Mini-Debate Open Thread

...which almost no one will be watching. It's on at 5 PM Eastern on Fox (in one minute).

Livestream here, thanks to peaches.

Because so few people will be watching, I will post new posts below this one for other commentary, and other reading.

For example, Comrade Arthur's "Thank God of the Atomic Bomb" post is directly below right now.

Please use this thread for debate chatter only. If I'm going to bother to watch and comment on the debate, I'd like those comments to not be lost in OT chatter.

No, he was my pick in 2012.

I don't even hate him today -- not a fan of his staff hires so far, but...

He just knows he tanked in 2011/2012 by sounding dumb in a debate, so I thought he'd have practiced extra hard not to sound dumb.

I have been sour on that particular technology for years. I just don't see how it's different than comments, except in bad ways.

Plus, then I have to get a coblogger to pump out your comments from the queue to the liveblog. There's human work needed there that is not needed in the comments.

"Levant" is not a better translation. That's the French word for the greater Damascus area. Which isn't really accurate for where ISIS is.

Al Sham is the name of the Assyrian providence that includes much of ISIS territory.

so "islamic state of Iraq and al Sham" is more accurate and historically correct then "iraq and the levant", which again was a colonial french division by geography.

Republican officials are expecting more than 3,000 attendees for the main event, making it perhaps the largest crowd ever hosted for a GOP primary debate. But the undercard debate won't have quite the same energy. That's because there won't be an audience at all.

In a situation akin to the Baltimore Orioles playing a game earlier this year in front of an empty stadium, the seven candidates will find themselves delivering talking points to a hollow auditorium that seats more than 20,000 people.

GOP sources say each candidate will be allowed to have a small handful of family, friends and campaign staffers present. They will be allowed to sit in the grouping of several thousand folding chairs on the floor of Quicken Loans Arena, but will be asked to refrain from applause.

Not that a smattering of claps inside this cavernous arena will do anything to sway the television audience at home. (Tim Alberta)

Following the early debate, Fiorina will be serving as her own spokeman in the spin room where media are gathered over laptops.

It's a sharply different tactic than some of the others expected to debate later in the evening. Already, Ted Cruz announced that a dozen of his aides and allies will flood the spin room, including campaign manager Jeff Roe, campaign chairman Chad Sweet and prominent conservative endorser Brent Bozell, founder of ForAmerica. Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

That's the whole theme of the latest book from Tingles Matthews: how awesome it was that Reagan and O'Neill "worked together for the good of the country".

Even most of the Perry supporters are just shaking their heads and calling it an election. If he wants to stick around he can. He has some money in the bank and he can make it stretch till New Hampshire if he doesn't buy advertising and sleeps in peoples living-rooms, but he's done. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) seemed to forget during Thursday's second-tier GOP debate for the presidential nomination that he served 15 years as governor.

"It just needs a corporate executive type at the top that's done it before. And I will suggest to you nobody's done it like Rick Perry has done it over the last eight years," Perry said.

Perry made this gaffe during his closing statement. He was governor from 2000 to 2015.

Maybe I can't fight city hall, but I also can't enable it. I voted for McCain ( Palin really) and I voted for Romney, but I refuse to compromise my values again. Actually, almost anybody in this lower tier debate would be easier to vote for than Jeb or Hillary, and IMO, almost anybody from this lower tier debate would be way closer to representing what I want in a president. Between Jeb and Hillary you would be hard pressed to say who was the lesser of the 2 evils. And as Jerry Garcia said, voting for the lesser of 2 evils is a vote for evil anyway.
