Corporate America is not in buisness for us. They are in buisness to make money for their investors. If investors are not satisfied they can always pull their money and invest elsewhere.

15 I used to arise with or often before the sun, enthusiastic for the morning, happy to feed my pets, catch up on the blog, enjoy the coolest part of the day, get some work done.

Now, I find I lie in bed with no will to get up until the sun is high, pets seem rude and demanding, even the prospect of Vic's news and morning moron chatter don't inspire me to arise. I seem bereft of physical energy and spiritual motivation.

So, do you think I should go back to making coffee first thing in the day?

What I mean is that the smart play for PP is to either go on the offensive or play the victim.

So theyll lie about receiving death/bomb threats, and then perhaps release abortion records of a Republican's daughter.

We're at the point now where PP breaks out the health care song and dance.

It's a lie. we know it's a lie, but the LIVs eat it up.

Now if only there were a prolife group that ran hospitals, maybe even when taken as a whole the largest provider in the country.

Man if such a thing existed, and they made a promise to do the actual healthcare stuff, it'd cut PP off at the knees.

a shame they don't exist or surely we'd hear from them.

43 The quarterly capitalism article was interesting because this is a critique I've had of all kinds of companies for years. Bonus structures and the like are tied to quarterly earnings reports which causes massive disincentives to invest in R (ampersand) D because of the uncertainty about what will and won't turn out to successful. At some point, failing to invest in future products will destroy the company. A corporation has an absolute duty to act in the best interest of its shareholders which includes having both a short term and a long term approach. Focusing only on short term is as bad as focusing only on long term. There has to be a balance and it seems, at the moment, that the balance has shifted too much to the short term.

But needless to say, I don't think that's any of the government's business in the slightest, thank you very much. If it's a problem, and I do think it's a problem, then it's one of human psychology and incentive structures and the only thing government intervention will do is make it so so so much worse.

So is it a problem? Sure. Is it a problem for government to fix? Please to be sharing whatever is being smoked with the class.

49 What did you think would happen?

Well, deinstitutionalize the mentally ill is a good thing for liberal progressives who care about the unfortunate more than republicans, and of course the unfortunate bad things that happen, even though reintegrating the mentally ill into mainstream society is mostly a good thing for everyone and credit for that goes to the deeply compassionate and caring liberal progressive.

It's the mean hearted republicans who emptied the institutions of the mentally ill because the republicans wanted to save money and push the problem off onto someone else, so the republicans get the blame for the bad things that happen when mentally ill people live on the street like they do when there is a republican president.

So deinstitutionalizing the mentally ill started under democrat governor of California Pat Brown, but it was Reagan who agreed with the army of mental health professionals who argued that mainstreaming the mentally ill would be a good thing since new drugs and new treatments meant that the people could go home and live with their families.

So blame the republicans, who only did it to save money, for agreeing with the liberal left, and for giving the progressives what they wanted, and when it went bad, it was the republicans who only wanted to put the mentally ill in prison after they commit crimes for which they are not responsible because they are mentally ill, you see?

I'm not even sure it's a "problem" on a blanket scale. If the government were really to stay out of it, then all it would take is one or two businesses failing because they didn't pay enough attention to R&D, and the others would wise up.

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - Not dead yet at July 30, 2015 09:19 AM (kff5f)

55 Posted by: alexthechick - Team Joker Money Pile Being Hit By SMOD at July 30, 2015 09:14 AM (mf5HN)

I disagree that it is a problem.

It is part of the business cycle. If a corporation pushes quarterly returns over long-term investment then it will be punished by the market eventually. And companies that act only for long-term success will be punished by the equity markets specifically.

The market always tugs capital around to where it makes sense.

90 I'm glad people are further realizing the stupidity of DeBlasio as his army of inequality (i.e. the homeless) returns to the streets, assaulting the denizens of normal sanity.

The area around Grand Central has become a dangerous filth-hole. Up and down Park Ave from 34th to 50th there are various spots where the homeless (and mentally ill) congregate or stake out territory.

It is truly a walk back in time that reminds me of Port Authority in the 80's and the West Side Highway of the same era.

NYC is not only losing business in the form of corporations, but now they are losing residents and the last golden goose, tourism.

This is the liberal utopia. And there will be no productive people left to pay for it. We can start calling it Venezuela on the Hudson.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that all bonus systems are flawed and create their own issues and weird disincentives.

The only ones that seem to work are in sales where the bonus can be directly tied to performance.

And possibly, in a kind of investment portfolio management situation based on the overall increase in value of the client's portfolio.

YMMV

116 I disagree that it is a problem.

It is part of the business cycle. If a corporation pushes quarterly returns over long-term investment then it will be punished by the market eventually. And companies that act only for long-term success will be punished by the equity markets specifically.

The market always tugs capital around to where it makes sense.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at July 30, 2015 09:19 AM (Zu3d9)

Oh I agree that it's part of a business cycle. When I say it's a problem, I mean it's a problem to the extent that like most things involving human beings, there seems to be a lemming like all that matters is the quarterlies! push over the last few years. Rather than how will this improve the company over the short and long term, it's how will this move the stock right now and fuck the long term. So everyone focuses on that and then, to pick say Apple, Steve Jobs croaks and the company starts flailing around because the fuck do we do now. Sure Apple has all the money now. But I sure as hell remember when it didn't and I remember when IBM strode the Earth like a colossus and Kodak anybody?

I don't mean it's a systemic problem for the very reasons you stated. Do one or the other and your company will go away. It is a problem for those companies individually.

It is a very interesting question re: duty to maximize shareholder value as to how much to dump in R (amp) D. Take pharmaceuticals. I don't recall the numbers offhand but the failure rate on new drugs is astronomical. What is the balance point between we are dumping a few billion into a line of research that may flame out horribly and we have to dump a few billion into a line of research that may pay off spectacularly? Because there is one. Same thing with any other company. Innovate or die. It's just that sunk costs to innovate don't look nice on each individual's metrics to get his/her bonus.

So, yes, I will stand by my statement that it's a problem. I'm not sure that there is a solution though because humans are gonna human.

Yup. The trailer explicitly shows that they had orders to stand down and let the besieged Americans die, orders which they ignored. The question is, will the film portray the orders as coming from low level bureaucrats or high up in the State Dept.

By the way, trailer looks good. Much more serious than your typical Michael Bay flick.

180 Over at Breitbart, post on new Daily Show host indicates that it's gonna be all about race. Oh joy.

According to Deadline, Deadline, Noah's stand-up performance eschewed political commentary in favor of Seinfeld-esque comedy about social issues, with a special focus on law enforcement's treatment of the black community.

"Every time I turn on the news, another black person has been killed for seemingly fewer and fewer reasonable reasons," Noah said, according to the outlet.

Of his own status as a black man living in the United States for the first time, the comedian added: "I just don't want to die and I don't know how not to die."

201 Wall Street Journal has an interesting story on Hillary's graft. When she was SOS, the Swiss bank USB was in trouble in the U.S. because it had been helping tens of thousands of rich Americans set up bank accounts to avoid U.S. taxes. The IRS demanded that USB give them the names of 52,000 tax scofflaws/USB customers. USB didn't want to, so they turned to Hillary. Hillary intervened and ended up getting USB a deal where they only had to squeal on around 4,000 customers. USB then "donated" millions to Hillary and Bill's fave charity: themselves. Meanwhile, even Democrats in congress were saying the deal sucked, and let USB and too many tax cheats off the hook. But it rang the register big time for the Clintons personally, so it was all good.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FOR HOUSING MOVES FORWARD: Michael Patrick Leahy at Breitbart reports on Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule, the Obama Administration's latest affirmative action pet project that will withhold federal funds to localities that fail to have an as-yet-undefined acceptable percentage of minority residents:

The AFFH rule "gives the federal government a lever to re-engineer nearly every American neighborhood -- imposing a preferred racial and ethnic composition, densifying housing, transportation, and business development in suburb and city alike, and weakening or casting aside the authority of local governments over core responsibilities, from zoning to transportation to education," as National Review's Stanley Kurtz put it last week.

I have a friend who is a pro-life OB. She said that when she is talking to her patients during their first visit and taking their history and she asks them about past pregnancies - when they hesitate and then burst into tears, sometimes it's because of miscarriages, but just as often they say "I had an abortion and it's the most evil thing I've ever done." She's referred many post-abortion patients to therapists and groups like Rachel's Vineyard (a pro-life support group for women who regret their abortions).

People don't talk about such things at parties so there is no way of knowing how many women are tossing and turning this week, thinking of their babies being carved up for parts.

I'd bet the number is not small.

232 43 The quarterly capitalism article was interesting because this is a critique I've had of all kinds of companies for years.

233 Re: Japanese laser

This is why you cannot trust science reporters. That energy did not come from focusing of the laser unless we are prepared to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr. Einstein to use them as dynamos. So that energy came from one of three places: a) it was pumped in at a continuous rate until enough was collected to discharge [think capacitor]; b) exothermic chemical reactions [think battery]; or c) conversion of matter to energy [think nuclear reactor].

That's not to say this process is not useful if true, but we should all be very skeptical until it is clearly explained where the energy comes from and has been replicated several times by different researchers.

Posted by: Ken in NH at July 30, 2015 03:17 PM (qFlZT)

234 OK, PopSci had a slightly better write up: http://www.popsci.com/researchers-japan-fired-worlds-most-powerful-laser

So capacitor it is. They took approximately 100-watts over 2 seconds and released it in a trillionth of a second. But it still had no more energy than holding that 100-watt light bulb for 2 seconds. In fact, it would have less energy as there will be losses in the system. I think it would be fairly safe to stand in front of this laser. You probably wouldn't even feel it hit you or it would feel like a pin prick.
