That was once typical of Americans, and, who knows, maybe will be one day once more.

Jazz Shaw digests the more vetted version of the story -- none of the US personnel on the train were Marines. The three who first acted were an Air Force man, a National Guardsman, and a civilian.'

At this point we seem to have settled on the fact that the Americans involved in taking down and hog tying the presumed terrorist were Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler. Sadler is a civilian, Stone is in the Air Force and Skarlatos is either a National Guard member or an inactive National Guard reservist, depending who you ask.

But a civilian American, maybe traveling with the servicemen, so maybe not entirely ordinary.

In addition, a 62 British businessman jumped on the dogpile -- he is the one who said he was stirred to action by hearing an American voice say "Go get him."

One Frenchman jumped on too, a train conductor who was off-duty and just on the train as a passenger. He held down the guy's left arm.

The Brit, businessman Chris Norman, said:

"My thought was I'm probably going to die anyway so let's go. I'd rather die active trying to get him down than simply sit in the corner and be shot."

Bravo.

He says the most important hero here was Spencer Stone, the Air Force man, who was actually a medic. Stone got badly slashed by the terrorists' knife or boxcutter, and his thumb was nearly cut off entirely. (Hopefully that has been reattached and will heal with no complications.)

Despite bleeding profusely, and despite being down a thumb, Stone administered emergency aid to a passenger badly slashed through the throat immediately after subduing and hogtying the terrorist. Hopefully that passenger will live, and Stone will have another contact/informant in his Shadow-like war on crime.

From KCRA, Sadler, Skarlatos, and the British businessman who jumped into the fray, Chris Norman... Comrade Arthur says those are medals issued by a local town; the major national French medals will come later. And I assume Stone is missing from the picture because he's still in the hospital.

I read three links from Drudge this morning and was rewarded with being completely confused on who was who, who did what, how many were injured and by which weapon, etc. None of the three articles attempted to clarify and correct the early reports.... and so that was part of my confusion too. So for me, no Air Force jokes for the rest of the year in recognition of Spencer and his actions.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned here that I was gonna start carrying.

It's uncomfortable for me to carry. I feel every ounce of that 2 pound piece of steel and it digs into my skin and pokes me every time I move.

So I forgot about carrying. Then yesterday there was a report on the news about some idiot with a gun walking around Fitchburg State University, where I happen to be working near. He was caught before anyone got caught.

Part of the credit has to be laid at the feet of our military and its training. To react that way in that environment is astounding. Even so, these are three very impressive men.

Yes, all humans are subject to the dichotomy of good and evil. Military service personnel are trained to fight for justice and right. Most of the time (but not always) that training allows them to do the right thing when their time of testing comes.

Mentioned it yesterday, in a different context than this train incident I have seen/heard quite a bit of quiet but sometimes explicit sentiment from Euros that you need Americans to "get it done" in difficult situations. Always very discreet. But Europe is not as bad as its leadership (sound familiar?), and many many people still consider America the adult on the planet when things are serious.

Yeah, our media has been attempting to redefine "brave" and "courageous" as letting your freak flag fly in public, or some form of progressive activism (no tampon during marathon!!), for years. well i have been keeping up... they're reporting it pretty much as it was, with all credit to the American heroes (and the brit).

They are not making a big deal about the actor. they just mention him.

I saw a guy on Social Media noting that the french president was thanking POTUS Obama for the bravery of Americans. He asked, "Why not thank me as well?" I imagine what he meant is: "What the hell does Obama have to do with this?!" (I follow right-leaning accounts.)

I tried to get him to clarify that, but he did not respond.

This means that when I pull into the driveway, I don't have to shut off the car, take the keys out and unlock the garage door, then re-start the car and pull into the garage. I can leave the car running while I unlock the garage. Progress!

Also, when I take my car in for maintenance, I can easily give the service guy the car key without taking it off the ring.

I tore the hell out of my thumbnail putting my keys on the new key ring, but sometimes one must sacrifice for the common good.

You would think I had ten cases and body odor the way I was treated. Never have strangers not looked at me...when I simply tried to smile and express how beautiful the land was. Begrudgingly one young man scooted over on a two seat and "allowed" me to sit with his group. None spoke. None smiled. All yapped in Finnish, indicating the family of "ugly Americans" and their whopping four small cases in overhead, and! spending money in their land. pfft I was pissed.

I wonder how those "gents" feel today about American tourists.

I have ridden many trains in the UK, France, Austria, and Belgium, and never have been treated like this. I wanted to yell "bite moi" but I was with family. xoxo

that was claimed by I think "Critical condition" doesn't mean what lay people think it does.

he was badly cut on the back and back of the neck, and had his thumb nearly severed.

I don't think his life was ctually in danger tho. I think medical professionals say "critical condition" when they mean something is at a critical step, not to mean "in danger of dying," as we usually take it , as lay people.
