When you've lost Norman Lear, is there anything left to say?
For the youngsters out there, Lear was a hard-core leftist during the culture wars of the 70s and 80s, and founded an organization called "People For The American Way," which was a typical (but unfortunately successful) leftist organization that pretended to educate and inform, but was, in reality, a front for the progressive movement of the 1980s.Everybody knows me to be a progressive or a liberal or lefty or whatever. I think of myself as a bleeding-heart conservative. You will not f-- with my Bill of Rights, my Constitution, my guarantees of political justice for all. But does my heart bleed for those who need help and aren't getting the justice that the country promises them and the equal opportunity the country promises? Yes. I'm a bleeding heart, but I think myself to be a total social conservative. The people who are running just don't seem to have America on their minds, not the America I think about. When I was a kid we were in love with America. As early as I can remember, there was a civics class in my public school. And I was in love with those things that guaranteed freedom before I learned that there were people who hated me because I was Jewish. I had a Bill of Rights and a Constitution, those words out of the Declaration that protected me. And I knew about that because we had civics in class. We don't have that much in the country anymore. So before World War II or shortly after, we were in love with America because we understood what it was about and that's what we were in love with. I believe everybody's patriotic today. Everybody loves America. But I don't need their flag plans to prove it. I'd like to go back to civics lessons.Sure, it's a bit incoherent, and his roots in 1930s socialism are showing....but so is his love of America.

You know, very little of Lear's comedy is funny. All in the Family is really hard to watch. Not for all the "relevant" subject matter but because it's so overwrought and the only funny moments are when great comedic actors decide to overact to make up for the weak scripts.

I see this a lot. Progressivism by definition is change and unless one is completely untethered from reality the old progressive finds it difficult to pull up mental stakes and keep moving with the ideology.
I was at a 4th of July BBQ with a family that was three generations of Democrats. Each generation regarded the others as completely foreign; they had little in common with each other.
The arc of progressivism in their family went from equality to socialism to trigger warnings and microaggressions. The older ones were much more comfortable discussing things with me, the comfortable old conservative.

A welcome sentiment from Mr. Lear, and I don't doubt his sincerity. A brief aside about good satire: You have to have some affection for the thing you're satirizing. Both Archie Bunker and George Jefferson were sympathetic characters, because Lear got that. Hell, even Trudeau got that, back in the '70s. He lost it somewhere early in the Reagan era.
To get back on topic, though, Lear is expressing the sort of "left patriotism" that used to be more in evidence. The whole Frankfurt school was created because these "intellectuals" were trying to reconcile the fact that Marx's predictions didn't come true. The revolution wasn't in industrial Germany, England or the US, it was in peasant Russia.
In my view, they ended up transitioning communism into fascism, incorporating nationalism and rejecting all the idealism of the worker's paradise.

It's too late , but I take Lear at his word and I remember seeing an interview 20 years ago where he was emphatic that the character Archie Bunker was "not a hateful person." Lear described Bunker as "fearful." Maybe it's because O'Connor was such a great actor, but Archie's decency came through time after time. He was a more popular character--then and now--than his ditzy daughter and her useless bum of a husband, Even the annoying spin-off Maude's title-character was often portrayed as a loud, obnoxious and self-righteous hypocrite.
I think there was a time when "liberals" did love America. They were playing with the future of America though, and some got caught up in the social upheaval and went over to the dark side. I don't think Lear is one of them.

Some people who do have trouble distinguishing between the lighter fruit wood flavors (apple, pear, pecan) and lighter woods in general (maple).
Grab some mesquite wood - it's highly flavored and highly distinct flavor wise.
Hickory is also heavy flavored and distinct.
Cherry wood is surprisingly kind of like a lighter hickory.
BBQ'd some yummy brisket last night with cherry wood.

Yep. All except for the Penske guys since they had another deal, but they will be under the tent soon enough.
I saw an interesting interview with Rusty Wallace years ago talking about the startup of the souvenir business. The short of it was that Dale Earnhardt came up to him and Jeff Gordon asking for about $10K each from them to start the company, they gave him the money. He said he tried to forget about it for a long time because it was a lot of money, and he really couldn't afford it at the time. He said that at the banquet he asked Sr. about it when they were in the elevator, and Sr. laughed, reached into his tux pocket and pulled out an envelope with a check in it. When Rusty got back to the hotel room after the banquet, he opened the envelope hoping the check was for the $10K, it wasn't, it was for $500K. That's how much money they made on t-shirt sales for a little over 1/2 a season.
NASCAR set this new souvenir program so that they can control everything at the track area, and make sure that there won't be anyone selling anything unauthorized.

I saw an interesting interview with Rusty Wallace years ago talking about the startup of the souvenir business. The short of it was that Dale Earnhardt came up to him and Jeff Gordon asking for about $10K each from them to start the company, they gave him the money. He said he tried to forget about it for a long time because it was a lot of money, and he really couldn't afford it at the time. He said that at the banquet he asked Sr. about it when they were in the elevator, and Sr. laughed, reached into his tux pocket and pulled out an envelope with a check in it. When Rusty got back to the hotel room after the banquet, he opened the envelope hoping the check was for the $10K, it wasn't, it was for $500K. That's how much money they made on t-shirt sales for a little over 1/2 a season.
NASCAR set this new souvenir program so that they can control everything at the track area, and make sure that there won't be anyone selling anything unauthorized.

Grab some mesquite wood - it's highly flavored and highly distinct flavor wise.

Mesquite is the most difficult to use because it is one of the strongest smoke woods. It's just too easy to fuck up a mesquite smoke.

Also the score to Heaven's Gate, lousy movie, great score. The story concerns the Johnson County War in which rich ranchers tried to drive recent immigrant bohunks off the range. The score is a minor masterpiece off the less is more school melding American folk music and eastern European themes.

"Return to Me" was Carroll O'Connor's last acting role and he did a great job. Although corny and totally unhip, it is one of my favorite rom-coms. Some leftie tropes, but also lots of funny, warm scenes and hilarious but respectful takes on older people and Catholic families. Worth watching if you've not seen it.

Already noted by several that although the Bunkers were supposed to be WASP (Episcopalians, even) Archie's affect was completely working-class Irish Catholic -- not a huge stretch for an Irish Catholic actor. Similarly, the character Mike "Meathead" Stivic was supposed to be Polish, but he didn't much act like any Poles I've known. His affect was much more Jewish -- and of course he was played by Rob Reiner.
