Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | "My first reaction was to sit down and hide. Then I heard an American say 'go get him'."That was once typical of Americans, and, who knows, maybe will be one day once more. Jazz Shaw digests the more vetted version of the story -- none of the US personnel on the train were Marines. The three who first acted were an Air Force man, a National Guardsman, and a civilian.'At this point we seem to have settled on the fact that the Americans involved in taking down and hog tying the presumed terrorist were Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler. Sadler is a civilian, Stone is in the Air Force and Skarlatos is either a National Guard member or an inactive National Guard reservist, depending who you ask.But a civilian American, maybe traveling with the servicemen, so maybe not entirely ordinary. In addition, a 62 British businessman jumped on the dogpile -- he is the one who said he was stirred to action by hearing an American voice say "Go get him." One Frenchman jumped on too, a train conductor who was off-duty and just on the train as a passenger. He held down the guy's left arm. The Brit, businessman Chris Norman, said: "My thought was I'm probably going to die anyway so let's go. I'd rather die active trying to get him down than simply sit in the corner and be shot."Bravo. He says the most important hero here was Spencer Stone, the Air Force man, who was actually a medic. Stone got badly slashed by the terrorists' knife or boxcutter, and his thumb was nearly cut off entirely. (Hopefully that has been reattached and will heal with no complications.) Despite bleeding profusely, and despite being down a thumb, Stone administered emergency aid to a passenger badly slashed through the throat immediately after subduing and hogtying the terrorist. Hopefully that passenger will live, and Stone will have another contact/informant in his Shadow-like war on crime. Here are your Big Damn Heroes, America: via ABC News, Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos, and Anthony Sadler From the Telegraph. Assuming these are the same three men (can't tell with the one white guy, actually; you people all look alike to me), they were traveling together, I guess. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Thanks for a coherent update Ace. I read three links from Drudge this morning and was rewarded with being completely confused on who was who, who did what, how many were injured and by which weapon, etc. None of the three articles attempted to clarify and correct the early reports.... and so that was part of my confusion too. So for me, no Air Force jokes for the rest of the year in recognition of Spencer and his actions.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned here that I was gonna start carrying. It's uncomfortable for me to carry. I feel every ounce of that 2 pound piece of steel and it digs into my skin and pokes me every time I move. So I forgot about carrying. Then yesterday there was a report on the news about some idiot with a gun walking around Fitchburg State University, where I happen to be working near. He was caught before anyone got caught. And then this. So I will again reconsider carrying daily. Posted by: Soothsayer rose above the noise and confusion just to get a glimpse beyond the illusion at August 22, 2015 02:28 PM (MsmYG) 18

Despite my pessimism, even knowing there are men like these in the world makes me happy, and gives me some small amount of hope for the future.
- I think we all consist of a mixture of good and evil or villain and hero. Which comes out depends upon at least two things, free will/personal choice and sociological rewards and punishments. When Hitler was in charge, evil was rewarded and mercy punished and the result was Auschwitz. Acting out of personal interest, individuals chose evil. Formerly here in the US, virtue was rewarded and evil punished but that was before Obama transformed America. Posted by: The Great White Snark at August 22, 2015 02:30 PM (r+lhE) 25

"We must also engage, however, in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent, is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to a particular culture, religion, or ethnicity. It may find expression in a particular brand of violence, and may be channeled by particular demagogues or fanatics. Most often, though, it grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair."

Yeah, our media has been attempting to redefine "brave" and "courageous" as letting your freak flag fly in public, or some form of progressive activism (no tampon during marathon!!), for years. Those terms are thrown around A LOT. It takes something like this to remind the public what true bravery is.

I like the details on how the buddy tells Spencer, let's get that guy! And Spencer charges. It's the mindset of together we can do this... it wasn't Spencer with a deathwish or hero complex. Then the three friends act in concert and so in taking action, help the Brit to overcome his initial reaction to the incident and involve himself. It takes that split second for someone to say let's do this and cut through the fog of is it a threat or no and can I do something or not and throw away the risk/reward calc's that can freeze folks in times of violence.
Trained folks at taught how to cut through quickly. Some with experiences in life know how to cut through it. And some have that ability innately. I hope Spencer and his buddies get just enough recognition and support, but not so much that it causes them problems. I only say that because if they get lifted too high, the desire of the Slate's of the world will desire to tear them down to prevent worshiping their courage and their fortitude. well i have been keeping up... they're reporting it pretty much as it was, with all credit to the American heroes (and the brit). They are not making a big deal about the actor. they just mention him. I saw a guy on Social Media noting that the french president was thanking POTUS Obama for the bravery of Americans. I went out and bought a quick-release key ring today. I didn't know that such things existed.
This means that when I pull into the driveway, I don't have to shut off the car, take the keys out and unlock the garage door, then re-start the car and pull into the garage. I can leave the car running while I unlock the garage. Progress! Also, when I take my car in for maintenance, I can easily give the service guy the car key without taking it off the ring. I tore the hell out of my thumbnail putting my keys on the new key ring, but sometimes one must sacrifice for the common good. "But Europe is not as bad as its leadership (sound familiar?), and many
many people still consider America the adult on the planet when things are serious." One also wonders if the Euros noticed how "the adult on the planet" has been behaving for the last six and a half years with regard to security policy in their back yard. Wherein the current Democratic president abruptly and rudely reneged on a pledge by the previous Republican president to the Poles and the Czechs to provide them with antiballistic missile defenses. But more than that, and even more shocking, how the current Democratic president has completely ignored a security guarantee of territorial sovereignty issued to Ukraine by a previous Democratic president. That goes beyond routine American political-party rivalry into the realm of governance by adolescent tantrum. Posted by: torquewrench at August 22, 2015 03:25 PM (noWW6) 177

From a great book: "The truly amazing thing about me is that, as a product of this amazing country, I am utterly ordinary. However, once I leave the borders of these United States, I start to grow in power and influence until I become someone who can do anything; feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, protect the weak and clothe the shabby".
The military doesn't make these men, Ace. They make the military. The military sharpens and focuses the behaviors, but it doesn't create them. But, at the risk of sounding pessimistic, to the military leadership (at least of the Air Force) your skin color and how you pee is much more important than the behaviors these young men exhibited. Good on them. Posted by: MikeB at August 22, 2015 03:35 PM (/d9dJ) 196

@206...I rode a crowded commuter train from Brussels to Bruges Belgium two years ago. I had one small carry-on bag and a travel purse. You would think I had ten cases and body odor the way I was treated. Never have strangers not looked at me...when I simply tried to smile and express how beautiful the land was. Begrudgingly one young man scooted over on a two seat and "allowed" me to sit with his group. None spoke. None smiled. All yapped in Finnish, indicating the family of "ugly Americans" and their whopping four small cases in overhead, and! spending money in their land. pfft I was pissed.
I wonder how those "gents" feel today about American tourists. I have ridden many trains in the UK, France, Austria, and Belgium, and never have been treated like this. I wanted to yell "bite moi" but I was with family. xoxo Posted by: ChristyBlinky, aging supermodel Redneck Queen at August 22, 2015 03:53 PM (akaHw) 216
It still is typical of Americans. It's still typical of the little people Americans, the ones who don't go to fancy cocktail parties or trendy bistros -- and even some of them might surprise, if they could ever be roused out of their attractive and pleasant extinctions, but they would have to be seriously roused first, and that is unlikely....and there would be more if people would stop being so defeatist and negative (you will never have heroes if you never give even the least of people a chance, an idea that they can indeed be one).
Fortunately most never have to be in a position where it's tested, but there are more out there than many give credit for. Posted by: unknown j. at August 22, 2015 04:01 PM (B6sgj) 217

With this shitstain slashing and shooting at everyone, they could easily have killed him in self defense. No need to risk injury trying to "subdue" him. No one's more subdued than a corpse.
Now he'll be released un a few years, free to fight again and radicalize others. I appreciate how compassionate they were, but given how the system works, this may end up with more innocent people harmed in the future. They should have killed him. SCOAMF has spoken. The following is from Powerline:
"President Obama issued a statement that was both ungrammatical and oddly restrained: 'While the investigation into the attack is in its early stages, it is clear that their heroic actions may have prevented a far worse tragedy.' "'Clear' doesn't comport with 'may.' What is clear is that the courageous servicemen most certainly did prevent a far worse tragedy. But, whatever. It has nothing to do with him." "'Clear' doesn't comport with 'may.' ------ No it doesn't, but it reminds me of the following: there was a report that a psychic was helping police in inveatigations with her "powers". One wag quipped, "I'll bet she's 100% right... 5% of the time" Difference is, Obama said it out of mealy mouthed ineptitude, not wit. Posted by: Caitlyn Jenner at August 22, 2015 04:33 PM (DGrkU) 232

that was claimed by I think "Critical condition" doesn't mean what lay people think it does. he was badly cut on the back and back of the neck, and had his thumb nearly severed. I don't think his life was ctually in danger tho. I think medical professionals say "critical condition" when they mean something is at a critical step, not to mean "in danger of dying," as we usually take it , as lay people.
