American, European Stocks Rebound After China Cuts Interest Rates Again

The Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite finished the day down, but apparently the rest of the world likes the Chinese plan to cut interest rates to spur their country's lackluster 7% growth. (! -- well, they're used to even higher rates, and some people think that number is inflated.)

Chinee stocks, however, kept falling.

Global markets rallied higher after the Chinese central bank announced plans to cut its one-year lending rate to 4.6 percent, a move the People's Bank of China said would provide long-term liquidity and help support the economy. The move came after China’s benchmark Shanghai composite index slid further Tuesday, losing 7.6 percent to close below the psychological 3,000 mark.

...

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded near 31 Tuesday after as much as 90 percent on Monday, its highest level since 2009. The New York Stock Exchange invoked Rule 48 for the second day in a row Tuesday to pre-empt panic selling, Dow Jones reported.

So I'm sure everything's okay now.

17 Now that the stock market is fantastic again, I guess the government can start figuring out how to pay those $90 Trillion to $200 Trillion in promises (Unfunded Liabilities) that various politicians kept promising to get elected.

Promises that will never be kept...like a promise of a guy to call a one night pump and dump....or Barky's promise to not do anything in our mouths. Except many people designed their lives around those promises.

No one ever talks about that.

82 Good thing America never did anything crazy with currency, like all the QE and ZIRP for years. oh ... well, it's OK because we are the police for the world?

We made the banks strong and screwed grandma, and there is a ton of distortion in markets because of easy money. It might be traced back to voodoo economics. Reagan said he was sorry about leaving debt iirc, and Greenspan kept enabling excesses. Of course we could go back 100 years to "commie" influence and the federal reserve being thrust upon us with Obama style brinkmanship. It was passed Dec 23rd 1913 with many members home already.

KT McFarland on Red Eye said China fears rebellion by their own, and blacks out news of their problems. She thinks we should help get the info in, a sort of support for their version of Iran's green rebellion (which Obama ignored).

There are many moving parts, but Trump is right in that we need to be tougher on trade deals. His big talk goes over the top on China and immigration, but it makes for a dialogue at least.

I think they stopped executing people in china for embezzlement and some fraud. A lot of owners of companies did get whacked but they did things like dilute antibiotics and baby formula which caused severe injury and death. So, they desevered it. Not sure what they think was going to happen when people died and it was traced back to their knowingly contaminating their products.

NCAA, NFL and other major sports leagues Tuesday, denying New Jerseys
latest bid to bring legalized sports betting to the states struggling

The Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia denied New
Jerseys appeal by a 2-1 majority decision, ruling that the state's
efforts violate the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of

I would either need two files (one for print, one for ebook) or I would need one file that could be used with equal facility for both.

Anyone in the Horde got the skill set, time, and inclination? Shoot me an email at dedicatedtenther at the gmail thingy with rates, etc.

And, yes, I will likely be spamming this periodically for the next couple days.

- I did get one inquiry from an otherwise anonymous member of the Horde on behalf of his/her daughter, but I would be silly, at this stage, to limit myself to one person if more than one is interested in the work.

Read somewhere speculation that there was a lot of selling recently because new investors suddenly needed money. I don't know if it is true but certainly the PRC has been buying huge amounts of gold the last few years in preparation of backstopping their currency should they move as the new reserve. It also makes sense that what do you do with US treasury paper? Get dollars for it? Maybe short term but then you buy something with those dollars that has real staying power like properties or commodities or Africa or something.

135 The scary part of China's situation, as has been alluded to by others here, is that they have a surplus of men and need a distraction from this. What's a great solution to both of those problems? A massive war.

However, China also historically has a gigantic amount of inertia and tends to be very static. They just have not very often used their enormous wealth and manpower to take action militarily as often as you'd expect. Its a cultural thing, a nation heavily informed by confucianism and lending its self toward fatalism, staying where you are, and not acting.

197 Good thing America never did anything crazy with currency, like all the QE and ZIRP for years. oh ... well, it's OK because we are the police for the world?

We made the banks strong and screwed grandma, and there is a ton of distortion in markets because of easy money. It might be traced back to voodoo economics. Reagan said he was sorry about leaving debt iirc, and Greenspan kept enabling excesses. Of course we could go back 100 years to "commie" influence and the federal reserve being thrust upon us with Obama style brinkmanship. It was passed Dec 23rd 1913 with many members home already.

KT McFarland on Red Eye said China fears rebellion by their own, and blacks out news of their problems.

Posted by: Illiniwek at August 25, 2015 11:56 AM (6zZ5y)

What the Fed did - and its unintended consequences - is really a lot responsible for what is going on in the developing countries. The Fed set interest rates at essentially at zero, the dev. countries borrowed massively to support development and now the strong dollars is like a high interest rate for them to get $ to repay the loans, which they are struggling to do.

So while the actions the Fed took to make Barry look good, came back to bite them in the ass and will eventually make Barry look as bad, or worse then he really is.

F--king karma is a bitch.

If this is only a correction for China commodities will probably maintain the higher levels.

If this is the warm up for the first modern China depression commodities are probably headed for a lower plateau.

232 I have mixed feelings about gold.

I think the reasons for wanting gold are sound, there is a currency war globally combined with the fact that no country is really doing any sort of austerity to get their budget house in order. There really is no exit plan if the economy doesn't start roaring again and I'm just seeing zero evidence that any of it is working.

But the commodity itself doesn't just derive value from bad public policy. And if the shit hits the fan, I could easily see gold going down the shitter with other commodities like oil.

I do know this, if I lived in China I doubt I would invest in anything but physical gold, warts and all because you simply can't trust anything else.

239 Hollywood is already heavily using Chinese money and changing their movies for the domestic Chinese audience.

Example?

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation-

In the credits along with the big American/British stars is a Chinese name - Chung King or something I forget-

any who in the scene where they're in the Train station(?) trying to recapture the double agent girl,

there's about a 10-15 second scene following a Chinese woman around whom we've never seen and never see again.

I assume she's some big Chinese star and there are other scenes in the Chinese version of MI:RN, where she actually plays some important part.

I'm sure in no way will this partnership result in the spreading of Chinese communist/fascist propaganda through American movies.
