The Latest #Outrage That We're All Gonna Be Lectured About For the Next Few Weeks

A 'hitchhiking robot' got beaten up and decapitated in Philadelphia and this means that America is a terrible place or something.

Only two weeks into an attempt to travel across the United States, the friendly hitchhiking robot's journey has ended in Philadelphia after being beaten to a pulp.

HitchBOT, who was created by a team of communication researchers from Ontario, was found damaged beyond repair early Saturday in the city of brotherly love.

"Sadly, sadly it's come to an end," Frauke Zeller, one of HitchBOT's co-creators told the Associated Press.

This was no robot - what it actually was was a bunch of junk glued on to a trash can and left by the side of the road along with a sign asking people to cart it around.

Sure it was a kinda sad end but either way HitchBOT was going to eventually end up in the dump.

So Biden is In in 2016

Because it's what his dying son wanted:

"Dad, I know you don't give a damn about money," Beau told him, dismissing the idea that his father would take some sort of cushy job after the vice presidency to cash in.

Beau was losing his nouns and the right side of his face was partially paralyzed. But he had a mission: He tried to make his father promise to run, arguing that the White House should not revert to the Clintons and that the country would be better off with Biden values.

Frankly I don't believe this story because Biden has a lifelong history of lying about things like this. But it is a signal that he is in fact joining the race. Because otherwise why would he tell a story where he ends up betraying Beau's dying wish.

Confirmed: Navy Seriously Considering Charges Against Lt. Cmdr Timothy White For Firing Back Against An Enemy Attack

Apparently the correct action would have been for him to die quietly and tragically like a hero instead of actually defending himself and the men under him.

And Nate Hale attempts to explain why the Navy brass would make such a fucktarded decision in Scapegoating 101:

And that brings us back to changing the narrative.  By suggesting that Lieutenant Commander White may be facing charges, senior government officials have successfully changed the focus of the Chattanooga investigation, at least temporarily.  That should make everyone wonder what new revelations are about to drop, in terms of the shooter's travels and affiliations, and security measures in place at the reserve center at the time of the attack.

As we learned in the days followed the shooting, the reserve base was a largely undefended target, putting sailors and Marines at risk.  Abdulazeez was able to crash through an unmanned gate at the facility and open fire.   To date, DoD has said nothing about why the gate was secured with nothing more than a chain and a padlock, and the response of base security personnel.  It was Lieutenant Commander White and that unidentified Marine returned who fire from inside the perimeter and it was the Chattanooga Police Department--in pursuit of the suspect--who finally cornered Abdulazeez and shot him dead.  Base security--based on what we have learned so far--was AWOL.

Keep an eye on the Navy's "prosecution" of Randy White in the weeks ahead.  It will provide a convenient distraction while far more serious revelations about the attack dribble out.  Sad to say, but it won't be the first time the feds have sought a scapegoat in a terrorist strike against the U.S. military.

Also when it comes to scapegoating consider the sad tale of USMC Lt. Col. Kate Germano who seems to have been forced out for having the temerity to believe that female Marines could perform as well male Marines. Because #SisterhoodIsPowerful.

Camille Paglia -- Frenemy of Conservatives

Republicans nominated the man Paglia wanted and she still didn't vote Republican? To hell with her. Conservatives should not give this lady the time of day.

She is a mole. She is gaming Republicans. She will never, ever vote Republican. That should entitle her to zero influence. Read her for the catty remarks, but never mistake her counsel for anything but encouragement to commit political hari-kari.

I know a lot of people really like her and find her insightful. I've always found her interesting but ultimately unserious when it comes to politics - and this is why her advice should be regarded as For Entertainment Only.

On the Argument That You're Not Really Pro-Life Unless You Support Higher Taxes

A fave of the Left as exemplified by this quote from Sister Joan Chittister:

"I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is."

And David French rebuts:

Hidden within this argument is the notion that a baby is better off dead than poor, but the Left has been backing off this claim ever since explicit arguments for eugenics fell out of favor. Moreover, the reliance on state-funded welfare as the cornerstone of compassion ignores not just the Christian community's enormous private generosity but also the economic reality that the free enterprise system has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic engine devised by the mind of man.

It's just pure slander to claim that pro-life activists don't want children fed, educated, or housed. But it's a mistake to treat this argument as if it's made in good faith. Want proof that it's nothing but a misdirection? Ask an abortion activist whether they'd agree to outlaw abortion at any level of taxation or welfare. Given that abortion radicals are happy to see women abort even to preserve a short-lived career as a professional volleyball player, it's clear that a community could reach a level of peak liberal compassion and they'd still zealously guard the right to kill with impunity. After all, the true concern isn't for child welfare but for transient notions of adult fulfillment, and no level of taxation will cure the selfishness of the human heart.

A-10s In Poland

The American A-10 ground attack aircraft recently reminded everyone that it can land pretty much anywhere. On July 20th, four A-10s practiced landing at a Cold War era airfield in Poland that that has been decommissioned since 2000. The cracked and crumbling runway was in bad shape from lack of maintenance. The last Polish units stationed there mainly used helicopters and conditions at the former Warsaw Pact airfield were always substandard for fixed wing aircraft. Not a problem for the A-10, which is nearly immune to FOD (Foreign Object Damage), usually caused by trash or debris being sucked into the engine air intakes during takeoffs and landings, thanks to its engines and their air intakes being mounted above the fuselage, far from the surface of the runway.

By having A-10s land and take off for night operations in such austere conditions, the United States is showing its NATO allies that it can deploy aircraft anywhere, even in the middle of nowhere, on a long forgotten ruin of a former Warsaw Pact airfield. The A-10s involved are part of the squadron (twelve A-10s) in Poland as a part of the European Theater Security Package, which is supporting Operation Atlantic Resolve, and are stationed in the Lask Air Base.

Seattle CEO Who Set Company's Minimum Wage to $70K/Yr Now on Hard Times

A cautionary tale about economics.

The Seattle CEO who reaped a publicity bonanza when he boosted the salaries of his employees to a minimum of $70,000 a year says he has fallen on hard times.

Dan Price, 31, tells the New York Times that things have gotten so bad he's been forced to rent out his house.

Only three months ago Price was generating headlines-and accusations of being a socialist -- when he announced the new salary minimum for all 120 employees at his Gravity Payments credit card processing firm. Price said he was doing it, and slashing his $1 million pay package to pay for it, to address the wealth gap.

...The Times article said Price's decision ended up costing him a few customers and two of his "most valued" employees, who quit after newer employees ended up with bigger salary hikes than older ones.

"He gave raises to people who have the least skills and are the least equipped to do the job, and the ones who were taking on the most didn't get much of a bump," Gravity financial manager Maisey McMaster, 26, told the paper.

She said when she talked to Price about it, he treated her as if she was being selfish and only thinking about herself.

The true minimum wage is $0/yr and paying people who aren't actually worth $70K that much is an insult to those who are.

10 Behind-the-Scenes Secrets of Flight Attendants

1. IF THE PLANE DOOR IS OPEN, WE'RE NOT GETTING PAID.

You know all that preflight time where we're cramming bags into overhead bins? None of that shows up in our paychecks. Flight attendants get paid for "flight hours only." Translation: The clock doesn't start until the craft pushes away from the gate. Flight delays, cancellations, and layovers affect us just as much as they do passengers-maybe even more.

Airlines aren't completely heartless, though. From the time we sign in at the airport until the plane slides back into the gate at our home base, we get an expense allowance of $1.50 an hour. It's not much, but it helps pay the rent.

Thanks, though to be honest, I'm not sure I want it. Basically, they're going to have to pay me more than they're likely willing to shell out to get me to move; the pay scale is more a result of sequestration and the new contracting rules than a reflection on L-M. Also, it's a contingent upon award position; I've already dropped resumes on two of their competitors for the same position.

Exactly. Ignore their threats. Ignore their letters. Ignore their calls. Direct everything to your lawyer. Do not cooperate, do not play along. Ignore them, let your lawyer deal with it, continue to go to class. If they sic the campus security on you, call your lawyer and let him deal with them, but do not cooperate.

Posted by: EC at August 02, 2015 11:43 PM (j8YpL)

As most people know, there is no overlap with the previous season. Unlike American Horror Story, none of the actors come back to play new characters either.

Really, there is no one to root for, no good guys, nothing remotely likely to happen in the finale to make the thing worth the effort. It is terrible, terrible television. Last season ended up being a bit of a disappointment. This one was bad from the beginning, and never got better.

Yeah, lots of travel. I hate flying now. Pain in the ass sitting in those seats because I'm tall and I'm never comfortable. It'll be a while before my manager lets me fly first class I think.

Anyhow, one good thing to come out of all my traveling is that the wife wanted to come with me to the fun show this past weekend to pick something out for her. Some lady down the street called the cops because she saw someone in her back yard at two in the morning. Seeing as how all the older boys have moved out and it's just her and my 13 yo at home, see has come to an understanding that this world is not as friendly and nice as she once thought it was and is preparing herself accordingly.

She got a S&W 637. Damn proud of her for picking it out herself.

246 paglia was denouncing fashionable contemporary art. she cited the volcanic ending to star wars III (not the whole movie) as a great visual accomplishment, comparing it to 19th century academic narrative painting vs the vapid, airless abstraction of most neo dada art that is in critical favor today.

paglia has always been anti=elitist and for popular culture. it was one of the things that brought her intellectual notoriety.

It's reverse racism, plain and simple. They know that child will have a better life and they can't stand the thought of it.

Heh. It's not a "snap election". We have fixed election dates now. It has been known a long time that Oct. 19th would be the day. What can vary is the length of the campaign. So Harper dissolved Parliament earlier, for a longer campaign, which favors the Conservatives, because their donors are more forthcoming with the loot.

And the Left is confused, because there are three parties on the Left, the Liberals, the NDP, and the Greens. Confusion comes easy to them.

I'm not really in a position to do that. E&O insurance would put me right out of the market, and without it, one misstep would take me out for good. Tort is such that they can take everything you own and all future earnings. It's a huge risk.

The other part is that my husband is gainfully employed as an architect, which means that when the economy tanks, as it does here in AK, were we both employed as architects we would be screwed.

Kids are nearly ALWAYS the right idea. And they all need both mom and dad, one way or another.

BTW, when my son's kindergarten peers made a sneer about him being adopted, his response was that he had TWO MOMS, how many do YOU have?

Kids are kids, yours mine and ours.

413 Paglia is one of several academics who seem to constantly prod academia or the media to be more right-wing, but when it comes to actual elections, always wind up voting Democrat or (in Paglia's case) Green Party (others that come to mind are Steven Pinker, Michael Shermer, and William Saletan). No idea why this is, but I have a few speculations:

1.) Don't wanna lose all their clout with the left or be ghettoized as a wrong-thinker
2.) While they think academia is too left-wing, they don't feel the same way about the country as a whole
3.) They find the left-wing worldview/political correctness silly, but still like the policy prescriptions of the left
4.) Kinda ties in with 1, but plain, old tribal identity that Ace is always talking about
5.) Sympathetic to leftist ideas, but put off by partisan hackery in general
6.) They just plain relish being contrarian

424 404 tcn, why did you become an architect? what attracted you to that profession?
Posted by: chemjeff at August 03, 2015 01:15 AM (2XMpf)

Young and stupid, I guess.

Architecture is both artistic and logical. It isn't art, per se, because it must be useful first, but it has that potential as well.

Most of architecture is not the glam stuff of magazine covers. Most of it is where is the toilet and how do we keep the water out. Solving those issues is sometimes an art all by itself. If you can't appreciate the practical part, you won't make it very far, but if you don't appreciate the art part, you won't like it very much, either.

I have never been God's gift to design--I'm more of a production type, but I've gotten to do some very cool stuff with the Corps of Engineers and then solve some tricky problems in WI. But here in the great white north, odds are not that good for this profession, and certainly not at my age, so... time for a change.

My aunt went to college when she was in her 60's because she wanted to become an art teacher. Retooling seems like a good idea, and I think that medical stuff will always be in need, pretty much anywhere.

But then, we shall see. I spent that last five years teaching religious ed, so I'm probably game for just about anything.

The paperwork is not the important part. Do the shit that makes that kid your son. A father is about teaching and protecting. Not paperwork. Now for your marriage to work the paperwork may be important so talk to the chick so that part works.

Big was 8 when I met Gingy. I adopted him 10 years ago. It's the right thing to do. You're getting a package deal, never forget that. Just accept it as a given and move on.

Also, it may not be that easy-you have to notify the father and if he says "no", for whatever reason, it doesn't happen.

Still, if you're serious about marriage to your gal, that's a part of it. If you don't feel that way....you may not be as serious about Gal as you think you are.

I just want to switch from 3-tab to architectural shingles and my crazy idea was to keep the color on the front half the same as it is now and go with a lighter energy-star color on the back half that gets the afternoon sun and which nobody sees since my house is on the edge of the community. The HOA didn't like the idea of two colors on the roof, but failed to address going with architectural shingles or doing the entire roof in the lighter color and I don't feel like resubmitting the request and waiting another seven weeks for a response.

Your credit cards and bank account should be getting nervous reading your words ...

I'm on my HOA Board of Directors. We are ... occasionally ... forced to force a homeowner who made an un approved architectural change to change it back.

I don't like doing this; I think none of us do ... but to allow such counter-revolutionary behavior is to allow others to push the envelope ... eventually resulting in structural damage, which "we" must repair at our cost ... fortunately "we" and "our" means the Association, not us Directors, as we handle these things as soon as they come up.

Condos and HOAs are socialist entities.

I think most people interested in leading an HOA are going to be petty little tyrannical shits that believe they know the best way to run the neighborhood and love making the neighbors do whatever stupid shit they demand.

Well, I think it might depend upon whether the home in question is a condo, i.e. part of a multiple dwelling unit, or a stand-alone house in an HOA community. If the former, the HOA is probably on firm ground to demand conformable shingles, just for esthetic reasons. If it's a detached house, their case is a lot weaker, and perhaps you could call in the city or state environment department, or whatever agency is concerned with "energy efficiency" and all the Gerbil Worming shit. Get the senior level of government on your side against the local petty tyrants.

Easier sometimes to ask forgiveness than to get permission.

HOA's are fascist. They give little people the chance to be little dictators.

Hire somebody to come in and put a nice standing seam metal roof over all of it. They can do this in one day and be gone before anyone can raise a stink. Then tell the HOA to bit you. Not in a nice way.

I probably just stirred the pot instead of solving any problems, but that would be my take on the whole situation.

Actually, most of us do it because it's the only way we can have a family. It isn't any more heroic than birthing one up, and it's just about the same amount of work, all told. The only difference that I've found is that adoptive parents are given more grief up front, for no good reason other than because some soft-headed liberals think they can give it. It's probably not much different than the fascist lactation consultants or other "well meaning" but pointy headed "experts" whose job is to make new moms feel completely inadequate. I have a very strong feeling there is an unimaginably brutal storm coming and I'd find some shelter. I hope I'm wrong

477 Hey everybody. Late tonight but that's the way it goes.

Oh boy. This transcription stuff I do... some of these attorneys I think are in need of a vacation, perhaps complete with a straight jacket. Actual letter I did today:

"I am writing in regard to the Smith matter wherein applicant's attorney agreed six months ago to settle for $15,000.00 but AME Dr. Jones said apportionment was 120% to SuperDuper Corporation and there are over 25 cents in liens. On your authority I agreed to file a petition to move to trial on the issue of whether your kitty cat likes jam or your kitty cat likes jelly and your daughter is pretty and applicant requires a complete lumpectomy of his head and genitals. Please advise as to whether I can get authority to move to Alpha Centauri and change my name to Caitlyn. As always, your continued professionalism and courtesy is always Reese's Peanut Butter Cups."

But what about the Machines for Sale and the Lace Wigs?

Posted by: tcn in AK at August 03, 2015 02:25 AM (+YMhA)

479 Tcn, they'll be resolved at the status conference in 2039.

(Workers compensation has its own language and universe, seriously.)

Wow -- So you're doing transcripts of Justice Kennedy's thinking.

I'd recognize his logic anywhere.

483 Night all.

Here is "Four Horsemen" by Aphrodite's Chile:

Can anyone guess, without searching online, who the Oscar winning member of this band is?

484 Look's like Adult Swim's "Toonami" block will be showing "Akame ga Kill!", which ranks rather high on the "Blakes 7" scale...

487 Dammit.

Motherfucking Powerpoint shit for this class.

Fuck.

Posted by: SMFH at it all at August 03, 2015 04:19 AM (zyIlW)

488 I wish I could convey my hatred for Powerpoint.

I deserve at least a MSM for being subjected to almost being killed by PowerPoint.

Huh.

Planned Parenthood.

PowerPoint.

Two PPs that do their utmost in destroying souls.

489 Seeing that China picture is making me rethink my pro-birth position. I bet an A-10 could land there!

490 I know A-10s rock,
If Lt Com White gets charged for doing what the gov doesn't it could be a very dark day.

491 If you look up this "nun" she is basically just a feminist pretending to be Catholic.

And the problem with this is?

Posted by: Fr 'Flatulence' Pfleger at August 03, 2015 04:58 AM (HEtQ3)

492 So Steve Jobs could have been born poor. So terminating his life would have been fine to this 'nun'?

Better dead then being born, adopted, and becoming one of the wealthiest people on the planet?

493 It is a shitty thing that LCDR White is getting charged. But, it will be even shittier if it goes to court martial and the jury of officers convict him. Or shittier if they offer him a plea deal that fucks him over career/post mil career wise as a choice to court martial.

Posted by: fastfreefall at August 03, 2015 05:22 AM (WXjQW)

494 According to the Navy, he's not getting charged.

495 That's great news.

Posted by: fastfreefall at August 03, 2015 05:44 AM (WXjQW)

496 Call me cynical but the navy spokesman left plenty of wiggleroom for actions later. Hopefully they dont fuck this officer over with a letter of reprimand or a shitty fitrep which will end his career.

Posted by: fastfreefall at August 03, 2015 05:53 AM (WXjQW)

497 That poor little droid in Philadelphia. I certainly can sympathize - I know what it's like to be blown into bits! No doubt he was also raped by organics. I know what that's like, too. Filthy, smelly droid-raping Jawas.

And restraining bolts? Rape.

498 And Jabba's idea of a lube oil bath was not my idea of one. Here I am, the ability to speak six million languages and I was regularly sodomized by a giant, giggling criminal slug while Artoo served drinks! Where's the justice?
