleasent, and I LOVE pleasentness overall and in general) because I felt I wasn't part of the community.

Ace created a community.

Ace didn't want to create a community per se.

So you attract good people and think a lot and learn and grow and ...

WTF crapped in the dumping grounds????

To start, I was the one who crapped although never literally only figuratively.

But in doing that I learned a heck of a lot, and I have gratitude for the atheist/agnostic who brought that about.

I actually enjoy watching ace go through these things on the blog. Way he just opens the kimono and spills what's bugging him. The way he "explains" aggressively, repetitively, sometimes profanely, and tosses in self-deprecating stuff along the way.

And the whole exchange re Dagny yesterday, as he went from "how the heck would I know who that is?" to kind of gently inviting her to come back and be a presence.

For a moment, after reading the new bannination policy thread, I was concerned that we would be losing one this place's great assets - Mad Ace. But then I remembered the world, the GOP, the bipeds currently infesting what was once America, theSJWs,and all the idiocy - and I rested easy, confident we would always have Mad Ace to enjoy.

ODMom, question is, in many cases, is it really a question of being willing to "fight"? A question of being wimps?

I dunno, but it seems more likely that they ("they" being the bulk of the GOP, and almost the whole leadership) simply don't care or don't share their voters' views. There are probably even some who can sleep better by pretending to believe that their often pro forma efforts represent "doing the best they can do". They certainly sell that to the voters, or try (a daytime regular here just recently recounted those very words being used to him personally by some incumbents - pretty sure he's a donor who rubs elbows with them directly - and I was shocked that nobody explored the thing at all).

It might be less scary, or depressing, to think it's just that the GOP lacks guts or spirit. But I'd say the evidence points, at least tenatively, to they're simply being on the other side ("other side" of a lot/most of their voters, and in some cases the public in general, as with amnesty).

The flavor from out of space? (Tastes nasty, like the bottom of a poisoned well and the horrors locked in an attic)
The flavor from Yuggoth? (Bleah, crab like fungi from beyond Uranus)
The flavor from the R'lyah deep where things not dead sleep and never wash their feet?

562 We want to be here because your notion of how things ought to be in the
world is similar to our own. - Otherwise we wouldn't congregate here.
No.
I do not agree with you on every fucking thing. I even disagree with
you on VERY big things. (-You are an atheist the last time I checked.)
But
we don't have to agree on most things. Even on most BIG things (like
belief in ultimate reality: God.) I guess we just have to agree on
politics in the sense of what is government's proper role.
I think you are LEADING us. - Seriously.
You
don't need some rule (or ironclad set of rules) to carve out your own
space in your own place . We (commenters) are mere GUESTS in your
place.- Your space.
When we don't behave: give us a well earned and well deserved break.
Give us a ban for at least a little (or long) while.
It is your website.- Yes.
It. Is. Yours.

568 ace,
Well fuck. Ace co., as you well know, once I was banned here. - Because I said some dumb shit while drinking. I assume I never hit hard at the site itself or any of its official posters. But then again, I never looked back at my bat-shit alcohol-laden comments. (Not the first time I was afraid to review stupid drunk-shit I had said.) - Because I was too fucking embarrassed to look. I have always assumed that I inappropriately insulted other in-thread commenters and was thus appropriately banned. I do not resent in the slightest my banning. If it had been the case such as to have so brought misfortune upon myself as to have gotten myself PERMANENTLY banned: I'd have accepted the self-destructive results of MY OWN idiocy. - And nonetheless, I'd have read continued to read the content on this website. Because the content (politics, art, comedy, etc.) here is simply excellent. - I'd have involuntarily silent in commentary: yet fully cognitively engaged in my preferred culture. Anyway. Ace, there has got to be some way. - Some way for you to feel good and comfortable commenting at your own fucking blog-site. Seriously. This is going to sound stupid. But if you could ban me for a mere few months: why can't you ban OTHER assholes? SHAPE this place. It is yours.

Bacon. Well, yes, KBR did just fine with bacon. Presumably thanks to the deep cultural knowledge of their Pakistani cooks.Never saw so much bacon in my life (3 timesa day, including mid-rats)- and hilariously, many were wondering if there would be any pork in the govt. vacation destination, given local, uh, sensitivities.

Speaking of which, some of the local employees became bacon addicts (having never of course had any).

Posted by: Slapweasel, (Cold1) (T) at August 28, 2015 03:48 AM (OQ9R7)

636 Bending it backwards just irritates the hell out of the joint lining. Don't do that again.

Ice the crap out of it and take some aspirin, and quit typing with it. If it is swollen or out of whack tomorrow, get somebody to look at it. If you pulled the tendons, it won't line up properly, so it will need to be immobilized so the tendon will heal properly, or else you will have trouble with it forever.

Hands are a pain. I have a thumb joint giving me fits, and then there's the carpal tunnel crap. I got the right hand fixed, but now it's the left one. By the time they get done with me, I'm gonna look like Frankenstein's monster.

For example, you key in a passcode, and a computer slides a bolt, unlocking a door with a much simpler mechanism than the traditional key/tumbler mechanism.

717 Anna, yes, Secondhand Lions is a *great* story. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Lots of homages to the great Technicolor adventure epics (with swashbuckling Christian Kane!), a tragic love story, some lovely "how to be a man" scenes, Robert Duvall as a surly ol' coot with a heart of gold, and Michael Caine with a Texas accent. I highly recommend.

As for the cover, I generally do mine in Publisher. A friend does the front cover and sends me the JPEG, and from there it's just a matter of getting all the text boxes the right size and spacing. I do recommend getting a hard-copy proof, though, just to make sure it all prints out correctly.

720 I'm pretty sure I just need to continue constructing my own alternate reality where there is still the ability to dress modestly all while telling inaapropriate jokes about all the things we used to tell jokes about. My husband and I have a real good time together and if Trump becomes president, it can't be any worse than Obama. He might surprise us. But, I have to say, I saw an interview today where he was asked if he was religious and it was pretty funny.

721 Well I hope I can reuse the cover art from the e-book to the printed version. With just a bit added on to account for the spine and back. But until I fix this formatting issue, will be a bit difficult to calculate cover since I'm pretty sure at least a few pages will vanish once I fix the format.

And when you say 'proof' mean a publisher's proof of the whole book?

Well, dear Hadoop,

If you are correct about the thinness of "reality celebrities", wouldn't that have panned out by now?

I recently encountered a very dear friend of mind who had previously "hated" Donald Trump. (- I am guessing that was because of Fox News' ugly treatment of Trump. - because that's ALL my dear friend watches in the way of news.)

When I told my friend that I was "okay" with Donald Trump winning the GOP nomination: he said "Oh, me too. He's okay. Why not? He's no R Reagan. But then again, who is?"

Who indeed.

726 Yeah, definitely fix the interior formatting first. And yes, after the files go through the approval process on their end, they'll give you the option to view a proof copy online or order a hard copy (it'll come with a big "Proof" watermark on the last endpaper). The only time I didn't get the hard copy because of time constraints, I regretted it--the cover wasn't quite formatted correctly, so the front had stripes of the background color above and below the actual cover art.

740 I just read, "Evil Genes," which was on the June 21, book thread. Now I'm reading, "Stop Walking on Eggshells." According to the latter, about six percent of the population suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder. The rest of us suffer from that six percent. It seems likely that Barbara Oakley of, "Evil Genes," is correct that BPD results in success in politics. I am not a psychoTheRapist and I do not play one on TV, but Trump seems BPDish as do asstrolls.

I got asstrolled yesterday on ace.mu.nu for a comment about Asimov's estimates of Earth's carrying capacity of thirty-five to forty trillion. 744 It's Ace's site. Says so right in the name. He gets to make the rules, period.

Why is the site so popular?

I think the primary reason is that it's an area of mostly free and un-moderated speech. There aren't many of these left.

Ace, and Ace alone, gets to decide whether the site will have Anarchy - anything goes - or Freedom of Speech... where "Freedom of Speech" is defined by him, and him alone.

We get to decide, if we don't like his definition, to go somewhere else. Say what you want about AOSHQ, but it truly does walk the walk when it comes to Capitalism. Vote with your feet and your pocketbook. Stay and donate (please), or go somewhere else.

This is really very simple, and I don't know why it's so controversial. What "birthright" do the posters believe they have?

I will say this: If Ace were predisposed to do so, it would have been nice to see calm warnings given. I think that warnings are more effective than the actual banning.

"I'm sorry, but this post is over the line (as defined by me). I don't have time to police every post. If I see this kind of ad hominem attack (or whatever), I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave."

And by "Ask you to leave," it means block.

But that's his call.

This is still a great place to speak your mind. It has open threads several times a day. Yesterday I tossed out some stuff on old WWII Battleships, and nobody minded that it was in the middle of a political discussion.

Being polite seems a small price to pay for this kind of open forum. Compare it to HuffPo or any of those other Fascist Sites - and I say "fascist" in the literal sense. You Will Parrot The Party Line, Or You Will Be Blocked.

That's not what has happened here. Ace is still open to any reasoned argument being posted here. And book posts. And gardening posts. And gaming posts. And all kinds of other things.

I agree with his policy. Basic civility is not too much to ask.

747 Ehh. Who cares. The Trump / Anti-trump arguments that I have seen all come down to one thing, amnesty.

It is generally the pro-amnesty people that are passionately anti-trump.

Sure, there are a few solid principled conservatives who are against Trump because they think their candidate (Paul or Cruz, mostly) would be the conservative darling if Trump wasn't in it. I don't see it like that. If Trump weren't in the race, I think we'd have what we have every time - a conservative flavor of the week while Jeb consolidated the money, endorsements, and organization.

I believe Trump gives Cruz a better chance than if Trump hadn't entered the race. And Cruz is my candidate of choice.

As far as the pro-amnesty crowd, we've been having those arguments pretty consistently for over 10 years, and they've always gotten ugly (mostly because the pro-amnesty crowd always calls their opponents racist and we respond in kind with insults). It's just that now that Trump has made illegal immigration the #1 issue of the campaign, the argument is carried out on multiple threads a day, rather than once a week or so. Every Trump thread devolves into an argument about immigration.

the last group of people who are passionately anti-Trump are the GOP apologists, and frankly, I don't think conservative commenters have anything in common with those people, so who cares? Their argument is the same as it is every 4 years - "electability" - which to them is defined as "not conservative". But, this year has turned that on its head, and they are arguing that Trump is not conservative or religious enough, which is odd yet fascinating.

At the end of the day, if Trump or Cruz is not the candidate, I am not voting. So, I don't really care that much what they have to say.

I find Ace along with everyone else that contributes intelligent and quite amusing in their writings. If I was still doing stand up I would be ripping the ACE HQ guys off.
The reason anybody spends (wastes) time watching a TV show or reading a blog is because (I would assume) is that you enjoy (the TV show) or agree (with the Blogs) and the themes they represent. Who the F**K wastes they're time watching shows they don't like and blog postings they don't agree with....oh wait...THEY do! The same people who tell us not to watch certain shows or must agree that " Caitlyn Jenner" has no issues. Free speech isn't necessarily a raucous, screaming, free-for-all. There's a difference between anarchic freedom and organized freedom. This is still a free place; hopefully, with a different signal-to-noise ratio.

Thanks, Ace!

750 City of God is a fantastic crime movie, as is Elite Squad: the Enemy Within. EStEW is actually a sequel to Elite Squad (available on DVD only, not streaming), in which the same police officer was in charge of making a section of slum safe for an overnight visit from the Pope. I consider it required viewing for the upcoming Olympics spectacle in Brazil. 759 No, Monkeytoe, one can easily be anti-amnesty and still not support trump. If Joe Biden came out and said he'd make Mexico build a wall, I still wouldn't support him. If Hillary Clinton came out and said illegal immigration must be stopped at all costs because it hurts our minority workforce, I wouldn't support her.

Trump is a buffoon who is getting it right (or pretending to get it right) on one issue. I'm as anti-establishment as the next guy, but I still don't want a buffoon as president. I'd still vote for Trump over any Democrat, but I'm not sure there would be much of a difference.

I still think Trump is a Democrat operative who intends to divide and suppress Republican turnout. It's probably going to work, but he's at least making the establishment aware of just how serious the base is about the illegal immigration issue. The Republican party may improve because of it. That which does not kill us makes us stronger.

The problem is, who is there to support in the GOP?

I don't think Trump is conservative, but outside of Cruz, I'm not going to vote for any of the other candidates in the general election. I doubt I'll vote for the GOP candidate in the House race or U.S. Senate race - I despise the GOP that much now. I'll still vote GOP (for the time being) in local and state elections, but even that has its limits.

I'd vote for Trump solely on the issue of illegal immigration, which I think is the most important issue of the campaign.

Typically, I haven't seen anyone passionately anti-amnesty and anti-Trump. I'm sure they are out there, but the VAST majority I have seen, who are passionate about their hatred of Trump, are pro-amnesty. That was my point.

Every Trump thread on any conservative blog I have read devolves into pro-amnesty versus anti-amnesty (admittedly, the pro-amnesty side never admits to being pro-amnesty and claims to be anti-amnesty, but are strangely against almost every suggested idea to get rid of the illegals).

769 >> The problem is, who is there to support in the GOP?
I think the choice comes down to Cruz, Walker, or Fiorina. Neither is perfect on the immigration issue, but neither are they a buffoon like Trump. Cruz and Walker have both taken principled stands against Democrat (and RINO) malfeasance and Fiorina has demonstrated potential.

What we need to do is get this question asked at the next Republican debate: It has been suggested that the immigrant workforce is valued because it does the work that many Americans won't do, but what do you think will happen to the work ethic of those immigrants when they can collect the same income via government benefits to which they will be newly entitled if an amnesty passes? Why would these immigrants be immune to the enfeebling effects of cradle-to-grave entitlements?
