Flashback: Actual Thought-Policing, with "Deprogramming" Sessions to Break People's Aversion to Social Justice Warrior Beliefs, at the University of Delaware
Corrected: Program Was Terminated Years Ago

via @comradearthur, a must read.

Why Ya Gotta Bust My Nuts All the Time? Okay, this article, rude commenters rudely inform me, is from October 31, 2008. It's still absolutely dynamite.

I take full responsibility on behalf of @comradearthur, with whom all fault plainly lies.

...

I'll skip the opening, which details some "resistant" students -- students who gave f***-all about the U of Delaware's silly-shit mandatory Social Justice Warrior indoctrination. They said things like "Yes as an opera lover I feel oppressed by the Rock Majority."

They were taking the piss (why I am using all this English slang all of a sudden?) out of mandatory forms where UD demanded to know about each student's sexual orientation, and when he "discovered" that orientation, and when he had been the victim or victimizer in Unapproved Going About One's Life activities.

These people needed to be broken, and now the University of Delaware crosses all the fascist lines.

This is cult shit, man.

She is not playing along like the other students [she's giving "bite me" answers to the mandatory questionnaire -- ace], and the RA confronts her using his "confrontation training," but it isn't working. He becomes so appalled by her resistance that he writes up an incident report and reports her to his superiors. After all, this is the University of Delaware, and the school has a zero-tolerance policy for anything remotely resembling "hate speech."

This one-on-one session was not meant to be a punishment, some kind of mandatory sensitivity training for a recalcitrant student who had committed an infraction. It was mandatory training for all 7,000-odd students in the University of Delaware dorms. The sessions were part of a thorough thought-reform curriculum, designed by the school’s Office of Residence Life, to psychologically "treat" and correct the allegedly incorrect thoughts, attitudes, values, beliefs, and habits of the students. The ResLife staff considered students too intolerant of one another, too "consumerist," and in dire need of reeducation to become responsible world citizens who could meet the planet's environmental crisis and the requirements of social and economic "justice."

The reprogramming sessions had the trappings of cultism. After an investigation showed that males demonstrated "a higher degree of resistance to educational efforts," one dorm chose to hire "strong male RAs." Each such RA "combats male residents' concepts of traditional male identity" in order to "ensure the delivery of the curriculum at the same level as in the female floors." Mandatory group sessions singled out and shamed non-minority students because of their "privilege" in American society. Staff members kept individual files on students and their beliefs--which were to be archived after graduation. RAs were trained in the zero-tolerance policy against anything "oppressive" -- an untoward word would trigger immediate notification of the campus police. RAs were required to report their "best" and "worst" one-on-one sessions to their superiors, including students' names and room numbers. Posters and door decorations provided the ResLife messages everywhere; one could not escape them. One administrator of the program, Sendy Guerrier, wrote that students "should be confronted with this information at every turn." Students with "traditional" beliefs had to become "allies" and "change agents" by their senior year.

All of this, according to the university's own materials, was part of a new educational model that had won awards from the American College Personnel Association's Commission for Social Justice Educators. The University of Delaware was proud of this "every student" model of values education in the residence halls, which had been implemented in 2004. This "curricular approach," the university sang, was superior to the old "programming model," which was merely voluntary and only focused on outmoded activities like study breaks. Finally, Residence Life officials could be teachers of a mandatory program, just like the faculty, and they could reach students where it really mattered--where they lived. The program was a comprehensive manipulation of the living environment to inculcate, unrelentingly, the ideological messages insisted upon by the ResLife staff. It was an extreme example of what Alan Charles Kors and Harvey Silverglate had predicted ten years ago in The Shadow University: a large apparatus of Residence Life officials usurping the educational prerogatives of the faculty in order to advance a deeply repressive agenda.

Obviously, this should be made subject of a law: No university engaging in the mandatory "programming" of student political, social, or cultural beliefs can receive a dime of federal money.

That should happen -- that must happen.

America no longer exists, except in the hearts and memories of those who once loved it.

If you want that memory to be real again, it's time to start smashing the instruments of repression and control.

Update: The University of Delaware's "reprogramming" sessions were halted in 2007, thanks to pressure from Fire.

Apologies. I'll put something else up.

Damn.

10 but in all seriousness, I saw the beginnings of this even when I was in college.

The RA's and even TA's acted as kind of "thought police" and would confront people who didn't have their head on right.

One of my friends was taken aside by an RA after a "sexual harassment" seminar put on some crazy feminist chicks because he was playing on his phone and not paying attention. Naturally, he was forced to re-do the seminar and to sit in the front row and TAKE NOTES to atone for his thought crime of not paying enough attention.

11 I can see how the summer camp mentality of your average dorm would make these kids ripe for brainwashing, so, parents beware. I'd pull my kid so fast it would make their heads spin, and then file a lawsuit based on a few of the Bill of Rights, but that's just me.

31 I saw the beginning of this in high school in 1977. The students were forced to sit through an anti-death penalty rant by two absolute loons. When one loon cried out, "Who among you would pull the switch that would end another human's life," three of us (out of about 600 students) raised our hands. The "shaming" began. Only I didn't feel one speck ashamed and kept my hand raised throughout the diatribe.

My answer: talk to the pepper and tell him to spect his roomate's privacy. WRONG. The university approved answer: hold a a hall meeting about homophobia, and publicly call out the homophobic bigot for his intolerance.

52 America DOES EXIST in the minds and efforts of the vast majority of Americans. Do not send your kids to (almost) any institution of higher education; they are programming centers for marxist-fascist-islamist (all totalitarian leftist) ideas. Have your kids earn their own way and take only those courses that will give them skills and enable them to earn a living. Absolutely no "student loans". Older Americans can help them learn "Western Civ", "The Enlightenment and the Scientific Method", and "Global Cultures", etc. No one in today's so-called universities even knows what these are.

These totalitarian bozos are trying to frighten main stream Americans -- even "Meghan Kelly" is into it. Every so-called news organization. Call everyone of them on it at the very moment. This might be called a 'Breitbart" response or, now, 'Trump Them". Whatever, get hoppin' mad and do something. Do not be afraid. No more silence.

Let the failing state fail. Cease to support it.

Let the bankrupt economy implode. Preserve what wealth you can.

Let the rotting culture go systemically septic. Keep your own culture well.

84 Because colleges have something called, the American College Personnel Association's Commission for Social Justice Educators.

Yeah, I worked at a college until two years ago. A whole lot of the crap that goes on there could be mitigated through the simple expedient of not giving them so much money. It isn't just the employees, such as the above, but also the events they now can fund, and which, of course, they fund according to their own beliefs. This brings in the activists and organizers, who know how to slurp from that trough.

Everyone who uses that word in connection with totally illiberal ideas/propaganda/deeds needs to relearn their history as well as get their mouth washed out with soap. The "L" word was used by the GOPe for decades to "deprogram" as many people/Republicans as possible from their freedom and limited government ideas. They assisted the "new left" in taking over the Democratic Party by their purposeful stupidity. No one could think about who was promoting "big government." It was not the real Liberals or the real Conservatives. It was the leftists, the GOPe, and the CofC. You let yourself get conned every time you use the word Liberal to mean marxist/socialist, etc. Freedom, equality of opportunity, limited government -- these are and always have been "liberal" -- as well as a "conservative" application of "liberal" ideas. Dorm freshman year, major CA university, chancellor lived across the street. He was a botanist. One day he quietly came to our RA (very cool guy) and asked that "the boys" not flaunt their pot plants quite so much (they would put some in the west-facing windows to get sun in the afternoons).

That was it. Doubt the chancellor even though of contacting campus cops.

RA did an excellent job. Hall was actually good guys, just a very high proportion of serious recreational users. Two bright quirky guys from wealthy families used their Regents scholarship (cash grant) ...... to buy Lebanese hash. Right next door lived two super nice ultra-studious Japanese-American engineering students you barely ever saw. Real diversity.

Trying to imagine the reaction of any of us, from the two black guys from Compton (classic, funny guys), to the straight-laced guys from the Central Valley/small towns, to being told what to think. Of course, the RA would never go along. And we wouldn't have put up with it for 5 minutes.

This is 100% normal now.

When you hear leftists say "ALL THESE IGNORANT HATERS NEED TO GET EDUCATED" THIS is what they're referring to.

You laugh about all of those "gender studies" majors. Yes, most work at Starbucks after college. But the ones who do find jobs "in their fields" -- well, where do you think they're "working" (and evangelizing?)

In academia.

One, two, three
Its easy to see
But its not that I don't care so
'Cause I hear it all the time
But they never let you know
On the TV and the radio
She was young her heart was pure
But every night is bright she got
She said sugar is sweet
She come rappin' to the beat
Then I knew that she was hot

She was singin'
Don't turn around, uh-oh
Der Kommissar's in town, uh-oh
You're in his eye
And you'll know why
The more you live
The faster you will die

Alles klar, Herr Kommissar

[Instrumental Interlude]

She said, babe, you know
I miss Jill and Joe
And all my funky friends
But my street understanding
Was just enough to know what she really meant
And I got to thinking while she was talking
That I know she told the story
Of those special places that she goes
When she rides with the others in the subway singin'

Don't turn around, uh-oh
Der Kommissar's in town, uh-oh
And if he talks to you
And you don't know why
You say your life
Is gonna make you die

Alles klar, Herr Kommissar

Well, we meet Jill and Joe
And brother Herr
And the whole cool gang and, oh
They're rappin' here they're rappin' there
But she's climbin' on the wall
It's a clear case, Herr Kommissar
'Cause all the children know
They're all slidin' down into the valley
They're all slipping on the same snow

Hear the children
Don't turn around, uh-oh
Der Kommissar's in town, uh-oh
He's got the power
And you're so weak
And you're frustration
Will not let you speak
La, la, la, la, la, la

Don't turn around, uh-oh
Der Kommissar's in town, uh-oh
And if he talks to you
Then you'll know why
The more you live
The faster you will die

Don't turn around, uh-oh

Two were Vietnam vets (Army and Air Force) and one was a Vietnam era vet (Air Force, mostly stationed in England where one of his buddies swallowed his .45 while on guard duty). Whenever they'd see one of the sergeants attached to the Corps (our dorm was right next door to the Corps' dorm), they'd lean out the window and yell, 'Fucking LIFER!' Our floor got called down to the student dean of housing. Well, those three 'boys' didn't take shit from her. They asked what the problem was as their statement was true. What was the poor woman dean going to do with three male Vietnam era vets sitting in front of her? They saw worse shit than she could ever dish out. She could only meekly ask them to 'tone it down'. They just laughed in her face. I simply can't imagine the reeducation those guys would go through today, if they were still allowed on campus.

The reporter and cameraman were just doing their jobs, occupying that tiny little open window of consciousness in the vast span of space and time, and a fucking psycho terminates them without warning.

You know what? Every one of us has someone in our lives, whether we even know it or not, who is our enemy, deserved or not, who might at any time decide to kill us. It is a certainty. The world is too full of lunatics for this not to be true.

I keep thinking: "Be Polite, Be Professional, and Have a Plan to Kill Everyone You Meet."

At freshman orientation at the University of Texas, we had mandatory
"diversity" training, where political questions were asked, and we had
to move to opposite sides of the room based on answers. Then people were
forced to defend their beliefs. It was ridiculous.

Then we went to an auditorium to watch a play, which featured a
staged "coming out" from an audience member (there were multiple
orientation sessions so we'd heard about this.

The whole thing was nauseating, and this was over ten years ago. I can only imagine how bad it's gotten now.

Right the first time, brak. It's no wonder Obummer got voted in twice, indeed. This university-sanctioned bullying and indoctrination has led to a loss of real First Amendment freedoms, while the bullied and indoctrinated kids spout slogans better associated with the Cultural Revolution and Crystalnacht while claiming to be "free" and "without prejudice".

199 51 I got rejected from a "Resident Advisor" position in the 90s because I gave one wrong answer. The hypo was:

A student comes to you to complain that he thinks his roommate is staring at him when he gets out of the shower and changes. The ogling roommate is suspected to be gay. As the RA, how do you handle the situation?

My answer: talk to the pepper and tell him to spect his roomate's privacy. WRONG. The university approved answer: hold a a hall meeting about homophobia, and publicly call out the homophobic bigot for his intolerance.

256 He says he has been attacked by black men and white females. --He talks about how he was attacked for being a gay, black man

So......according to the dear leader, this guy is a racist for accusing black men of something?

What in Hell am I supposed to do with this!?!

261 Yeah, only got one (metaphorical) fire extinguisher, so the options are kinda limited.

263 Now it's going on in high school, just in case the colleges have been constrained not to train the activists.

264 It isn't that the program has been stopped or modified; it's that the program was started in the first place. That the university saw fit to allow this programming as an "acceptable practice" shows how far the standards have fallen.

265 "Deprogramming" is still being demanded of Jack Phillips, the Colorado baker who refused to bake a cake for a gay wedding and was sued over it. L'etat demands that he get with the "gays are awesome and Christianity sucks" program, but, God bless him, he's still resisting.

266 The son of a friend of mine attended University of Delaware during that time. His mother was horrified by some of the tales.

For example, during orientation he was grouped with some white freshmen students in a room with some Jewish freshmen students. The white students were instructed to identify insulting adjectives they had heard applied to Jews. My friend's son said nothing but was prodded by the UD "trainer" that SURELY he had heard something derogative about Jews in his lifetime, what was it, say something so we can examine society's prejudices. The 18-yr old said with a questioning voice "cheap", as in is that good enough to pass your test and let me get out of here. The Jewish students glared daggers at him. So presumably he made enemies that day thanks to the UD reconcilement counselors.

The Jewish students were also prodded about prejudices they had heard about non-Jewish people and they objected, and were permitted to not contribute an insult!

Extremely dangerous to give this kind of power to ANYONE.
