The time for this fight is now.

This is literally the hill to die on.

And we can thank an "unserious" billionaire for this national conversation being had now.

This is another one of those issues, such as illegal immigration, that the GOP have consistently distanced themselves from even discussing, much less denouncing.

Don't be surprised if you see an outside opportunist like Donald Trump proceed to pick that issue up and club them over their empty heads with it.

In my anecdotal experience, even here in deeply liberal coastal Commiefornia, that practice invigorates voters with considerable outrage. And the fact that the GOP haven't seized on it themselves is proof that they're a dying party.

Note that Carly Fiorina, when she ran for Senate here on the Republican ticket, got beaten like a rented mule carrying a red-headed stepchild with a gong.

A big big big big part of that was down to brutal Democratic attacks about her having approved laying off citizen workers at Hewlett-Packard and replacing them with cheaper imported H-1B labor. This stuff works. Think it might be worth emulating for attacks in the other direction?

Good, it needs to happen.

There is a place for H1-B workers. I've worked with several whose work-ethic and abilities I respect. But this massive importation of cheap labor - while good for business - is a net negative for the economy.

Yes, if I were laid off and replaced with an H1-B worker, I could find work elsewhere. If every tech job suddenly disappeared, I could go learn to work construction, or be a mechanic, or any number of other things.

I would not be providing nearly the same value to the economy at large as I am today, and the H1-B would be providing considerably less than I do as well.

I would argue that technology provided the overwhelming share of useful intelligence during the Cold War years. To have tried to focus on human intelligence instead would have been catastrophic.

The American intelligence agencies are no good at HUMINT and they never were. Not once, ever. Useless bunglers. America's modern human intelligence system was copied from the British version, because, hey, smooth sophisticated accents, these Limey toffs _must_ be good at what they do.

In reality, British HUMINT also always was a pile of crap.

And particularly in the years after Iron Feliks was running the Soviet intelligence apparatus, British HUMINT ended up pervasively penetrated and exploited from top to bottom by the Reds. A sad tradition of failure which the Brits promptly communicated to we Yanks, their dumb but studious pupils.
