AoSHQ Interview With Dan Holler Of Heritage Action On All Things Conservative And GOP

First, sorry about my audio on yesterday's interview with Noah Pollak (If you missed it, it's all about the Iran deal. Listen here.). Not sure what happened. Today's sounds fine so no excuse for you there.

Dan Holler (@danholler) is the Director of Communications at Heritage Action where he does a great job of keeping track of the ins and outs of policy and politics from a conservative perspective.

You can listen to the interview (which is under 25 minutes) here.

We spoke late yesterday afternoon about a number of things including:

This weekend's clown show in the Senate where Mitch McConnell told conservatives where they could stuff it.

Why the battle to end the relatively small and obscure Export-Import Bank is so important for anyone who wants to shrink the size and scope of government. Fun fact: The law requires the bank to be closing up shop but in typical Obama fashion the head of the bank has said, nah.

We also discussed the first 7 months of the GOP Congress and the many ways and reasons it's been such a dumpster fire.

Dan tries to convince me that the GOP is salvagable without burning it down. I felt a little twinge of something in my cold, black hear. It might have been....optimism. But then it unlike any legislation conservatives support, it passed. You might have better luck.

To give you some fodder for discussion while you're listening (and hey, tell your friends!) Tim Carney writes today about something Dan touches on in the interview...Mitch McConnell's flawed vision.

Next fall, when Hillary Clinton and her proxies in the media point to government shutdowns to argue that Republicans aren't mature enough be left in charge, McConnell wants to point to two legislative years full of accomplishments. Already, he boasts of passing a budget (something Harry Reid basically never did), an update of No Child Left Behind, Trade Promotion Authority and a permanent "doc fix."

...

From a simply political perspective, there are reasons to question McConnell's strategy. The electorate complains about dysfunctional Congress, but are they really going to reward a Congress that passes small-fry bills that most regular people will never hear about?

Then there's the policy strategy: Can you possibly set the stage for an agenda of shrinking government by passing a bunch of bills that mostly increase government — restarting an expired subsidy agency, increasing Medicare spending and increasing federal spending and revenue through a highway bill?

My argument is, no. If you don't make the case when you have the power (even if Obama vetoes everything), you can't sell people on the idea that if you give them more power you will use to do the exact opposite of what you spent 2 years doing. The lesson the GOP will learn is cutting deals with Harry Reid and Patty Murray comes with no cost from the right and in fact they will be rewarded for it.

Does anyone, other than McConnell and Boehner, think that if you keep handing the Democrats all these "compromise" bills (aka, government expanding laws) they will suddenly become more pliable if Jeb! is in the White House? Of course not. They will double down on their demands and obstruction. Then the argument will be, "well, we have to cut a deal with the big government types because the mid-terms. We have to show we can govern after all."

Either you make the case for what you want to do with to the public and let the chips fall where they may or you just simply accept that the job of both parties is to manage the growth of the government in a way that isn't to shocking to low information voters. If it's the latter, the GOP serves no real purpose other than as the right wing of the Democrat party.

Did I mention that the tinge of optimism from Dan didn't last long?

Listen for yourself. Maybe it'll work better for you.

Thanks to our own Andy for the technical support in getting these interviews up online.

40 Okay, being a grouchy, cynical old bastige, I'm gonna say that "where he does a great job of keeping track of the ins and outs of policy and politics from a conservative perspective" makes me want to say "next topic, please."

We are up to the tops of our hip-waders in "conservative" commentarians who yap endlessly about the Great Game of Politics. Everyone opines, anal-yzes, dissects and fills in the crosstabs of all the maneuvering, bullshitting, thievery and treason that has become D.C.'s Most Important Product.

And yet, in spite of a horde of "watchdogs" -- some of whom are pulling a pretty penny from their mad keyboard skillz -- nothing changes. The shitweasels remain in control, unmolested and even unchallenged, and keep on doin' what they do best.

Nothing against this particular guy, of course. He may be the brightest bulb in the chandelier, I dunno.

But the first one who calls for some kind of action rather than reminding us these yahoos are as scummy as we already think they are, gets my attention.

42 What I love about Ex-IM is the presumption private banking sources cannot be found, and the government "must do the job!".

If the credits are worthwhile they will also be profitable, and private banks will finance them. If the "bank" just provides a disguised form of government subsidy then private banks obviously won't step in.

In other words, the non-interest of private banks that Ex-Im supporters claim tells you exactly what is happening here: government subsidies. Crony capitalism for the donor class. End of story.

No, my friend, they aren't. I used to think that way about MY Republican congressman, but now I know better.

People can be corrupted by money, power and the promise of more money and power, or just keeping their jobs (and getting re-elected). As in-duh-vidual citizens, we cannot compete with that kind of persuasion. We get choices at election, and sometimes, with the best of intentions, we choose wrong. And sometimes we have really bad choices.
And then people get corrupted by the money train, and the huge amount of money that passes through the leviathan Federal Government.

The game is rigged and we can't win. But if you don't play, you can't win either.

No chance.

95% (or more) of the people we elect to go to washington are completely non ideological when it comes to politics and just "position" themselves to

a) win the election
b) get the most power, money, influence, etc. possible
c) set themselves and their families / friends / cronies up to become very wealthy during and after the congresscritters time in office.

You remember, the ones projecting 3-3.5% growth in the GDP after the negative 1st quarter, those ones? Yeah, will forget them. Fox is saying the Fed is going to come out with the first number this morning and it will be ~2.0%. And we all know that will be revised downward in the first and second revisions.

I am betting on 1.2 or 1.3% final GDP growth for the 2nd Quarter once all of the revisions are done.

They are still projecting an annual 2.5% GDP growth though.

133 I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I did just a moment ago. She couldn't understand why Ace has been gone for so long. "Why"" she asked, pitifully.

I sat down with her on the sofa and [as calmly as I could] tried to explain to her why the Boss has abandoned the blog, and yes, "even you", I was forced to say.

I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of hopelessness were just too much. I think my daughter could tell something was wrong. I found myself at a loss for words - nothing made any sense, nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "Honey, I just don't know - I don't know what's going on with this blog anymore."

When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes filled with tears. "Daddy," she said, "why is the Ewok doing this to AOSHQ?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. She just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.

For once, she had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think it's too much, but hearing the strength in my young daughter's voice helped me get through.

Our allies do not trust us, our enemies do not trust us, and whatever actions we do take are somehow totally equivocal and usually to our own detriment, which even the big-Ls would not countenance.

Not a fan of foreign engagements, but couldn't we at least show a little leadership and spine?

139 Here's the thing:

McConnell and Boehner promised to fight Obama and his agenda, promised to end of Obamacare or at least mortally wound it, promise to end amnesty.

So, that's what they need to do.

Whining about "having to show you can govern" only shows one thing:

They believe governing consists only of shoveling goodies towards the cronies and connected of the President.

What then is going to change with a Prez like Jeb! or Rubio?

Nothing and more nothing.

Or they could have gone the honorable route, coordinated with all members of the Party with the message that-

the public voted us into the majority to stop Obama, to stop and repeal his job-killing agenda, and to get the economy going

and that's what we're going to do.

Then do it to the best of your ability, staying on message all the time.

But-

140 People can be corrupted by money, power and the promise of more money and power, or just keeping their jobs (and getting re-elected).

What is stunning - and deeply depressing - is how quickly the current crop of Republicans have been corrupted - even Joni Earnest barely had time to take the bread bags off her feet and settle in when she started compromising.

I used to see how it happened - these pols move to DC, they get homes in Alexandria and Chevy Chase and G-town, they send their kids to the local (private) schools, they want to get invited to the right parties and see their names mentioned favorably in the WaPo - the folks back home become this irritant - the hicks you have to toss some crumbs to so you can continue to live the high life in DC.

But I always thought it took years. Now it takes months.

I suspect there is an unwritten law of warfare to the effect that audacity is vital at the start of a war but suicidal when everybody is up and running. Hitler's audacious Blitzkrieg did very well in '39 and '40 and even into '41 but when he tried a similar strike in the Bulge in '44 and '45, the result was sub-optimal. Halsey's audacity was need at Guadalcanal in '42 and '43 but was counter productive in '44 (at Leyte Gulf) and '45 during which he twice launched his fleet unnecessarily into storms and sustained sever losses. Lee's audacious victories on the Peninsula and at Chancellorsville served hi well but failed him at Gettysburg after which he abandon audacity for determination. Audacity is fine while everybody is still learning their jobs but once everyone is awake, it's better to play it safe.

More than that, audacity is fine when you have the materiel to back it up. Uncle Adi's first blitzkrieg forays were backed by a shit-ton of supplies, ammo and gasoline. At the Bulge, not so much.

I suspect Lee was in a similar situation at the end of the Great Unpleasantness.

Any effort to write military checks you can't cash is likely foredoomed. But as long as he has the backup, the audacious guy wins.

The LSM will make sure they never get credit and are branded obstructionists no matter what.

244 They named him after Cecil Rhodes, an alleged homosexual from the 19th century. Basically, this guy invented "blood diamonds."

Posted by: Fritz at July 29, 2015 10:52 AM (UzPAd)

Killed the Boers to get at the diamonds. The Boers were a little hard on the Brit's military in the process too. More women and children died in the concentration camps than fighters.

245 He lured him off

A dentist from Minnesota did this all himself. Got the truck. Baited it. Found Cecil. Made the unprotected area smell like dead beast. No help doing this from locals at all. Really?

Pretty sure he had the help of a lot of locals. Turns out the 91 year old former ruler of Zimbabwe celebrated his birthday eating a semi endangered elephant.

248 Halsey at the end of '42 did not have the material to back up his audacity. When USS Washington under the command of Admiral 'Ching' Lee with USS South Dakota were dispatched by Halsey to meet IJN Kirishima only four destroyers could be spared. And Halsey was flying his flag from one of only two US fleet carriers left in the Pacific.

251 I will say this: I do find it weird.

Paying $50k, flying to Zimbabwe and shooting a huge lion.

Just so you can have a lion head in your house.

What he did is something he thought was legal, and he did pay big money for the privilege. He had permits, and the requisite guides, etc. If they did something wrong, it's probably not on him to know it.

As to his motivation for being a "trophy" hunter, I don't get it. There are pictures of him with leopards, a rhino, polar bear, etc. All shot with bow. He's no coward.
Maybe he's busy being Earnest Hemingway.

Eat what you kill, my general rule for hunting.

The Garryowen on Chambersburg? That's a great little place. I've sunk many a pint of Guinness there. I'm glad you enjoyed the horseback tour; it's really the best way to go, for my money. Perhaps next year, if things are better personally and employment-wise for me, I'll be able to join you.

Two lovely pairs of DDs. Oh, what a lucky man he was.

Meh. I have nothing against trophy hunting. If Cecil was somebody's pet they should have done a better job of keeping him on the reservation.

He had to know it was illegal to lure the lion off of a protected area.

Honest question. During these hunts you posted was he protected by a modern high powered rifle able to knock down the "trophy" if he was endangered. If your answer to this is yes then you should retract the "He's no coward" Doesn't take balls to hunt these animals if you face no danger. At that point why not just go to the zoo.
