Failure Theater, Act V, scene iii: Bob Corker Announces It's "Unlikely" GOP Can Stop Iran Deal

Well slap my face with a fish and call me Swedish.

Oh you think the Dems will have the votes to block the GOP's override of Obama's veto?

Ha-ha, you're so yesterday, Squares. Obama won't even have to veto it, because the Stick Together On Every Vote Democrats will have enough votes to even filibuster the GOP's vote against it.

Oh well, we tried! Guess you'll just have to vote for us harder and send us more campaign donations!

You get the same answer as the first question.

So the man asks the bartender, "Say, what's up with the guy with the big orange head?" And the bartender says, "It's an interesting story. Buy him a drink and maybe he'll tell it to you."

So the man walks over and introduces himself and offers to buy a round. The guy with the big orange head says, "Yeah, I'll bet you want to know the story, huh?" To which the man replies, "Sure, if you don't mind."

The man with the big orange head sighs and says, "You know, I've gone over it in my mind a million times...

68 It should be noted that Corker theater is a very special production indeed.

Usually the failure is something the establishment has wanted for a long time and the base doesn't want, but darn it, we couldn't stop. Corker theater is different as it is something I don't think the establishment wanted and the base didn't, instead its a thing the base and establishment both don't want (a nuclear Iran). Its actually mind boggling. Its like the establishment got so used to bending over and assuming the position they just did so even when they didn't have to with no political motivation to do so. Its failure for its own sake. How avant guarde.

A treaty is "an agreement between two countries".

If Congress wants to pretend this Iran deal is not a treaty, it's only for their own purposes.

And if the Corker bill DID treat this like a treaty, then the House would not have been involved at all, and the Senate would need 2/3 votes to APPROVE the deal with no veto possible by Obama.

Instead of that, the Corker bill essentially said, "yep, this is not a treaty. But we're approving it anyways, and to unapprove it, we'll need enough people to override a veto to do so."

ace the other day Sen. Cotton was on with Hewitt and actually said (close approximation) that with such a consequential issue, his Dem colleagues would not filibuster to prevent an actual up/down vote on the substance of the Corker thing.

Uh huh.

Cotton's not a bad guy, of course. But one must wonder. Does he *really* think that?

Dude, it's 2015. Which is about 925 years since the mid-late 90s - probably when the Dems completely departed any normal or mainstream American pattern for a major political party, in terms of both process AND substance.

Call your representative, assuming they are Republican, and tell them you donate to their campaign, but are now moving redirecting those donations to Boehners opponent, you don't care who it is, so that he can be removed from leadership. J.J. Sefton says I need to organize this. Considered it organized if that's what it takes. I can also bless it, send it an uber car, get it a flight to the beach. But I can't call your rep. Does that make sense J.J.?

133 A treaty is "an agreement between two countries".

IN a formal way, yes. This wasn't anything about an agreement though. It was just changing policy toward Iran. What? That's what Obama admitted it was.

Posted by: Lizzy at August 27, 2015 04:33 PM (NOIQH)

They do need the money.

Contributions to candidates have statutory maximums ($3600 maybe?) and it's technically illegal for candidates campaigns to coordinate with their super PACs.

So while the donor class can donate millions to PACs, they can't donate more than the $3600 directly to candidates.

Then there is the whole bundler thing, which sort of circumvents the law but not really.

But anyways, yes, they need SOME money from the people for the actual campaign, even if the big money being spent is by the PACs

Yeah, but "see how much they could get from Iran in exchange for lifting sanctions" would seem to be an "agreement" in the dictionary sense of the word, no?

And since it's the Supreme Leader of Iran "negotiating" (Obamas word) with the President of the US, that would seem to indicate "between countries", right?

So Obamas "agreement" with "Iran" would seem to fulfill all of the qualifications for "treaty".

160 The real reason behind all the posing is that the Sanctions on Iran were made LAW.

Even Mighty Obama with his magic pen can't EO that LAW off the books.

So to cover his mightiness and yet allow the weasels to appear as if they couldn't help it, they crafted a law such that they can vote to stop the removal of sanctions but that Obama can then veto that bill and the Sanctions stop being LAW.

That then goes back to Congress and they can TRY to override Obama's veto so as to keep the Sanctions as LAW but we all know that's not going to happen. At least in the Senate because it takes 2/3 rds to override a veto.

And as predicted after very carefully crafting this law so as to protect them and allow Obama his treaty, they now are weeping and wailing about how they can't stop it and gee whiz ain't life tough.

(remember the cuts that weren't cuts? Yeah something like that little prestidigitation went on here.)

Right, and that's where this is an annoying kabuki crapfest. People get confused with the treaty thing and so on, but all this was is a way to get President Obama able to reverse a law without congress actually voting to reverse the law.

newhandle you are no uneducated idiot, nor a rube - obviously.

But the treaty/not a treaty question is not new, not particularly an Obama issue either. What's even worse, in this case, is that the structure of sanctions erected against Iran over almosta decade was - quite understandably and normally - done via a series of executive orders and international understandings, some but not all codified in legislation by Congress. With reporting requirements and certification/waiver provisions - as ALL such legislation has been written, at least for 3 or 4 decades now.

What's different, distinct, in this case (besides the stakes) is that you have a bad-faith executive branch. Many previous presidents could have tossed away a sound successful policy that had wide congressional support and even some legislative teeth, when such policies were inconvenient. It happened, just for starters, with non-proliferation policy (Syminton Amendment etc.) WRT Pakistan. But the president then didn't just discard a policy using dishonest certifications and waivers.

But they didn't. In fact more often than not they would use Congress as the "bad cop" in further efforts to influence the foreign party.

But we are in a completely different era. Reckless, clueless president, cretinized Beltway elites, useless Democratic Party. It's not even so much the GOP, pathetic as it is, that's the problem *this* time. Even a real opposition party would probably be fairly powerless, in this particular case.

actually newhandle your response to Chi-Town contains some valid points - an opposition party could use whatever levers it has to hand to punish a wayward president, hobble his actual activities on a foreign deal, and esp. educate/propagandize to shape public opinion on the matter.

In fact, this is exactly what the GOP has failed to do on domestic issues, for the most part.

They could do it on the Iran deal, too.

I'll say no more on the subject, and am perfectly content to have it labelled a side-issue, or an academic point - but it is simply the case that the treaty/not-treaty question here is not novel, nor is this case even that clean of an example for those who believe there should be fewer exec. agreements and more treaties.

Congress was content to build the sanctions over the years with a combo of exec. orders and legislation because that was easy and practical - and it assumed a competent good-faith executive on an issue are in which there had been almost no daylight between the two parties in a generation (since the embassy seizure in 1979). All that context is key. It's everything.

like and waste the rest of your 2 years in office sending you 1,000,000

Obama is not negotiating in good faith. He does not have the backing of

You can't throw them out of Washington. You can throw them out of office, but so long as they stay loyal to their class they stay there. Trent Lott is still in Washington. This is why frankly they they really don't give a shit about you.

If you lose office because you held the line on something the party establishment and the lobbyists want, you are a martyr. There is a sweet lobbying gig waiting for you. You basically just move to sit on the other side of the table.

The only way you get sent back to your home town to be a shoe salesmen is if you piss them off.

These guys want to get re-elected. But they don't want to get re-elected that bad. Staying in the good graces of the DC clique is more important than getting re-elected. So long as you're a team player, losing an election is not the end of a career. Piss off the establishment and your career is over.

So you can't really threaten them. They are not beholden to their voters. They probably laugh at this business with voters thinking they can send someone back to Iowa if they get unelected.

316 The trick is keeping emotion out of your line of argument while remaining human and personable in conversation - keeping the spark in your eye, as I think of it.

That's why I try to give people the benefit of the doubt online or when I meet them in person. who knows what they are dealing with or just went through? Maybe they just found out their little girl has bone cancer. Maybe they just got dumped by their sweetheart. I have no idea. People get crazy sometimes, and politics or religion bring out the worst in us, all too often.

Its good to forgive people and be willing to back away. In the past I had a nasty habit of arguing people into a corner where they would start to argue and even believe stuff they might not have, just out of anger and reaction. We don't have to "win" every fight. We aren't even in a fight.

Speaking of Congress and pretending:

Let's remember here that this is the very same Congress who officially legally redefined themselves as "a small business", in order to ensure that their staff members would be able to obtain generous Obamacare insurance subsidies.

Yes, they declared the entire enormous sprawling public Congressional apparatus to be a small private business. They actually did that. Right in broad daylight. Because we're bitter-clinger serfs who have to take it, and they're the people who do whatever the hell they want.

That's exactly what Barky and the Eurotrash shitheads are counting on. That way they get to kill two birds with one stone - Israel takes care of Iran's nuke program and then Barky and the Eurotrash get to isolate, embargo (and maybe even blockade) Israel and squeeze it to death.

But, Barky and the Eurotrash have all their bases covered; if Israel doesn't take out Iran's nukes then Iran will nuke Israel and barky and the Eurotrash will get their wish, anyway.

This was the known strategy of Barky since back in 2008 ... and the Eurscum have been looking for any way to destroy Israel since the War for Independence didn't turn out the way the Euros wanted and Israel actually survived.

Imagine the likes of Fred Malek, who has extensive "hospitality" interests involving hotels. Hotels that are cleaned by subcontractors who openly hire busloads of illegal aliens. Now imagine the Malek types suddenly looking down the shotgun barrel of massive federal fines for e-Verify violations, levied directly against their own holding companies.

Hmmm, I'm not familiar with any $$$ changing hands in 1981 coinciding with the hostage release. Would like to see evidence for that, that's a BFD, I think.

In any case, this debacle is truly sickening. Revolutionary Iran is, by far, the most blood-soaked (American and ally blood) adversary we have faced since WWII (I'm excluding North Vietnam, North Korea/China, as conventional enemies in more/less conventional wars, which were not essentially unprovoked nor carried out beyond a very limited theater).

They are, by far, the most aggressive yet the most careful and clever terror-supporting state (bygone regimes like Saddam's Iraq, Qaddhafi's Libya, now-disintegrating Ba'athist Syria, and the old PLO constellation were all nasty, but none as serious, aggressive, or skilled).

One of the unheralded accomplishments of the Bush years was a scaffolding of fairly effective sanctions (prob. as effective as you could ever get against a country that size with that geography and a trading tradition as ancient as any on the planet). Yes, Dubya dropped the ball by not finally acknowledging the war being waged on us and taking it much more aggressively to Tehran (separate discussion).

But I can't think of any foreign policy/national security reversal/disaster like this since the abandonment of South Vietnam. And this one has far more wide-spread implications and potential than that one.

It frankly amazes me that you even ask this. I wonder how much you understand of the situation to begin with.

Congress passed several laws which imposed sanctions on Iran and froze assets. President Obama started negotiation with Iran to reverse that. The GOP in Congress didn't have to do anything because it was all in his court to get the laws changed. Instead they did this idiotic deal with made it so they had to have a 2/3rds majority to stop his deal from going through.

Benson is very shallow, sort of the perfect representative of the new Beltway lightweight generation of pundits. Not too thoughtful on substance - which is the entire point of the entire enterprise - focused on horse-race crap and inter-party and intra-party ephemera and personalities. (not that only the younger ones are lightweight - Fred Barnes is a classic process-centric bore - but the younger ones like Benson *really* show their lack of background in many of the things they say)

Sorta like some the Beltway sorts we get dropping in here. Confusing the utterly uninteresting and unimportant things - party-centric crap - with the central things - actual governing, state of the country and the world, etc.

CBD, my fault. My damn comments are already 80% over-long so I lose a lot trying to make too many points too concisely.

My point was exactly that Iran represented a uniquely bad and real (not potential) enemy/threat to the US and our allies, unique since WWII. Different than a mostly conventional/Cold War-framework situation like Vietnam (or Korea), obviously.

And I left out that this is entirely unforced, self-inflicted damage. You could say that about Vietnam, but at least .... decade ..... casualties ... social upheaval .... political turmoil .... blah blah blah. Iran? Simple, indefensible, reckless reversal of policy, not the outcome of a national process or trauma.

458 I disagree with you on Benson, I think he's a good writer and smart. Here, he's just wrong in going too inside baseball. There's a time and a place for strategic losses (which he argues this is), sure, if it's in service a bigger win. Overwhelming destruction of your enemies type winning makes strategic losses pale into insignificance.

Unfortunately the GOP loses every fucking time. They never win. And this time the GOP "strategic loss" arms a crazy theocracy who've been killing Americans practically since the day Jimmy Carter put them into power. With NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

This isn't a strategic loss, this is a national security panic. This is Armageddon.

Every hill isn't the hill to die on. No battle is worth everything. If we lose this time we look better in the election....

Benson is always "inside baseball" because that's all he knows - and even that, he doesn't shed much new light on. He's micron-deep on substance. Guess it depends on one's background.

Before I left the Beltway I was fairly astounded at how mediocre most of its prominent people were, and I wasn't the only one so astounded. One more aspect of the gulf between the Beltway (a mindset, not just a geographical location) and the world/country. The punditry is almost as out of touch and focused on "inside baseball" as are the parties.

Meanwhile, actually thoughtful or experienced or responsible citizens look on and are alarmed that almost every aspect of national governance - from monetary policy to national security, lawlessness in many areas to institutional collapse and constitutional dissolution, fiscal insanity to crude racism and race-baiting from the highest office in the land - are off the rails.

490 Son, we live in a world that has bills, and those bills have to be
passed by men with cocktails. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Wisenheimer? I

have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep
for America, and you curse the Corker Bill. You have that luxury. You
have
the luxury of not knowing what I know. That the Corker Bill, while
tragic, probably saved Congressional seats. And my existence, while
grotesque and
incomprehensible to you, saves seats. You don't want the truth because
deep down in places you don't talk about at your red-neck barn-raising
parties, you want me on that bill, you need me on that bill. We use
words like 'colleague', 'bipartisan', 'reach across the aisle'.
We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something -
our jobs.
You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the
inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the
blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the
manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you,
and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you run for office, and vote
with us. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are
entitled to.

605 OK.... please follow the logic here...

The supposed difference between a Treaty, which must be ratified by the Senate, and an executive Agreement, which does not.... is that a Treaty would need supporting legislation to accomplish its goals... while an Executive agreement can be done by JUST the Executive.

One recent disclosure of this treaty, is that we will PAY the Iranians to inspect their own program... millions per year through the IAEA...

As this is taxpayer money, and thus HAS to be appropriated, this will, by default, necessitate legislation....

Thus, making this a full on TREATY...

GOP is TRYING to fail... they are not even TRYING to argue this... it is all Kabuki theatre.
