Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Jeb Bush's Camp Calls Donald Trump a "Godsend" For Sucking Away the Oxygen From Any Potential Jeb RivalVia Hot Air, Trump's popularity benefits Trump, but it's also great for Jeb! "The longer [Trumpapalooza] goes, the greater the panic is going to build," said Alex Castellanos, a longtime Republican strategist. "And that means you may not have the luxury to flirt with an undeveloped, budding candidate. Trump has set the Republican Party on fire, and if you’re going to put that fire out you don’t have time to waste. You're going to have to grab the biggest blanket you got and throw it, and right now that’s Jeb." ... [The lack of media oxygen for other candidates] mainly helps Mr. Bush, who can quietly continue to build his daunting advantages in money and organization while his would-be challengers struggle to break through. ... In Iowa, a crucial state for Mr. Walker, Mr. Trump is now statistically tied with him, according to an NBC Marist poll of potential Republican caucusgoers. ... Privately, Mr. Bush’s top strategists, who have become increasingly fixated on halting Mr. Walker, believe that Mr. Trump is nothing short of a godsend. That is because Mr. Trump is drawing support from voters -- blue-collar, less-educated, more conservative -- who are unlikely ever to support Mr. Bush but are essential to Mr. Walker’s candidacy. Hit the first link (the Hot Air link) to read about Trump saying he doesn't expect to throw any punches in Thursday's debate -- though he will punch back if hit. People have been hoping another candidate, a more respectable one, would grab hold of the populist lightning that Trump has ridden to the top of the polls. But none really are. I can't help but think this has something to do with it.A new oligarchic era of American politics came into full view on Friday, as super PACs disclosed fundraising details showing billionaires bankrolling the 2016 presidential race to an unprecedented degree. The unlimited-money super PACs account for one-third of all federal election funds raised in the first half of 2015 -- up from 4 percent at this time in the last presidential election. Three-quarters of all super PAC money came from more than 500 wealthy donors, corporations and unions in contributions above $100,000. More than half the money in the presidential race so far -- to super PACs and to campaigns -- came from donors who have given at least $100,000. For the first time in more than a century, the majority of funding for a presidential election is coming in six-figure or larger checks from corporations and the wealthiest Americans. The presidential campaigns, limited to a maximum of $5,400 from a single donor, raised a combined $128 million. Super PACs supporting those candidates pulled in $260 million, with $208 million from those giving $100,000 or more. Now, a political candidate needs votes, but even more importantly, I think, he needs money. I had hoped my friend Mike Flynn could make an impact in IL-18 with very little money (he raised $100,000, compared to LaHood's $850,000+), but he could not. To even keep the lights on in your campaign offices requires a lot of money. And voting comes later. Much later. For the next year, candidates need, more than anything else, money. You will not be around to try to grab up votes if you don't have the money to stay viable until balloting actually begins. And I think we all know how the Donor Class feels about amnesty, and the prospect of replacing broke-down old American workers with younger, hungrier foreign ones. So I'm thinking that all the candidates in the Money Primary have already made a series of commitments on amnesty precluding them from taking any kind of real position against it, beyond the standard litany of "border security first" (supposedly -- all those "Virtual Walls" they have tried selling us on for going on 10 years now). It's hard to see how anything can possibly change here, absent the transformative power of calamity. Scary and sad. Trump Now Has Biggest Lead Ever, Per Monmouth Poll: 26% support, 14 points ahead of Jeb! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

We tend to rally around the Koch Bros because they are attacked by the Left but all of these Presidential candidates are having to kiss that ring because they throw so much money into political races. (supposedly -- all those "Virtual Walls" they have tried selling us on for going on 10 years now).
I'm pretty sure 1986 was more than 10 years ago. I'm also pretty sure that the more Our Betters call the base insane, immature brats for supporting Trump, the more support Trump will get. I've been kicking this idea around the last few days and I think I shall take it for a spin. Massive tl;dr to follow. Our Betters are saying that the base is throwing a tantrum like spoiled brats by supporting Trump. Well, here's the thing. It is my understanding that when raising kids, it is a very bad idea indeed to promise the kids that if the kids do x then they will get reward y and then not give them that reward, absent serious external forces beyond the parent's control. So, to push the spoiled brat analogy, the base was promised by the Establishment in 2010 that if the base was good and got straight As and didn't get in trouble and cleaned its room, then the Establishment would take it to Disney. The base did so. Then the Establishment sat the base down and explained, sadly, that the Boss was mean and wasn't giving the Establishment its bonus so no Disney. The base was upset but understood, though with some mumbling and feet stamping. Then in 2012, the base was promised that if it was super good and got straight As and cleaned its room and was nice to old ladies, then Disney *and* ice cream. The base said okay and did its level best. The Establishment then had to admit that once again, no Disney and here, have these Brussels Sprouts. The base was really upset but maybe it wasn't perfect so okay fine whateverhands. Then 2014 came around. The base was told if it was quiet and good and got straight As and cleaned its room and pitched in its allowance to the Disney fund and was nice to old ladies and shoveled snow and raked leaves, then Disney and ice cream and a new puppy. The base did all of that. The Establishment then went to Sandals with the Disney fund and told the sitter the kids were paleo so no sugar at all and oh, hey, yeah, Grandma is allergic so no puppy ever. The base is now pitching a huge huge huge screaming toddler on the floor fit because the Establishment is lying to its fucking face and the base has had it. If a parent lies frequently enough, then all parental authority is permanently lost. I would say the base is well past that point. And the Establishment has only itself to blame. Analogy was great, except for the natural assumption that parents love their kids and have their best interests at heart in spite of (sometimes because of) the parental pain they need to occasionally inflict. The GOP neither loves nor needs us. They don't mean to cause the pain they inflict on us -- they are indifferent. They simply do not care. An extension to your illustration would be the parents looking dispassionately and thinking, amid the toddler meltdown, "Knock yourself out. grab hold of the populist lightning that Trump has ridden to the top of the polls. Maybe I missed it, but has any other GOP candidate made any kind of attempt to grab the immigration issue and run with it? BTW, why is it considered "populist" to favor securing our borders and stopping illegal immigration? I have never had a good understanding of the usage of that term. It seems to be used as kind of a more respectable phrase than "rabble-rousing", but both seem to suggest that the politician who is being described is catering to knuckle-draggers and the like. Another Bush. Are these the same GOP geniuses who ran the GOTV for Romney? Yes, Bush vs Clinton. Let's see how that works out for the GOP. Bush, who increased spending and entitlement spending every year he was Florida governor. Which is why he tells us we should be more "compassionate". You see, that's why he spent all that taxpayer money. Because he's a nice guy and you're just a bunch of Tea Party meanies. Oh and se habla espanol or something. 1) Rubio shamelessly lied to get elected 2) He got easily rolled by Shumer Actually, I'm not sure which of those things is worse. Posted by: physics geek at August 03, 2015 04:11 PM (MT22W) I have similar feelings, but I do think Rubio is a genuine conservative he just has a soft-headed view on this issue coming from immigrant parents. And honestly, I like the Trump show but I sure as hell don't trust him on this issue at all. Already he's backpeddaling and I would wager a good 50% of his employees are illegal. Face it, there are a huge number of people who identify as republicans or conservatives who are fine with just HURTING REPUBLICANS.
These people hate Obama and Hillary, but they really seethe with rage at how the GOP has treated them. The GOP's betrayal has been worse than Obama in many ways because these people always knew Obama would be a far left winger. They didn't expect Obama to push a conservative agenda, but when they see the GOP ACTIVELY PUSHING LIBERALISM, their anger turns into blind rage and they figure there is no point in supporting any of the "regular" repubs, so they turn to Trump, because, hey we might lose with with him but who cares, we would lose with Jeb anyway and even if Jeb wins, we still lose cuz he would push liberalism. At least with Trump, we can hurt the people, GOP LEADERS, who have hurt us! This is what is going on! We can whine about it all we want, but that is what is happening. Only the GOP leader repub country club fucks can change it, but they won't. They push liberalism and amnesty. Posted by: Duncan MacLeod, the Highlander at August 03, 2015 04:24 PM (COpZ4) 116

Lately I've been wondering if, in the case that it turns out to be Hillary vs. Jeb, that one would be best served by voting Hillary at the top of the ticket and R's the rest of the way down.
Should Jeb win, isn't it more likely that R's will not provide enough consequential opposition to those agenda items disliked by many conservatives (Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Climate Change, Common Core, etc.) to make a difference. In fact, the legislation may even be more leftish as Jeb triangulates to bring Dems on board. Whereas if Hillary wins by an absolute blowout margin through conservatives who see things similarly voting for Hillary or sitting it out and R's maintain a downticket superiority, wouldn't the likelihood of meaningful opposition be higher, not only for natural partisan reasons, but also because the message was delivered that there is a willingness to vote against interests in the status quo classic sense, that is, which throws every R into thinking more carefully about running leftward. It's making more sense to me every day, but I'm interested in learning what is wrong with this theory, above and beyond "Supreme Court" and the other old and flat arguments. Even if Jeb had not taken up the mantle of Open Borders, he's still completely unelectable purely because of his last name.
I saw a poll of Hispanic voters and their feelings towards the GOP candidates, and Jeb Bush actually had the highest negatives. The idea that because Jeb is married to a Latino is going to deliver that vote is an incredibly stupid analysis of voter behavior. To say nothing of how the base is going to react to a candidate embracing open border policies. So let's say Jeb gets the same amount of Latino support his brother did, something like 40% versus the 33% or so Romney got? Jeb Bush says he's lost 40 pounds in the past six months as he runs for the GOP presidential nomination. Bush, 62, said in a Sunday interview with CBS affiliate KCCI in Iowa Falls that he shed the weight through exercise and a paleo-style diet of meats and vegetables. Gov Christie could not be reached for comment, because he was hiding behind his lunch. Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at August 03, 2015 04:38 PM (kdS6q) 177

"Biden is effective in that he has no compunction whatsoever about lying his ass off."
Interesting phenomenon here. During Biden's previous runs for the presidency, the press were not at all reticent about airing his dirty laundry. Biden's shameless appropriation not only of Neil Kinnock's speeches but of Kinnock's life details, for example. The press didn't cover for Biden on that. They crucified him. But the instant Biden became the handpicked #2 man on the Barack Obama ticket, all negative press instantly stopped cold. Shielded by proxy using Black Democratium, world's most impenetrable political substance. Once Obama is gone, will his protective aura go with him? Will Biden again face the normal level of press scrutiny under which he wilted before? Posted by: torquewrench at August 03, 2015 04:40 PM (noWW6) 187

I question the Times' logic. If Trump's supporters would never vote for Jeb, then if Trump were not running, his votes would be split amongst several other Repubs, and Jeb might actually be leading. Is it really preferable to collect all those anti-Jeb votes for one candidate, putting him into the lead over Jeb?
I think the Times are just throwing random things at the wall trying to try to dissuade people from voting for Trump. Posted by: Hello Kitty at August 03, 2015 04:48 PM (E5UB0) 218
Caller on Bennett this morning was wondering if Trump is the most surprised of all by all of this, that it started as a joke. He then compared him to Obama as a showman who will say what the people want to hear without believing a word of it. That's what's most frightening of all about this. We abused Romney's conservative credentials for so many things done out of arguable political necessity in a blue state, but now a huge part of the right is taking Trump at face value that he is the truest, best voice to stand up to the dems? Unbelievable.
If this isn't all a big joke, or a deliberate distraction by the GOP, this is how the socialists (per Debbie Wasserman Schultz) take another 4 years from us. People who will not win a national election in 2016: Anyone with the last name Bush, Donald Trump, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, John McCain, Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachmann, Herman Cain, Gary Johnson, Allen West, Richard Nixon. Almost all are decent people, some would probably do a decent job, but none will be the president in '17, promise. Fairly or unfairly, they're radioactive (if anything) to the LIVs we need. We need LIVs, sorry, it's true, democracies are only as good as their voters. I'll hold my breath for Fred Thompson being elected on write-ins before any of that field. You know I think this is wishful thinking by the Bush camp. Three things can happen - if Trump goes the third party way Bush loses. By appealing to the base and angry silent majority - Trump is forcing the R establishment to take notice of the seething anger at their inaction among the base.
Bush had no reason to belittle conservatives, because they will not show up and he will lose. Now Bush can use the fixation with Trump to get the rust off, but he still does no0t have the street cred and scar tissue that Walker does, nor the soaring rhetoric of Rubio. He lacks the fortitude of Cruz nor achievements of Perry. No still way to early.... Posted by: standfast24 at August 03, 2015 04:48 PM (wx/BY) 220

Hillary fears bimbo eruptions and they will come. Just last week, for example, documents were finally released showing Jeffrey Epstein was confirmed to have had relations with at least 36 underage girls, and his lawyers worked closely with prosecutors in secret to limit the guilty plea to one charge. And, at Epstein's request for delays, prosecutors waited seven months after signing their plea deal with Epstein to tell other victims their cases would be ignored.
Bill traveled numerous times to Pedo Island with Epstein aboard his plane (supposedly designated "The Lolita Express"). It was there that Epstein liked to frolic with underage girls. http://dailym.ai/1P1m7OM Posted by: MTF at August 03, 2015 04:54 PM (TxJGV) 247

If amnesty is such a big concern for the people around here, there is not much to choose from anyway, is there? Everybody in the field - yes even Mr Trump - knows and has said on some occasion that amnesty will happen. They might differ on the details of border security, but the moment the next Democrat president is elected, the border will be "un-secured" anyway.
Its simply not a battle worth fighting. The best conservatives can hope for are delays and that just means to kick the can down another generation, because the children of our illegal immigrants will automatically be American citizens. If people were sensible and smart, they would let Republicans get ahead of an inevitable issue, so that they can court new voters. You cheer on Trump, then whine about the unintended consequences.
It might be better to think before reacting sometime. Just a thought. IL-18 was Bob Michel's district for nearly 40 years. Anyone who thought an unknown could wave a Tea Party banner and beat Ray LaHood's son (Ray was Michel's Chief of Staff and held the seat more than a decade himself) was just being willfully stupid. Posted by: Begonia at August 03, 2015 05:07 PM (vTXjm) Indicative of your level of political analysis (stunted by hatred of conservatives). 1. No republican has said anything like this sort of scare-mongering, regurgitated Leftist tripe. 2. The RINO pro-amnesty/democrat-lite package is a proven loser. How many presidential elections do you need to lose before this sinks in? 3. there is a huge swath of frustrated voters who are not bigots, support legal immigration but who deeply resent our lawless and insane immigration policies -- or non-policies. Some of these are even legal immigrants. Posted by: rrpjr at August 03, 2015 05:23 PM (s/yC1) 302

Ace,
Trump's popularity is predicated in large part on being Anti-Illegal Immigration. Yes, this is a flip-flop from some years ago. But it is a wholly believable change in position because Trump has spoken in harsh language against Illegal Immigration and then doubled down on those harsh statements. - That gets big traction and big support. As. It. Should. In years past I couldn't stand him. And while Trump is certainly right of center: there is no good reason to believe that he is a conservative. BUT IF NEITHER TED CRUZ NOR BOBBY JINDAL IS GOING TO BE THE NOMINEE: LET THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT EAT TRUMP. - I say we nominate Donald Trump IN PROTEST before we nominate some shifty moderate squish. If Trump won in the general election, at least we'd know he'd make it a serious priority to end illegal immigration. Also, the GOP would know that the conservative base is fucking serious when it comes to having a say in who the nominee is. And if Trump lost in the general election, the GOP would still know the conservative base is fucking serious when it comes to having a say in who the nominee is. Ace, if the GOP Establishment isn't going to give us a serious shot at nominating a genuine and consistent conservative: TO HELL WITH THEM - Make it Trump 2016. It can change without calamity. The Wesleys and Whitfield, and others turned a generation from cheap gin, by convincing individuals to change their hearts. When the parents teach the children not to lie or steal, when they are grown, they will live a moral life in business and government. It was without calamity, but it takes a miracle.
