US Dentist Sought by Zimbabwean Police in Connection With Shooting of Beloved (Protected) Lion
The lion, named Cecil, lived in a protected state park.
The dentist, for his part, says he paid local guides to find a lion for him, and relied upon them to know where they were, and what laws applied, and what lion they had actually found. It's a mess.Cecil, who was 13, was a prized lion in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, where visitors reportedly sighted him frequently. A video of the animal, regal, indifferent and sleepy-eyed, has been widely disseminated. He was a participant in a study that Oxford University in Britain was conducting, and he had been outfitted with a GPS collar. A police official in Zimbabwe said that two Zimbabweans had been arrested in the case and that police were looking for Palmer.The Zimbabwean guides were arrested but have been freed on bail. I'm sure this will shock you -- the dentist is now being hunted by internet vigilantes, despite the fact that we don't know yet if his claims of innocent intent are true or not.
Two signs posted on the door of a nondescript dental office here asked passers-by to mourn the death of Cecil, a lion who was lured off his sanctuary and killed during a game hunt this month in Zimbabwe. "WE ARE CECIL," one read; "#CatLivesMatter," read another. Nearby was a sign with a darker message for the dentist who said he killed the cat: "ROT IN HELL." In the hours since Dr. Walter J. Palmer apologized for killing the lion, he has gone from a dentist and longtime hunting enthusiast to a villain at the center of a firestorm over the ethics of big-game trophy hunting. ... The outrage and attention surrounding the lion’s death online caused Dr. Palmer to keep his office closed on Wednesday as he joined an ever-expanding group of people who have become targets of Internet vigilantism, facing a seemingly endless shaming until the next issue comes along.Frequently outraged hysteric Mia Farrow of course had to tweet the man's home address, an action that even Salon has criticized. But I suspect that he didn't have enough knowledge to bait the lion and lure him out of the preserve.
As racist as Mugabe is, big game hunting is big money and they would have every incentive to punish the guides and give the dentist a slap on the wrist.

Animal rights activists are perfectly ok with animals killing and eating each other in large quantities. They'd never change that or interfere with that. Safaris to see the lions and elephants finance African Wildlife restoration. Without the outside money, the locals would be happy to get rid of these jumbo sized pests. You do know that a lot of this was covered before when someone else went and killed a lion. Of course that was a woman that did it. So oops, you can't go all "Small dick" about her. And the lions that are chosen are dangers to people or a tribes livelihood, so the lion is going to be killed anyway. And the meat gets donated to local tribes.
Now in this case, someone or all of them broke the laws so those that are most responsible need to be held accountable.

Second favorite revolver I bought from a former Top Gun instructor/pilot who had very expensive (left-handed) custom big-game rifles for his Africa hunts. They need to carpet-bomb the deer in my county (Howard County, MD. Totaled two cars in 14 months. See deer carcasses all over the road shoulders, (and in the middle of the street). In the 80's my family would stop to marvel at the deer whenever we got a rare sight of a herd passing through our backyard. Now, they're more common than the squirrels.

Japan has had a pretty robust hunting tradition that is almost gone with urbanization. They lament that the animals (mostly deer) need to have their herd culled and there are no young people taking up hunting.

The license fees go to the individual country's government wildlife management office to help them manage their..wildlife. Virtually none of the countries in Africa have money to fund their wildlife resource management nor do they have enough to keep enough rangers, police officials , etc. to stop the poaching that is the actual extinction pressure exerted on Africa's endangered species.
I mentioned on an earlier thread that a couple of years ago, one of the countries in Africa auctioned off a white rhino license as part of the managment of a particular wildlife area...the license brought $150,000.
The state of Michigan does the EXACT same thing, just as other states do. The state has a managed elk herd just north of Gaylord, and the area can only support so many animals. They also want to manage the number of bull elk, vs. cows, etc. A resident can enter a lottery drawing to win a license. If chosen, pay the $$ fee and then go on the very managed hunt. You are told where, when, and who you are going with, and you are expected to take an animal.
As was mentioned, you won't find too many ordinary Zimbabwean's crying over Cecil...
By the way, Cecil was being radio tracked because they wanted to learn more about male lion's range..Cecil was the dominant male lion because two other dominant lions had fought to the death, one dying in the fight and one dying later. Male lions also routinely kill cubs, the females need to hide their cubs from rival males.
Such sweet cute animals, thank you Disney for the skewed views of what wildlife is really like.

If you forbid hunting, those animals have no economic value to locals and they are decimated by poachers.

Yeah, and I have a real problem with that. I find trophy hunting distasteful, but I can at least accept a clean kill. The likelihood of a clean kill of a mature male lion with an arrow is about zero, *in my estimation*.
This guy wanted to not merely collect a trophy, he wanted to be able to brag that he stalked and killed it with a bow and arrow. The guy deserves derision, if not disgust. Maybe the guides set him up, but the guy himself has an ego problem, and I grieve for the suffering of the animal.
I wish I could say that I've never had to deal with a mortally wounded, suffering animal, but I have. Any decent man would make an effort to avoid that circumstance, rather than increase the likelihood.
In days of yore, they carried Nitro Express rifles for a reason.

Look dickweed, I know may people some in my own family that ONLY have wild game for meat. Them may take depending on the hunting reg of where they live take up to 7 deer in a year for the freeze and that's what they eat for the year.

Male lions also routinely kill cubs, the females need to hide their cubs from rival males.
I'm a big fan of Big Cat Diary, in which three presenters follow individual families of lion, jaguar, and cheetah. (One of them is Saba Douglas-Hamilton, hubba hubba).
They get personally attached to the critters but they don't intervene. If a male lion can take over a pride he kills all the cubs so that the females come into heat and he can produce his own offspring.

Yes. Saw a documentary a while back about a female lion and her three cubs. She would hide the cubs during the day to keep the male lions from finding them. Had a huge rainstorm come up, cubs left their hiding place, one almost drowned, etc.
Most disturbing part of this documentary was the younger male lion found one of the cubs and proceeded to bat it around until he killed it. Picture your cat at home with a paper wad, only the paper wad was a living kitten.
Folks making the documentary talked about how hard it is not to interfere when filming, they wanted to save the cubs....

Butch's comments up above should be read by those noble souls here who have not the slightest idea what the actual situation is in Africa with game animals. There's all kinds of tourism involving preserves and wildlife, most of them not involving hunting, but the hunting part is both financially important AND an integral part of game management.
Which is vital, in places where poaching/self-defense/freelancing by locals are serious issues, and management of the whole situation keeps these conflicts at bay or to a minimum.
And misbehavior by hunters, their guides, or the preserve management happens (there and here), because humans. And in a place like Zimbabwe it's much worse because the destruction of the country and its economy by the insane regime.
But hey, substituting personal tastes and idiotic pop psychology on strangers and weaponizing one's bigotries and ignorance are much more popular than actually becoming informed and thinking - esp. when there is moral narcissism to be had. Hey look, it's working wonders right here in the US for rule of law, race relations, economics, individual liberty, and foreign policy!

I read somewhere he donates the meat from his kills to the local people. There is a pic of him bagging a rhino; the meat from that rhino went to feed the people at a local village. So even if it's not him other people are eating the meat.
And legal animal game hunting has actually saved more animals than killed them; the locals view the animals as financial assets, not food or pests.
Still think letting an animal suffer 40 hours before you kill it is beyond the pale though. As is baiting an animal out of its preserve. But I think that is on the hunter and landowner he hired and possibly not on him.

That seems to be the case with all this big game "trophy" hunting in Africa. You pay a shit load of money that helps the local economy and also wildlife preserves, and the meat is donated to locals. The number of people that can't figure this out here is just pathetic.
Now in this case there seems to be quite a few laws being broken and those that did it need to be prosecuted. But whether this guy had any knowledge his guides were breaking the laws or if it was all on the guides I figure that they will skate and he will receive all the punishment. Far too many people though are using this instance to demonize all hunters that go there and do follow the laws concerning hunting.

Most disturbing part of this documentary was the younger male lion found one of the cubs and proceeded to bat it around until he killed it. Picture your cat at home with a paper wad, only the paper wad was a living kitten.
Folks making the documentary talked about how hard it is not to interfere when filming, they wanted to save the cubs....
