Opening Night Of GOP Debate Season!

It's Political Nerd Christmas! And it's made all the more festive thanks to the inclusion of Santa Trump!

If you think Political Nerd Christmas is coming earlier and earlier, you're actually wrong. In 2011, we were on our THIRD national debate by August 11th.

Obviously the wait has made the anticipation stronger, so to get you through the day until 9pm eastern tonight, some thoughts on what may happen and what each candidate is looking to do.

Conventional wisdom says everything revolves around the classy and luxurious 800 pound gorilla in the room. But what does Trump need from tonight? Not much I'd argue. He's at or near the top of every poll, he's sucked all the oxygen out of the race and his biggest danger is people might actually listening to something he says on an issue. That's assuming he has something to say beyond, "I will solve that problem and it'll be amazing. I tell you, amazing."

The early thinking was that he would serve as a punching bag for everyone else but that was before he really started dominating the polls. I'm not sure there's any reason for anyone to go after him. He's willing to say something dumber and more insulting than any regular politician is willing to say back so picking a fight with him basically turns you into Tim Pawlenty at some point. That's never a good look.

My guess is the moderators (Brett Baier, Chris Wallace, and especially Megyn Kelly) will do the heavy lifting of going after Trump so let them. Besides, who gains from it? Christie and Kasich might be willing to battle with Trump but that's just because they are combative pricks. The problem is there's no political advantage to being a Trump antagonist. If there were, Rick Perry and Lindsey Graham might have been able to make the big show. But notice they weren't.

Trump might just get a pass out of tonight from other candidates.

Or he might not be able to help himself and the whole thing devolves into a literal fist-fight with ten of them rolling around on the stage like the end of a WWE show. It could go either way. Don't try this sort of analysis at home, I'm a semi-trained professional after all.

As for the rest:

Jeb! needs to not look like a puppet of the rich GOP donor class who can't actually talk or think on his feet. He's not having a great week what with the generally unimpressive performance in NH and the War on Women gift to Hillary. CNN covered the gaffe, showed a bite from Hillary attacking him over it and then ran about 90 seconds of him saying dumb stuff. It was amazing. We're not at do or die time for him by any means but Jeb! has to get it in gear at some point. Tonight would be a good time for him to start.

Scott Walker: As I've said before, he's always just sort of there. I want more from the guy but that's not him. His approach has worked ok thus far so I imagine we'll get more of the same tonight. He'll talk about winning not just fighting and beating the unions. Hopefully he won't have time to tell his Kohl's shirt story. Solid and steady is the game plan and no one has managed to throw him off it yet. There's no real reason for anyone to go after him at this point so I doubt that will change tonight.

Mike Huckabee: Hey, did you know he's running? Well he is. Seriously. I know, right? Not sure what the point is but he's here. His big contribution will likely be as a foil for Christie on entitlements. Huck, like Trump, is in the "don't you dare touch them" camp so this will likely be an area where it's possible to get some actual policy daylight between candidates.

Chris Christie: I'm just putting him here because of what I wrote about Huckabee. I could see Christie going after Trump but I think Huck is the more likely target. It will depend on the how the moderators set it up. It'll be interesting to see if Christie's "I'm here to tell you hard truths about entitlements" shtick leads to an opening for any of the other candidates to say, "Well, if you're the entitlement spending sheriff how come you embraced ObamaCare's Medicaid expansion that's driving up the debt?" I'm sure he has some tough talking comeback ready for that but I think a lot of voters just starting to pay attention will be interested to hear that Christie has embraced Obama's boondoggle. Though of course it's not the only time Christie has embraced Obama.

John Kasich: Seriously Republicans? This guy? You put this guy in the debate over Rick Perry and have pushed him into 2nd in New Hampshire? He's Jon Huntsman without the dirt bike and winning personality. Another ObamaCare supporter because God wants him to, the guy will spin all sorts of BS about his big reelection win in Ohio (his opponent imploded when it turned out he was basically a griffter). He did an end run around the GOP legislature to implement ObamaCare in Ohio and it's already well over budget. He's defense of this is the lame and false, "well, it's just the people of Ohio getting their money back."

Again, SERIOUSLY GOP?

Rand Paul: As a Rand Paul guy all I hope is tonight isn't the night the unpinned hand grenade goes off. Trump helps him not be the focus of establishment ire but also hurts him by not enabling him to be the go to guy for the pissed off crowd. It was always going to be a high-wire act for Paul and in a crowded field he's struggled to gain traction after a good start (go ask Debbie-Wasserman Schultz about abortion!). Best case scenario is he continues to find ways to synthesize his libertarian roots with more mainstream conservatism. In small bites he might come off reasonable enough to get a look from some people. The danger is too much focus on the NSA and he doesn't sound tough enough on Iran (though if he's too tough on Iran, libertarian types get mad).

Ted Cruz: The issue of the moment for conservatives is Planned Parenthood. This plays into his wheel house more than others. I imagine he's hoping that one of the moderators or another candidate will bring up his calling Mitch McConnell a liar. If they don't, he should. As long as he doesn't lapse into Senate speak (and that's not his style) when talking about it, punching McConnell will be a big hit.

Marco Rubio: It's kind of slipping away or at least not moving forward for him. The growth of Trump has hurt him by sucking up attention and potential supporters but also by putting the focus on amnesty. That's never a good thing for Rubio. He'll want to avoid that as much as possible tonight and focus on how much he loves America (bold!) and how awful the Iran deal is.

Ben Carson: Tonight's going to be the high-water mark for the guy. He's parlayed a speech at a prayer breakfast into a sort of campaign. The exciting thing about that speech was that he called Obama out to his face. People liked that. A lot. But now there's someone else in the "I'm the successful outsider who will take it to the big guys" niche and a lot of GOP voters are more in the mood to tell the GOP off than Obama at the moment. After tonight a lot of people will be left wondering who this guy is and how the hell he did he get on that stage when Perry and Bobby Jindal didn't. He'll likely let slip some of more liberal positions, say on guns, and that will be all she wrote for him.

Oh yeah, there's a bunch of not very classy losers debating at 5pm. Guys like Perry are saying it will be more substantive than the clown show at 9 so he's pretty excited about that. Spoiler: Nope. Look, I'm with the margin of error of the people in the 5pm debate. No one cares and none of them are going anywhere. Their best bet is to hope Carson gets bored or falls out of the Top 10 and they can make the next debate (though I'm not sure they've announced how that one is working yet).
Think of it as the Play-In game for the NCAA tournament. Sure, if you win you get to go to the big dance but you're still a 16th seed sacrificial lamb.

Naturally we'll have coverage tonight at the HQ. What that means, I haven't a clue.

16 South of the border, hey, I know a lad,
He's got more fun than anybody's had,
Don't got no worry, don't got no dough,
Everybody's wondering 'bout Mexican Joe.
In old Mexico, they call him the Rhumba King,
Leads all the women around on a string,
When they go out, they get a million thrills,
But the lovely senoritas wind up with the bills.

Dancin', romancin',
Always on the go,
Sun shinin' down on Mexican Joe

He makes the night spots all along the bay,
People want to see him when he comes their way,
He spreads so much joy everywhere he goes,
Everyone shouts "Viva la Mexican Joe."
He likes to gamble, at poker he's an ace,
He's always lucky with the cards that got a face,
At winning the money, he is sure a whiz,
But when they win they don't collect
'cause they don't know where he is.

Dancin', romancin',
Always on the go,
Sun shinin' down on Mexican Joe

He don't no income tax 'cause he don't got no dough,
Still he gets along just fine, how we'll never know,
He's got everything he wants, a girl, a drink, a song,
If we use his formula, we surely can't go wrong.
His favorite playground is anywhere there's girls,
He's got that somethin' that sets their hearts a-whirl,
It couldn't be his money 'cause he ain't got a peso,
But when he wants a kiss all he's got to do is say so

Dancin', romancin',
Always on the go,
Sun shinin' down on Mexican Joe

54 My read is that Fox News, especially Chris Wallace, will try to trap the Donald on his past support of democrat policies and giving to the Clintons. Look for establishment republicans - which means virtually all of them except Cruz and maybe Walker - to try to get Trump supporters to fear a third party run, because it would guarantee the Hildebeast's election.

In return, look for Trump to call their supposed conservative bonafides excrement, and to deny a third party agenda. If he attacks the GOP establishment and the untrustworthyness of the media it will be scored a win.

Not sure how that dynamic will play out on a debate stage.

69 Trump to Chris Wallace: That"gotcha" trash won't work with me, Chris. The only reason you have a job is because of your old man, who, by the way, was a bigger piece of shit than you are. You are a pampered establishment prig of no value, whatsoever. Ao just go over and kiss Jeb's ass and get it the fuck over with. Next?

70 Politics is easy. It's not rocket science.

If you want to win, capture the imagination of the public by laying out a vision they can easily understand would work.

Trump shot to the front by saying he'll build a wall to stop illegals. People believe he can do it, so he's ahead.

Everyone else is mumbling about this or that policy, or how flat tax on a postcard is going to make things all better. Fuck. Who advises these guys? Oh wait, I know. Steve Schmidt.

If there was one smart person in tonight's debate, they would lay out an idea that would make people forget who else was on the stage. It would be all the media would talk about. If a question was asked of another candidate, it would be about the idea.

Make history. Be bold.

The moderators of every debate I've ever watched clearly have one or two people they want to help, and they want to destroy everyone else and trip them up in to saying something they can put in a soundbite and spent the next news cycle or two responding to, in serious ways.

132 The true under-the-radar political development of the last two days was Rupert Murdoch formally apologizing to Trump over calling him "an embarrassment".

What the tea leaves say on that one:

Murdoch is keenly aware that the fortunes of any big business wax and wane with the favor of government, which is far bigger.

Especially media businesses like his, which need governmentally controlled resources like broadcast spectrum. To say nothing of favorable tax treatment. He has always adroitly positioned himself on the side of those most likely to be *running* the government.

That's what he did in the UK, where the Murdoch papers were all staunchly Conservative (albeit with sex and scandal layered on top) during the Thatcher years. Then when John Major clumsily frittered away the Thatcher legacy, Murdoch saw the early rise of Tony Blair, concluded Blair was inevitable, and overnight all of the Murdoch properties' editorial line flipped to full-throated endorsements of Labour.

Murdoch had been assuming that either Jeb! or Hillary! were inevitable and had positioned himself accordingly to be on good terms with either one.

But when you see him carefully walking back his insulting comments about Trump? That's Murdoch making a cold-eyed mercantile reassessment of the situation and concluding that Trump might actually end up holding the brass ring.

136 My honest (and probably wrong) advice, as impartial as I can make it:

Jeb: You needs to play to your donors. Ignore everyone there and repeat the platitudes. Don't go off script again. Don't say anything a team of cuckolds hasn't validated with NBC and Disney. You are the soulless corporate choice. You can't afford a show of humanity. Please your masters, and they will do the rest, talking up your 'solid' performance.

Kasich: Talk up New Hampshire. You are running as a spoiler for Jeb and he will reward you if you do your job right. Pander to the granite state heavily, but avoid attacking Trump's supporters.

Trump: Fight the moderators. Take control of the debate. You are center stage. Make sure it is about you. Make sure the sound bites are about you. Spin the hell out of the post game that you were persecuted.

Christie: Your job is to attack Trump. Jeb will reward you. You need to go all-out. Insult everything about him. It'll destroy you, but you aren't a serious candidate anyway.

Carson: Attack Obama. Everyone else on the stage is too chickenshit to do it, but you did it once. Throw red meat out. Stick to anti-PC language. It will resonate.

Cruz: Attack Mitch McConnell and John Boehner. Burn those bridges. Attack Jeb. Attack the establishment. You have the most to gain by doing so.

Rubio: you are running for VP, so say you love America a lot. The party will look to you to give them hispanic votes. Promise them you can, and the donors will pass out from the blood rushing to their tools.

Walker: You gotta do something. You would be great at running Ankh Morpok because you're so quiet. You're a regular Havelock Vetinari. In fact, you might be doing whatever it is you do already.

Huckabee: Gay marriage and planned parenthood. Hammer on them and you lock up social conservatives. You won't win the nomination but you'll be a kingmaker.

Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk at August 06, 2015 10:50 AM (dhHd4)

137 If I were the other candidates, I would consistently refer to Jeb as "W" or "George".

I would not call him "Mr. Bush" or "Jeb" (and I would never call him governor - I hate the practice of calling people by the title of the office they no longer hold, it reeks of aristocracy. The title belong to the office, not the person) - instead I would always call him "W" or "George" and pretend it is a mistake.

Trump could trigger the great implosion in one sentence. It's always what I've expected. On the other hand, with a crisp, tough and competent performance he could really shake the GOPe's world.

In the long haul of the race, I see Cruz and Walker battling it out, with Paul throwing it one way or the other. Walker is the tortoise. But Cruz is not the hare -- what is he? The smartest, sharpest, most disciplined and an actual ballsy conservative to boot.

Here is a long shot suggestion: we know trump is savvy enough to not implode and to drive the tone of the campaign. What if he actually prepares for this debate? What does that do for the rest of the candidates? Trump is by far the most dynamic candidate there, any plan he has will make his opponents look pretty poor.

As for the loser bracket, I have only this to say: it isn't whether you win or lose, it is whether you win. (Trump Board Game Motto)

Everybody else has been mind numbingly conventional, like this was some campaign in 2000. The best way to beat Trump is to define yourself as the best candidate, not the smartest, or wisest, but the best. That requires a public killer instinct that most have been sorely lacking.

Wallace was the McCain campaign staff member who scheduled Palin for the infamous ambush interview by a hostile Katie Couric.

It has since come out that Wallace knew in advance the interview was going to be rigged. She and Couric colluded on it.

So, yeah, a great fit for MSNBC. And further proof that John McCain, who hired the treasonous Wallace into his campaign to begin with, is a complete dope.

See... Trump's plan might actually get passed. "The Rich" often won't mind paying 15% flat. It's probably about equivalent to what they pay now, and they don't have to pay an accountant so much.

The same is true of "the Middle Class" who will end up paying 10%.

Meanwhile, at the bottom end of the scale, someone making 30k/yr who whines about paying 1% ($300.00) is going to sound exactly like that: a whiner.

You actually get the low income crowd to pay *something* and start "Overton Windowing" the idea that *everyone* should pay taxes.

And, again, this is a guy who has just been saying "pass me the popcorn" while sidling up to the fire. It's weird to me that he has an actual policy idea I can actively support.

370 After about a year, the LIVs will be screaming "give us our withholding back!"

This.

In Texas, long ago, teachers used to get paid once a month (because the government exempts itself from its own laws) only in those 9 or 10 months of the year in which they are required to work.

The idea was that you should get paid while you're working, and be adult enough to budget appropriately.

The teachers complained- they wanted their salaries divided up into each of the 12 months to make their budgeting easier. So the TX legislature agreed and changed it.

Now the teachers complain that it's no fair people think they get paid all year for only working 9 months. They quite often protest that they, "don't get paid for a single day I don't work." You know, like the rest of us.

Believe it or not, Argentine's don't see themselves as "Latinos" and the same people as Mexicans or Guatemalans or Puerto Ricans. They all have very different cultures and other than speaking different dialects of the same language, have very little in common with each other.

Only racist white liberals like to lump everyone from "south of San Diego" together as "latinos" or "hispanics".

It was noted at WZ the other day that Boehner had wanted to bring the Meadows resolution (calling for Boehner's ouster) to the floor this week, so that it could be firmly and promptly disposed of by vote before Congress recesses. Proving the rock solidity of Boehner's power base.

Apparently Boehner was stunned when his lieutenants came back and told him they couldn't round up enough votes to make it a sure thing on the floor. So Congress goes into the August recess with the Meadows resolution still hanging over the uneasy Boehner.

Of course, if Boehner is ousted, the establishment GOP will no doubt immediately install a Boehner clone. McMorris-Rodgers?

Correct.

Given that this isn't a debate but a joint press conference with some minor amount of cross-examination, as others have noted, the important thing for a serious candidate is to stay on-message, positive, and above-the-fray.

Lots and lots of people will be watching that don't normally watch these things because of the "Trump curious" factor, so there is great opportunity to be steady and positive for one or two folks.

Obviously, that has been Walker's game plan all along and I don't expect that to change tonight. Rubio, Bush, and Carson could also do the same thing. Drudge is doing his best today to get a Bush-Trump battle royal going, but we'll see if Bush steps into that trap.

The key is looking like a normal person with strong accomplishments, and not a weirdo asshole. Walker should pass that test with flying colors. A few others might, too, but most of these guys will come off to the casual watcher as freaks, Huckabee, Cruz, Kasich especially. Trump is already expected to be a freak, so no surprise there.

.I was in the VA emergency Ward the other day with my wife and was sitting right next to the dispatchers desk with the radios on it. I was astounded at the number of people that get dumped into the VA system on an apparently daily basis.

I overheard one radio call from an ambulance service that had an unresponsive diabetic man in his 70s. The neighbor said that she thought he had been in the Army so they were bringing him to the VA instead of one of the other hospitals right downtown. Sad.

I predict that at least one Fox News talking head will say "This was a huge boost to Jeb Bush." They've got a warehouse stocked full of Jergen's and Kleenex they've been waiting to use to talk about Jeb and they're willing to do anything to finally break it out.

Absolutely no idea. And I know a lot of these people. I've been lectured on race by these people. They're all white, live in white suburbs, work in middle management surrounded by white people, and their only exposure to the outside world is CNN.

And yet they feel the need to Voxplain race relations to someone who has always lived in cities, and normally not in neighborhoods anyone would consider "white" and whose friends are almost all Spanish.

What I've found? Best race relations in America are in mixed Spanish / White neighborhoods and in the South.

Go to a ritzy suburb in New England and you'll see segregation like it's out of a movie from the 1920s.

And it was true to a certain point. Boston was one of the first immigrant melting spots and any wave of new comers was discriminated against and they then took it out on the next wave in turn.

The whole No Irish Need Apply thing was huge in Boston and they slowly took over to the point they dominate a lot of Boston politics, media and even sports. They were also the group that was most racist of blacks.

I think it was more about socio-economic crab crawling than hatred of skin color. Nobody wants to be lowest on the totem pole. Never found "class" to be a big thing. I grew up in an area with a lot of old money and a decent amount of new money. I never noticed a divide while I was living there.

I know, right? I think they posted it as an attempt to hurt Trump, but it's having the opposite effect. I'm watching it, and I'm laughing my ass off.

Posted by: OregonMuse at August 06, 2015 12:37 PM (j1VIK)

I laughed at this as well. Some of it was like a bad SNL sketch.

638 626 People from different South American countries may not have any affection for each other but they can definitely bond over their language and illegal immigration status against the North American white man.

Nah.

Also, my Argentine buddy cannot understand a word the Guatemalans say. Their dialects are that different.

You know who I found are the best universal translators though? Puerto Ricans. I don't know why, but for some reason my Puerto Rican coworkers could translate anyone else, even the Brazilians (who speak Portuguese).

639 Jeb needs to raise 100's of millions of dollars, super pac money, cooperate money.

Trump is a billionaire yet is getting his campaign 24/7 media coverage for less than pennies on the dollar.

Bush and the Rino's is the buffoon here?

640 So Boston should be judged by which? Their pioneering acceptance of a black player in basketball or their footdragging in baseball?

641 So, the Donald is channeling not only outrage, but absurdity and comic relief.

He just might be the candidate for the modern age.

Let us turn to Sun Tzu:

If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest.

646 "I wish Fiorina were in the debate. She has shown some real skills these last few months. Her presence would only be an asset. Instead, we're stuck with Kasich."

Ditto. Would love to see her break into the top tier somehow. Keep thinking that if enough people get a chance to see her, she might gain some traction and become a factor.

648 Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.

Posted by: Norman Lear, bleeding heart conservative at August 06, 2015 11:43 AM (E5UB0)

Herbert Hoover was an engineer. Engineers, by nature and training, have to be cautious and thorough, because if they aren't people can die.

649 Carly fiorina on Kudlow on CNBC back in the day 'there is no such thing as a God given American right to a job in this country anymore' which she ensured when she pioneered outsourcing all tech support & cust service jobs at HP AND insourcing via H1B visas

She couldn't give 2 shxts for Ameeican middle class or STEM jobs
She ran against Boxer for senate and was unimpressive

Ugh

650 Herbert Hoover was the GHWB of his day. A compassionate conservative. Judged against Calvin Coolidge, Herbie was a commie.

651 I don't like the idea that the moderators might "going after" any of the debaters.

If they treat Trump differently then the whole thing will be shown to be the farce and the failure that I suspect it is.

This Kasich thing has really got me ticked off. I cannot believe he got to that spot without help of some kind from inside. And that makes me wonder what else and how far will those insiders go to twist the election the way they want it.

Are they stupid enough to make it so obvious what they're doing? So far that seems to be the case and we well know they're opinion of the public isn't very high so it's quite likely they'll do something blatantly obvious at some point.

Which I believe will cause them to lose and lose big.

And that could be the beginning of the end.

Wow, that's a big turn-off. I wonder if she has "grown" enough during her candidacy to lie to us about this tendency.

Posted by: imp at August 06, 2015 01:52 PM (XIXZz)

653 It would be nice if one of our leading candidates could be honest with us for five minutes.

Jeb is busy getting ready to lose with dignity like the donors want. They've already got their cozy arrangements in DC and don't see the need to change anything.

Trump, the lifelong Democrat donor, supporter, and Friend of Clintons, who publicly admits he still supports many Democrat positions and has about as much political aptitude as he has luck in picking mail-order brides, decides he's suddenly a Republican because Bill asked him to be one. The ook-ook wing of lapsed Paulies goes wild because he's throwing the tantrum they want thrown.

Posted by: Richard McEnroe at August 06, 2015 03:18 PM (Kucy5)

654 The one minute/30 second format will favor Trump. He can (and will) say something stupid, and if another candidate calls him on it, he'll only have time to shout a bumper-sticker slogan back at them, The ook-ooks will love it.

One time 15% wealth tax?

I could be open to that. It's "the wealthy" constantly telling ME I don't pay enough in taxes and am not regulated enough.

Second the motion.

Posted by: BuddyPC at August 06, 2015 04:43 PM (jfUIE)

656 The format is the constraint, so regardless of the question, you answer or you don't. I think this will solve very little unless you make a major blunder, come off weak ot like a doofus.
The undercard may be more interesting but at this point who is not on the undercard ?
