The frat certainly didn't deserve any punishment, at all (and those in the school administration who took part in this all deserve to be fired and given rides in Brazen Bulls) but I think that it is a bit of an optimistic note that there are still some different standards for men and women - as there well should be.

When I was in college, all male school, there were three all girl schools within walking distance.
Many times after pep rallies at the Confederate monument on the Capital grounds, 500 or 600 men would raid one of the schools. Seriously.
Girls would throw their panties out the window with their phone # in them. Actually the number of the hall phone, so you sort of had to figure out who to ask for.
The local police just watched. Fun times.

And I don't think many of the commenters realize how fucked up it is for the school to "suspend" the fraternity -- that either means they cannot have parties (but still must pay dues), or in more dramatic cases that the fraternity needs to surrender it's charter and can't be a "house". Then depending on who owns the physical structure, those kids may need to find other housing.
Either way, it significantly disrupts peoples social life for 1/4 of the time they're at school. And it sucks.
If there are individual students you want to discipline, that's one thing. But to tell 50 kids (or whatever) "sorry your senior/junior/sophomore/freshman year is going to suck" is pretty shitty

Nobody batted an eyelash that they were displayed the insignia of our national enemies in WWII.
If they had displayed the other Axis flag - -you know the one, with a swastiska in the center - -they would have been banned from campus.
I'd a good bet that some of those dudes had grandfathers who were killed in action by those very same Imperial Japanese.

When I was a Freshman, my school had Bearicades-for the Baylor/AandM game. historically, the Baylor men had to protect the Baylor women from marauding Aggies, but it was basically a night for geeky guys to grab girls on campus and kiss them. The division that handles online crimes against children executed the warrant Thursday, according to Lt. John Jenal of the Los Angeles Police Department.
