Tropical Storm Erika (tmi3rd) 8/27/15

Hello from the AoSHQ Weather Desk, Morons and Moronettes. Though Erika isn't likely to become a major hurricane, it's still likely at this point to strike the continental United States as a hurricane, and that merits a post from us.

If you're along the Atlantic coast of Florida, it's a good bet that you're going to see at least tropical storm conditions (high winds, high surf, torrential rain, and perhaps a weak tornado here or there) starting Sunday into Monday, and if you're along the Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina coast, it's time to make sure you've got your hurricane gear ready to go *if* it comes your way.

If you're along the Gulf Coast, wait until it turns north before you start letting your guard down.

Details below the fold...

Erika.gif

Modeling is pretty uniform for the next three days (through late Saturday), taking Erika west-northwest through Puerto Rico, the northeast side of the Dominican Republic, and through the Bahamas before it becomes a total mess in terms of guidance. Given the presence of the subtropical ridge (a high-pressure area), the official thinking pushes it up the East Coast of Florida.

Historically, the more East Coast-centric track is how this goes, but where specifically it decides to go ashore is anyone's guess just yet. It's going to be going over enough small landmasses to keep it from really stepping on the gas in terms of intensification, so it shouldn't turn into a major hurricane. That doesn't take into account the heavy rainfall, however- the island of Dominica has received over a foot of rainfall, and there are reports of fatalities. Flooding is usually the major cause of death in tropical storms.

We're going to keep an eye on this here at the AoSHQ Weather Desk. Even if it doesn't hit your area, if you're in hurricane country, this is a good time to make sure you've got your hurricane kit together. It isn't time to start boarding up or anything just yet; just start making sure you're not running out of anything essential.

I want to re-emphasize that this shouldn't be anything extraordinary as far as hurricanes go, but the usual precautions are advisable under the circumstances.

Have a drama-free evening, and we'll see you tomorrow night sometime.

Thanks for reading, and I'm on Twitter if you need to reach me.

-tmi3rd

Anna, isn't it a year or two of record lows in terms of extreme weather in N. America (hurricanes and tornadoes)? Something like that.

Of course "record" means nothing, statistically (200 years? less than the blink of an eye). And there's no plausible hypothesis, even, to link global temps to this particular issue anyway. And there's no real global warming. And there's no plausible hypothesis that links anything other than solar activity to global temps, anyway.

But none of this stops idiots from making all sorts of ridiculous claims about all these things. In post-scientific, cretinized America.

Their claim that weather is now "more variable" takes the AGW cultists further into cargo cult science country.

Ask any one of them what "more variable" means and then explain it to you, quantitatively.

"A-hummina-hummina-hummina" will be as cogent an answer as you might expect to get.

40 The waves that can create tropical storms and hurricanes come off the African landmass. But what also can come off the African continent are dust storms which can cut down on wave formation.

Another factor that Dr. Gray from Colorado has talked about is the Atlantic Multi-Decade Oscillation that limits or encourages storm formation.

As for where storms can hit. Your upper level jet stream is a pretty big influence. Giving the storm a quick route. Or lack of a jet-stream might make the storm wander. Low pressure troughs can also act as roadways to guide a storm. Just as the Bermuda High can form and keep hurricanes from turning north.

In other words there are a lot of factors.

106 Hurricanes kill mature trees, so the government should ban them. Despite their Native American name (Carib "huracan"), they are tree-killers. In fact, before the saw, they were the number-one tree-killers in the hurricane areas. Bad hurricanes. If the government would just take action, we could save the trees.

So, to show you that i am very fair, remember the geller shooting. I alerted Ace on twitter that geller had said a media source had threatened to expose her family.

Anyway, Trump had made ,comments that he didn't like what geller did, that he was for free speech but against taunting. So i tweeted at him to fuck off and that he was an idiot. I still never liked that stance.

However, many conservative fighters, such as Laura Ingraham made similar comments. I fall fully on Mark Steyn's view of this.

However, think about it as a politician. Asking everyone to be respectful one's religion IS the perfect answer. I think islam is evil, but i have no shot at running the country and as pres you represent muslims too.

I am willing to look past cruz doing an oped with rino paul ryan pimping TPA and TPP and TPIP. I can handle donald not getting my exact position on geller. Purity tests would fail every candidate, and a shitton would go before Trump!

Were it not for the timing of the event, a remake of Groundhog Day set in Florida at the height of hurricane season would be an endless loop.

Bill Murray wakes up the morning that the hurricane will hit. Later that day, he is killed in the storm but then he recycles back to that morning.

No character development. No failed attempts at romancing Andie McDowell. No intellectual or cultural development.

The dressed-in-black artsy-fartsy crowd would lap it up. "Nature's inhumanity to man, man!"

Wonder where the cattle stand on this issue.

Right now, I think many Americans are 'Ready for Anything' that can fix this mess.

Yeah, this.

I grew up in blizzard country. You can out-last a blizzard, with enough fuel and foodstuffs.

Hurricanes, though . . . on an island . . . connected by a series of bridges . . . well --

Well . . . I have a degree in civil engineering, and I took structures. I had no idea what I was doing in that class, and I still passed it with a C grade.

Then I imagine all of those engineers out there designing bridges, knowing structures every bit as well as I did. And then I imagine those bridges being hit by hurricanes repeatedly.

And then I contemplate living out in the ocean, at the very end of a long, long string of those bridges.

And I understand why Jimmy Buffet drank so many margaritas.

384 Rumors have been confirmed per Bloomberg. The ChiComs are selling Ts (Treasuries, that is). The little crash and the resulting flight to safety (Ts, of course) may have given them a little bid to sell into. They are selling them for dollars which they need for their own forex ops in support of the yuan.

They figure they've dumped about $100B in the last couple weeks. Figure about 20bps upward pressure on T yields per $100B of Chicom dumping. (Note the Chicoms hold a lot of our debt through proxies, allowing them to do shit like this on the QT, a least at first).

This dump may be what prevented yields from dropping so much. Anyway, paging QuEeen Janet, your support of Uncle debt may be needed. Mr. Scott ready the printing presses.

Does anyone have iPad Air that for all day wants to shut down almost constantly? I thought it was this Mercury browser because I lost ampersands when it was last updated, along with paragraphs spaces between them.
I keep note of anytime I start using something different on my face and had this completely shut off for two hours. I turned back on to add to my note it wants to shut down! I have free space and wonder if it may be IOS update I did last week?
Anyone?
Thank you.

Just doing a quick google search, some people suggest:

A ) Disabling any new apps or any apps that take up a lot of memory

B ) Reset reboot: when it shuts down next, wait for a minute then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button And the Home button for 10 seconds until the logo boots.

C ) Factory reset: save all your data, files, music, etc. Then follow the Factory reset steps.

Also, I know that in the case of smart phones a constant reboot can be a sign of a bad battery. If none of the steps above work, it sounds like you're going to have to take it to an Apple Store or call customer support for a replacement.

436 These storms are unpredictable.
We live inland from the gulf by 300 miles and usually just get strong winds or heavy rain, yet Opal knocked our power out for three days and then again We left on a canoe camping trip when Andrew was predicted to go away from us and got stranded in a tent on an island for two days, not bad days though sat in the tent together and cooked eggs and steak outside the tent prior to the break in the weather which allowed us to pack up and get back to the world.
Most are just rain storms a few are more serious.
I watch them when they aim this way.
