A Baseball Thread: Midway through Already? Pt. 2 [BCochran]

Two weekends? Two baseball posts? In a row?

Inconceivable.

And yet here we are.

We're back again this week to look at our leaders in the American League. Now remember, this is written a couple days before it's posted, so some of the numbers may have changed by now.

American League

Batting Average
1) Miguel Cabrera .350
2) Jason Kipnis .332
3) Prince Fielder .330

No shock at all to see Miggy and Fielder at the top. Kipnis has never hit above .284 for a season, so it'll be interesting to see if this is his break out season. A point against him, sorry AtC, he plays for Cleveland.

RBIs
1) Kendrys Morales 70
2) Chris Davis 69
3) Josh Donaldson 69

These guys are known names if you're a big time baseball fan. Otherwise, maybe not so much. Morales came up with the Angels and has been a fairly solid, but never above average player. This pace would net him his highest RBI total of his career.

Home Runs
1) Mike Trout 31
2) Albert Pujols 30
3) JD Martinez 27

Yeah, Trout and Pujols have combined for 61 home runs. All for the Angels. That's....well that's a helluva lot of production for one team.

Wins
1) Felix Hernandez 12
2) Dallas Keuchel 12
3) Collin McHugh 12

King Felix. Anyone shocked by that? What is shocking is that both Keuchel and McHugh both pitch for the same team. Even more shocking....it's the HOUSTON ASTROS. The Astros were the basement of the National League...they move to the American League and all of the sudden they're studs. Not saying..just saying.

Innings Pitched
1) Corey Kluber 157.0
2) Dallas Keuchel 151.0
3) Jeff Samardzija 148.1

Kluber defines workhorse. His numbers should be better than they are, but, well...Indians. Keuchel makes his second appearance in this post and is certainly someone to keep an eye on. Folks may remember Samardzija as a standout WR for Notre Dame not that many years ago.

ERA
1) Scott Kazmir 2.10
2) Sonny Gray 2.16
3) Dallas Keuchel 2.32

Kazmir came to notoriety with the Rays, but has bounced all over since then. Notice two things, once again we have two Houston Astros pitchers in the top three and, of course, Dall Keuchel. Top three in the league in Wins, Innings Pitched and ERA. Unless he collapses, I'm guessing someone is due a pay raise. Hell, at this point, he may be the front runner for AL Cy Young.

Alright, that's all the stats I've got for you this week. Stats are fun. Baseball, above all other sports, has embraced the insanity of stats. But that isn't what the game is about. It's supposed to be about fun. About the smell of the grass, the crack of the bat, the feeling of the seams on the ball and the snap of ball meeting leather. Go...find a game. Major league, your local minor league, it doesn't matter. Go sit in the sun and enjoy watching the boys of summer.

23 The Astros started rebuilding a few years ago, and got a lot of good draft choices, when they were the doormat of the NL Central.

Their GM is a young guy, and one of the smartest GM's in the business. They have only surprised because they got better a year earlier than some expected.

And the Cubs may become the dominant team in the NL Central for the next few years, as all their great young players mature.

The Cardinals may be in first place and have the best record, but they are almost dead men walking. A lot of their key players are old, and they are not scoring many runs. Holliday is hurt again. Their starting and relief pitching are carrying them. They have a huge number of innings from their bullpen, and it all may collapse in the next month.

With the Yankees, who's hurt? Texeira is back, Brett Gardner, A-Rod,McCann are all playing. Yeah, Sabathia is hurt, but actually most of the team is healthy.

I really don't know how The Yankees are doing it, but they have great relief pitchers, a healthy Tex, Gardner and Ellsbury (when he's healthy) and A-Rod...what can you say? He's a cheater and a dick, but he's been a model citizen this year. And people forget that he's one of the most talented to ever play the game. Like Barry Bonds, he didn't need to cheat.

60 This had to be one of the craziest Trade Deadline Weeks ever, even though or maybe because it ended so quietly on Friday

The Tulo to Toronto trade came out of nowhere, nobody saw that one coming. The Blue Jays were leading MLB by a wide margin in runs scored, and that margin will likely grow. They also picked up David Price as the ace to keep those other teams from equaling and surpassing the Jays output which has happened so often this year.

The other crazy thing was The Trade That Didn't Happen. While the Mets and Brewers were negotiating a trade that would have sent Zach Wheeler and Wilmer Flores to Milwaukee for Carlos Gomez, it got leaked out by someone, most likely Gomez' agent Scott Boras that the trade was done. It went all over social media and the MSM, and Flores was informed not by Terry Collins in the dugout that he'd been traded, but by fans in the stands looking at Twitter on their phones.

Flores has been with the Mets organization since he was 16, and tears came to his eyes when he went back out onto the field, and on sportscasts all over the country they saw the human side of baseball of a player overcome by emotion, wondering why Terry Collins hadn't pulled him from the game.

At the postgame press conference, Collins was furious that GM Sandy Alderson hadn't informed him of the trade so that Flores wouldn't have been seen by the whole country wiping tears from his eyes with his jersey.

Then when Alderson came to the table to speak, he dropped a bombshell that the reason Collins hadn't been informed of the trade was because there WAS NO TRADE. Nor would there be one as the trade was called off by the Mets. There are conflicting versions of why the trade was rescinded, Alderson claiming that Gomez' medical records showed a hip problem that was a concern, but Scott Boras and Brewers GM Doug Melvin claiming that Gomez' hip was fine and the Mets backed out after the Brewers refused a request by the Mets to kick in some of Gomez' salary.

All this made some of the sportswriters look like idiots for reporting a trade that had never been confirmed by either team, and leaking it out over social media.

At any rate, the site of Wilmer Flores crying on the field made him a folk hero to Mets fans, and the story goes Hollywood from there....

On Friday night's game, Flores made a diving stop to prevent a hit, getting him a standing O from the crowd. Then he drove in the first run of the game for the Mets to tie it up, another standing O. Then, with the game in extra innings in the bottom of the 12th, Flores drove a fastball over the plate into the left field stands to win it. The crowd and the team went bonkers, it was straight out of Hollywood; the player who thought he wouldn't be there hitting the dramatic walk off home run

66 Is there some way for a team to lodge a complaint about an incompetent umpire, even if it's after the game? The clown behind the plate at the Mets/Nats game has a strike zone about as consistent as a lava lamp. His demonstrably bad calls have already cost the Nats at least one run. Even the radio announcers are incredulous and they are usually more reserved about umpires.

82 There's overlap, but Westchester County, The Bronx, Manhattan , southern CT and most of Northern NJ are Yankees territory. The Mets have Queens, Brooklyn, LI, most of Staten Island and parts of central Jersey close to the coast.

Since they were in the same division as Cincinnati, they played each other and got hit the most. So the Reds started to throw at Pittsburgh players, especially after a Pirates pitcher broke Brandon Phillip's wrist.
Finally, after McCutcheon got hit one afternoon, they went to Hurdle and asked him to stop throwing at opposing batters.
Well, last night a Pittsburgh reliever threw hard fastball up and in on Marlon Byrd, and hit him in the left shoulder, and just missed hitting him in the head.

So this afternoon, Pedro Villareal (Red's reliever), threw a back up slider that got behind McCutcheon, and grazed his back (not really looking like he threw at him, as Villareal was pretty upset afterwards). Next inning,Tony Watson hit Phillips with a pretty good fastball.
Benches clear, etc., a couple of players are ejected, and the game goes on.

In the bottom of the ninth, Melancon (Pirates closer) unintentionally hits the Red's catcher (at the plate), and the pitcher and Hurdle are automatically ejected.

So now, they appear they are going to start throwing at each other again.
