So The Government Declaration That Not Eating Breakfast Would Make You Fat, and It Turns Out They Had No Real Proof of That and Also It's Completely Wrong

And now it's disproven.

If you want to keep talking about the Hillary email scandal, please do, that post is below. But I thought i would offer this change-up from MKH for the end of the day.

I have just about heard enough from "government nutritionists."

Researchers at a New York City hospital several years ago conducted a test of the widely accepted notion that skipping breakfast can make you fat.

For some nutritionists, this idea is an article of faith. Indeed, it is enshrined in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the federal government’s advice book, which recommends having breakfast every day because “not eating breakfast has been associated with excess body weight.”

As with many nutrition tips, though, including some offered by the Dietary Guidelines, the tidbit about skipping breakfast is based on scientific speculation, not certainty, and indeed, it may be completely unfounded, as the experiment in New York indicated.

At 8:30 in the morning for four weeks, one group of subjects got oatmeal, another got frosted corn flakes and a third got nothing. And the only group to lose weight was ... the group that skipped breakfast. Other trials, too, have similarly contradicted the federal advice, showing that skipping breakfast led to lower weight or no change at all.

“In overweight individuals, skipping breakfast daily for 4 weeks leads to a reduction in body weight,” the researchers from Columbia University concluded in a paper published last year.

The article then discusses, get this, why government scientists get so much wrong, turning speculation and witchfancy into official government recommendations.

I've lost a fair amount of weight by a combination of calorie restriction, Atkins, and (sporadic) exercise. I've also been Intermittent Fasting, which just means that rather than eating from, say, 7am to 7pm at night (12 hours of an "eating window"), you instead skip breakfast and have lunch at say 1 and dinner at say seven so that your eating window is only six hours long.

In the first instance, you are in a "fed" state (where the body gets energy from food being digested) for 12 hours, and a "fasted" state for 12 hours.

In the second, you are in a fed state for only six hours, and a fasted state for 18 hours.

The theory here is that if the body does not have a reserve of being-digested food to power itself, it must burn fat to provide you with the energy, because what other choice does it have?

So by shrinking the eating window, and expanding the fasting window (and remember, your sleeping hours are all fasting, so those are freebies), you force your body to metabolize fat.

This is becoming a very popular thing; Hugh Jackman does it, famously.

And of course these guys (content warning for language and sexual references):

Does it work? As I'm doing several things, I can't say it definitely works, because, who knows, it could be the other things that are working. However, Atkins seems to have stopped working for me, so I do think it's the IF (Intermittent Fasting).

The thing is, IF works as a calorie-restriction regime, because, when you delay the first meal and refuse late-night eating and snacks, you're automatically restricting yourself from eating a lot of excess calories. And I gotta think that eating late at night (I used to do it all the time; it made me sleepy, so I ate as a soporific) goes right to fat.

But I don't know. It seems to work for me.

A guy on twitter, I think a commenter here too, cobrownell, said there was a lot of scientific/nutrition/medical interest in IF, and at least some studies indicate that there's something to it.

By the way, I have no idea where "witchfancy" came from.

But I saw them open for Blustery Gonadal Defiance at Ozzfest in 2002.

Oh: I have heard women should not do this IF regimen for more than 3-4 days without 1-2 break days in between. Not sure why. Just something I've heard.

Could be bro science.

Oh 2: Obviously, anyone with hypoglycemia or diabetes should only do this in strict consultation with a doctor.

2 Oatmeal or frosted flakes? How about protein for breakfast? Me, personally, if I don't eat a small, protein-filled breakfast, I am starving at lunch and eat too much.

I'm losing weight without suffering one bit, albeit the loss is slow. I eat meat and veggies and, when I really want pasta or bread, I eat it, but most days, when I place an order, I ask them to leave the bread out of my meal. If I don't see it, I don't miss it.

We don't have to suffer to lose weight.

4 Hugh Jackman may skip breakfast, but he also has a giant smoothie of HGH instead.

Skipping breakfast probably works for some people, while it causes others to gorge themselves later in the day. Personally, I have to eat breakfast or I'm borderline murderous.

I miss it sometimes. once you're off the carb/sugar addiction, you crave it much less.

However, every once in a while you want to eat those delicious, delicious carbs.

9 Everyone's body is similar, yet different.

I find I keep my weight down via adequate sleep, resisting the urge to eat after 8:00, and drinking plenty of fluids.

Strangely - fluids really does include beer - as long as I don't mix beer with any meal larger than a dinner salad.

But - I'm active. Not in a CrossFit or GymRat sense - but in an Always Busy Screwing with Something sense.

10 This isn't wildly surprising to me because your metabolism doesn't really start going until you eat. If you delay eating, you delay your desire to eat. That doesn't mean that lack of breakfast won't make you cranky and tired, but it's not necessarily going to make you fat.

When I was younger, working a lot of hours, I skipped breakfast (I had coffee). And I was able to maintain my weight.

Now, I feel the need to eat a decent breakfast, and it manages my hunger better throughout the day.

For me, it is ALWAYS about the calorie count.

Beware of fasting, no matter what. It is a trend, and sometimes trends are good, sometimes bad. I know that hormonal fluctuations occur, and hormones are linked to just about everything, including certain cancers.

I have no idea how it all pans out. I think is more about the make up of your body, and how you were fed as a baby and small child, what your body got used to. (I'm saying this only if you ate healthy all along, which my family did.)

Yep, just two small bits of meat n' cheese, about 300 calories worth.

Holds me till dinner, which is a good sized chunk of beef or pork or chicken or fish.... meat.

And a green veggie or something like butter beans or black-eyed peas.

One solitary 16 oz can o' beer with dinner. A nightcap of a good slug of bourbon, neat. "Slug", being about three or four fingers in a rocks glass.

I'll serve that up 'round about 10 pm, and it'll last me till snoozetime 'bout midnight.

Living thus, I've been enjoying a slow but steady loss, from about 230 lbs. down to 205, and fading. Once I hit 190, I'll look to hold that and not fall below 180/185.

And folks, it's all scratch cooking for dinner here, with real quality ingredients and nothing packaged. If you're gonna go on thin rations, go on good, tasty thin rations!

I don't believe in plateus, so if low carb stops working, the USUAL reason is you need to up your dietary saturated fat intake because you aren't taking in enough fuel. Carb/calorie creep doesn't seem to be an issue with you, and that's the most common reason.

66 Wasn't it Kellog's that paid for the study that found that breakfast was "the most important meal of the day" years ago?

Breakfast is anytime YOU decide to break your overnight fast.

I figured out in my early 20s that I was far hungrier for lunch if I ate breakfast than I was if I skipped it. Sure enough, the guy at Lean Gains explains that your cortisol level is at its peak shortly after you arise. If you eat while your cortisol is spiked, for *some* people, it's like pouring igniter fluid on their appetite. I am definitely one of those people.

In my experience, weight gain becomes more of a problem as you age. Less physical activity seems to translate into more fat retention, and more difficulty in maintaining a specific weight.

In my mid-seventies, I consume considerably less than my early years, but try to consume 4-5 times daily with small amounts of specifics. No potato chips, booze, or weight gaining snacks in the house, and it works well for me.

Dessert? Two or three papaya tablets from GNC after the night meal and it doubles as a digestive aid and the mind believes its a sweet.

72 2 Oatmeal or frosted flakes? How about protein for breakfast? Me, personally, if I don't eat a small, protein-filled breakfast, I am starving at lunch and eat too much.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at August 11, 2015 08:30 PM (PMlgt)

Bingo. If I eat something high in carbs like cereal or a bagel for breakfast, I'm hungry again a couple hours later. Then I'm tempted to snack, and guess what? Most snack food is also high in carbs. So it's easy to get into a vicious cycle.

If I eat a protein-rich breakfast like bacon and eggs, I'm good until lunch.

For years on workdays, I had a McDonald's breakfast like a Sausage McMuffin, hash browns, and apple juice. When I learned the truth about carbs, I cut out the hash browns, substituted coffee for the apple juice, and kept the Sausage McMuffin.

If I was going to be fanatical about it, I would throw away the muffin and just eat the sausage, egg, and cheese.

The last couple of times I had my cholesterol checked, it was slightly high but not alarmingly so. I haven't been able to cut out carbs altogether. I love mashed potatoes and rice pilaf. I do try to eat smaller portions.

But from what I have been reading in recent years, there is absolutely nothing wrong with saturated fats, particularly animal fats.

There is also the little detail that cholesterol is essential to cell health, sort of like how carbon dioxide is essential to plant life.

Posted by: rickl at August 11, 2015 08:48 PM (sdi6R)

73 >>>I don't believe in plateus, so if low carb stops working, the USUAL reason is you need to up your dietary saturated fat intake because you aren't taking in enough fuel.

this could be it-- I have been on a hardcore diet of virtually only protein for long periods. Maybe I have to make sure I get my cheese on.*

the thing is, i'm losing weight, but i'm usually not in good ketosis. Low levels, trace, etc.

*it's not really intentionally hardcore -- I'm just eating mostly grilled chicken lately. I don't really want much else most days.

If I were told I could only choose one food to eat for the rest of my life, eggs would be it. I eat a lot of them.

I have very high cholesterol, but I have my entire life, and every test I have had has confirmed that my arteries are clean. Several years ago a neurologist told me that he thought it would be less than 10 years before the cholesterol scare would prove to be complete nonsense. He said "Look at you!"

I do have CHF, but that's due to a virus that caused my immune system to attack my heart. CHF is also to blame for my drastic weight gain. Depression accompanied with forced inactivity is a killer.

It's possible to consume heroic quantities of beer without developing the classic "beer gut".

I have several theories as to why this may be. Theories loudly slurred in the hour before closing time.

One is that the rice used in many classic American pale lagers (Budweiser, et cetera) is in some way at fault. I can't postulate a mechanism, but I certainly and reliably observe the correlation.

I would use myself as a guinea pig in the finest scientific tradition, but I can't stomach drinking that stuff in more than the occasional single dose.

I don't do this for weight loss.
We do it to maintain, but also to feel good.

I'm high after exercising. I'm not hard core (I was when I was younger, because I was on just about every sports team I could find; same for husband), but I do something every day, even if it is a 45 minute walk. Light weights 3 days a week, recumbent, elliptical, walking, etc, the other days, but not enough to make me sick of it. We quit our softball and volleyball teams a few years ago, and just haven't picked up team sports again. But you didn't even think about what you were eating when engaged in sports like this.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette at August 11, 2015 08:55 PM (qCMvj)

97 I can attest that moderate fasting can help one lose weight. It seems to act as a sort of kickstarter. The trick is, you have to see it through the first couple of days to overcome the three-square-and-snacks routine.

I really need to try this again. The times I was successful, I was feeling ill and had no desire to eat much, and just sort of carried it over when I recovered.

if you're doing weights, you are building muscle too, so the weight loss might not be obvious right away (this happens to my hubby, not me, he tones up, but doesn't drop weight, yet his clothes get baggy)

I had one doc put me on testosterone. Her office staff pissed me off royally as being incompetent fools, so I switched doctors. Doctor #2 took me off testosterone completely, said the whole T thing was way, way, way overhyped.

I'm now low-normal for my age group without T supplementation.

For what it's worth.

It brought the levels back up, but he had to stop because of the side effects. Hair falling out on his head, acne, increased aggressiveness and irritability.

139 1. So much for the allegation in the sidebar about corporate sponsored research.

Also this is the study that's supposed to change my mind"

At 8:30 in the morning for four weeks, one group of subjects got oatmeal, another got frosted corn flakes and a third got nothing. And the only group to lose weight was ... the group that skipped breakfast. Other trials, too, have similarly contradicted the federal advice, showing that skipping breakfast led to lower weight or no change at all.

"In overweight individuals, skipping breakfast daily for 4 weeks leads to a reduction in body weight," the researchers from Columbia University concluded in a paper published last year.

Four week study.

Both breakfasts were carb based.

143 I've been saying for years that breakfast is the meal that makes you fat, recommendations be damned. There's a simple logic to it all, really. Think of what we generally eat for breakfast. There's all kinds of high-calorie things like gravy, eggs, cheese, and fatty meats. And to add insult to injury, it doesn't stay with you like other meals do. A couple hours later, you're hungry again. If you just have a plain bagel, you get the same effect for a lot less calories. If you get in the habit of not eating in the morning, you can eat a somewhat bigger lunch and still save on calories. Either way, you're better off.

147 Hell, I let my doc talk me into talking Testosterone shots. Mine was really low (it was actually likely do to various other drugs I'm having to take), around 225, and I qualified for "medically necessary" T treatment.

I hate to got TMI, but hell, I didn't really notice anything, could still work a decent uh, turgidity reaction. But I started taking the shots.

About 2-3 days after each "hit", I get horny as holy hell. I could give you more information, but I won't subject ya'll to that.

Actually, really, there's some side effects (stomach cramps a few days before I'm due for the next shot, likely due to T levels crashing back down -- sort of hormone roller coaster effect).

When people were rolling out to go do sunup to sundown unremitting hard physical labor on farms and ranches, including in freezing weather, a big stack of pancakes (plus the rest of a huge rural breakfast) got burned up metabolically with no real problem.

For those who still do that or the equivalent, it's still no problem.

178 73 this could be it-- I have been on a hardcore diet of virtually only protein for long periods.

* * *

That could be your problem. Look up gluconeogensis. It explains the mystifying Dawn Syndrome that diabetics often deal with. Bottom line is, the body will turn excess protein into glucose and store it as fat...so you think you're eating well but excess protein sabotages fat loss.

The long-haul winning formula is

*low-to-very low carb

*moderate (controlled) protein,

*high fat.

Burn the fat, build with the protein, spare the carbs. Done.

Is it hard, boring and often inconvenient? Yes it is, but I'm forestalling diabetes which I know is lurking in my genes, so it's worth it.

Of those three components, fat must be the highest.

228 Yes, calories are calories. The laws of thermodynamics hold. They trivially hold. Everywhere and always. But what you eat has a lot more effect on you that just calories in and out.

Put diesel fuel in your gasoline burning car. It won't run worth a shit, shit will get all messed up, and efficiency will go to hell, but the laws of thermodynamics are holding, same as when you're burning the correct fuel for that car.

Same with eating.
Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at August 11, 2015 09:25 PM (dvuhZ)

The problem with saying "calories are calories" is that it totally ignores the different biochemical pathways that are used to break down the macronutrients in the body.

The body is not an engine. There is not one pathway that the fuel takes from the tank through the fuel lines, fuel injector, piston, exhaust system.

There are LOTS of pathways. Each one acts differently, depending on a whole lot of different conditions.

Each one has a different endpoint--some end with storage of excess energy in the form of body fat, some end with excretion of excess carbs/fat/protein, some end with using the broken down food for bodily structures and functions.

Food is NOT fuel. Some of food is fuel, but it is used for a lot more than just energy. The food as fuel analogy is completely, totally wrong, mistaken, misleading, an just a bit disingenuous.

So, in short, calories are NOT calories when it comes to food and its caloric load/effect on human metabolism.

Saying it doesn't make it so. It just makes you sound silly, frankly.

Are you suggesting that a person might weaken and waste away even as they gain weight?

Under certain conditions, you can almost double the calories you take in but lose excess body fat, and with little or no change in energy expenditure (exercise).

This has been my experience, as well. Maybe twenty years ago, I was closing in on 300 pounds and swore that I'd be damned if I ever weighed 300 lbs.

A doctor (a bariatician, in fact) irst time in Atkins, like magic, 40 pounds gone, poof.

Listened to the siren song of "oh, just eat anything you want, in moderation."

Yeah. Right. Moderation. Gained most (but not all) of that back.

Went back on Atkins. Lost the weight again, but it went more slowly.

Got to the point where I figured "hey, maybe I can handle that "moderation" thing again."

Nope.

After moving to a new town, I signed up with another bariatrician who does the medically-supervised packaged-protein-meal diet program, lost more weight, got down into the 220's.

Moderation time!

Up to the 250's.

Back on the protein-package-meal plan. Down into the 230's, where I've pretty much stayed for better than a year, trying (and occasionally failing) to avoid carbs but otherwise eating more or less normally.

So yeah, it's a constant battle.

Your body is an asshole. I mean, really, everyone's. Basically, the fucker got used to the diet. Same thing happens to people that do an exercise for a long period of time. Their body gets used to it and it stops working.

That's one of the reasons that diets involve cheat days a lot - it's partially to keep people from giving up and partially to shock a body with different foods.

300 For all you boiled people, have you had marinated eggs before?
Put a dozen eggs out to get them to room temp.
Put a pot of water with about a tsp. of baking soda in it, it helps to peel the eggs. When the water is boiling carefully put the eggs into the pot and boil for 7 minutes.
Take them out and plunge them in ice water, when they are cool enough to handle peel and place them in a shallow Tupperware so they are in one layer.
Mix up 1 tsp sugar, 3 oz. water, a few teaspoons of apple cider or rice vinegar, and a cup of soy sauce (low sodium if fine). You can add other flavoring if you'd like, I put a clove or two of minced garlic. You can ad a pinch of crushed pepper for a bit of heat. When every thing is well mixed pour over the eggs and let them marinate for at least 4 hours or more, stirring them around every so often so thye marinate evenly, depending on how salty you want them. Then remove them from the marinade and store in the fridge in a sealed container, they will keep for 3-4 weeks. You can save the marinade and use it for you next batch. I usually get about 3 batches before I make it new. Easy to grab and snack on and low carb.

301 Calories is just a measure of the chemical potential energy available via combustion. In fact it can be measured in a device called a bomb calorimeter.

You lose weight by losing mass.

Done so via pee, poo, sweat, and breathing.

Track mass, not calories.

You can have material that possesses significant amounts of calories leave your body not by combustion.

This is where the disconnect between weight and calories originates.

You can get an $8 jar of organic stuff (needs to be organic because the processing takes out a lot of the good stuff) at most grocery stores. Spoonful or two a day, you can just eat it (although it's kinda gag worthy because of the richness factor). Coffee is fine, not much of a taste to it. Makes a great lotion as well, just don't use it on your face if acne prone.

You can but it will ride on top. I take heavy cream in my coffee which helps the coc. oil mix in well. Otherwise, I fry eggs in it and put it in basically everything I cook. And I mean everything.

Lou-Ana (basic bleached coc. oil) is fine but I like the taste of coconut so I use Spectrum or Kelapo. I take a spoonful a few times a day. Love it.

Oh, my other magic bullet (may not work for you but it never fails me): steel cut oats with butter and coc. oil, plus a bit of sugar free syrup. I've tested my blood glucose response to steel cut many times and have NEVER had it trip my insulin. Test it for yourself to see but if you like oats, that's the way to go.

310 Regarding exercise and weight loss: Intense and frequent exercise is great for you, but it is not necessarily compatible with a weight loss program using a controlled diet (caloric restriction or Atkins or whatever). You may lose weight, including body fat, faster if you restrict calories and maintain a lower intensity activity such as walking 10k-14k steps/day.
Totally anecdotally, I've seen a 40-ish female ironman triathlete and recent mother who wanted to lose a fair amount of excess weight do a low calorie diet alongside an obese mother of a similar age, and the triathlete lost none of her excess body weight while the other mom lost about 5% of her body weight over 2 months.
I'm sure this is not true for everyone but I think it is plausible that high-intensity dieting should not go alongside high-intensity exercise. Your body has ways of compensating for caloric deficit, and adding stress on both ends may be counterproductive.

317 I'm of the mind that when you're craving a particular food, there's a reason for it. Your body needs something that's in that food.

It's then a good idea either to go for that particular food, or try to identify what exactly it is that your body needs and look for a "healthier" way to satisfy the craving. The latter may require some trial and error, though.

If there's a particular food you're craving, and you don't feel like you should be eating it right now... for example, chocolate cake... try thinking about the ingredients in a chocolate cake and see if anything jumps out at you. You could actually be craving chocolate, sugar, milk, flour, or eggs (or more than one of those things), and you might be able to think of a less decadent way to get those things. Even if you're just craving pretty much everything in a chocolate cake, maybe a glass of chocolate milk and a handful of crackers would do the trick for you.

320 Consider CICO a simple - the most simple - currency of energy.

If I have a mass of food, it contains some number of calories.

If I take the same food but increase its component, discreet items by an equal amount, I'm going to increase the currency available.

If I want to lose weight, I need to eat the smaller pile.

Now, I can screw with the equation in innumerable ways depending on the component parts, but any given pile larger than the other will provide fewer calories and my body will have to provide the rest if I'm burning more than the pile provides.

I'm not trying to be condescending here, but the upshot of all of this is not all that complicated. The pathways of metabolism are terribly complex; the pathway to weight loss really isn't. Calorie counting is just a convenient way to measure the size of the pile.

323 Pure unrefined coconut oil is wonderful. I buy the giant tub at Sam' or Costco. I make body scrubs and balms with it. It's great for dry skin and scalps, both internally and topically.

Posted by: lindafell de Spair at August 11, 2015 09:57 PM (xVgrA)

324 Under certain conditions, you can almost double the calories you take in but lose excess body fat, and with little or no change in energy expenditure (exercise).

CICO would say it's impossible, but it's not. Sorry.
--------------------

Ah. But that is the inverse of the circumstance, which is to say that certain foods do not metabolize (for a particular person) as other foods do.

That is not the same as saying that constraining caloric intake (regardless of the food) to some number less than the calories expended in daily activity will not result in weight loss.

We're dealing with simple physics here. No matter what a person eats, so long as it is nutritionally adequate, they will lose weight if the caloric outlay exceeds the caloric intake.

There's nothing mysterious about this. There just isn't.

Breakfast- 2 hard boiled eggs.

Dinner- Same as lunch.

Evening- No more than 2 beers, bourbon.

Not including the beer and booze (your body can't store alcohol calories), I was eating 800-900 calories a day.

It worked. It sucked, but it wasn't unbearable. Having a few drinks in the evening didn't exactly help, but there's no way I'd have kept up with the diet if I couldn't allow myself a few drinks before bed, as is my custom.

383 Late to the party, and I haven't read the comments so something like this might have been mentioned, but I've been doing a fasting type thing since the end of February. Two days a week I eat 500 calories or less. The other five days I eat whatever I want whenever I want. That's it. I lost ten pounds right away... within four weeks or so. Lost another ten pounds over the course of the spring and early summer. Then I stopped losing. This is kind of what I thought would happen, actually. That eventually my body would adapt to this new caloric level. So I still do the fasting days, and I have maintained the 20 lb loss. I suppose I could, like, exercise more. I walk briskly (commuting) about 25 minutes each workday, and on Sundays I walk to church, about 15 min. Sad to say that's about it other than regular life stuff. Or I could add another low-cal day and see what happens. But I've been pretty pleased with the results. Pretty painless, all in all.

Yeah, that's why I have a shelf full of diet books and biochemistry manuals that I got to see for myself if what they were saying in the diet books was BS or now.

Plus the TWO bariatricians (MD's with board certifications in the weight loss specialty of bariatrics, by the way) who both put me on low-carb diets, the first one Atkins, 20 years ago, and the other, protein meal replacements, starting about six years ago. Those guys don't know anything, I'm sure.

Posted by: Ready For Hillary!!11!! at August 11, 2015 10:11 PM (Dwehj)

392 Of course it is CICO. Simple?
Problem is: 1) people are pretty bad at being aware of CI, and limiting CI; and 2) measuring CO is really hard.
Number 1 is obvious, every dieter knows eating less is easier said than done. But sure, it works.
Number 2? If you exercise more how much does that increase your CO? It's not at all obvious. Your body can compensate for caloric deficit by decreasing basal metabolism in a variety of ways, and of course handle energy in different ways that often tend to increase body fat and of course scream for you to eat more.
So sure, live in a whole-room closed system metabolic chamber with a defined diet, and yes, CICO.
But for people living in the world that are not accurately measuring CI and definitely not CO, it might help to have a diet plan that tends to improve the CICO equation without the exquisite attention it could require if you treat all calories the same.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, Hardliner at August 11, 2015 10:11 PM (9mTYi)

394 Ah. But that is the inverse of the circumstance, which is to say that certain foods do not metabolize (for a particular person) as other foods do.

And that's precisely the point CICO advocates tend to ignore or refuse to admit is a reality, for others if not for themselves. It's almost as if they think we're lying and, bafflingly, some CICOs seem to get personally offended when we say it. I really don't get it.

Going out on a limb here...you don't have a history of any insulin-related issues, right? For some of us, that's the game changer, and CICO does not and cannot account for it. Sucks to be us but what is, is.

If I go back to eating SAD (Standard American Diet, the carb-heavy pyramid), I'll be fat AND diabetic within 10 years, tops. Even my doc confirms I seem to be delaying it on my current path, and that calories *in and of themselves* have nothing whatsoever to do with it.

As I said before...I have more than once upped my net caloric intake without changing expenditure (exercise) and STILL lost body fat. I'm not asking anyone to believe that but if they don't, they can take one week to test it for themselves.

The body can burn protein and can burn glycogen for energy.

you can't burn glycogen when you have none left (atkins) and as far as burning protein, there is no "stored protein" in the body. there is protein that's being digested, or protein converted to something that isn't protein (such as fat).

The stored sources of energy are glycogen and fat.

445 Chicken breast and lean pork are awesome for losing weight.

Before I started paying attention to calorie counts, I didn't fully appreciate how few calories there are in a modest 5 or 6 ounce portion of either.

Eggs too- a large egg is only about 80 calories.

That eggs, pork loin and chicken taste good and are easy to prepare is just a bonus.

yes but to be honest if your eating window is tight, like 6 hours, it's hard to eat as much as you used to because you just can't eat that much in that window.

so it imposes its own calorie restriction.

about one quarter of all days, I have a single meal. Another quarter i have two. Half, I have a meal, plus like a half-meal, of cheese and olives or something, in the evening.

protein that's being digested, or protein converted to something that

Posted by: ace at August 11, 2015 10:24 PM (dciA+)There is protein available for catabolysis in most tissues of the body. And in a pinch...like every day...people burn a little muscle. And of course glycogen and fat are used all of the time.
All of these metabolic pathways are active 24 hours/day. It's the ratios that change depending on diet and demand and all sorts of stuff.

470 To be fair, genetics does have some bearing on body types and the propensity to being over weight.
I remember read a study the said there are only two periods in your life that you actually make fat cells, from birth to about 3, and during puberty. So if you gain weight you are only increasing the size of your fat cells, not actually laying new ones down. The flip side is losing weight is only shrinking your fat cells, not actually getting rid of them. Fat cell by their nature want to be full. That is one of the reasons it's hard for most to lose weight, and keep it off, your fat cells panic when they are shrinking and tell you you're hungry so they can refill. Dieting is less effective the more times you have lost weight and regain it since your fat cells become resistant to shrinking. Hence, it's harder to lose weight the older you get.

I'd agree in general that this is a pretty bad idea . . . not knowing where you're starting from, I'm talking out of my ass of course.

My bariatrician wanted me to shoot for 2-5 pounds a week during the most intense phase of weight loss.

He was also doing a lot of blood tests to make sure I wasn't killing myself.

As it stood, I wound up losing my gall bladder due to the zero-fat diet I was on at the beginning.

(Gallstones were disclosed as a possible side-effect from the diet . . . turns out that the gall bladder actually needs some amount of fat in your diet to work properly!)

530 I think it was on this very blog when Kagan was 'running' for the supreme court that I found out that she and Hillary! had actually re-written the American College of OB/GYN standards of care in the '90s through their control over Medicare residency funding.
I'm still shocked about that. The government, long before the ACA writing the abortion rules for doctors. Deciding issues of health care when not only are they wholly and dangerously unqualified to decide such things but their decisions are made from a political perspective and they could give a shit about actual patients.
People like that should be hung from lamposts.

I got it all back, because I kept eating like that after my metabolism slowed down, but building bone takes lots of calories.

543 For me, the number one most important factor for losing weight was preparing meals in advance.

Nothing else came close. It was and is THE deciding factor.

If I hard boil 10 eggs and smoked or cooked enough chicken and pork that I had breakfast and lunch prepared in advance for the work week, I'm be golden. If I don't do this... the vending machine start to look pretty fucking tempting. Forgot to bring a healthy lunch? Well hitting McDonalds just this one time can't be that bad, right?

It's not, except that once you've given yourself permission to do it once, it's damned easy to convince yourself to repeat the mistake.

dingdingding!

I spend most of Sunday evening cooking, usually one or two big meals to get me most of the way through the week. Around Wednesday or so I'll cook some simpler stuff like burgers or chicken thighs on the grill to finish the week.

I know I'm slow to wake up in the morning, so I cook breakfast the night before, plate it, throw some cling wrap over it and toss it in the fridge. Alarm goes off at 0600, I'm eating a solid meal at 0610.

Impulse eating will be the death of any nutrition plan.

I've got a large number of good friends I've developed over the past several decades. Almost all of them are connected to Citroen in one way or another. They're scattered all throughout SoCal. There are some in this group I've known for 40 years. These are generally people I can have a difference of opinion with, and still drink beer with 'em. I've spent a lot of time working on the relationships to go with the cars.. I'm not about to just throw all that away. Being sick pretty much all of last year put it all in jeopardy. I'm not happy about that. That's why even though there is some effort on my part, I've started going again, even though it's by train from San Diego and I have to arrange for the dialysis a day (Mon/Wed/Thu instead of Mon/Wed/Fri) early when I go for the weekend.

I warned you it was a long story.

551 I've been on Atkins, with some cheating at times, for many years now. If I stay strict, I lose, slowly. If I cheat a little from time to time, no problem. If I have normal amounts of carbs for several days running, I can feel it in the fit of my clothes.

If I want the Atkins to work better, I make myself eat more fat. There's almost no such thing as too much fat on Atkins.

No coconut oil, though. I hate the taste and texture of the stuff, and it nauseates me. And yet I can eat a half-stick of good unsalted butter with pleasure.

552 If you like eggs, and you're not in the city, seek out someone with not too many chickens, ones who wander around eating bugs, and don't have too many other chickens to share the bugs with. You know, the kind of people who put up a small cardboard sign announcing that they have eggs.

The eggs will have yolks that are nearly orange, and will taste like heaven compared to supermarket eggs.

553 JMO, but the body uses calories by metabolizing blood sugar of the glucose type. It then replaces the blood sugar. What goes on between eating and placing glucose in the blood is very complicated, and not likely to follow the same path in each individual. Stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, (and a few other things I'm sure I'm missing), are all involved in this process. Therefore, what works for one person may or may not work for someone else.

554 #549: Oh, now I'm getting a craving for the advanced meal plan I occasionally do.

I go to the grocery store, and get a big, cheap beef roast, whatever's in the "buy it now, 'cause we're throwing it out tomorrow" discount section.

I toss that in the crock-pot with half a cup of soy sauce and half a cup of water, and cook it either overnight or during the day while I'm at work.

I then put it in the refrigerator and wait for it to cool, and the grease to form a crust on top. I then remove that crust with a spoon.

I'm left with a lot of meat and some really flavorful aspic. I tear off a hunk of that meat, and add a few spoonfuls of that aspic to a pack of instant ramen (prepared according to the directions on the package).

Still same weight as I was in high school 28 years ago.

Still eat in the same fashion:

Eat like a King for breakfast, prince for lunch and pauper for dinner.

Dinner: Protein and fat.

NO SNACk after dinner.

Sugar is the enemy, not fat. And by sugar I don't mean just desserts, anything that converts to sugar in the body should be avoided, or at the very least, eaten only on rare occasions.

559 I just got back from a grocery store run, to get a roast and cook as I described earlier. It was sounding really good to me, and it is a bit of a pain to go out for lunch in downtown Denver at noon, when most people are trying to get something to eat (I used to go to lunch a couple of hours later, and could do pretty much whatever I wanted at that hour). I've decided to experiment with bringing a lunch of my soy-sauce roast with ramen.

562 Glucose gets transported into cells via the insulin dependent pumps. What doesn't get transported goes to two places; liver and adipose cells. The liver, for an average person, has about 400 calories of stored "glucose". When fasting, and when the liver is exhausted, "glucose" is derived from adipose cells. The key there is that insulin and norepinephrine are required to bring that back out. So, to lower adipose cell volume, you need to run the liver down and have the shit scared out of you while running away from Jeb Bush, or zombies, whichever you encounter first.

A lot of people plateau on Atkins after a while.
There are theories that it starves bacteria in the gut, and/or leads to excessive iron. Diet advice seems stupid, yet diet books are always number 1.

Posted by: Seth at August 12, 2015 08:01 AM (ZZSkG)

565 @Ace post 563
They are not at a plateau per say, they are just eating to many calories.
And carbs are not the enemy they are made out to be, they actually have a place and role in the diet....they are not a required macro, but they are helpful.
Carbs are very good for kicking up the hormone leptin, which is the fat burning hormone, it tells your body to use fat. People who are fat or obese have a ton of leptin in their body, but do to their weight, the signals are muted and the body doesn't respond. Those people who are low in body fat, have very little leptin in their system, so bumping up carbs from time to time will help kick up a leptin response.
