62 I've said before that in a few years we are going to find that, without much fanfare, progressives have largely stopped talking about tolerance and priding themselves on their tolerance. Because you can only engage in so many political-motivated persecutions and still think of yourselves as tolerant, eventually the hypocrisy will just be too much. Instead it will become "we are right *because the science says so*" (whether it actually does or not), "you are wrong, and we're going to do what the science says".

187 Hi all,

I survived having to talk at the funeral today, actually got to make them laugh, which was my goal.

Sarah was a great lady, she was one who hired me 26 yrs ago for what is my dream job (some days). I owed it to her to give a tribute, glad I could do it and help her kids out at the funeral.

I don't get cats period. Tried them twice. first hid in the back of my closet and attacked me everytime I went to get a shirt. Second shit in all my house plants. Did 2 rounds of antibiotics once when one stray attacked my leg. Have a pt who has a cat, everytime I go there it purrs and cuddles on my lap then attacks. Had to pull it off my head the other day when it jumped up and embedded it's claws and teeth in my hair. I realize there are a lot of cat lovers here but I hate the damn things.
Posted by: Molly k at August 22, 2015 10:40 PM (zS+qK)

I never had a cat growing up, because my father hated them. But at age 42, when I was living in an apartment, I fell head over heels in love with my neighbor's cat Chloe, and it was definitely mutual. She and I totally bonded. I have never felt so close to any animal, including the dogs I had when I was a kid.

I could go on for hours about Chloe, but to make a long story short, she had her kittens in my bedroom closet and I adopted two of them. Leo died in 2007, but I still have Kira, who's 15 now.

189 I was busy all day at the Air and Space museum here in Oregon gawking at the Spruce Goose and SR 71 and all the zillions of other exhibits. Didn't get any work done on the cover.

I'm going to have to study how to use a deforming tool to get the flag right. I could draw it out easy but that wouldn't work with the rest of the cover. I think I am getting close.

Seriously if you ever have a chance all of you, the Evergreen Aircraft and Space Museum in McMinville Oregon is amazing. More than you can see in one day. All the planes you've ever wanted to see up close. The SR-71 there is fully operational and one of the few you can get that close to. They have the real Spruce Goose and its bigger than you think. No, really, bigger than that.

191 Anyone else see the article by Ben Shapiro over at Breitbart? It talks about a poll done in the UK asking about the respondants sexuality. The respondants were to rank themselves on a scale of 0 (fully heterosexual) to 6 (fully homosexual). The poll collected data on age groups starting at age 18 and going up. 88% of those 60 or older identified at fully heterosexual and as you went down the age groups, people self identifying as fully heterosexual decreased. The 18-24 age group only had 5% identify as fully heterosexual.
Shapiro believes and I tend to agree with him, this poll gives evidence that homosexuality is not just purely biological, but is a choice.

I believe the immigration issue is the hill to die on, I believe Trump thinks that as well.

This issue has massive cross over potential with blacks, Reagan Democrats and Tech Nerds.

Slashdot which is 99pct progressive to suicidally progressive shows strong support for Trumps H1B reforms.

If Trump can sharpen and focus his message and bring on some heavy hitters like Mike Rowe, John Bolton, Thomas Sowell et al, I truly believe we are looking at a Reagan type landslide.

I even like the fact that Trump holds Reagan at arms distance while he sort of co-opts the morning in America message of American strength and renewal after the disasterous Bush and Obama administrations.

Even the left doesn't actually believe that homosexuality is entirely biological. RSM has done a hell of a job rounding up quotes from radical feminists encouraging women to become lesbians, and Zombie has provide plenty of material from gay leaders indicating that they believe that people can be converted.

The "born this way" movement was always about trying to give gay rights the same moral status as the civil rights movement, and to undercut the arguments that we shouldn't base policy off of someone's chosen behaviors. Now that they've got gay marriage expect to see "born this way" quietly dropped in favor of, "It's a valid lifestyle choice" once again.

My favorite Lawyer quote comes from the Patrick O'Brian book Reverse of the Medal:

"I do not say that all lawyers are bad, but I do maintain that the general tendency is bad: standing up in a court for whichever side has paid you, affecting warmth and conviction, and doing everything you can to win the case, whatever your private opinion may be, will soon dull any fine sense of honour. I love Newfoundlands, too! But my neighbor growing up had a German Shepherd and that was the best dog I ever knew. Wicked smaht, gentle, and such a good judge of character. I grew up in a rough neighborhood and this dog protected the whole block. He knew what was up. So I vowed when I got my dog- that I chose- (we had a basset hound that we adopted rather than see her go to the pound - very sweet dog, but I know I would never want another slow-mo basset)- I wanted a German Shepherd. Are they barky? I don't remember Jorge, the shepherd I grew up with, *ever* barking. He was very expressive, but not in a loud way.

I will be present at the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board on September 12 at 8:30am to represent your interests. 321 You know, I remember some studies of this homo-hetero question and the question of whether "bisexuality" was real. They hooked test subjects up to contraptions that actually measured physical arousal and tested what really turned them on, not what they would claim or admit to (I know the thought of that scares us morons to death).

Results were (complex and subject to a lot of complication and interpretation) that basically men are either straight or gay. Women either turned them on, or men did.

Many women on the other hand, turned out to be attracted to both, in fact a large majority. Now, again, morons don't get all excited, thinking every chick is secretly into three-ways and putting on some girl/girl show.

It doesn't necessarily mean that, maybe just either sex in a sexual portrayal turns them on. (And oh, women's general arousal is less than men to this kind of stuff, and that may have something to do with it as well). However, there is a case to be made that women are indeed more likely to be really bisexual. There are even evolutionary psychology theories to explain it. And refutations of them as well.

Anyway, men are likely either or, while women are an open question.

Oh another result likely to make leftists mad: Both sexes "objectify" and sexualize the female body. This is a human trait, not some patriarchal oppression.

When I saw that the labor participation rate had fallen to a low not seen since the 70s I took a long hard look at those numbers. You have to consider cultural changes that take place over decades. It was WW2 that brought women into the workforce and raised the labor participation rate over 50% for the first time. What caused it to peak around the turn of the century and come back down is probably not a single point failure. I blame social programs mostly.

You can do that from published numbers. Take the number of full time employed equivalent for the most recent quarter, divide it by the population between 18 - 65 per the last census, and the resulting decimal is your percentage employed.

333 The problem with relying on workforce participation in unemployment numbers is that there is a larger percentage of baby boomers retiring.

I realize I'm going to get whacked for saying this, but the economy has improved--no where near the rate it has in past recoveries; it's been very slow, very anemic--but it has improved. If it hadn't, Romney would be President.

Now, we'll see what happens with China and this latest whacking of the stock market and, yeah, workforce participation is still *a* issue--but you can't get a picture of the economy just by looking at it.

But that is a meaningless number in itself since "full time employed" is an arbitrary definition. It means 40 hours a week. So what about the person who works 25 hours a week. 337 332: It gets complicated, with sex-linked traits. Suppose you had a trait that made men gay, but women slightly more fertile/likely to mate. As long as that increased the *total* reproductive success rate, it would propagate.

The gay thing is likely due or mostly due to hormonal influences on the brain in the womb (and this might be a basis for the trans crap as well).

One thing they found is the chances of a male baby becomming gay increases with the male birth order. That is, the more male babies a mother bore before the birth of a given male, the more likely that baby to be gay. The female body doesn't like that "bath" of male hormones brewing in her womb someway somehow and sorts of builds something that might roughly be called "immunity" to it. That "immunity" can reduce the hormone levels during crucial stages of the male fetal development.

But none of this is conclusive, of course. Just evidence for it that could be refuted.

355 But that is a meaningless number in itself since
"full time employed" is an arbitrary definition. It means 40 hours a
week. So what about the person who works 25 hours a week. He's not fully
employed. But is he working 25 by choice or because he can only get 25
hours? Or what about the 58 year old who is retired and on a nice fat
pension (usually a govt pension).

Posted by: HUCK / AKIN 2016 at August 23, 2015 12:18 AM (0LHZx)

I am talking rough numbers using available online sources, that can be calculated from earlier periods too so can be sort of gut-checked for past periods.

The full time equivalent is generally meaning how many numbers worked in a week / 40. So three clowns working 20 hours a week is FTE 1.5
Want has nothing to do about that. Whether you want to work 20 hours a week or the employer doesn't want to break the ACA limit and won't let you work full time. I am just talking numbers.

362 As an aside to labor-force/employment-rate numbers, take a look at the number of personal income tax returns filed.

It is difficult to distill the numbers, because the IRS does not make available, in an obvious fashion, the necessary data.

Nonetheless, looking at the gross data, my first estimate, for paying returns, is something in the neighborhood of 35 million returns.

There are all sorts of considerations to be made. In some cases they are joint returns, in some cases they are filed only for credits, etc., etc.

The implication is that roughly 10% of the population is paying the freight for 330 million people. We can make all sorts of allowances for 'too old', or 'too young' to be paying, but the 10% number still holds true.

Nah, I agree.

There were technological improvements 2007-2015. Some in tech, which don't suffer from the heavy hand of government as much. Mostly in energy: shale "fracking" being most in the news.

The Democrats were mixed on tech: mostly they stayed out of the way, which is always good for business. (The SJWs hate this; that's why they've been hitting hard at the "Women In Tech" meme lately, not to mention the racial demographics.) The Democrats have been less good on energy, but they've mainly just been blindsided there.

The question I have, as a tech employee, has to be - how are the parties going to serve my interests, and the tech industries' interests? It seems to me that the Democrats serve the SJWs who will replace me with Democrat voters. The Republicans serve the Chamber of Commerce who will replace me with non voters on H1B.

Don't forget, we are still using the "summer blend" of gas that is the most expensive because of the additives in it. Gas and diesel will start to plummet in mid September.

Oil will hit $30 a barrel, and probably go lower than that because China is in the shitter.

Cheap oil means that world demand isn't meeting production. OPEC's out is 31.5M barrels a day (above their 30M barrel agreement), and demand for it is 29.2M barrels a day. If they can't sell the oil they are producing for a higher price, some of those countries will try to make it up in volume further depressing the price.

Let's face it, those countries need every penny they can get to pay off all the "Princes" and other Oil Ticks that keep them in power. If the choice is OPEC compliance or keeping their necks intact, they will keep their necks intact.

439 399 >> Oil will hit $30 a barrel, and probably go lower than that because China is in the shitter.

I saw someone say $32 so close enough. Such a shame, really. Venezuela is shitting their socialist bed, Cuba got lots of oil from them and would probably now be shitting the bed, and Iran would be shitting the bed too if not for the wondrous workings of TFG.

Instead, Cuba is getting a great big ole dose of help from US tourist $, and Iran gets $150 billion or so of their frozen assets. Just when they are ready to collapse.

Thanks again, 52%.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke

etc. etc. etc. with several other commenters above, unsure of why it was 11/12.

I'm pretty sure the two questions most likely to trip people up were either "Titanic left from..." and "Germany founded in...".

Southhampton/1871 were the right answers, for those wondering.

The other 10 were gimmes.

Didn't look at the quiz, but here's one we might put out there:

1) Is "Austrian" a language, and where is it spoken?

2) Define/explain the most common ratio discussed in the equities markets, known as the "P/E ratio"

3) Describe the difference between liability-only and comprehensive types of automobile insurance

4) Pick one: the US Constitution was the first founding document in human history to a) limit the power of government andmake the individual citizen and individual liberty theprimary principle b) divide power between different geographical entities (states) c) lay out a charter of negative liberties

5) Using any number as a starting point, give an example of a 3000%decrease

6) True/False: amputation procedures in the US have been documented to be driven by physician financial incentives and not medical neccessity

Hmmm. Think of anybody who might fail this one?
