I read the Bible every day. I'm terrible with chapter and verse. I can quote a few verses, but I don't remember their book/chapter/verse number. In other places, I can say "Book so-and-so chapter such-and-such says..." and then paraphrase, but not quote.
So it's not actually as "Bone head[ed]" as it may at first seem.

I think Walker is playing a long game, but we'll see. If he's smart he realizes that the election is more than a year away, so there's no hurry. He can be the one that ends up seeming most competent, ready, presidential, and steady if he handles himself well. Or he might just be a dull, awkward campaigner, who knows?

I think if he were an out-and-out atheist, he'd have trouble. Maybe if were one of the more vocal sort of agnostic. But his actual answer isn't bad. Indeed, a lot of Christians would agree- their "favorite" verse (really: passage) is a personal thing, and they might not want to discuss it on national TV.
Still others will see this (as I do) as a very polite way of saying FYNQ.
I don't think this is a "knock it out of the park" answer. I don't even think it's a particularly *good* answer. But neither do I think it is a very bad answer.
And I think you know where I stand on the whole religion thing.

Here in Commiefornia, the remote state parks are full of wildcat weed plantations run by Mexican illegals.
These guys slash and burn to create growing areas. They divert streams to water their crop, destroying the downstream beds, and drench the parkland in the nastiest sort of herbicides and insecticides. They cause huge erosion problems. They poach for food, shooting out of season and without licences.
You would think that in Commiefornia, where anything that damages the environment is hugely unpopular, that there would be an enormous outcry, and that state government resources would be massively mobilized. Gaiahurt! Doubleplusungreen!
Yet for some reason there is an odd stifling silence on the topic. Could it be because these things are being done by an officially protected class?

They're a pretty ignorant bunch themselves. Remember when Katie Couric did that much-lauded (by other media dopes) interview on Joe Biden's campaign bus during the 2008 campaign? Biden was rambling on in his idiotic way about how FDR had gone on television and soothed the nation after the 1929 stock market crash. Couric was sitting next to him, nodding like one of those bobble-head toys. Except that FDR wasn't president in 1929 (Hoover was), and only a handful of Americans even owned a television in 1929. But there sat Couric, acting like Biden was some kind of sage. And none of the next day's articles about the interview mentioned all the verifiably false and stupid crap that had flowed out of Slow Joe's mouth; they all just praised Couric for her penetrating and insightful interview. It could have been an Onion parody, and nobody would have even noticed the difference.

Of course there are differences - - that goes without saying -- but the two philosophies are often depicted as being polar opposites.
But I think at the core of each, beneath the surface, is the reassurance that however unfair things are in this world, things will be exactly reversed in the next -- the afterlife in Christian, and the post-Revolution society in Marxism.
Specifically, both philosophies champion the poor over the rich and state quite overtly that the rich may think they're the top of the social heap now, but in the future poor people will be the top of the heap, and rich people will be sad and miserable. In Christianity, this means either in the afterlife or after Armageddon, and in Marxism is means after a people's revolution. Rich men can't get into heaven, and rich men will be tilling potatoes in the Siberian tundra.

Its that a very wealthy person often got that way by selling their soul or focusing on wealth over God. The rich often feel self sufficient as if they do not need salvation, and that makes it harder for them to see the truth.

It's a lot less confusing when you realize that Jesus' point was that "none shall come to the Father but through the Son."
The vast majority of his teaching was about how even things we think of as "good" and "holy" aren't good enough to get us into heaven. For the rich- who are very comfortable on this earth- it can be very hard to accept that you need anyone else for any reason.
Indeed, the part just before that- when he tells the Rich Young Ruler "then only one thing you lack, sell all you have and give it to the poor, then come follow me," was more-or-less him calling out RYR and saying, "No, you haven't kept all the commands." And the RYR turned away, sad.

There are some important differences:
Marxism actually champions the proletariat over everyone: peasants are as worthless as bourgeoisie (Lenin even considered them such). Both must be eliminated because only the 19th century factory worker can live in the future.
Marxism also has a system of morality based on the identities of the offender and the offendee: if a proletariat kills a child for the revolution, it is morally good. If a bourgeoisie kills a child, it is an atrocity. Christianity has a consistent morality: treat all people as if they were Jesus himself.
But I would argue that Marxism is essentially Christianity without God: it is the fetishization of helping the poor taken to the extreme, replacing God with worship of the poor. Probably why the current Pope is indistinguishable from a Marxist.

The meaning of the entire parable, as I understand it, is that it is impossible for any man to, by taking any action whatsoever, to gain entrance to Heaven.
It simply is not possible for any human being to "earn" his way into Heaven. Can not be done. Period, full stop.
The only way to Heaven is through God.

The verses do not stand on their own. They are placed into context by the text around them, and the meaning of the verses is shaped by that context.

Sure, I can pick and choose verses that make Christianity seem to be anti-rich-people, but when taken as whole, it's just not there. I can pick and choose verses that "prove" little green men from outer space.
Shortly after the verse you mention (called the Blessings and Woes in Luke), he then talks about how the rich can receive reward in heaven: give to those who cannot repay, show mercy.
The point of the blessings and woes (or beatitudes, as they're called in Matthew), is basically "hey, wake up people." He tells the poor, the downtrodden, "hey, this is how 'they' treated those chosen by God (the prophets), so don't let it get you down when they treat you the same way. God sees you, and he'll give you your reward."
Then he turns to the rich and says, "Oh, but *you.* You've already been comforted, you've already been well fed. You've got your reward already."
He's setting the stage for the rest of the lesson: show love to your enemies (I hate that part), give to those who cannot give back, show mercy to the needy, don't condemn others - you don't know what their struggles are.

Trump was just on Hugh Hewitt talking religion. I don't think he's a bible scholar but he never pretends to be.
He isn't entertaining gotcha questions. He refuses to answer them. They are trying to palinize him and he won't play on anything that isn't his comfort zone. Pretty disciplined.

The thing to remember about the Media and their coverage of Republican/conservative candidates and issues is that the media believes their own bullshit concerning what THEY believe about Republicans and conservatives.
They believe all Republicans are knuckle-dragging, redneck, Bible-quoting, gun-toting ignoramuses, led by the nose by Rush Limbaugh and Faux News like a herd of rather stupid and forgetful sheep.
They are in addition totally uninterested in anything which may disabuse them of any portion of that belief.

The media should ALWAYS be a part of the story.
The "objective" media is a myth. There is no such thing. The closest you can get is to clearly state your own biases and preconceptions, and let somebody else apply the appropriate filter to what you're saying.
Back in the day, this was the norm in the media--there were Democrat newspapers and Republican newspapers, and everybody knew which was which. But today, "journalists" want to pretend that they've "evolved beyond" such crass bias.

I remember how Katie Couric interviewed Sarah Palin for 4 days... yes, 4 days solid... asking about abortion, religion, etc. and all the LSM and the dolt lemming other media took one thing to highlight... and to attack Palin about... ignoring all the other questions and answers over 4 days....

The entire 4 days of questions and answers is ignored and that one question and answer is blown up to be the big story... repeated over and over for months afterwards as an example of ??? that Palin does not read anything? that she is afraid to say what she reads... as if all she reads are Nazis pamphlets or racist newsletters or comic books. The LSM looked and looked and looked and for some reason blew that one comment into a huge negative about Palin and pushed it for months.
And we all know for a fact that Palin does and did read a lot... both print and online... so, by being peed off at Couric right at that moment, she fell into the trap.
Trump recognized that this sort of question is trap time big time... no matter what verse he said it would not matter...
"he picked a crappy verse" "I don't think that is a good verse" "why would he pick that verse? how about explaining why you like that verse" and on and on and on.
This is just like the Kelly questions... ask something that no matter what the answer, it can be construed as wrong. Screw the media.

It is very early in the race but Trump's lead is getting to the point where low energy people just don't have the gas in the tank to overcome it.
The GOPe is lost in the woods on how to stop Trump. The backup plan should Trump win the primary, Hillary, is in dire danger of collapsing so the GOPe needs a comparative candidate to win the D primary so that Hillary can be replaced and all will be well.
Either that or the ideas that Jeb is pushing "today" brings about a major shift in the R party.
