More Jeb/Trump:
Jeb, Hey, How About Free College Tuition?!
Trump: I'd Like to Raise Taxes on Rich People Like Myself

Jeb's just lighting up the pinball machine today.

However, Trump signaled the other day that he's going to be releasing his own plan on college financing in four weeks, I think he said. Given that Trump seems to be a... how do I put this... Democrat, I expect him to offer up some Free Shit to people too.

But we don't know that yet. What we know, at this moment, is that Jeb has embraced what I call "The Heart of Jeb-ness."

Jeb Bush has a fantastically awful idea when it comes to college education. He thinks community college students should get "free" tuition for two years. If that's sounds familiar, it's because it’s the exact same thing President Barack Obama proposed in January. Which shows how completely hypocritical Bush is because he came out against Obama’s plan in January.

Oh, but Bush’s plan gets even more #headdesk inducing. He wants universities to PAY BACK students who don't graduate in four years.

If kids can't graduate with a four-year degree in four years, there ought to be some payback to their families or to them, or their got to be some support for the loans they’ve taken out.

This is so fiscally irresponsible and reprehensible, it's not even funny.

Yes, let's subsidize failure and irresponsibility with more billions and billions of taxpayer dollars. We're not incentivizing failure and irresponsibility enough in this society.

If a kid literally wants to take a two year retirement at age 18 and just PARTY HIS FACE OFF for two very expensive college years, we should totally pay for that for him.

In Fairness: Stephen Price Blair suspects Jeb is garbling, in a Jebbish way, a more defensible policy:

This sounds like Jeb heard about the *good* idea of making colleges partially responsible for student loans, and just couldn't wrap his head around it.

That is, put colleges on the hook for non-graduating students and their unpaid loans, so they are incentivized to only enroll students who actually want to learn, and aren't merely diploma-mills-without-the-actual diplomas.

I imagine this part he'll clarify tomorrow.

Still -big huge new entitlement on those first two years of college, huh? Nothin' like asking a truck driver to pay for the college education of the son of a dentist.

...

Somewhat less egregious, but still troubling, is Doctor Populist himself offering up tax increases on the rich.

Republican front-runner Donald Trump began to flesh out his economic vision for America, and it includes raising taxes on the wealthy....

"I would change it. I would simplify it," Trump told hosts Mark Halperin and John Heilemann from the lobby of Trump Tower on New York's 5th Ave. Specifically, Trump targeted hedge fund profits, which are currently taxed at a lower rate than regular income. ....

"I would take carried interest out, and I would let people making hundreds of millions of dollars-a-year pay some tax, because right now they are paying very little tax and I think it's outrageous," Trump said. "I want to lower taxes for the middle class."

Asked whether his proposed changes meant he was prepared to raise taxes on himself, the billionaire framed his answer in terms of fairness.

"That's right. That's right. I'm OK with it. You've seen my statements, I do very well, I don't mind paying some taxes. The middle class is getting clobbered in this country. You know the middle class built this country, not the hedge fund guys, but I know people in hedge funds that pay almost nothing and it's ridiculous, OK?"

Eh. Make up your own minds. Personally, I have been extremely angry at the Donor Class for beating the shit out of the grassroots with every dime they have, completely spurning the concept of an alliance -- in which I agree to adopt some of your agenda, and you agree in turn to adopt some of mine -- to pursue a wholly mercenary agenda that serves themselves exclusively, destroying grassroots challengers at every opportunity.

Personally, I will not weep if the Donor Class takes a haircut. That might remind them next time that we in the grassroots only agree to their agenda to the exact extent they agree to ours.

I know that's not a popular sentiment -- especially with really good conservatives who aren't to blame for the current state of affairs -- but it's what I feel.

I feel badly used in this "alliance." I feel like a booty call for the Donor Class, and I would not mind them learning a lesson about what happens to political turncoats.

Plus, frankly, the super-rich are by and large liberal, except for their resistance to taxes on themselves, so the hell with them. Since they want to enact most of the Democrats' agenda, they can get their protection from tax hikes from the Democrats, too. One-stop shopping, boys. Enjoy!

However, people need to understand you're getting a different kind of Republican with Trump, and by a "different kind of Republican," I mean a Democrat who wants to restrict immigration.

Yes, I do think he will have cross-over appeal to downscale Democrats. But he will have this appeal not for the reasons Reagan did -- Reagan pitched a conservative philosophy -- but for the reasons the typical Democrat can reach Democrat voters, that is, because he's pitching Democracy policy goals.

If we're cool with that, fine, but we better make sure we're cool with that.

There may be some good political and strategic reasons to do this, but we just spent 7 years tearing our hair out over a guy determined to expand the welfare state at any cost; you all better be chill with the idea of having a president from your own party pushing to expand it.

Because it's Popular, and you can't spell popular without Populist. Well, at least you need a lot of the same letters.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio says that Trump won't be president because we're not an angry nation, which is just so adorable.

10 Burst the college bubble. The Pell grants and easy money are doing nothing but subsidizing the lives of socialist professors and an ever expanding college bureaucracy. If kids had to pay hard money for college, they would spend their money on degrees that produced jobs and they would be more discriminating on where the money went. As it stands now, its not their money. Plus, not every kid needs to go to college. Talk to Mike Rowe. The subsidization of college is the cause of the inflated costs. Pop the bubble.

This sounds idiotic to you and me but to college students and guys afterward with a big loan debt its what they have been yelling for years.

I have a friend who went to college, got a degree in political science, then found his degree was useless and is working in a lab testing dairy products for efficiency now. He was so pissed at the college for charging so much and him getting nothing out of it.

He blamed them for his failure to find good work in a given field. I pointed out they did their job and didn't promise anything else but an education, how are they at fault?

But that's the mindset. Its not fair. They charged so much and I'm in debt. They should pay me back.

18 Is this something different from Trump's fit-it-on-a-postcard tax plan?

I though the idea was the rate would be lowered to 20%, but there would be no deductions of any kind. Which as a practical matter *does* mean the high income bracket pays more since they don't have as many options for getting out of it, but what they seem to pay (the quoted rate) goes down.

144 10 Burst the college bubble.
Posted by: california red at August 26, 2015 07:29 PM (q6yxu)

This right here. Government student aid is nothing more than a taxpayer subsidy to the education industry. The more aid there is, the higher tuition rates go.

Once upon a time it was possible for students to work their way through college by taking odd jobs like waiting tables or delivering pizzas. And students who show promise can get scholarships.

Get rid of the government loans and grants, and colleges will be forced to lower their tuition to what people can actually afford to pay. That will in turn force them to cut out the deadwood, like Marxist professors and "studies" programs.

168 I gave more money to Carly Fiorina's campaign today--you know, since I'm a Republican, which the top-polling GOP primary candidates seem not to be.

If Trump wins the Republican nomination, I'll vote for him just as I voted for previous, equally weak GOP nominees, but after that I'm no longer a Republican. I go independent and won't look back.

I hold out little hope for the formation of a viable third party, which is what happened after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1852, when the Whigs refused to fight and played go-along and get-along with the Democrats. The Republican Party came about because credible leaders led the way. I just don't see that kind of leadership now.

Populism is not what is "popular," it is what appeals to the general public - that is, the uninformed, ignorant, stupid, low information assholes that don't read the HQ.

254 Reagan managed to bring the low information democrats into the conservative tent by making conservative appeals that aligned with populist sentiment - he identified the emotional issues that the uninformed public could react to, and offered conservative solutions.

This is the best of Right side politics. This expands the party and moves the public to the Right.

336 This just in: in response to tax returns that show he donated just 1.5 percent of his income to charity, Jeb Bush responded that doesn't include money he raised for the Bush Family Foundation. You couldn't make this guy up. The dude is out before he loses in Florida.

And yeah, Trump is
probably a big government Democrat. But he does at least seem pretty
adamant about stopping illegal immigration, that alone puts him ahead of
many of the big government Republicans he's running against. So, I don't know. I guess I just wish one of the 'serious' candidates would grow a fucking pair and start hammering that issue like Trump does.

I know that's not a popular sentiment -- especially with really good conservatives who aren't to blame for the current state of affairs -- but it's what I feel.

I feel badly used in this "alliance." I feel like a booty call for the Donor Class, and I would not mind them learning a lesson about what happens to political turncoats

uh hmm, while i believe that corporations are getting their cake and eating it too.
look they are the ones for open borders , and i don't believe for one hoot it's about the poor and desperate peoples needing a hand into america they are about the bottom dollar .while the tax payer pays much of the costs for the corporations to have cheaper labor.
so they are taxed out of Massachusetts or NY-SF because of their advocating for the policies that make it impossible because of the same policies from govt THEY themselves demanded.

and then scrammming to another country to 'do business' because even Cheaper labor.

i'm just having a diffficult time being sympathetic to it at this popint.

And if the Republicans are willing to write any of OUR ideas out , in fact join in the left games while driving the country fiscally off the cliff.

well Trump in that light seems while not very Republican ideology wise.

Official version around here is that Long was shot by the son of a political opponent and died because he wanted HIS doctor to operate on him, who didn't get there in time.

The spitballed theory I had after seeing that area of the LA state capitol building is that it could have been a ricochet of one of the bodyguards' shots, an accident while trying to stop being the assassination. The corridor where he was shot is marbled and there are areas claimed to be imperfections which look suspiciously like bullet holes.

chemjeff @358, honestly dunno, but I doubt it.

Don't recall the complete swallowing the student loan program causing even the minimum level of pro forma mail-it-in GOP "opposition".

Others have correctly noted that the education bubble and hyperinflation are 1) entirely a function of guvamint subsidy and 2) a gigantic diversion of resources to some of the most destructive elements in society (fascist academics). Bigger than the also-catastrophic subsidy of "green" parasitism and rent-seeking from "environmental" spending/regulation/lawsuit collaboration.

Actually *some* of the inflation in tuition might be attributable to a new element, the foreign one (uh, Chinese) that is willing to pay a big tab - and mostly provides high-quality students in the bargain. But higher ed's inflation rate exceeded any other sector's for decades now, even that of medical "insurance" - which of course had much lower actual inflation than most assume, apart from the distortion of misregulation and stunted markets.

You can take that in two ways.

You may not like him as a leader, but he is in fact leading; drawing more attention, support, and opposition to his position/movement.

++++++++++++Make the H1b1 visa fee equal to 50% the average wage for the worker being sought - make it cost more to hire alien skilled workers. This should not be an issue because the employer says he cannot find ANYBODY to fill the job already and their only real choice is to hire a headhunter to buy off competitors employees (obviously for higher wages).

398 If you want to regain a more conservative nation we may have to use big government to crush big government.

This is why I am for sticking the universities and colleges in this country with the student loan bill, but we will also have to fixed their prices, tuition and fees to prevent them from jacking up costs and blaming conservatives for the increases to go to college. So you stick them with the debt, and then nail them with some good old fashioned FDR inspired cost controls from government.

I know none of that sounds conservative, but the ends will justify the means once big education gets crushed the progs will no longer have the power to teach students the glories of communism. They won't be able to pay for it. To me this is a strategic no brainer. It is a handout using money from the progressive left...not taxpayers.

The leftwing professors want communism and big government, so lets give it to them. They can pay for someone else's education.

We don't win wars being Mr. Noble...and we won't win them politically either.

We live in such a lawless, failed state it is easy to forget basic things. Employers have to sign affidavits to the effect an H1B visa is necessary because there isn't sufficient native labor. Now we have the spectacle of Disney, Facebook and others having soon-to-be replaced American employees train foreign workers obtained via the H1B visa program. In the vast majority of the world this would lead to things blowing up and burning down. It very well may not be far off here, and the political class better hope it gets off as lightly as Trump at this point. He's a warning shot across the bow, and this is real people. Pay attention.

Posted by: K Street Sleazebag and Frequent Fox Guest at August 26, 2015 09:20 PM (pq97T)

401 Large employers used to rely on "training and classes" to get the majority of their workforces up to speed on what they needed to know to function productively in the workplace. Those employers typically used IQ tests to determine which employees were worth the investment of training dollars. (Just as did the military.)

----

In two decades, I have never, ever, ever worked at a job that a bright, motivated person couldn't have picked up with about six weeks of on-the-job training. Yet every single one of my jobs has REQUIRED applicants to have a college degree before they'd even look at your resume.

405 Ace, from his OP:

"However, people need to understand you're getting a different kind of Republican with Trump, and by a "different kind of Republican," I mean a Democrat who wants to restrict immigration.

"Yes, I do think he will have cross-over appeal to downscale Democrats. But he will have this appeal not for the reasons Reagan did -- Reagan pitched a conservative philosophy -- but for the reasons the typical Democrat can reach Democrat voters, that is, because he's pitching Democracy policy goals.

"If we're cool with that, fine, but we better make sure we're cool with that."

This is the nut of it, and most people both understand it and are cool with it. This has become a one issue race, out-of-control immigration, and all else doesn't matter to many of us.

As imperfect a vessel as Trump is, we trust him on this one thing, and it is all that matters. If another candidate could make the same case and be believable, that person could be the frontrunner in time. The problem is the last part after the conjunction. We don't believe any of them, even Cruz due to his past support of even more H1B visas.

While it is secondary, most of the others also will be Democratic-lite (in the cases of Kasich, Rubio, and Bush, no-so-lite). It's all a matter of degree.

If someone can both convince us that they will curtail or freeze all immigration and reduce the size and scope of the government, they can beat Trump and whoever the Democrats put up. It just doesn't appear likely to happen after two months.

Posted by: Bryce lies matter at August 26, 2015 10:02 PM (pq97T)

406 401 That is what I loved about the military. You received training for the position that you were doing. Did you learn everything you needed to know? Of course you didn't, but you came out of training with some basic grasp of the concept. Real learning comes in doing it. It is one thing to discuss how to fire a cannon, it is a whole different thing to pull the lanyard and feel the blast.

I see want ads for positions where the company wants the applicant to have years of experience working with the proprietary processes of the company before even considering a person. Then they come out and say they cannot find any qualified applicants, so they need millions more H1B visas to bring in people who don't know what to do either, but are much much cheaper.

So, plagerize like heck in college and become president too! Or get high, be clean and articulate and be Prez with the good teeth guy.

PS. If you aren't in engineering or computer science go to Burger King for your next job???

410 So what is stopping Trump from pulling out his checkbook? The government accepts voluntary contributions.

411 The object of the game is to nominate a conservative. Distractions from this goal have gotten beyond frustrating over the years. Populism is not conservatism. When we nominate a conservative, we win. When we don't, however attractive it seems, Lucy always pulls away the football. How hard is it to learn this?

412 What would be the effect of raising taxes on hedge funds?

There would be some consequence. Would it pass along costs to me?

Because the rich will get their money one way or another.

As entertaining as Trump is... I am finding the show entertaining.

I just hope I'm not paying for the entertainment with the consequence of Hillary or Bernie fake taking that oath.

413 Isn't this the same blog that was supporting the rock ribbed conservative Mitt Romney? If Trump is a Dem then Mitt was a commie.

414 Between Trump, McCain, and Romney, the most left-wing is....Trump.

That said, he will never be president. If he's the nominee, we'll end up with Biden, Hillary, Sanders, or whoever else the Dems nominate for at least four years.

The American people as a whole might like watching a bigoted, ignorant, Archie Bunker-clone clown show for entertainment, but they sure as hell won't elect him president - and the polls show it.

On top of that, the GOP won't change one damn bit. They'll point to the big Trump loss and say, "See? See? We let you wacko birds nominate one of your own, and he lost in a landslide!!! Time for the adults to take control again!!!"

Nevermind the fact that Trump is "conservative" as Rosie O'Donnell. It doesn't matter. The GOPe (I hate that term) will club the base with it mercilessly.

415 This ridiculous idea of Jeb's is just more No Child Left Behind -- now at the college level (which makes sense, as now a four year degree is a glorified high school diploma, even in the hard sciences it is getting this way).
It gets put into place, and fear not, people will graduate (they may be uneducated morons, but they'll graduate). The colleges already do this -- I know, I was an instructor; it's been a racket for quite a while: pass people out of the gen. ed. courses or lose your job; they have seats to fill with new students (aka. new money). All the while we gutted our trade school program, gutted the humanities (which used to teach the canon and gave someone a sense of the civilization/culture one was in -- an important thing -- perhaps a glimpse at the wider world around -- also an important thing; and at the very least created graduates in the hard sciences who could think critically and write/speak well...anyone who tells me "hard sciences is the bestest" I have a phrase for you: climate change science, and one name: John Holdren...I don't want to hear any more about how great those subjects are; they produce mutts like all the rest, because...that post you put below.)

416 As for Trump: we are in a world of fudge, and are obsessed with America's version of Beppe Grillo. Congratulations! We're now at the level of Italian politics (without the Italians' ability to survive in it). Perhaps it's for the best, we've been there without knowing it for a while now -- is not Bill Clinton just a pasty faced, self-important Silvio? (although in many regards Silvio was less dangerous, less corrupt because less evil, and more truthful -- let that sink in).
However, Beppe is good for entertainment...and also Beppe sometimes makes the tell on the truths nobody likes to acknowledge; such as why Beppe is so popular in the first place (and he is liked by many at the moment). So Beppe has his role, and plays his part for a reason (and one of them is that he gets some compensation for acting the part because no matter what type of clown a person is, none of them work completely for free; they at least have a tip jar) -- maybe the people who are so much wiser than me should start wondering why Beppe showed up now, and who put him on the payroll?

417 Here in California, we used to have two years free community college for legal state residents. But that was when the state was governed responsibly and politicians were concerned about "wasting tax payer's money" and the idea of letting citizens of foreign nations living here illegally to even go to the school would not even have been considered.

Now American citizens must get in line with foreign nationals to pay tuition and ridiculous book prices to get an education in colleges funded by "tax payer's money"...

The state even provides grants and there are scholarships for "the undocumented" handed out that American citizens can't even apply for and others that white Americans do not qualify for because of their race.

418 Hey, guess what? I don't even give a shit about taxes anymore, I want the commie-lib GOP Establishment Dead Elephants blown sky-high, and I don't care which "Republican" does it, just so long as somebody does it. The more the better.

419 What these candidates NEED to do is cap tuition. No more endless increases to subsidies (taxpayers' wallet) just to have the colleges increase tuition higher. No more $3 million fountains (unless privately donated). No more health spas. If the government likes to cap people's earnings, start with the Board of Trustees.

For far too long, universities get subsidies to decrease tuition. So, the university just absorbs the subsidy and claims that tuition increases are necessary. GSEs, like Sallie Mae, change high interest in variable rates and segment the loans by year. This all has to stop. No more subsidies for universities and endless tuition hikes.

420 Jeb seems to think he is running for the Dem nomination, which wouldn't be a bad idea btw. I mean the field is wide open.
