Jeb Bush: Please Don't Vote For Me

So, yeah.

Jeb Bush says that Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, who was escorted out of a press conference held by Donald Trump on Tuesday night, should have been "treated with a little more respect."

"I think people with the press ought to be treated with a little more respect and dignity," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, Mark Haperin asks Trump about... religion.

As you could guess, this goes not so well. It's not terrific, as Trump would say.

Mr. Trump, who is your favorite apostle?

-- I couldn't say, they're all great guys, really super guys, great people.

But specifically, do you have a favorite apostle?

-- Specifically...? I don't know, I want to say, Ringo, maybe? Is Ringo in the mix?

No Mr. Trump, Ringo is not in the mix.

-- Are you sure? Because I hear a lot of buzz about Ringo.

Not in the Bible, though.

-- Well then who's talking up Ringo?

I don't know, Mr. Trump. Cher, maybe? Okay, shifting gears...

-- Oh thank God.

Which is your favorite book of the Bible, Mr. Trump?

-- Oh again with this.

So: Favorite book of the Bible?

-- Yes it's a great book, really fantastic, with the words and sentences and all.

But *which* book is your favorite?

-- The Bible. What did I say already?

But there are more than one book in the Bible. Which is your favorite book?

-- Oh my favorite book of the Bible. Now I understand, yes.

So which is it?

-- Uhh.. Well I love them all, with the wine and the waters and the joy and all that good stuff, but I guess, if you had to pin me down, I guess my favorite book is the one where the blonde girl gets the dragons. What's the name of that book?

Um... I think you mean a Game of Thrones.

-- Yes, that's it. That's my favorite book of the Bible. But so bloody!

Not a book of the actual Bible, though.

-- Is it in the Jewish Bible?

No.

-- Well it's something either way, I'll tell you that. Well, I might not know a lot of specific facts about the Bible, but I try to live by the Golden Rule: "Winter is coming."

No... that's Game of Thrones again.

-- No I'm pretty sure it's a verse in the Bible. Like, "And Jacob said, feast well and bundle up, for Winter is Coming."

Nope, still just Game of Thrones.

-- Well I don't know where it comes from but it's an incredible philosophy. Carl Icann lives his life by it. Very rich man. Owns a lot of furs and space heaters.

14 I'm shocked, shocked that Donald Trump can't name his favorite verse in the Bible. I mean, it's almost as if he's not a devout Christian.

Of course, it would be awesome if he would memorize this answer: "'Jesus wept,' because it's short, and I can remember it."

I read the Bible every day. I'm terrible with chapter and verse. I can quote a few verses, but I don't remember their book/chapter/verse number. In other places, I can say "Book so-and-so chapter such-and-such says..." and then paraphrase, but not quote.

If the concern is about Trump's ability to appeal in the general election to the group of people who in most of Europe would be called Christian democrats, Trump should be able to take advantage of the pink fascist assault on religious freedom while assuring that his judicial appointments will hold to interpretations of the Constitution opposed to Roe v. And his stupid Chinese anchor baby comment...again he seems to be going full-tilt Latino and not really understanding that Asians are more likely to vote Republican.

Of course, they're disproportionately tied to the legal immigration system, so they'll probably resent his pandering more than anybody else.

103 Mookie quotes the Bible (Wash Times 12/10/14):

President Obama referred to the Bible on Tuesday as he was speaking about immigration reform in Nashville, but he confused some of the lines and even threw in a proverb that appears nowhere in the religious text.

"The good book says, don't throw stones in glass houses," he said. "Or... make sure we're looking at the log in our eye before we are pointing out the mote in other folks' eyes."

The expression "they that live in glass houses should not throw stones" is a proverb of unknown origin that has been used in various form for centuries, The Washington Post reported. It does not appear in the Bible.

Not a book of the actual Bible, though.

No.

Yes, and no.

I think if he were an out-and-out atheist, he'd have trouble. Maybe if were one of the more vocal sort of agnostic. But his actual answer isn't bad. Indeed, a lot of Christians would agree- their "favorite" verse (really: passage) is a personal thing, and they might not want to discuss it on national TV.

Still others will see this (as I do) as a very polite way of saying FYNQ.

I don't think this is a "knock it out of the park" answer. I don't even think it's a particularly *good* answer. But neither do I think it is a very bad answer.

And I think you know where I stand on the whole religion thing.

Here in Commiefornia, the remote state parks are full of wildcat weed plantations run by Mexican illegals.

These guys slash and burn to create growing areas. They divert streams to water their crop, destroying the downstream beds, and drench the parkland in the nastiest sort of herbicides and insecticides. They cause huge erosion problems. They poach for food, shooting out of season and without licences.

You would think that in Commiefornia, where anything that damages the environment is hugely unpopular, that there would be an enormous outcry, and that state government resources would be massively mobilized. Gaiahurt! Doubleplusungreen!

Yet for some reason there is an odd stifling silence on the topic. Could it be because these things are being done by an officially protected class?

Biden was rambling on in his idiotic way about how FDR had gone on television and soothed the nation after the 1929 stock market crash. Couric was sitting next to him, nodding like one of those bobble-head toys. Except that FDR wasn't president in 1929 (Hoover was), and only a handful of Americans even owned a television in 1929. But there sat Couric, acting like Biden was some kind of sage. And none of the next day's articles about the interview mentioned all the verifiably false and stupid crap that had flowed out of Slow Joe's mouth; they all just praised Couric for her penetrating and insightful interview. 323 280 I once wrote an essay on the similarities between Christianity and Marxism. Didn't win me any friends, even though I still think I made some very good points (such as that quote, for one).

The main difference is God. It's a critical difference, like imagining the solar system without the sun.
Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk

Of course there are differences - - that goes without saying -- but the two philosophies are often depicted as being polar opposites.

But I think at the core of each, beneath the surface, is the reassurance that however unfair things are in this world, things will be exactly reversed in the next -- the afterlife in Christian, and the post-Revolution society in Marxism.

Specifically, both philosophies champion the poor over the rich and state quite overtly that the rich may think they're the top of the social heap now, but in the future poor people will be the top of the heap, and rich people will be sad and miserable. In Christianity, this means either in the afterlife or after Armageddon, and in Marxism is means after a people's revolution. Rich men can't get into heaven, and rich men will be tilling potatoes in the Siberian tundra.

Sort of. Marxists see this in terms of the political and economic. Christianity sees this in terms of pride, humility, personal gain in this life vs a life of service, etc. Its about the soul, not the possessions. Its that a very wealthy person often got that way by selling their soul or focusing on wealth over God. The rich often feel self sufficient as if they do not need salvation, and that makes it harder for them to see the truth.

It's a lot less confusing when you realize that Jesus' point was that "none shall come to the Father but through the Son."

The vast majority of his teaching was about how even things we think of as "good" and "holy" aren't good enough to get us into heaven. For the rich- who are very comfortable on this earth- it can be very hard to accept that you need anyone else for any reason.

Indeed, the part just before that- when he tells the Rich Young Ruler "then only one thing you lack, sell all you have and give it to the poor, then come follow me," was more-or-less him calling out RYR and saying, "No, you haven't kept all the commands." And the RYR turned away, sad.

351 And as far as my favorite Old Testament passage goes, and you can probably guess this, but I have always loved Deut. 7.1-2; 20.16-18. That's the part of the Old Testament where the Israelites get some impolite questions during a real estate transaction gone bad.

And that happens! Wow, it really does. I've done more real estate deals probably than anyone, except maybe Moses, I mean he really did some serious deals in a tough market and I gotta give him the respect he deserves, but-- next to Moses -- I really have done more deals than anyone.

So, tough questions. Really impolite, unfair questions. Moses was kind of floored, really, I mean, why were the Canaanites so hostile? Well, God had enough, which I think is totally justified, and he told Moses to start cleaning the problem right up. And Moses, next to me, is really the best manager I can think of, and he did.

I really urge you, and that Mexican guy over there, and my good friend Roger Ailes, and maybe the Murdoch family, and anyone else who wants to get a window onto my soul, anyway I really urge you to read some of my favorite Deuteronomy passages.

Especially Megyn Kelly, who by the way, came back from her unscheduled vacation looking a little hefty, if you know what I mean.

So why is he being asked any type of religious question.

367 You would think that in Commiefornia, where anything that damages the environment is hugely unpopular, that there would be an enormous outcry, and that state government resources would be massively mobilized. Gaiahurt! Doubleplusungreen!

Yet for some reason there is an odd stifling silence on the topic. Could it be because these things are being done by an officially protected class?

Yes, Victor Hanson has written a lot about that. Legal citizens and legal businesses in California have to spend billions every year complying with all the burdensome state environmental regs, so that California can stay pristine.

Meanwhile, when an illegal Mexican in CA wants to get rid of his old broken-down washing machine, he just throws it in the back of his pick-up, drives over to the nearest lake, and tosses it in. And nobody in CA says boo.

Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.

Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets."

401 Specifically, both philosophies champion the poor over the rich and state quite overtly that the rich may think they're the top of the social heap now, but in the future poor people will be the top of the heap, and rich people will be sad and miserable. In Christianity, this means either in the afterlife or after Armageddon, and in Marxism is means after a people's revolution. Rich men can't get into heaven, and rich men will be tilling potatoes in the Siberian tundra.

There are some important differences:

Marxism actually champions the proletariat over everyone: peasants are as worthless as bourgeoisie (Lenin even considered them such). Both must be eliminated because only the 19th century factory worker can live in the future.

Marxism also has a system of morality based on the identities of the offender and the offendee: if a proletariat kills a child for the revolution, it is morally good. If a bourgeoisie kills a child, it is an atrocity. Christianity has a consistent morality: treat all people as if they were Jesus himself.

But I would argue that Marxism is essentially Christianity without God: it is the fetishization of helping the poor taken to the extreme, replacing God with worship of the poor. Probably why the current Pope is indistinguishable from a Marxist.

But that's the nature of evil - not necessarily that it is the exact opposite of good, but that it takes what is good and perverts it into something else.

So Justice becomes Social Justice. Love becomes Free Love. Charity becomes Welfare.

Those are the most dangerous evils, the ones that look like good things but hold venom within.

451 I lean towards the harder interpretation because of the reaction:

"Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?"

Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
Posted by: ConservativeMonster Unbarreled at August 26, 2015 07:04 PM (0NdlF)

The meaning of the entire parable, as I understand it, is that it is impossible for any man to, by taking any action whatsoever, to gain entrance to Heaven.

It simply is not possible for any human being to "earn" his way into Heaven. Can not be done. Period, full stop.

The only way to Heaven is through God.

"Saved by the grace of God alone."

Thus endeth the lesson.

From the Psalm of David

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.

Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.

They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.

But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

474 The discussion of the camel/eye of the needle simply highlights the stupidity of asking somebody what their "favorite Bible verse" is.

The verses do not stand on their own. They are placed into context by the text around them, and the meaning of the verses is shaped by that context.

"Am I my brother's keeper" was said by the murderer of his brother, for instance (something our dolt of a President either does not know or, more chillingly, does know.)

479 Ahem:

"The "Eye of the Needle" has been claimed to be a gate in Jerusalem, which opened after the main gate was closed at night. A camel could only pass through this smaller gate if it was stooped and had its baggage removed. This story has been put forth since at least the 15th century, and possibly as far back as the 9th century. However, there is no widely accepted evidence for the existence of such a gate.[4][5] There is actually a small gate in Jerusalem called "eye of a needle". It can be found in the Russian Church, in the Old City of Jerusalem, but was built in the 16th century, and clearly has nothing to do with this passage."

It is a bogus explanation.

The whole context was specifically about rich guys not being able to enter heaven -- J was responding to rich guy who was unwilling to give away all his possessions and wealth. J said, basically, if you remain rich, you cannot be saved.

The words are plain. The context confirms the words' meaning.

You realize the Beatitudes were Jesus's version of click-bait, right?

Sure, I can pick and choose verses that make Christianity seem to be anti-rich-people, but when taken as whole, it's just not there. I can pick and choose verses that "prove" little green men from outer space.

Shortly after the verse you mention (called the Blessings and Woes in Luke), he then talks about how the rich can receive reward in heaven: give to those who cannot repay, show mercy.

The point of the blessings and woes (or beatitudes, as they're called in Matthew), is basically "hey, wake up people." He tells the poor, the downtrodden, "hey, this is how 'they' treated those chosen by God (the prophets), so don't let it get you down when they treat you the same way. God sees you, and he'll give you your reward."

Then he turns to the rich and says, "Oh, but *you.* You've already been comforted, you've already been well fed. You've got your reward already."

He's setting the stage for the rest of the lesson: show love to your enemies (I hate that part), give to those who cannot give back, show mercy to the needy, don't condemn others - you don't know what their struggles are.

Posted by: dogfish at August 26, 2015 07:25 PM (jWtyG)

The media should ALWAYS be a part of the story.

The "objective" media is a myth. There is no such thing. The closest you can get is to clearly state your own biases and preconceptions, and let somebody else apply the appropriate filter to what you're saying.

Back in the day, this was the norm in the media--there were Democrat newspapers and Republican newspapers, and everybody knew which was which. But today, "journalists" want to pretend that they've "evolved beyond" such crass bias.

They have not.

529 Yeah I'm not really sure what the press is hoping to pull with Trump. Nobody going to church figures Trump to be the best Christian guy out there or the most faithful churchgoer.

And the media trying to push a holier than thou position just cements the very crowd they court against them. Fools. Nothing but stupid tools.

Yes, because they HATE that Trump brings up their most loathed Book. How dare he proudly declare his love of the Bible? Why isn't he cowering in a corner along with the bakers who won't make gay cakes and all the other Christians they have side-lined. How DARE he?! So, they think they can make the Bible into a weapon against the man who says he loves it. Trump didn't answer specifics because he loathes the game the media's playing.
Halperin wouldn't know a Bible verse if one bit him in the ass. In fact, Trump could've answered that his favorite verse was "Donald 1:1" and Halperin would've thought it was an actual verse, cuz he wouldn't know! When's the last time Halperin cracked open a Bible?

561 Well, just more garbage from Henny and Hacky... two progressive slim ball "journalists" who make a lot of money screwing over conservatives and the right.
I remember how Katie Couric interviewed Sarah Palin for 4 days... yes, 4 days solid... asking about abortion, religion, etc. and all the LSM and the dolt lemming other media took one thing to highlight... and to attack Palin about... ignoring all the other questions and answers over 4 days....
Couric "what newspapers, etc. do you read"
Palin, exasperated with Couric since she had just walked off the stage after giving a speech and immediately asked that question at the edge of the stage....
"I read a lot of them, lots of them" and never names any.
And what happens? The entire 4 days of questions and answers is ignored and that one question and answer is blown up to be the big story... repeated over and over for months afterwards as an example of ??? that Palin does not read anything? that she is afraid to say what she reads... as if all she reads are Nazis pamphlets or racist newsletters or comic books. The LSM looked and looked and looked and for some reason blew that one comment into a huge negative about Palin and pushed it for months.
And we all know for a fact that Palin does and did read a lot... both print and online... so, by being peed off at Couric right at that moment, she fell into the trap.
Trump recognized that this sort of question is trap time big time... no matter what verse he said it would not matter...
"he picked a crappy verse" "I don't think that is a good verse" "why would he pick that verse? how about explaining why you like that verse" and on and on and on.
This is just like the Kelly questions... ask something that no matter what the answer, it can be construed as wrong. Screw the media.

Posted by: Billy Jack at August 27, 2015 03:36 AM (rP4wG)

566 Ok, you heard it here first on ACE OF Spades HQ.

Bush will change parties and run as a Democrat. Whatever rules they decide to put in place that prohibit it the R party will remove.

It is very early in the race but Trump's lead is getting to the point where low energy people just don't have the gas in the tank to overcome it.

The GOPe is lost in the woods on how to stop Trump. The backup plan should Trump win the primary, Hillary, is in dire danger of collapsing so the GOPe needs a comparative candidate to win the D primary so that Hillary can be replaced and all will be well.

Either that or the ideas that Jeb is pushing "today" brings about a major shift in the R party.

So it is written, so shall it be done.

Posted by: Drider at August 27, 2015 05:23 AM (6Xbsz)

568 555 >>>Ah, Ace The Atheist ripping Trump for not being religious.

What the hell are you talking about ? I think it's simply wrong to say this "doesn't go well", but Ace is ripping Trump ?

Nonsense. Frankly, I think that's the perfect approach to the media idiots like Halperin. Fuck 'em. Ask a retarded question and get the kind of answer you deserve.

But if Ace is "ripping" Trump here, it's for not being forthright with his answer, although I hardly think there is a single person who would change their opinion of Trump based on his response, or anyone that potentially would change their opinion if he answered the question honestly.

There is, frankly, no legitimate reason or basis for anyone giving one shit about what Trump's favorite book of the bible is, or if he even has one. And, so, you get the answer Trump gave. About as relevant as the question. Again, perfect.

Posted by: deadrody at August 27, 2015 06:54 AM (kj7T1)
