Norman Lear: Patriot [CBD]

When you've lost Norman Lear, is there anything left to say?

For the youngsters out there, Lear was a hard-core leftist during the culture wars of the 70s and 80s, and founded an organization called "People For The American Way," which was a typical (but unfortunately successful) leftist organization that pretended to educate and inform, but was, in reality, a front for the progressive movement of the 1980s.

Everybody knows me to be a progressive or a liberal or lefty or whatever. I think of myself as a bleeding-heart conservative. You will not f-- with my Bill of Rights, my Constitution, my guarantees of political justice for all. But does my heart bleed for those who need help and aren't getting the justice that the country promises them and the equal opportunity the country promises? Yes. I'm a bleeding heart, but I think myself to be a total social conservative. The people who are running just don't seem to have America on their minds, not the America I think about. When I was a kid we were in love with America. As early as I can remember, there was a civics class in my public school. And I was in love with those things that guaranteed freedom before I learned that there were people who hated me because I was Jewish. I had a Bill of Rights and a Constitution, those words out of the Declaration that protected me. And I knew about that because we had civics in class. We don't have that much in the country anymore. So before World War II or shortly after, we were in love with America because we understood what it was about and that's what we were in love with. I believe everybody's patriotic today. Everybody loves America. But I don't need their flag plans to prove it. I'd like to go back to civics lessons.

Sure, it's a bit incoherent, and his roots in 1930s socialism are showing....but so is his love of America.

3 I disagree with Lear in that I don't think everybody is patriotic and loves America, but the rest is spot on.

I wonder how many death threats old Norman will get?

4 Bizarre.

It's almost as if those old lefties didn't "get" what they were doing.

Almost.

Frankly, I think they're all full of shit and that they're well read on the Frankfurt School ideas on how to bring their vaunted socialist revolution to America.

5 You know, very little of Lear's comedy is funny. All in the Family is really hard to watch. Not for all the "relevant" subject matter but because it's so overwrought and the only funny moments are when great comedic actors decide to overact to make up for the weak scripts.

By the way, Lear got his start writing for the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis radio show.

8 I see this a lot. Progressivism by definition is change and unless one is completely untethered from reality the old progressive finds it difficult to pull up mental stakes and keep moving with the ideology.

I was at a 4th of July BBQ with a family that was three generations of Democrats. Each generation regarded the others as completely foreign; they had little in common with each other.

The arc of progressivism in their family went from equality to socialism to trigger warnings and microaggressions. The older ones were much more comfortable discussing things with me, the comfortable old conservative.

13 A welcome sentiment from Mr. Lear, and I don't doubt his sincerity. A brief aside about good satire: You have to have some affection for the thing you're satirizing. Both Archie Bunker and George Jefferson were sympathetic characters, because Lear got that. Hell, even Trudeau got that, back in the '70s. He lost it somewhere early in the Reagan era.

To get back on topic, though, Lear is expressing the sort of "left patriotism" that used to be more in evidence. Another example is the comics creator Howard Chaykin, whose early '80s series American Flagg! had the exact same incoherent yet sincere love of America and its founding principles, however misinterpreted through a left filter.

Chaykin summed it up at the time in one sentence: "If you want to make a statement, don't burn the flag -- wash it!"

15 This "confession" is too little, too late.

It sounds a lot like Steve Allen or Al Capp, i.e. traditional liberals who were hopelessly naive about hardcore leftists taking advantage of the liberal emphasis on "tolerance" as the chief virtue and using it to get into the house and shit all over the furniture.

Posted by: Phil at August 02, 2015 12:13 PM (DjpfO)

The "progressive" name comes from the eponymous movement in the late 1800s / early 1900s where this strange obsession with "Science!" and "progress!" began.

It was in response to Darwin, Freud, etc. and the idea was that with the Right People in Charge, human evolution could be steered to create a more perfect man.

These ideas were VERY prevalent and openly spoken on the left until Hitler gave the whole idea a bad name.

Now they don't mention it much, but that's still the impetus behind most of the shit "progressives" believe -- from "cleaning the gene pool" via abortion to trying to cut people out of "polite society" by putting certain speech "off limits" to even the name "progressive".

Posted by: mynewhandle at August 02, 2015 12:18 PM (AkOaV)

20
I'll take him at his word (I guess) that people can come to see the light of bad policies and silly political correctness. Age sometimes brings wisdom. And incontinence.

I am pretty sure the linked writer meant to say "flag pins".

But civics being taught by the fellow leftists that he helped march thru the institutions have disdain for what Lear is saying about the BoR and the Constitution. He should know that. Civics today would be taught as "white man bad" and nothing else.

Posted by: Guy Mohawk at August 02, 2015 12:18 PM (ODxAs)

21 Well Norman, sure you invented the Lear Jet, but what about all the schlock TV that you created, huh?

Frankly, who cares? Norman's an old man, about to shuffle off this mortal coil, and he had a whole lifetime to do something positive about all this, and yet.....here we are.

With our without "All in the Family", "Archie's Place" and the rest, the culture would still be a sewer. In the end, Norman should realize just how irrelevant anything he did or said really was.

Whether it's "All in the Family", "Laugh-In" , "Dancing with the Stars" or "Game of Thrones", there's just a ton of schlock on TV, and always has been.

"I Love Lucy" was the seminal Sit-com, and most everything since can find its roots in that show. Yet watching the re-runs is sometimes just unbearably uncomfortable (my sister-in-law watches this and "The Andy Griffith Show" religiously), because it is all so childish and trite. Ricky Ricardo must at some point get fed up with that nitwit Lucy.

So yeah, Norman. People hate America now (their own country), and what of it? Hint: It wasn't the lack of civics class that did this.

Exit question: Norman, who did you vote for in 2008 and 2012? No cheating and looking ahead at future history, now.

Mr. Weirddave, first of all, I am glad that you are well. We still don't understand what happened to you disappearing post last Saturday.

Does anyone anymore understand what the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, or the Bill of Rights mean?

The historical context is gone; this country in no way is like it was 200+ years ago. It isn't even like it was when I was a kid in 1965.

As Bevel Lemelisk said above, the real goal of the Left was to destroy white people (as a cultural entity) and destroy Christianity. White people will still be around in the future, they just will be too embarrassed by "history" to assert anything from the last 600 years of Western Civilization.

The importance of what the Left is doing is to destroy. Through the annihilation of history, perspective, traditional culture, they will gain the power to impose an instantaneous belief on anyone, anywhere, for any purpose (kinda sounds like the stupid version of the Crell from '''Forbidden Planet").
Twitter is the best example of this.

1. Planned parenthood made money by selling tissue from aborted fetuses.
2. Some dentist shot a lion in Zimbabwe.

Which got more newsplay and attention?

Nowadays, that kind of philosophy is kind of lost to the public. It's not on open display. I dont think that was true back then. I think everyone who was at all in to politics at the time was aware of the ideas coming out of the Frankfurt School. It wasn't some secret society that nobody knew about, it was a leading intellectual organization associated with a leading intellectual college in America.

And yes, you're right, they were perplexed that Marx's theory of political evolution seemed to not be playing out how they envisioned. Remember, Marx though societies went from (truncated version here) feudal agricultural types, monarchical, capitalist (his word), socialist, then the workers utopia of communism.

Russia seemed to skip a step or two there, and all of the countries that the Communists thought were right on the edge of "evolution" and "progression" didn't seem to be progressing the correct way.

Thus, their plans to drive the "evolution" by focusing on cultural instead of economic issues.

66 Both Archie Bunker and George Jefferson were sympathetic characters, because Lear got that.

Not really. Bunker and Jefferson were sympathetic characters because O'Connor was a brilliant actor and Hemsley's decency came through his character.

Lear intended Bunker to be a buffoon and it was by accident that he became the sympathetic character. It's not so much that satire needs sympathetic characters but that any kind of serialized entertainment needs sympathetic characters.

Another thing to note is that in both of those series they had the racist being the responsible adult. Bunker was supporting his daughter and lazy son-in-law. Jefferson was an entrepreneur who made it big. (And you'll note that he was also portrayed as an honest businessman because...serialized.

In both cases, the liberal point of view was adolescent and without responsibility. You can look at his other shows and the ones that were successful broke away from the Lear Preach Machine.

I've spent some time in Britain.

First, I regard London as an international city, so if you go into central London, it feels very cosmopolitan the way that Times Square does. Everybody from everywhere. The spooky thing is when you go near the "Asian" neighborhoods. That is, Pakistani. It's not cosmopolitan and, other than the modern buildings, not British at all. The hajibs are out and are everywhere.

No Stepford Wife-like satires of Muslim women, are there?

The rest of England is, well, depressing. You have pubs but that's about it. My friend from Birmingham, England remarks on how many restaurant options there are in my thriving metropolis. Ames, Iowa. The Iowa State University football stadium (Jack Trice) has a bigger jumbotron than anywhere in Britain outside of Wembley. ISU is nothing special and if there's any sport that needs a jumbotron for instant replays, it's soccer.

Could be me, but yeah, don't get it. Just incoherent. Of course there's more to the interview. But I would not bother to read the rest - why do so? Lear and his PAW were a loathsome destructive arrogant operation relentlessly pushing stupid ideas.

Oh, and "political justice"? Again, probably just incoherent ramblings of a guy on the downslope. But that, slip-up or whatever, ranks right up there with "social justice" as a phrase denoting nothing more than infantile moral narcissism weaponized with authoritarian impulses (and yes, this is exactly what it is no matter who burbles it - including guys in black shirts with white collars)

124 I'm glad you shared this. I recall this sort of sentiment among liberals when I grew up. Hubert Humphrey often spoke like this. There was a simple and shared understanding that America was unique and that while we may have been divided over interpretations of our founding documents and the social compact, there was general agreement in the primacy of freedom and our Constitution. The Left has ravaged this good faith, this collective notion of America. How and why did we cede to the Left the power to do this? This is the story of our time -- a story of negligence, cowardice, greed, historical illiteracy, expedience, all the political vices of the ages.

127 It's too late , but I take Lear at his word and I remember seeing an interview 20 years ago where he was emphatic that the character Archie Bunker was "not a hateful person." Lear described Bunker as "fearful." Maybe it's because O'Connor was such a great actor, but Archie's decency came through time after time. He was a more popular character--then and now--than his ditzy daughter and her useless bum of a husband, Even the annoying spin-off Maude's title-character was often portrayed as a loud, obnoxious and self-righteous hypocrite.
I think there was a time when "liberals" did love America. They were playing with the future of America though, and some got caught up in the social upheaval and went over to the dark side. I don't think Lear is one of them.

McGovern failed, but it began the fundamental restructuring of the Democrat Party.

People like Clinton and Joe Lieberman formed the DLC, which was supposed to be a more centrist Democrat organization, but that died when Clinton got elected (it served it's purpose of maskirova to get Clinton elected).

183 At such a hearing on Friday, Sullivan -- a Bill Clinton appointee -- told State to seek certifications from Hillary Clinton, Abedin and former Deputy Secretary of State Cheryl Mills that they've produced all records related to Abedin's employment, even if they kept those records outside official State Department systems.

"As related to Judicial Watch's FOIA requests in this case, the Government is HEREBY ORDERED to: (1) identify any and all servers, accounts, hard drives, or other devices currently in the possession or control of the State Department or otherwise that may contain responsive information; (2) request that the above named individuals confirm, under penalty of perjury, that they have produced all responsive information that was or is in their possession as a result of their employment at the State Department," Sullivan wrote in an order issued Friday afternoon. "If all such information has not yet been produced, the Government shall request the above named individuals produce the information forthwith; and (3) request that the above named individuals describe, under penalty of perjury, the extent to which Ms. Abedin and Ms. Mills used Mrs. Clinton's email server to conduct official government business."

It appeared the judge did not directly order Clinton, Mills or Abedin to make the certifications because they are not officially parties to the lawsuit, which names the State Department as the sole defendant.

So, now having helped tear down the fabric of society and replacing it with a Frankensteinian patchwork of progtard causes and thought,

Choices of manufacturers would be:

Fiat/Dodge
Obama Motors/Chevrolet
Ford

Dodge pulled out because none of the top teams wanted to be involved with them anymore.

Chevrolet got the US government to steal Americans' money to fund its racing program.

Ford uses its own money, but because it can't get anything from Uncle Sugar, it's now running mid pack.

NASCAR's problem now is that all of their popular drivers have retired over the past 10-15 years and haven't been replaced.

Terry Labonte
Bobby Labonte
Dale Jarrett
Rusty Wallace
Sterling Marlin
Mark Martin
Ricky Rudd
Dale Earnhardt, Sr
Ward Burton
Jeff Burton
Bill Elliot
Kyle Petty
Michael Waltrip
Ken Schrader
Johnny Benson
Steve Park
Kenny Wallace
Jimmy Spencer

Plus you had the iconic cars:

Wood Bro's #21
Havoline #28
STP #43
Coors #40
Kodak #4
Tide car
the #9 car

When we would go to NASCAR races, those souvenir trucks would all be packed, and a bunch of those fans didn't care who was driving the car, they loved the car/sponsor.

When Fox started broadcasting back in 2001, they would interview almost every driver, from the top guys to the back markers. If they had an accident, they got a short interview with them so that you knew they were okay and got their perspective. Now? If you aren't in the top 5 or Danica, you get zero coverage.

Yes. There was a lot of confusion there.
Classical Marxism glorified the working man and the farmer, but neo-Marxism rejects them as hardhats and rednecks. They became reactionary counter-revolutionaries to the New Left.

So Lear paints his conservative as a "low class," anti-intellectual hardhat, the kind that our new rulers despise. Yet, being raised on old leftism, he still sees the Bad People as being WASPy, GOP plutocrats. Very mixed up.

I always found it weird that in the intro song they have Archie wishing for "a man like Herbert Hoover again." This is ridiculous. Bunker would have been a card-carrying FDR Democrat....(and later a "Reagan Democrat.")
It was also bizarre that the Bunkers were in one episode identified as being Episcopalian.

Drivers and owners being pissed at the track owners/NASCAR is as old as the sport.

Curtis Turner was banned from NASCAR for trying to unionize the drivers.

Richard Petty took up drag racing for a season because of Big Bill.

Do you smoke, as in cigarettes?

Some people who do have trouble distinguishing between the lighter fruit wood flavors (apple, pear, pecan) and lighter woods in general (maple).

Grab some mesquite wood - it's highly flavored and highly distinct flavor wise.

Hickory is also heavy flavored and distinct.

Cherry wood is surprisingly kind of like a lighter hickory.

BBQ'd some yummy brisket last night with cherry wood.

Yep. All except for the Penske guys since they had another deal, but they will be under the tent soon enough.

I saw an interesting interview with Rusty Wallace years ago talking about the startup of the souvenir business. The short of it was that Dale Earnhardt came up to him and Jeff Gordon asking for about $10K each from them to start the company, they gave him the money. He said he tried to forget about it for a long time because it was a lot of money, and he really couldn't afford it at the time. He said that at the banquet he asked Sr. about it when they were in the elevator, and Sr. laughed, reached into his tux pocket and pulled out an envelope with a check in it. When Rusty got back to the hotel room after the banquet, he opened the envelope hoping the check was for the $10K, it wasn't, it was for $500K. That's how much money they made on t-shirt sales for a little over 1/2 a season.

NASCAR set this new souvenir program so that they can control everything at the track area, and make sure that there won't be anyone selling anything unauthorized.

In my humble and inexperienced opinion:

Fruit wood is the best because it covers the greatest range of grilled items even the more challenging items like cheese, veggies, and fish.

Mesquite is the most difficult to use because it is one of the strongest smoke woods. It's just too easy to fuck up a mesquite smoke.

345 Thanks for that, LDC. I have to check that out.

But first, a quick response to Mountain Turtle:
Thank you. I am humbled.
Really, I'm just a man. One simple knuckledragger that finally realized that I'm supporting the massacre by NOT speaking out and taking action.
I can no longer sit by and pretend what is happening is not happening, y'know ? And I'm not alone. I know it.

My latest thought is to take the CMP videos, burn them to DVD by the thousands, and pass them out everywhere. A simple walk through the neighborhood like church groups do on the weekends, knock on doors, go to the mall, the bingo hall, the poorer areas of town, wherever.

Let people that will never see this shit know that it's happening.
Maybe, we can eventually teach them about Margaret Sanger. Who knows?

Again, I know that I am not the only man in America that saw the videos & decided that I am complicit by my willful refusal to acknowledge the ugly truth...
no longer.

But, thanks Turtle.

What I hated about Norman Lear shows was that it was this rigid, never ending Progressive morality play.

The format of all the shows seemed to follow the same rigid pattern, which got very old, very fast.

1.) Some male would assert some non PC value.

2.) Family members would argue for twenty minutes flinging verbal feces at each other

3.) The male troglodyte would finally get his comeuppance in a two minute monologue by some person of a higher moral authority (a feminist, a child, or some minority) who clarifies the error of his ways.

4.) The live audience would applaud these mindless platitudes. In essence they were congratulating themselves for being politically correct and thinking that they had achieved some higher level of understanding.
