Overnight Open Thread (1 Aug 2015)

Crime levels rise to highest level in 43 years in Baltimore. It's not just Baltimore either.

The number of murders in 2015 jumped by 33% or more in Baltimore, New Orleans and St. Louis. Meanwhile, in Chicago, the nation's third-largest city, the homicide toll climbed 19% and the number of shooting incidents increased by 21% during the first half of the year.

Yup. You can tell when a city is managed by democrats.

Navy Officer To Be Charged?

If this report is true that LCDR Timothy White is to be charged for shooting at Chattanooga terrorist, it wouldn't surprise me. The optics of this sucks but it is what it is. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Just sucks that active duty folks are put into these situations.

Armadillo Armor

Texas man shoots at armadillo, wounded by ricochet.

Second time in three months that an armadillo has gotten some payback on a target-shooting human.

A Georgia man wounded his 74-year-old mother-in-law in April after his 9mm bullet careened off an armadillo, hit a fence, went through the back door of mom's mobile home and penetrated the recliner she was sitting in. The bullet struck her in the back.

Leading From Behind

U.S. decides to retaliate against China for cyber attack. Now? Now you say this? I hope this is just a public statement and that we have been doing a lot more behind classified doors. This part cracked me up.

Concerns among officials that retaliation could escalate the conflict between the two countries mean that thus far, the exact nature of the U.S. response has not been finalized, the paper reported.

We're beyond worrying about escalation. They're getting away with shit and not paying any penalty for it.

Media Coverage

This won't come as a surprise to any of you morons. Here's how much the three major networks have covered Cecil the lion vs the Planned Parenthood videos.

Cat Genetics

Splotchy cats show why it is better to be female.

The female genetic advantage is obvious in the case of X-linked diseases, which are caused by a mutation on the X chromosome. Since males have only one X chromosome, if they have a mutation there, they have only that one mutated copy. With no good version to fall back upon, they get very sick or die. But women almost always have another copy of the gene that is normal and can compensate. With this backup system, they stay relatively healthy, or sometimes have no symptoms at all. Migeon puts it this way: A female is a composite of two intermingled cell populations that share gene products with one another. The result is an organism that is inherently more resilient.

They're not turtles, weft! Yes, they can run at a pretty good clip--and they also jump straight up in the air when startled, which might make it a bit hard to aim (and also explains why they get hit by cars so often... they jump straight into the bumper's strike zone).

The shows tight-lipped production will not reveal any details about McShanes character. Sources say McShane has a relatively small amount of screen-time during the season, yet his character is of key importance.

123 Eastbound out of Houston on I-10 before you get to Baytown, it's six lanes of heavy traffic. I was in an eighteen wheeler with the foot throttle flat on the floor when I saw a large tortoise on the right shoulder.

It looked like Mr. Tortoise was getting ready to sprint across all six lanes of high speed traffic and my thought was jam on the brakes and help Mr. Tortoise with his quest lest he be smushed by traffic. My next thought was the bad publicity that would result from a panic stop and the one hundred car pile up that would follow.

But as I passed Mr. Tortoise I utilized the mystical powers of Zen Buddhism and reached out to him.

"What are you doing?" I asked.
He replied that it was his karma from a past life that compelled him to attempt to cross the freeway, and he hoped that in a few more reincarnations he would come back as an armadillo because they have better foot speed.

"They just can't run in a straight line," he said wistfully.

I tried to convince Mr. Tortoise to work his way to one of the turtle crossings that the State of Texas had thoughtfully provided in that area, crossings that run underneath the freeway. I'm not sure if he heard me. It may have already been too late.

Now his top employees left in a huff b/c the new-hires are making as much as they did after working *years*, clients are bailing because he just fucked business plan, and his brother is suing for his share that's now being spent on the employees.

I think maybe if he, you know, held a few meetings about it with his brother and a few other affected parties, this could have gone a lot better. But noooooo, he wanted the "look at me, aren't I awesome?"

179 46 it's not a "black" problem; there is no link between being black and being a criminal...but there is a damn high level of crime committed by blacks that grow up in democong held enclaves.

...where democong control the schools, police departments, city councils, etc etc
...where democong control "news" distribution (read race propaganda)
...where democong policy subverts the education of blacks, and subverts business opportunities for blacks, and subverts the family support structure for blacks --ebonics, minimum wage, welfare, etc etc

if you want to pretend that the filthy traitors of the democong dont have anything to do with the cultural conditions that many black Americans grow up under...
if you want to pretend that the democong dont need a 90% pull of the black vote to win elections (even with their voter fraud and intimidation procedures)...

then go ahead. reality begs to differ

the democong still run plantations, but instead of raising tobacco and cotton, they raise voters, and instead of using whips and chains they use lies and welfare checks

Posted by: Anna Puma at August 01, 2015 11:12 PM (CpRK

Only seen the first two episodes of that series.

Favorite new shows are: GATE wherein a gate connects a fantasy D&D type of world with modern Japan... seeing attack helicopters shoot down dragons is fun; Gakkou Gurashi! which is cute high school girls doing cute high school girls during a zombie apocalypse (with one of the girls having already snapped and imagining long dead schoolmates as if everything is normal); and Everyday Life with Monster Girls wherein a poor sap is the sexual target of a lamia girl, a harpy girl, a centaur girl, a mermaid, a spider girl, and a slime girl...

Good returning shows: Teekyuu, which is what happens when you inject crystal meth into your eyeball; Working!!! about part-timers as a family restaurant, Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai about a world where immorality is strictly snuffed out and the only hero is a high school girl who hides her identity with a mask that is just a pair of panites, and Non Non Biyori Repeat which is one of the better "healing" animes...

242 Anna-Puma, a question about the F-15, and what we're facing with a weakened AF in the next decade or three.

If I recall, there was a "Stealth Eagle" variant, pitched as a lower cost alternative to the F-22. Conformal tanks, serpentine jet intakes, vectored thrust and a few other low-observable features.

Given the age of our current combat fighter fleets, I'll ask you the "OK, you're Queen, an absolute dictator for the next eight years" question.

Would you order things like the Stealth Eagle to quickly replenish the squadrons? New F-16 variants for those roles?

New F/A 18 versions for the fleet? With what mods?

I think those three are our primary "engagement" type combat aircraft these days, anyway.

The F-22 is new, of course....just not nearly enough of them, I think.

What would be on your 8 year menu for our aviation assets?

Just reading about those Reagan Era F-15s..... yeah, that's worrisome.

276 A few of the people who actually have read the random rambles I've been known to insert on the ONT may recall that I had to replace the power door lock actuator in the driver's door of my Honda. It turned out to be an insanely painful process that took weeks with a road-trip sandwiched into the middle of it.

Well, now the rear passenger's-side actuator has gone bad. Every time I used the power door locks to lock, it made this horrible grinding-gears noise. So, with the mad skillz I picked up fixing the driver's door actuator, I took apart the door and looked inside. What I saw shocked me so much that I searched-up a how-to video on youtube -- which confirmed the disturbing truth.

You nearly have to take EVERY DETACHABLE PART out of the rear door to swap out the power lock actuator. [I could swear the guy making the youtube video said, "oh, fuck...." a bunch of times and edited it out.] So I just unplugged it and will leave it locked.

but i noticed someone (y-not?) mentioned obama's resemblance to thulsa doom in the last scene of conan.

thing is, obama is a loy like thulsa doom and i don't see how it's not a point made very often.

obama has the cult.

obama does the thulsa stare to intimidate.

his circular symbol is like thulsa's snake circle.

obama's ring (that people have speculated is islamic) is actually a ring with snakes.

there are other creepy comparisons.

Posted by: AshevilleRobert at August 02, 2015 12:33 AM (zhwkH)

361 Jim, eight years in the current climate? Probably impossible to accomplish much considering how much manufacturing capability has atrophied in the US.

I am not sure if the Silent Eagle that South Korea rejected will really be that much of a game changer. Luckily Boeing is still building F-15s so can get more if the funds are appropriated. Add in the AESA radar, other electronic upgrades, and design in a 16,000 hour airframe life from the Strike Eagle and be back in business with a proven air superiority fighter with air to ground capability.

The last F-16 for the USAF was 01-7053 which was delivered to the 55th FS, the same unit that just had an F-16CM fatally collide with a Cessna 150. http://www.f-16.net/f-16-news-article4971.html

But luckily Lock-Mart is still churning out F-16s. Eight were just delivered to Egypt along with the order filled for Iraq. So like the F-15 it is possible to get new F-16s.

New A-10s are impossible. But the USAF just went through a re-manufacture that replaced the lower wing skins, did other structural fixes, and wired the A-10 to handle smart munitions. But right now at AMARC there are A-10Cs in storage even as A-10As are being scrapped.

Naval aviation, it would be interesting to see if anything could clear the Pentagon in 8 years to replace the Rhinos. All the A and C models are at their lifetime limit. So for better or worse, the Navy is wedded to the naval version of the F-35 even as the Marines' F-35B struggles. I have seen one report that the gun will not be cleared for the CAS mission until 2017.

And the US just lost the India MMRCA bid to France. Instead of 126 airplanes that could have been F-18 Super Hornets or F-16 Fighting Falcons, India is buying 36 Rafales.

For the most part, yes. There is a bit more leakage of gasses between the cylinder and barrel which won't be muffled. You'll still need to use a subsonic round.

393 Only common revolver that be effectively silenced, is the Nagant M1895 Gas Seal revolver.

They cylinder moves forward to close the barrel-cylinder gap, via cam action upon cocking the hammer.

Plus, that barrel-cylinder gap, as well as the cartridge itself, are designed into the "seal" system.

Hence, a barrel-end suppressor will work.

Otherwise, the conventional barrel-cylinder gap on a revolver will all but negate any sound suppression offered by a "silencer".

Still, a 6" bbl. K-17, firing CB caps, is pretty damn quiet, sans suppressor.

Contact kill, to be sure.... but effective within those parameters.

402 Reading the preliminary report from the NTSB on the F-16C/Cessna 150 collision, it seems a loss of Situational Awareness might be a main contributing factor.

Since the part of the engine inlet was found at the Cessna crash site and the cockpit are of the private plane was all but obliterated, a good guess on point of impact can be inferred. Now it has to be determined if the Viper pilot descended into the Cessna. Or something else.

Possibly on a Nagant revolver or on one of the Pieper designs where the cylinder is pushed forward so the mouth of the chamber mates with the barrel when the hammer is cocked in preparation to firing.

Otherwise the cylinder gap allows too much escape of gas and the bang for a silencer to work

415 Anna Puma..... thanks. That's pretty much what I was aiming at....with '15s and '16s still being made, we could ramp up those lines and get back to strength, ONLY IF we kept the procurement "wouldn't it be nice if......" crowd, out of the process.

Sad to know we can't field any new '18s. Same for A-10s.

That being said, I'd like to see a WWII grade, wartime emergency procurement done for new A-10s.

I'm all for modernization and upgrades, but not at the expense of actual airframes on the ramps. Stand up a dozen squadrons of what we can do RIGHT NOW, and then we'll talk F-15 Z or whatever.

Of course, I miss seeing A-6 and S-3 Vikings on the decks, too. I think those were far superior to the F/A 18 attempts to do the same jobs with the '18s limitations.

Excess economizing in the .mil will always, every time, with no exceptions, ever.....cost us in the long run.

429 Jim, I forgot to add as things were running way long. Boeing is still producing Super Hornets for the US Navy and Marines. Australia just received the first of 12 EA-18G Growlers. But its going to be interesting how India's cancellation of a 126 plane order will impact F-18 production, that was a very sweet deal that just went to France.

But it is time to end the Plastic Bug's production run. Each time they improve it, it results in a new airplane in all respects except planform.

There would have been an improved A-6 on the decks today except Clinton, Peace Dividend, and the F-18. The A-6F would have shared engines with the C model Hornet and the computer architecture of the F-14D while still being able to haul 28 500lb bombs. But the F-18 Super Hornet needed more money, so the A-6F and later A-6G was sacrificed. When that proved not enough money, the F-14D program was cancelled which scuttled the F-14 AST project.

About the only interesting thing coming into the inventory is the B61-12 50Kt smart nuke... would that be called a snuke?

The scene has all kinds of action.

Mindfulness intended to save a child's life, because, back then, in 1999 films by Marty Scorsese, that's what you did. Back then, that's what Marty thought audiences would pay for.

One hour into "Bringing Out The Dead" by Marty Scorsese there is a scene where everyone rushes to save a baby born into very harsh conditions, and prematurely. Very interesting scene from a 1999 release.

The amount of words needed to justify the exact opposite response with accord to the PP videos is where the weakness lies.

In Colorado Planned Parenthood wrote the letters "PROUD" in their windows after the truth broke free (temporarily).

445 Evening morons, how fares the horde?

Two thoughts on my day:

1) do not be on the Ohio State Fair grounds after sunset unless you are packing. Roving packs of Obama's hypothetical son doppelgängers were involved in at least 3 fights that I personally witnessed. One of them probably had some MMA training, because he lined up in a good stance and dropped the guy he was facing with one good cross. I thought it might come to me telling the family to run and me doing as much damage as possible before being overrun.

2) niece took it to Defcon-1 today. She's been skipping her mess and is also PMSing and does not understand to stop doubling down with your mouth when you're losing. Fortunately Mrs. Crank and I had sufficient restraint to not slap her mouth off her face or otherwise beat her. Ugh. She's being exiled to her grandmother's temporarily.

447 Ricardo, yes should have ordered those things just a bit differently. A draw down was planned during Bush 41 but Desert Storm slowed things down. BuAir was breaking the procurement rules and regulations for the Super Hornet back then. Which is why the A-6 and F-14 developments were sacrificed because the Super Hornet will do both missions they promised.

Super Hornet has marginally greater range than a C model. Another big win was carryback capability, something no one worried about before. Bad enough to carry back to the carrier a bomb hung up, but to deliberately carry live munitions back? Roll rate and acceleration of a Super Hornet is inferior to the C model. A C and an E share no common structural components, they don't even use the same engine.

448 So here's some funny shit.

I've talked a bit about my trials and tribulations with Big. Well, it turns out that he probably has some kind of executive disorder-simple decisions that you or I would make w/o thinking can lock him up. Good news is that there are meds that can help this and we're working through them.

Anyway, even while we're working on that, I'm determined that if he's not going to be working then he's going to have to live the life he's chosen. Hey, it's his choice and since he's suddenly a big Bernie Sanders fan, posting crap from occupy democrats and all, why, far be it from evil capitalist me to subsidize his life and keep him from his socialist paradise. To that end we went to help him sign up for food stamps (that's the kind of thing he can have difficulty doing, see disorder, executive). We helped him fill out the forms, a gal from social services called me with some questions (because I was listed as a contact) and told us "We should be hearing from them w/i 2 weeks". This was about 2 weeks ago.

So today, a bright, shiny new EBT card arrives in the mail.

With my name on it.

Wait, there's another envelope just like it. In that one is a bright, shiny new EBT card...with Gingy's name on it.

I call Big and ask him, he hasn't gotten squat.

So it looks like I'm now on welfare.

Pink may be due to a bad connection between monitor cable and video card 15 pin D-connector. Disconnect and check to see that all male pins are straight on the monitor connector. If you use a dual output pigtail on your video card, there may be bent pins at the video card end. Have had pins drill new pathways on the dual video card D-plug. Messes up both male and female connectors. If you are using HDMI, ignore this. This usually happens after disconnect/reconnect of cabling due to move or replacement. Let me know if you need more. 460 Even with the F-110 engines in the B and D Tomcats, the change from the TF-30 was eye watering. More dry thrust so no Zone 5 AB on launch. Better fuel consumption which combined with the onboard 16.100lbs of fuel gave the Tomcats better range and time on station. And most importantly no more fear of compressor stalls or fan blades shattering and ripping through the fuselage.

The Bomcats with LANTIRN talking with the F-14 systems and the big radar screen for the RIO that gave better resolution, meant the Bombcats could literally plink a smart bomb through a window. Combined with the long loiter conferred by the F-110 engines and ability to carry conformally on the center line smart bombs, Bombcats became favorites in Afghanistan for air support.

*pauses* Initial bomb tests carried out in the F-14A development days. There was one story about bomb separation test. The practice bomb released off one of the center line tunnel stations, but it ended up trapped under there by airflow so it continued to fly formation with the Tomcat. The pilot managed to escape the bomb and they fixed that little issue.

488 Elisabeth: Thanks, King Arthur is supposed to be good.

I don't bake much anymore, I also don't keep sweets around. These days I often don't eat much at all with my metabolism being slow and not getting around much. I've had like 700 calories today, maybe. Some days I eat more like a normal person, when my heart is doing better... it's unpredictable.

I try not to keep sweets around because it's just so easy to eat them, even when I'm not really hungry. On the other hand, when I have no appetite I do get a little bit, so I will eat *something*.

489 *pulls from shelf Tomcat: The F-14 Story by Paul T. Gilchrist, Rear Admiral USN Ret*

From page 188 Chapter 34 - The Little Fighter That Can't

Internal memo from OP-05 written by the F/A-18 Program Coordinator in 1992. Price of a C/D Hornet at 48/year was $50 million versus $70 million for an E/F at 48/year was the estimated cost in the memo.

"Individually range, payload, and bring back are not worth the money. ... The only rebuttal for the statement, 'the price of the E/F is not worth the 50nm increase in range,' is, 'That's correct. But the range increase coupled with the payload and bring back capability is worth the price."

So this guy in 92 was arguing the only way to sell the Super Hornet was to add up all these small improvements to make it look much better. There is also the fallacy that the Navy would ever buy 48 Hornets or Super Hornets in one year, more planes lowers average cost because expenses are amortized over more planes. Since that time, the procurement rate has been far lower so price per plane has been more.

Rear Admiral Gilchrist was OP-05 in 1982-84 working on bringing the F/A-18 Hornet to the fleet for the light attack community. Also did three combat deployments to Vietnam and flew 167 combat missions. Qualified on the F-4, F-5, F-8, F-14, F/A-18, YF-17, F-15, F-16, F-104, F-105, F-106, and F-20.

499 I would have to rummage around but I don't seem to recall the Navy being that concerned over bringing back nukes.

Of course when you are flying a nuclear armed A-1 Skyraider, returning alive is probably furthest thing from the pilot's mind. Pretty much a one way mission because the world has gone insane and times are desperate.

The nuclear armed jet powered FJ-4B Fury or the A-3 Skywarrior might survive the attack run.

But again if the Navy is carrying out its part of the nuclear war plans, this might be the first live atomic weapon ever seen by the pilot. All other times they have carried practice bombs.

526 Hey, folks, I'm a fishing widow this weekend. DH took off with his office mates to the wild Deshka to sneak up on some salmon, sans wife. Says he's only got one so far, which ain't really worth the trip, but it may have been more since they only have spotty cell coverage. Then again, it could just be a drunken river fest and they forgot to put the lines in the water.

Next year I will be a legal resident at last (born and raised here, but, rules are rules) and I will go dipnettin' to fill the freezer. This year, I can hope for a nice silver or two and maybe a couple of nice reds to smoke.

527 Dictionary.reference,com. Gives as a definition of polititian "N.2 A seeker or holder of public office, who is more concerned about winning favor or retaining power than about maintaining principles."

Aug 10 National Review "The Week" has this to say about Donald Trump to defend John McCain from Trump's criticismsms concerning protecting the border:

"But since Trump has never held office, and since he has a record of contradictory pronouncements, there is no telling what he would actually do on this , or any other, issue."

It sounds like we can be sure that McCain can be expecd to do on this issue: what a politician would do.

536 Chemjeff, I ended up passing on a Scion TC because I thought it was too much, ended up spending that much anyway on repairs and other expenses related to a crappy car disguised as a reliable car.

Try negotiating. Also, my general rule is to never buy a used car from a dealer unless you know damned well why it's there, and its history - every time I break that rule it's a nightmare.

My only excuse is I was in a huge hurry when it happened. One of many things I'd do over again.
