The best part of the story:
It's also a crime to file a false report with the police and she was subsequently arrested with bond set at $1,000 and an invitation to visit with a judge on August 14th. Yeee-HAW! More of this, pls. Posted by: weft cut-loop at August 05, 2015 04:38 PM (VY8H5) 8
My concern is still the privacy issues.
I think these can be dealt with, but we'd have to make sure to do it upfront. Consider the following scenario. Someone in my neighborhood shoots off fireworks (not me.) I'm out in my back yard with my friends enjoying a bottle of wine and a (legal) campfire. Since my back yard faces the road (corner lot) cops always seem to bug is when something like fireworks happens. I've had a few drinks. I'm not mean and I'm certainly not breaking the law, but maybe I say something embarrassing. Now several months later for whatever reason someone with access to that video gets mad at me (maybe because I put up a sign in my front yard that supports pension overhaul.) They leak the video to someone who puts it on youtube. I did nothing illegal. I did nothing, frankly, unethical, but I'm embarrassed. The panopticon is something we should not take lightly. ALL cops should wear either a video camera or a microphone for audiotape.
I used to work on the parking ticket detail. There's a certain percentage of the population who figured out that if they make a complaint, the ticket goes away. The fact that the officer gets in trouble is a bonus. So....I started wearing one. It saved my ass the second day I wore it. Another government worker (go figure) got pissed off at me for daring to ticket her for blocking a hydrant. She called me every name in the book. I wouldn't take the ticket back after that rant, of course, which pissed her off even more. Before the hour was over, she contacted my sergeant. Said I questioned her sexuality, etc. I got called back in, early. I silently handed the tape over to my boss. He went off and listened to it. He returned, called her back in front of me and asked her if she wanted to listen to the tape. She didn't know I recorded her (legal in AZ at the time, I think it still is.) That complaint went POOF. Better yet, word got around and all of her coworkers at the.....wait for it.....state Department of Revenue markedly improved their behavior in a matter of days. Moral of the story......those stupid little cassettes were the best friend I ever had when I worked there, and they have other relatives who can be VERY pro-cop. DOOO EEET. Kind of like how flat screen TVs cost $20,000 when they were first introduced, and now only cost $200. As demand goes up, more suppliers jump in, more assembly lines are turned over to making that product, and that brings the cost down. Body cams are still in the "early adopter" stage of product evolution. Posted by: mynewhandle at August 05, 2015 05:11 PM (AkOaV) Posted by: Pappy O'Daniel at August 05, 2015 05:11 PM (oVJmc) 108
Nah, data is cheap. Compress the video down, don't save it forever (say, 6 months retention policy) and we're talking a one time $15,000 investment for a SAN for a normal sized PD. Plus the cameras themselves, which are between $100 and $200 each, but I expect that cost to come down as demand rises.
Lot cheaper then a lawsuit. Wasn't talking about storage. Talking about personnel and process. Put a camera on every cop and one in every cop car. 95% of these problems will solve themselves quick. I know a few Cops and most are OK guys but like anything else there are a few a$$holes who cause most of the problems. Put them on notice that they are on candid camera 24/7 and those problems will vanish virtually overnight.
They are not really that expensive when you compare them to the amount of money that States, Cities and Towns pay out in questionable settlements, especially Big Cities like NYC, Boston, Chicago, etc. And they will reign in the dirty cops. I don't want any enemies being able to see body cam footage if police come knocking on my door and I sure don't want would be thieves getting a tour of the security or lack thereof of peoples houses. States need to pass some privacy laws -maybe a court order is needed to view the body cam footage and they need to have some better IT security than the feds had with security clearance records.

I suspect that no amount of taping folks is going to get the assholes among us to quit assholing. Look at what is done in broad daylight these days, with no thought of what might happen. One function of the ghetto mindset is that thinking about what happens next is generally considered over-thinking the issue. Also, most folks who decide to become public assholes will do so often for the publicity as much as because they think they can get away with it.

Stuff like that really does sometimes make people stop and actually start to think about the possible negative consequences of exercising questionable judgement. If the system is corrupt and does not hold the government officials accountable *now*, is the same system with video cameras actually going to be less corrupt? Or does it just push the corruption into a different area? "Sorry, can't find you that video. The storage and all of the backups failed. For only that video, thankfully. We still have that heartwarming cat rescue footage from the other day." The technology can help, it's just not a cure for human accountability, which is always going to involve grinding against a bureaucratic system. (Why can I never remember how to spell bureau?!) That's exactly what I had rolling around in my head. It takes repeated episodes over some period of time for the public conscience to absorb a new normal, but it will happen as long as the public is acutely aware that the practice of false reports will not be dropped but prosecuted fully, every time. Savages will always be at the gates. You have to dump hot oil on them all every time or they become more emboldened to approach and take out a pillar. In my field, one is compelled to take two levels of exams in order to call oneself a 'Professional'. Neither exam is trivial. First, you must have a degree from an accredited curriculum. Then, there is the *first* state administered exam, which is no joking matter. Both are eight hour examinations. They leave you drained. After that, four years of *verified* work experience is required. Then comes the ballbuster exam. If one makes it through the exams, and believe me, they cause people to sweat blood, the one may call one's self, 'An engineer', but not prior to that. BTW, 57% of CE's fail. And, licences do apply across state borders. Move from GA to NC? Better start boning up for the NC PE examination, because you are no longer an engineer, or at least, you can't call yourself one. Good point there, but car dashcams will pretty much always be recording public areas.
A bodycam adds some privacy concerns and the corresponding need for oversight. And oversight is not cheap and not always effective - see the HIPAA and its issues. Posted by: ConservativeMonster at August 05, 2015 05:23 PM (0NdlF) Okay, and even if I concede that there could be some additional cost, I still think that this is one place where we shouldn't skimp out on spending money -- we're talking about government officials abusing their power, and pervasive rumors by citizens against said officials for abusing their power, with no way to know for sure what happened. Which, by the way, leads to a lot of BS lawsuits being settled out of court when a video could have saved the city a lot of money. So whatever the (minimal) cost, I don't think that should be an objection. I don't remember anyone objecting to dash cams (which were much more expensive at the time) due to cost. Privacy concerns, yes. Posted by: mynewhandle at August 05, 2015 05:42 PM (AkOaV) 208

Ferguson would not habe burned. Posted by: rd at August 05, 2015 04:36 PM (k3MbG) The ultimate irony. If the police actually spent a little up front they'd save a buttload later. Posted by: HoboJerk, Completely Unreasonable at August 05, 2015 06:03 PM (oRc1K) 257
Some Indians (the South Asian kind) are spring-loaded to claiming discrimination and victimization in a way that only Al Sharpton could admire.
Probably has to do with the caste system. Posted by: Logicia at August 05, 2015 06:03 PM (uSM1W) Posted by: The Facts at August 05, 2015 06:03 PM (dGKUu) 259
>>>>That's exactly what I had rolling around in my head.
It takes repeated episodes over some period of time for the public conscience to absorb a new normal, but it will happen as long as the public is acutely aware that the practice of false reports will not be dropped but prosecuted fully, every time. Savages will always be at the gates. You have to dump hot oil on them all every time or they become more emboldened to approach and take out a pillar. . . .Over the last couple of decades or so the public has been conditioned rightly or wrongly to believe that most Cops are bad, they are not your friend, etc. This is a near universal belief now and it wasn't that way just 20-25 years ago. That comes from various sources and for the most part is accepted by Society as a whole as truth. When that gets mixed in with videos of Police losing control on a near daily basis that just reinforces what Society believes to be true regardless of facts or circumstances. And people are going to take advantage of that. Those beliefs influence Juries and more importantly they unduly influence Governing bodies that hold fiduciary responsibility for the actions of their Police Forces, all of which leads to the recent increases in settlements for Police misconduct. If universal body/car cameras were introduced, I believe that the amount of those cases would fall drastically. It would also crack down on the rouge or bad Cops out there as a nice side effect. So the old joke about rolling them around in flour to find the wet spot is true. Who knew that old Black women had three tits. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be feeding that. Posted by: Nip Sip at August 05, 2015 06:07 PM (0FSuD) 262
If one were to go back to Zip's place now, there is a new thread concerning Cecil.
And it has an interesting twist to it. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at August 05, 2015 06:07 PM (VPLuQ) 263
As someone else mentioned, the major airlines have gone full SJW and are banning the transportation of legally hunted animal species capes, horns, etc.
See the following story at the Dallas Safari Club and the actual facts regarding the animals included in the airlines bans. http://dscnewscenter.org/2015/08/dsc-calls-for-lifting-of-air-freight-bans-on-hunted-trophies/ Posted by: Jen the original at August 05, 2015 06:07 PM (YP6Ap) 264
"What happened with the case of the cop that chased the guy and then shot him on camera?"
If you are talking about the North Charleston shooting, I am pretty sure that cop is toast. Posted by: Thor's feather duster at August 05, 2015 06:08 PM (JgC5a) 265

"body-cams will out liars and force citizens to not act like such complete jackasses."
In light of the steady drumbeat of claims the Planned Parenthood videos were "edited" and therefore fraudulent, even with the full videos available, I'm curious why Ace and all the other camera optimists don't think those claims won't be made about body-cam videos which are made with the same tech. Sure it would convince anyone rational, but SJWs, #Black Lives Matter, and the Left in general are NOT rational, and will be able to get riots going regardless.
